Found across from the capitola mall, this shop specializes in esoteric and uncommon cheeses from around the world. Staff is friendly, offers samples. I got a Swiss cheese that I had not heard of but tasted good so got some. Inside is small, they have a fridge with smaller portions for charcuterie which is nice. I do feel like because this is such a specialized cheese shop with a lot of cheese people have never heard of, it might be good to have them organized by origin and then give a three word flavor profile or something since not everyone knows everything about cheese but definitely likes cheese. Also, there didn't seem to be a lot of common cheeses that would bring in a lot more traffic and let people discover the really good cheeses here. I would definitely come here for more than just the occasional pricey cheese board cheese if they consistently had high quality imported ricotta for baking, pecorino romano DOP, Parmesano Romano DOP, mozzarella, and other Italian cheeses that are difficult to find in the quality necessary to make the dishes authentically. Would help save trips to a place like Eataly for those items.

Cute little shop that allows you to experience cheeses you wouldn't otherwise try. My husband and I stopped by on our way to the beach to pick up some snacks. We ended up getting the broccoli cheddar soup and a $30 mystery bag. The soup wasn't great but the bag was a lot of fun. It came with 7 cheeses, a jam, honey stick, cheese cutter and pin. Service was helpful and we were offered samples as we browsed around the small shop. It's small with no inside seating as we could see. And a few tables outside. A fun experience and I would recommend it to all cheese enthusiasts!

It is with great apprehension that I write this review. My fear is that the location will become popular and the quality will drop. Except, CHEESE!!!! Everything cheese is here! There are cheeses from a variety of mammals and you can sample them before you buy. The service was attentive and kept feeding us samples- truffle cheddar, bleu cheese, something creamy and dreamy, etc. Also, LOOK AT THIS CHEESE SANDWICH!

Cheddar or Never: A Cheesetopia Experience (11/10) I entered this cheese shop as a mortal but left as a lactose-fueled deity of dairy bliss. Upon stepping inside, I was greeted by an aroma so divine it could resurrect a dead baguette. This wasn't just a cheese shop; it was a temple, and I was there to worship. The cheesemonger, who I can only assume holds a PhD in Cheeseology, took one look at me and said, "You seem like a triple-cream brie kind of person." Reader, I cried. She was right. I didn't even know I was a triple-cream brie person until that moment. Her knowledge was encyclopedic; her recommendations were life-altering. Every cheese I sampled felt like a mini vacation. The aged gouda? A sunset in the Netherlands. The blue cheese? A thunderstorm of flavor that awakened parts of my tongue I didn't know existed. And the truffle-infused cheese? I can only describe it as eating the dreams of a millionaire who only vacations in the Alps. They also had a cheddar so sharp it could cut glass and, frankly, my heart. After one bite, I made peace with every mistake I'd ever made in life. The display itself was a work of art: wheels of cheese stacked higher than my hopes and dreams, glistening in the soft glow of well-placed artisanal lighting. There were more free samples than I could count (don't judge me--I stopped at 27). Received one of the greatest cheese boards I've ever had the privilege of being in the presence of. I considered proposing to it, but I feared rejection because I'm only 90% sure cheese can't file for a restraining order. By the time I left, I'd spent enough money to trigger an alert at my bank, but it was worth every cent. Do I regret buying the $120 of cheese aged longer than the moon landing? Not one bit. Do I now have a cheese drawer in my fridge so full it's legally a hazard? Absolutely. This cheese shop didn't just sell me cheese; it sold me a lifestyle, a purpose, a reason to keep going. If you love cheese--or even if you don't--you owe it to yourself to visit. Life is short. Eat the cheese.

What an amazing find in Capitola! I discovered Cheese Shop 831 thanks to Instagram and stopped in for a grilled cheese sandwich. Little did I know that it would be the best grilled cheese sandwich I ever ate! The staff is always super friendly and very knowledgeable about the different cheeses in the shop. Something for all cheese heads. I've also attended some special after hours events at the shop. Those are special and fun. Jillian has a cool shop with a friendly vibe and is a champion for local businesses.

What a gem! I've been looking for a good cheese shop and this was IT. Great rotational menu of grilled cheese sandwiches, a plethora of cheeses to select from, and a complimentary little cheese tasting. I will definitely be back here to try other seasonal cheeses. Can't wait to visit again. PS their homemade CherryLemon jam was delicious and it complemented the grilled cheese sandwiches so well. Please sell this jan!

Dude, such a lovely place! I love the little tiny bites thing they have for the small bits of cheese that they sell for pretty cheap prices. It's great that you can try just a bit of something for a small price. I got my bf the four alarm cheese, which included like ghost pepper and habanero, and he absolutely loved it paired with a yummy cracker. I also got my pup some yummy dog treats that were cheddar and peanut butter flavor, which she absolutely loved at the great price of $6.99 a box. And the service I got from the dude that was working the register was really awesome. He was so nice, and def made me want to come back again! Please check this local cheese shop out! I'll def be back soon for the grilled cheese sandwiches they serve until 2:30 PM!

Where's the cheese? Lots of crackers- a sprinkle of nuts, olives- about 8 slices of salami. Sorry- not worth $100.00.

We picked up a charcuterie platter and were so disappointed. At $100.00 it was a rip-off. A selection of a few cheeses surrounded by grapes, nuts, salami and crackers. Maybe $15 worth of cheese. Maybe $10 (at the very most) of salami. Not a good value at all. Next time we will head over to Whole Foods and get an awesome selection for half the price.

I went to the cheese shop to get cheeses to make a beer fondue. The staff was super helpful and was knowledgeable and let me sample the cheeses before I purchase them. All the samples were delicious. Then I was told that they make grilled cheese sandwiches. Since I work around the corner I decided one day to go and get a grilled cheese for lunch can I tell you wow this was good nice spin on classic grilled cheese. Every time I think it might be possible to cut back on my cheese consumption, I run into a place like this! We went for the grilled cheese but we're totally hooked by the unique cheese selection and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the staff. Not only do they have small pieces of a variety of cheeses cut and wrapped so that you can "sample " on your own, but they were very accommodating about opening up one of the larger pieces to give us a taste. Best grilled cheese sandwiches anywhere! Have been meaning to check out Cheese Shop 831 and finally had a chance today. Sampled four great cheeses. Tidy shop with great selection and all kinds of snacks to go along with the cheese like bacon buttermilk crackers. Super courteous staff. I asked for my sandwich plain. They got my order right (many places don't) and I appreciate that it was marked "No Funny Stuff!" We will be back. Patronize this local shop! read more

I walked in for the first time and they immediately offered me some samples. They were friendly and seemed to be offering them up without any expectation of me purchasing. I ended up trying about seven cheeses which were all delicious. They varied from someone normal like cheeses to extreme funk. There were two or three that were beyond delicious and Shernoff I ended up purchasing three different cheeses. My favorite one was some thing that had witch in the title. Omg delicious. What a treasure to have a shop like this right in Santa Cruz, I used to drive all the way to San Francisco to occasionally do cheese tastings at the ferry building. Now there is one basically right here in town. I highly recommend it. read more

Thank you for a great visit, Jillian! My trip came in right on the verge of closing and you never would have known it from the service provided. Jillian talked to us about our likes and preferences, offered us a sample, and had an abundantly delicious selection. She will cut cheese to order or select it from the case. There was a great selection from Shooting Star Creamery - we tried a little Scorpio, and I picked up some Aries to try at home. I wish it was closer to home or I'd easily be back multiple times a month. Will definitely plan a trip down again - would love to try the Grilled Cheese or tasting box. Fabulous! Ok, I love cheese. I wish I'd opened this great little shop. We read about it recently and I needed a couple gifts for two different neighbors (one had marinated a full on crab with her mother's recipe, the other had me over for tea). My daughter and I headed to this little cheese shop. The walls are a beautiful creamy color to whet your tastebuds with anticipation of the samples of the day. We each received a taste of a cheddar lavender, a delicate Italian goat milk cheese with truffle, ana a more robust and firm cheese from Switzerland. We bought all three, wrapped in cheese paper (separately for my gifts), and couldn't pass up fermented pickles, carrots, and peppers, mustards and honeys. Life seems too short to deny yourself good cheese. read more

I had the opportunity to attend a small party for a close friend. The owners closed the store and attended to the party! What a different type party atmosphere! Small group setting (10 people). Excited to have this new addition to Capitola. I discovered this place while picking up a sandwich next door and since I love cheese I had to pop in. Huge selection of interesting cheeses, snack and specialty items, and some beautiful cheese boards which would make great gifts. The women behind the counter could not have been nicer in recommending a few different cheeses for me to bring home for Christmas dinner. They sell the cheeses in different size chunks, so you don't have to commit to a large amount if you want to try different kinds. It looks like once Covid is over there will be sampling allowed. I am already looking forward to the summer when I can stop by here to grab some cheese for a hike or beach picnic! read more

Discovering this magic cheese shop is a gift from above. The energy, cheeses, tastings, and grilled cheese sandwiches are beyond expectations. Sitting outside on a sunny day, tasting 4 new flavors while waiting for our grill cheese sandwiches, sipping iced tea, and visiting with other shoppers coming in and out (of which there are many), was pure joy. It's personal, modern and delightful at every level. The sandwiches come with a peppery fruit jam, which pairs amazingly with the hot sandwiches; also a blue cheese dip and tiny dill pickles. I get that it's beach time and things move at a different pace, but being a little nicer to customers and visitors would make a big difference. Hopefully next time the service will be as good as the food. EDITED - Saturday, June 20, 2026 I'm updating my review after reading the owner's response. First, I want to clarify that the response appears to be a copy-and-paste message aimed at people leaving negative reviews. If you had actually read my original review, you would have noticed that I never complained about the food, the wait time, prices, staffing, or anything related to the quality of the business itself. In fact, I enjoyed the food and had no issue waiting. I visited on a Thursday, and the café wasn't packed. The owner was clearly working hard, and I respect that. However, when I walked in and said hello, I was completely ignored. There was no greeting, no acknowledgment, and no sense that my business was appreciated. That was the only reason I left a 3-star review in the first place. The response talks about staffing shortages, minimum wage, food costs, and the challenges of running a small business. I understand all of that. Running a business is difficult. But those challenges don't really address the point I was making. A simple "Hi," "Welcome," or even a quick smile costs nothing and goes a long way. I also don't think customers should be made to feel responsible for business challenges such as labor costs or rent. Those are realities of ownership that every business owner has to navigate. That said, after thinking about it, I'm changing my review from 3 stars to 5 stars because the food was genuinely good, and I do support small businesses. My hope is simply that future customers are greeted with a little more warmth and appreciation when they walk through the door. One final thought: when someone leaves a critical review, it may be worth responding directly to their experience rather than posting a generic response. Sometimes there's valuable feedback hidden inside reviews that aren't really about the food at all. I wish you and your business success, and I genuinely hope you continue serving great food for years to come.

As I was sitting in traffic, my stomach started feeling like I ate some broken glass or something. Obviously there wasn't broken glass in the burger, just a fitting analogy. I had stomach pains for the next few hours. This is all I had eaten in like 10 hours, so I'm positive it was the burger. The woman at the counter was friendly and the place was pretty clean. I've got a pretty iron gut and it takes a lot to make it turn. Don't think I will be going back.
