Use to frequent this place at least twice a month. Good food. But after a roach almost crawled on my plate while sitting at the bar, I won't be coming back until I hear they have taken care of the roach problem. Which I was told they are aware of, but haven't done anything. read more

I was informed about how good this place was and decided to go today 12/27 for the first time. I made it in the door at 10:48am...and was told by the lady behind the bar... that they were closed...they close at 11am according to "their" clock...which is set 10 minutes ahead of time. I felt this was very unprofessional...because as a first time customer, how would I know they close according to a clock on their wall set 10 minutes ahead? I feel this was a little unprofessional and unwelcoming, and low key racism as they can choose who to serve and not to serve according to "their" time. read more

The food is great and the service is friendly and and fast, old time building is very cool, recommend to everyone.

Very accommodating-the server was open and helpful when I needed gluten free food. Had a terrific salad with extra toppings :) Service was impeccable, portions are huge and it feels like you're at home, family atmosphere. Had half a Greek Salad and my husband had half a chef salad. $6,50 each! Coffee was good and strong. Place is in a good location for traveling. It has one brick wall so it is a pleasant restaurant. They do have a lot of fried food so that's why I had a salad as I'm gf. read more

One word to describe my meal, DELICIOUS! Passing through Franklin on my way to Suffolk and decided to try this eatery that has been serving customers since 1945. Friendly staff and very quick service. Bathrooms were very well kept and clean. Well worth the 5-10 minute drive off of HWY 58. read more

Nice place. It's an older establishment. A lot of locals visit here on a regular basis, think Cheers for us "older" folks. The breakfast was hot and delicious. The only issue I had was when I went in for a second visit with a group (5 adults, 3 children), we were told to seat ourselves. There were no tables available. They had several tables that could handle our party, but those tables already had between 1 and 3 people already sitting there. When we came back to the front, we were told we'd have to wait 30-45 minutes because no tables were ready. No kidding? read more

I love the food at Fred's but also enjoy the classic-pub style ambiance as well. This restaurant is way off the beaten path with lots of chains closer to the main route so i can't imagine it gets too many visits from other than locals. That was certainly the case when i had breakfast there. I'm a fan of grits and eggs and, while hard to mess up, both came out perfect. If only my schedule had allowed me to come in for a more challenging meal such as lunch. Regardless, the locals were cordial and i struck up several conversations while enjoying my food. I'd certainly bypass the chains, take the extra ten minutes, and come back to Fred's again. I really enjoyed myself in this restaurant. read more

Super sweet staff. We were welcomed inside and it was enough seating for my entire family of 5. Our waitresses (both) were very polite and relatable with my 8 year old and 10 year old request of pancakes. One waitress informed our family that the pancakes were large (and they were) and maybe only one was needed but would definitely get another, if needed. (Great tip , thank you.) My family enjoys pancakes! Coffee was great and they have turkey alternatives for the meat. Awesome place! Will accommodate a big family. Found this place while visiting my brothers new residence in Virginia. Located in a quiet little town. We walked in and I was immediately impressed with the look of the inside. Cozy rustic southern atmosphere. There is a bar located to the right when you walk in and a dining area to the left as well. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Food is always the best and great service BUT CHECK IF IT IS OPEN BEFORE YOU GO! Hours change and it closes early a lot.

You have to get off of the highway and go to the center of town to find them but it is worth it. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is awesome and reasonably priced. They also will suggest little extras which you would do at home but not typically when you eat out. This is the second time I happened to find them and I was thrilled I did. It is also nice to support a place which is not a chain and hires the locals. read more

We stumbled upon Fred's unexpectedly as we were forced to evacuate our vacation rental in Myrtle Beach due to Hurricane Dorian. All I can say is- THANK YOU, DORIAN! :) The restaurant was cozy and staff of extremely attentive and friendly. I had the Bowl-o-breakfast and have been dreaming about it ever since. Wow! Talk about a great find! We were traveling home and thinking we were going to stop somewhere closer to home when we decided that we couldn't wait that long. I googled nearby restaurants and this gem popped up! So glad it did. It's Southern cooking at it's finest. I got a veggie plate which they put together for me that was wonderful. My husband got the Brunswick stew... again, delicious. The staff is amazing, and who couldn't love meeting Mitch, the founder's 100 year old brother. Yes, 100. We will definitely be back! read more

First time at Fred's and it will not be our last. Service was great, food was excellent, prices were reasonable. We both had hamburger steak with mashed potatoes, onions and gravy and a side salad, servings were on the large side and our tea glass was always full, which makes my husband really happy. My wife and I stopped here to have some breakfast and the restaurant was very nice and clean and the server who waited on me and took my order was friendly and professional. We had the cheese jalapeño omelette with bacon and a Texas bacon egg and cheese sandwich and it was great, would definitely recommend this place to anyone that is traveling and wants a great breakfast, definitely has that down home appeal that makes you feel welcome!! read more

Went to Fred's after a recommendation from a coworker. He highly recommended the buffet. First off, bacon was wimpy...almost seemed microwaved. The tater tots were mushy, and the apples had little flavor. Good note: scrambled eggs and sausage gravy were on point! And the fruit salad was fresh and in season. It was odd seeing wrapped little Debbie pinwheels on a buffet. But for $8, I wasn't especially impressed. I'd definitely return, just not get the buffet. The atmosphere of the place along with the bar (and TV showing John Wayne movies) is neat. read more

When I first came to visit Franklin, VA in summer of 2012, my cousin brought us here to Fred's Restaurant in historic downtown Franklin. We were a big group and even at 10a, they were able to accommodate us. Everyone in town knows each other with it being such a small town and I could see the friendliness and southern hospitality really shining through that morning. We each ordered typical items like eggs, sausage, etc. It was not the best food I've ever eaten but it did taste good and the atmosphere was nice. I would return because I like supporting local businesses. read more

The worst place ever! We reserved a table 10 on a Sat morning. Food came out slowly one by one, wrong orders delivered to table, link sausage will spoiled, wrong plate that was delivered was delivered to another member at our table which was not the correct order and the waitress tried to tell me that what I ordered came with sausage. However the menu states country ham. Brought out eggs that were cold . was told by waitress that she would reorder for the ones that didn't get correct food but there were 20 tickets in front of us so it would be 25 to 30 minutes to make the correct orders. So in my opinion food and service were non existent!! I would not recommend to my worse enemy! read more

Food was great it's just that we sat there for 20 minutes before anybody came to take our order and the place smelled like a filthy bathroom. It was so bad , not only did we leave but we completely lost our appetite. This isn't really a family friendly place , lots of drunk people stumbling all over the place. read more
