THIEVES. Owner does under hood inspection (with me watching),Then does emissions test(passes). Then tells me my after market air filter is not CARB compliant. Which he could of told me ,before doing test. Charged me full price and said sorry . What bothered me the most, is I have a daughter. This guy is a crook. He ran a smog test on my son's car even though he knew the check engine light was on and would not pass. The bureau of auto repair states you need to inform the customer that it will not pass before hand, but he didn't. I went down there to complain and hopefully get his money back, but he refused and just pointed to a sign that said this fact. Not sure what the great reviews are all about but this place needs to be avoided. Took my '88 Toyota pick-up in today and had an awful experience. The tech who had an attitude to begin with forced my locked gas cap open without using the key and tells me "I hate to tell you those things never work". Then proceeds with the test and I am informed by the counter girl that the vehicle failed because the idle was too high and the timing was off which I questioned because the vehicle never failed a smog test before. It had in fact passed all the emission tests. When I proceeded to my mechanic's shop he informed me this shop has a reputation for failing vehicles especially trucks when they should be passed. His idle test showed I was in the range and the timing was off by less than 5 degrees neither of which should have warranted a fail. My truck was passed at another smog station less than an hour after it failed at Cheap Smog, and for $15 less to boot. There's something crooked about the way they do business and I was told they try to fail a certain number of vehicles. From reading some of these other posts I am not alone in my experience. They aren't cheap either as $53 for the smog and certificate can be beaten by many other shops in Santa Rosa with honest techs and better attitudes. read more

My problem with "Cheap Smog" is that after leaving my vehicle to get it tested they failed my car because the idle RPM's were too high. I certainly didn't know beforehand, but all it took for them to determine that the RPM's were too high was to look at the dash board!!!!!! I should have just been told the idle was too high as a mere courtesy, rather than been charged $40.00 for absolutely nothing! On top of that "Cheap Smog" wanted to charge me another $40.00 to bring my vehicle back after the idle RPM was lowered, to get a smog certificate... It seemed so majorly unfair, that Cheap Smog charged me money in the first place. I should have been given better customer service out of sheer decency and as a common courtesy when the technitian looked at the gauge on my dashboard, I should have simply been informed that the idle RPM was too high, and therefore the vehicle wouldn't pass the test. I feel that Cheap Smog charging me money for this was a scheme... I'm asking the people at Cheap Smog: to respond to my complaint and to offer me a refund... Is anybody listening? read more

This place is amazing. I have a 1990 Honda, and most smog check places charge $75 or more for a smog check. This place charges $45 dollars (plus the $8.75 for certificate sent to DMV) no matter WHAT your vehicle is. I was in and out in about fifteen minutes- I did go at about 8 am, and there was no one in front of me, but I usually wait over an hour when I take my vehicle to get smogged so this was a treat! Went in for a smog check today everything seemed fine the mechanic was friendly and thanked me for my business. Not a word that the test failed. Went to the DMV waited in line for an hour and bingo was informed that it had not passed. I was so pissed I drove back to the smog shop and asked the mechanic why he failed to tell me it failed and he tells me that's why it was $6.00 cheaper than normal. Really? I found out after that I had a code light on which I should have been informed about before he proceeded with the test knowing it would not pass. It is amassing to me how a business will do anything for a buck! Bottom line stay away from this shop totally dishonest!! read more

I just used their services for the third time and appreciated the prompt, efficient and friendly service. It was also helpful to have saved a few dollars by taking my car here rather than to my regular mechanic. The waiting room is a bit funky but is well equipped with books, magazines and a spot for kids to play should you have a string of cars in front of you. If I were to choose key words to describe this place I would call it convenient, friendly and efficient. read more

I laugh at the people that are pissed because the Smog shop fail them because the Check engine light was on. Fix your car!! Then get it smogged. I just had my truck smog there today and the experience was great. A young lady greeted use and told use the cost up front. No wait time and we made small talk about a newspaper article. When the Boss man was working on the truck we all had conversation and the time went by fast. Anyone making bad review of this shop needs to look in the mirror. You bring a busted car in,it won't pass. Don't blame the shop. I'm done looking for coupons and going to a different shop everytime. $53.00 with no coupons is fair market value. DON't GO HERE!!! This guy is a rip off. If you check other reviews through google & yahoo (i wish I did first) you will hear the same thing. He failed my car for too high RPM's. I took it to my mechanic and it was right on the spec. Took it back with my mechanic and he still charged me an extra $38 to re-smog. I asked him why didn't he show me the timing gun readout at the time of fail. He had nothing to say. HE IS A CROOK!!! I wish I could give negative stars. read more

Been going for years with all my cars and that of my grown kids. My oldest son took his car, told the person several times his hood latch was broken. While he waits he heard a loud sound and ran out. Was told car failed. As he started up the car it heated up and opened the hood to find distributor cap broken! He told owner and was told he brought it there like that. He had to have car towed home! This person whom I have used for years and told friends, broke this and I will never go there and am going to tell everyone I know about this! Number for a cold air intake. Said I would have to order a sticker. Surprise surprise. I went down the street to Hensley automotive, and it was done without a problem. I've been to many of the other smog stations in the area and this one is hands down the best! Very friendly and reasonable staff. I was in and out in 10 minutes. I have been taking my car and my pick-up to Cheap Smog for as long as I've had to get them smog tested (and that's every year now for my ancient truck.) The owners take pride in their work and are intelligent and thoughtful about what they do. It tickles me that they play chess during lulls (you'll see the chess set on the counter.) I've been taking my 1993 Plymouth Voyager mini van to Cheap Smog Test on Petaluma Hill Road in Santa Rosa, CA since 2006, and I wouldn't go any where else. Since my van is an older model, with more than 120K miles on the engine, I'm required to get a smog test every other year at a Test Only station. Cheap Smog Test stands by their name in value, but there's nothing cheap about the service, attention to detail and consideration they provide to their customers. As of Oct. 20011, the test is only $45. + $8.25 for the certificate, for a total of $53.25 out the door. The price has not increased since I first came to them for a smog test in 2006. This is the best price I've ever found in Sonoma County. That earns them the 1st Star. The mechanics are highly qualified and professional, while being sincere, and patient enough to answer any questions without making one feel ignorant. That's Star #2. The staff is very friendly, and the facility offers a comfortable place to stay dry and warm (or cool) while waiting for your vehicle to be tested. That earns them Star #3. No appointment is necessary, and the test is always fast, with very little waiting time and usually no lines. I'm typically in and out within 20 minutes... This earns them Star #4. Finally, they are open 6 days a week, Mon-Sat. from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, making it very convenient to find a time for anyone to get a smog test done. The test station is conveniently located on Petaluma Hill Road, just off of Santa Rosa Avenue, with easy drive in and drive out access... and they accept all payment types. This earns them the 5th Star. That's 5 out of 5 STARS! I simply can't imagine what more one could ask for from a smog test station. I would HIGHLY recommend Cheap Smog Test, and the friendly, professional and knowledgeable staff who work there, to anyone needing a smog test, especially from a Test Only station. read more

I'm a real customer of this business (not a competitor or from the business itself) and I've used them about 8-10 times over the past ~6 years. They are quick, the price is reasonable, and they have been very friendly every time I have been there. I've had no problems with them on any of our visits over the years, and our cars have always passed OK. I've been very happy with them and I feel I can fully recommend them to others. Well my experience is very similar to that of Anita's!! My mechanic found no issues and took it to "Another Smog Test" on Santa Rosa Ave.!! It passed. I called and the receptionist stated that the tech will call me back the next day....I was surprised to not get a call back!! Two more messages for a call back were left...no responce. I will be seeking other avenues to recoup the fees paid for either negligent, incompetent or fraudulent services rendered. read more
