Watermelon margarita
Sherry J.

We stopped here for a quick bite on our way to somewhere else. The restaurant was a little busy, but there was no one at the bar. Eboni was our bartender, and she was friendly and started us out with a Watermelon Margarita and honey butter croissants. We were not familiar with Cheddar's, but she said they are known for them. We really enjoyed the croissants. We ordered the chips and queso, which did not seem to be scratch at all, and the Key West Shrimp. It would be hard to mess up shrimp and rice, and it was very tasty, as was the pineapple pico de gallo. However, the "off the cob" corn tasted like canned corn. I would say Cheddar's is more "scratch-esque" but the prices are so reasonable we are ok with that once in a while, and it's a solid 3. The drinks are especially delicious.

This was my first visit to the Newark Cheddar's scratch kitchen location, and it definitely lived up to expectations! I had previously dined at the Dover location over 8 years ago, and this one was just as welcoming. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. The drinks were fantastic, and we were off to a great start with their signature complimentary honey butter croissants--soft, buttery, and a perfect way to wake up the taste buds! The food was equally impressive: the ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, the country fried chicken was packed with flavor, and the shrimp and fish platter was generously portioned and cooked to perfection. The portion sizes were spot on--we even had leftovers to enjoy later that evening. It truly felt like the flavor party continued well into the night. I'll definitely be returning!

Food was very satisfying. The manager and waiter took great care of us and the drinks were great. I had 2 just because and ordered food to go.

Staff was friendly and on point from beginning to end. They do take the dress code seriously, I saw people get turned away for athletic wear. It's clear on their website and not asking too much for an upscale night out. Prices weren't ridiculous, especially since portions were plentiful. A lot of people were leaving with leftovers. The specialty drinks are a bit pricey tho. The cornbread and Mac n cheese are a must order the moment you sit down to start things off. Both served in a small skillet, perfect to share. The cornbread bread was flavorful and the butter that comes on top you def want to let that melt right in! The Mac n cheese noodles were a little softer than I would of preferred but the blend of cheeses and the crisp crust on top made me not worry about the doneness of the noodles, it was top notch! We went classic with the entrees - catfish with gulf shrimp. The catfish was cooked perfect super tender and flaky. I wasn't thrilled with the shrimp, for "gulf shrimp" as they listed in the menu they were a lot Smaller than I expected and a little tough. The sauce they came in was nice. I would have liked some kind of sauce on the side for the catfish. The collard green rice was delicious and the broccoli that came with it was prob the most delicious broccoli I've ever had, just cooked well in lots of butter! The other entree we got was the fried chicken. Really delicious and tender. It came with a sweet potato side that was yummy and a classic collard greens Even tho we were stuffed we had to try the bread pudding, it was served with a Side of delicious ice cream. The bread pudding was perfect! I would definitely return even just to eat and try more menu items but the jazz club is a must do! Beautifully decorated and classy establishment all around

I've gone to the bar on multiple occasions to get just cornbread and an entree to go as well as when I have had reservations to dine in, I've seen people come in, just go to the bar and order take out. I'm really disappointed at this experience and it seems like every time I go to South, It's a different experience and a different enforcement of rules.

The food was honestly a 10 out of 10. The collard greens were so good and full of flavor, and I got the smothered turkey wings which were amazing. Definitely ask for extra gravy because that gravy is too good not to. My friend got the shrimp and cheesecake pop and the portion size was actually really solid. I also cannot forget the cheesesteak beignets because wow... such a creative idea and they were amazing. I asked for the sauce on the side and it initially came out wrong, so I had to flag someone down to fix it, but once they corrected it everything was perfect. Now the only downside for me was definitely the service. We really were not checked on much outside of taking our order and bringing drinks. Anytime we needed something like boxes, extra help, or corrections to food, we kinda had to wave down bus boys or random staff members passing by. A few more table check ins would've made the experience so much better because the food itself truly deserves top tier service. Parking can also be a little annoying, but I did notice there's a garage across the street which helps. Overall though, I absolutely loved this place and I'm so happy my friend brought me here. Even with the service issues, I would 100% come back because the food alone is worth it. I love the drawings on the wall and the place has a cute and cozy feel which we love! Also there's a Photo Booth! You have to pay but cute touch

The place itself is pretty clean, the darker decor a guess provides a more grown/upscale like vibe and atmosphere, and seems to be kept pretty clean. The bartender who was our server (boyfriend prefers to sit at the bar) was friendly and attentive in this service to us. Now to the most important part - the eats.... So we really enjoyed all the food we had. The Peri Peri wings were cooked pretty perfectly with a crisp outside but tender and juicy inside. We liked the concept of the Cheese steak Beignets as they did marry those two dishes well. The Mac and Cheese was doing what it's supposed to - cheesy, gooey and tasty. He wasn't the biggest fan of the tacos - think just wasn't his thing - but I liked it and that it was a different take wit the tortilla being a fried tomato. Drinks were good - the first one I ordered was ok, but my second one was exactly what I wanted! We plan to come back again for brunch and to try other dinner menu options.

As my girls arrived to celebrate with me, I loved the oooohs and aaahs from them. The live jazz was the cherry on top. I think the band was called Buddy Boy and there was no cover charge. AMAZING!! We sat in a deep, plush booth in the dining room. Definitely took some major wriggling to get in and out from the center where I sat but they're upholstered beautifully with candle lit marble tables. Service was pretty good, certainly attentive and she was able to corral one of my more picky guest. But the food for all of us, really hit the mark. We had two with the Fried Chicken Dinner which came with greens, Mac and cheese and a small piece of cornbread. One had the ribs that were fall off the bone tender and she raved about the sauce. And I had the grilled oyster appetizer (sorry I missed the pic) and the Frogmore Stew. It was delicious. Flavorful broth, mussels, shrimp, crab, fish, potatoes and corn. Oh and two slices of crispy bread. So good yall. A good time was had. I highly recommend.

When I heard the ingredients compared to the menu ones, I personally agreed. He really could read my vibe from just looking at me. I did like what they had on the menu, but for me, I do like vanilla and honey like type things more. I would choose this over a chocolate one even though I like chocolate too. I would be open to coming back here even on my own. 1000-2000 South used to be much more residential and just off the radar but it seems to have gentrified with 100-1000 South gentrifying too. 100-1000 South has lost that artsy vibe that you still can see in Tattooed Moms and arguably, even Condom Kingdom for just still being there from the beginning lol. If there is going to be anything to replace that more gritty vibe, Rex at the Royal is definitely a wonderful transition to get in to.
