I came here for Tuesday trivia night. The bar is connected to Twist next door and you can probably hear the trivia from there, but the main set up is in Milk & Hops. Tables are first come, first served but you can call in advance to reserve if you're coming with a group and want to guarantee a seat. Most of the seating is high top bar stools, with a few regular tables. They have a nice selection of beers. My sister tried a raspberry cheesecake sour and enjoyed it. To eat, I had the vegan super dank dog. I was very excited about the plant-based option. The kim chi topping was delicious. It was flavorful and not overly pickled. The vegan sausage was a bit rubbery and artificial tasting. My sister got the enchie tots and felt the tater tots were too mushy. Trivia was very efficient. It was organized through the NYC Trivia League, but you can play even if you're not a member. There were six rounds, including a picture identification round and music round. The host was very no-nonsense and kept things moving in between rounds, which was great. It started at 7 and ended at 8:30. The bar tender was nice and attentive. read more

Milk and Hops is a very chill place to meet for some beers with friends. Plenty of tables and fun music. There was one bartender who seemed very busy which is a good thing. I was here for a tasting for a specific beer company. I had ordered a beer and the bartender let me pour my own from the tap. That was nice of him to let me do! This place has a great selection of many different types of beer from many breweries not just in NY. The space as I said was spacious and there was a nice size tv for people to gather and watch sports together. The food here looked good when I saw it come out but I did not try any of the food. The one problem I had with this place, now not sure whose fault or who takes care of the bathrooms as this place is connected to another restaurant but the bathrooms were a mess! One of them had no toilet paper and the other one had toilet paper but there seemed to be dried up excrement on the toilet bowl on the sides of it outside. It was pretty visible. I warned the lady going in there beforehand and she thanked me for that after she came out. There were also no hand towels at the sink area. So this is the only thing I had an issue with. Came on a Friday after work with my boyfriend and a friend who was visiting from out of town. Had a great time. BEER: There is a vast selection! As someone who only drinks sour beer, I was extremely pleased with the options. There was even one on tap (Blue Raspberry)! Although I love that there was a sour on tap, I wasn't actually a big fan of this one (it looks green in the glass, which is mildly off-putting, and just wasn't in love with the flavor). However, there were several sours in cans, including one from my all-time favorite brewery (Hudson Valley). Although a bit expensive ($13 for a 16 oz can), this beer is normally on the expensive side. Most places don't carry it, so I was thrilled they do! SERVICE: The bartender was great. He gave recommendations for a good smoothie style sour and was overall just very friendly and nice. FOOD: We shared a pretzel and I enjoyed it. AMBIANCE: I liked it! Quite chill. As an aspiring pogo stick competitor with an affinity for dairy products, I was a little confused by the name. But there's no confusing how great this place is! Nice beer selection, mostly in the fridges, with about eight rotating on tap any given night. The selection is great, with lots of different styles, and representation from mostly northeast breweries. And the vibe is what really seals the deal. Everyone here is super friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to chat and give recommendations. And it definitely gives off local bar vibes, seems like there are a lot of return visitors. t's the kind of place that you want to succeed based on the people alone. Indoor seating is great, especially when the weather is nice and they can open up the bay doors to the street. It is a little cramped (because so many people come here regularly), but as of May 2021 they're expanding into the adjacent space, so pretty soon there will be even more Milk and Hops to enjoy. read more

If the thought of putting hops into a glass of milk and downing the thing makes you cringe, then you're not alone. I mean, when you walk into this uniquely different beer spot, no one will actually suggest this to you (unless there's some experimental brew that's currently the craze). Nay, what you'll find at Milk & Hops is plenty of satisfying suds and some items that definitely fall into dairy. I found this out firsthand when my girlfriend and one of my buddies visited my sister by her new digs down in Chelsea. Unbeknownst to my sibling, this place was almost right up the block from her apartment. It's a good thing I don't live near it because I'd be the Duke in a week! Why? Beer! Oh the beer. You see, Milk & Hops takes the concept/idea of wine and cheese and alters it by offering alcohol of the ale and lager variety. We walked into this small yet comfortable spot to find ten beers on tap. They were a nice array of styles all from craft breweries, several within the boroughs of NYC (Shout out to Finback and Grimm). My beer of choice hailed from a LIC location, Fifth Hammer (Royalty Racket DIPA) while my buddy also grabbed a NY brew from Peekskill Brewery (You Had to Be There Coffee Stout). If things stopped here, I'd probably still rate the place as awesome, but what makes M&H unique is the ability to grab a can from the multiple fridge doors and have them pop it open and pour it right there for you (the ladies chose this path). Beyond the taps, this can give you almost endless possibilities for drinkage. Plus, if you do happen to live nearby, they sell cans and bottles (and growlers for what's on tap) to go. It's like a beverage distributor that you can casually drink at! So, why 4 stars after such glory? Well, technically we only indulged in half of what Milk & Hops has to offer (no cheese consumption took place). I checked out what was available and definitely had interest, but no one else was really feeling cheesiness (or looking to buy a small piece of something that wasn't entirely cheap). The other tiny piece was the staff. Hey, nobody was really rude or unfriendly, but those that worked there seemed to be doing their own thing. For a place of bodacious beer variety, I guess I expected some slightly more outgoing individuals. But overall, this Milk & Hops is totally a beer haven of the Chelsea area (there's several other locations, FYI). By giving you terrific taps and an option to buy cans and bottles to drink there or later in the privacy of your abode, Milk & Hops has enough originality to rise above most bars. Throw in the opportunity for some interesting dairy as a sidekick and that should knock out any slight problems, making a final star totally possible (perhaps with future visits of the sister). So for now, join me in feeling safe knowing that your glass of milk will stay hop free when you're here (phew). read more

FLOATed over on a high from playing with our new pups to this super cute restaurant and bar and cheese/beer/wine shop (jack of all trades) for Tuesday trivia night after we heard they were famous for the grilled cheese sandwiches. With our expectations aFLOAT, we got the truffle, cheese, and pear grilled cheese sandwich and the cheese board; the pickle, bacon and ham Reuben cubano, and two sparkling waters. While we found the music a little loud to hear everyone on our team, both meals were good and service was friendly. 2.5 hrs FLOATed by as we ate, laughed, rattled our brains, and caught up. We came in 2nd, got a FLOAT-worthy (excuse the pun) prize and will definitely return. read more

I'm not entirely sure how I don't have a review for Milk and Hops. I've been to all of their locations. The two in Astoria (Astoria Beer and Cheese) and unfortunately the east village spot is gone. I've even been in here on my birthday a few years ago I think. I really enjoy craft beer, hard to find craft beers, things that will shock me and blow me away that you can't find in any typical bar. Milk and Hops does something different. The atmosphere is always chill and laid back. It's more like sipping in a beer and cheese shop. They're very good at socially distancing. Hand sanitizer, temperature check, spread out tables. Found myself coming in recently and the bartender was super friendly and had great recommendations. Tried an interesting miso imperial russian beer that was both Japanese and Brazilian. The place wafts of sweet delicious cheese. What's not to love? You can also purchase any beers to go as it is also a shop. They as well have beers on draft if you don't want to pay the $2-3 corking fee. Definitely worth checking out whether you're a beer or cheese lover or both. read more

I was excited to see that Milk & Hops had another location and that I was just two blocks away. I made sure to stop in for a drink. As you probably know, Milk and Hops and Astoria Bier & Cheese are serious about beer. This location is certainly no exception. I like the layout of this location. It is bigger and brighter and can handle bigger groups better than some of the other locations. I love how the beers on tap include lots of local beers. I tried two great Other Half beers on this given Saturday. (They're nice about samples, but only if you ask nicely, and the quantity will be itty bitty.) The fridges are packed full of some stuff you've seen elsewhere, but they definitely try to have some extra special stuff, like Bourbon County and Burial. I got a cool Danish beer and Burial can that were both extra special for later. Didn't eat, but I was definitely jonesing after their brunch items (see my pic). Good clean beer fun. read more

If you are not a cheese and beer then I will have to rethink any future friendship with you! And that's FINAL.....ok I make a few exceptions. Cheese is a huge reason I can not go full vegan! I come to Chelsea for art shows and sometimes all I want is a snack and a crafty beer. And sometimes that beer will be more than my snack. Yes, you heard me right!!! My crafty IPA was ten bones for a small glass but it packed a punch and it was an insane percentage! My cheese plate was super cheap as a three cheese tasting for $7. My beer was the Other Half "All Green Everything" aka my version of green juice! It's healthy right!? Bottom's up! Back to cheese, my cheeses were all very different and delicious and their names were all written on the platter. There was also two nice slices of baguette for each cheese and two little piles of dried fig. And I have to give the clientele a shout out. I was freezing and wet after a Standing Rock Exhibition Benefit and needed to warm up. I walked along the bar and it was packed. They all heard my personal disgruntle murmurs and quickly suggested squeezing me in! Sweet! If I'm solo or with two people, I want to sit at the bar. There's also fridges packed with tons of more beer options!! This place is a breath of fresh air in a very fancy neighborhood for everyone who enjoys the finer things in life but isn't a snob. And you have to come in and get selfies with the rad Caryn Cast art work from the roller skating, beer carrying hog to Kim Jong-Il creepy selfie in the bathroom! Hilarious! She also does the sign outside that ranges from Barb from Stranger Things to Bill Murray. The staff is always chill. And it was cool to meet a Brooklyn neighbor in the city. This is a nice new place that is worth checking out. Stopped in for a couple of beers with a friend and enjoyed the beer and the service. They had an interesting selection of beers on tap and prices are commensurate with the neighborhood, which is to say a bit pricey, but not unexpected. And decent values can be found. We didn't order any food but what I saw other people eating looked good, if not a bit sparse. The location is pretty nice and I think in the spring and fall being able to open the windows to the street will be awesome. Not sure how hot it will get in the summer as the windows are big and let in lots of light! The only slight drawback about the place is that can get loud even when it's half full. Having so many hard surfaces, including tile, looks nice but acoustically can be problematic. I couldn't hear my friend once the place started filling up so we finished our beers and split. The energy is abuzz with trendsetters. Order: got the pickle plate, cheese plate, and a blueberry seltzer. They were each pretty disappointing. The pickle plate was lame because there's barely pickles on there. Each toothpick has the smallest pickle I've ever seen, along with one slice of beet and half of slice of cherry tomato. The cheeses weren't that great, nor very varied. The blackberry seltzer just wasn't good. Had a sip of their Evil Twin beer, and didn't like it, nor did my friend. Service: waited about ten minutes to order with the bartender. Waited an excessive time for something simple. Confusing. Obviously an excellent choice for those into craft beer. I gotta give it to Milk and Hops: if you like sour beers, they killed it. I have yet to see any place carry bottled Crooked Stave sours and Milk and Hops possessed two. Additionally, they had a Grimm tap takeover when my girlfriend and I went and their beer selection to buy was fantastic. Definitely not cheap, but every beer they had was high quality, and I was really impressed with how many great sours they had in stock to purchase. The other three craft beer joints I go to semi-regularly in Manhattan rarely have more than one or two great sours and even rarer do they have reds. Great place for craft beers. Bartender was good. We wanted a hazy IPA and he recommended the Finback DIPA. Wow, it was delicious and hearty. Had a fruity citrusy bouquet and great finish that lingers. He also recommended other IPAs in a can. They were also good, but the Finback was the hit amongst our group. Attached next door is the cocktail bar. However, shots of Jameson was very pricey there. Crowd was mellow. You can actually hear each other and have a conversation here. read more

We stopped here for a dark beer takeover and had a great experience! We dropped by around 6pm on a Friday - it was definitely busy but we were able to grab a spot at a high top for 2 of us. They offered beers in a variety of sizes so you can definitely sample a lot or commit to 1 or 2 beers to try. When we visited it was bar service only (nobody serving at the tables) but they moved the line pretty quickly. We grabbed a snack while we are there - choosing the cubano sandwich ($12) and the kale n' sprouts salad ($8). Both items were delicious, appeared fresh + were a good size for the price. From the outside, this place look a lot like a mini grocery store, but on the inside it's an excellent gathering spot for a group of close friends. If you aren't a huge beer fan, that's okay because I'm not either. But, I love cheese, so this spot is still great for me. FOOD/BEVERAGE (5/5): It has a huge selection of drafted beer, many of which I have never heard of or seen before. I was told that the beer selections will change from time to time, so even if you come here often, you could still try different options. This place also has a fantastic selection of cheese plates. I choose the 'store favorite - 3 cheeses plate', and was very satisfied with the options given! My friends got the grilled cheese sandwich, and were also extremely satisfied. SERVICE (4/5): There weren't many staffs at this place. I only see one person at the bar, and another two people serving the food. However, I didn't feel the service was too slow or none-existence because of the limited staffs members. ENVIRONMENT (3/5): It's not a fancy or decorative spot. As I mentioned before, it felt a lot like a small grocery store. There is a whole wall of different room temperature beers and various sauces. It also has several fridges with cheese and cold beer selections. However, there are also stacks of cardboard boxes filled with beer inventories dispersed around the seating areas, which made the place feels really disorganized. Wooohooo, a bottle shop in NYC! Located in Chelsea on 9th Ave between 20th & 21st, this little craft beer bar shouldn't be missed. The storefront is longer than it is deep, and it has a few garage doors to keep fresh air flowing through. There's several tables & high-top seats - I was actually surprised by how many seats for a bottle shop in Manhattan! Bottle shops are huge in NC but not as widespread in NYC, so I was stoked to check out Milk & Hops when in the area. The bar has 6-8 stools where you can get pints or smaller pours of ~8 taps. I liked that they had a lil of everything (a few IPAs, a stout, a sour, etc). If you don't like what's on tap, you can pay a $2 cork fee to drink anything out of the cooler! All the stuff in the cooler is retail priced & quite affordable - loved the variety too. They have a great amount of local brews as well as national favorites. We also got a charcuterie + cheese board that was delicious! I liked that they have a kitchen to serve sammies & such. They also have take-out meats, cheeses, crackers, and other snacks that pair well with the takeout booze too. All in all, Milk & Hops is a great place for beer snacks & beer/wine in Chelsea... you should check it out next time you're in Manhattan! read more
