Great little dinner with that old town feel to it. Walked in and was immediately greeted and was asked if I was dining in or taking it to go, I responded dining in and was told to sit wherever I wanted. The waitress immediately came over with a menu and silverware and took my drink order. Once she returned with my drink she took my order. Within 10 minutes or less my order was being delivered to my table hot with condiments such as butter, jellies, and syrup. Everything was good, no complaints here. There's 3 TVs with different shows on for variety, o particularly was watching the one playing the old TMNT cartoon from the 90s. Grabbing lunch with a friend overall the atmosphere of the place was like a homey type place. The service was fast and the food was pretty good. We stopped in for breakfast because it is my boyfriend's diner. I have never been. So many options on the menu! You can get breakfast lunch or dinner. You definitely get your money worth, servings are huge. Everything tasted great, like home cooked and made with it love. Our server was very attentive and super nice. She knew the menu well. The decor was mostly navy and water related. We loved reading the patches on the wall. The only reason I give a 4/5 and not a 5/5 is because the bathrooms are not secure. The lock doesn't work. It also would be helpful if they had benches outside or inside for people that are waiting. The place was super busy but that's a good thing. Look forward to trying more items on the menu read more

So happy to have found this gem. It is a small diner. We were hoping to find a place with good food, and I am happy to have found this one. I did not like feeling crammed at the table. From the way I had to sit, I did get some type of staining on my shirt from the table. Overall, the service was a great group of girls! Now for the food. This is a nice dinner with really great food. The service is really good and the couple that own it are very nice and personable. I really like the old school diner vibes which lends well to the atmosphere as well as the food. I order the 10oz ribeye and eggs which was cooked perfectly and was very well priced. I was at the restaurant around 11:30 AM, and it was quite busy. Many locals, who are loyal customers, came in to enjoy breakfast and lunch. I had an amazing meal today at the Hometown, which is now under new ownership. I ordered the catfish with eggs and grits, and I absolutely loved the cornmeal catfish--it came out piping hot and was fried to perfection. The eggs were soft scrambled and mixed with cheese, and the grits were served with a side of cheese and butter. The waitress was busy and forgot to bring the cheese and butter for my grits. I really didn't need it. A couple of ladies sitting nearby asked me about my order and what kind of fish I ordered. They wanted to know if it was good, and I responded that it was absolutely delicious. I will definitely be coming back to eat at Hometown Diner! read more

Been to Hometown Diner Portsmouth a million times and NEVER had such bad service, food is subpar, and change in ownership definitely hurt... We come to see Darlene our waitress... but i think we will be going to Village Inn or Nix... How do you release your kitchen staff before waitress before noon on a Saturday? Bad management idea... prior owners never had that issue. Poor waitress, the owner shouldn't went to back and started cooking for releasing staff... From a family restaurant ownership... Unless you can do their job don't release them. You can wait tables, that's where you cut first. read more

We had a late breakfast here today. The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. I notice several of the servers wiping the tables after guest had left, they not only cleaned the table they also cleaned all of the dispensers on the table. Very good job. The food and serve were both great. The portions were very generous. The food was served quickly and arrived at the table hot and delicious. Overall, a very good experience. I ate here for the first time. It was amazing. The Ambiance and decor were great. When the Hostess saw my ailing father coming she had the door opened for him. They had great comfortable chairs with wheels, no trying to skoot a chair on carpet. Our waitress was very nice, professional and did a wonderful attentive job without hovering. Her timing was spot on. Now I am VERY picky about my food. My eggs were PERFECTLY cooked, best in years. Hash Browns were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Toast was perfect the meat sides were delicous. My father said the pancakes were perfect.The coffee was the best I have ever had from a resturant. They serve Breakfast, lunch and dinner all day. Food was decent. Our server never checked on us to see how the food was or if we needed anything else. She never brought our check either. A throwback to the good old days when a community restaurant meant something and locals met up with each other in a spirit of friendship over a home cooked meal. Sadly these types of establishments are rare these days, so I hope the Hometown Diner stays afloat forever. The people make this restaurant what it is. Friendly, hospitable and down to earth. I'd return tomorrow again if not for the distance just to be among nice folks. Course the food is good, though I didn't sample the entire menu! Had open face turkey with mashed and green beans.
