Silver Spring has gone through many stages in the past many years and Mike's definitely gives one a glimpse of what it used to be. I started going to Mike's on my BMX in a gaggle of other 12 year-old friends to get a pizza from the hot 20-something counter chick with an attitude only to waste the rest of the day sitting on the front sidewalk or terrorizing the geese at the George Meany Center ( before they started calling the cops on us )....and although everything around it has blended into one long, busy, beige turd Mike's still does its own thing. Its a relic, like a 1981 Trans Am ( you'll understand that comparison once you go there ) and is frequented by many locals still living like that 81' T -top was the new hot car...I can't think of any other place that still does not accept credit cards in Silver Spring, and I cant think of any other place that I hit-up every time I am back home. Their super cheese steak ( double meat ) is insane, even die-hard philly guys give that sub respect, and don't forget to bring cash. P.S. They do have fountain drinks. read more

This place is great. I ordered a entertainment coupon book and had seen there was a Cheesesteak place. so I looked it up on yelp and everyone reviewed it good so off I went. I pulled in and yup it's a hole in the wall. but I was expecting that so no biggie. I went in and Gary met me and gladly took my order. I told him that people suggested the chip and he said it wasn't his favorite, but the wedge fries where great. so I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak, chicken Cheesesteak because he suggested that, and the wedge fries. Me and Gary BS'ed and talked for a while as others got there food and where raving how great it was. Gary was a great host as he had me sample on of my fries before I left. man was he right, they had a great seasoning on them, kind of like red robins seasoning for the fries. As for the rest of the food it was out of this world. The chicken was all white meat, and not a cheapo chicken cheese steak, this was high quality. It was nicely seasoned and well worth the drive. For anyone looking for a good Cheesesteak I would totally recommend this place. But if your looking for a nice sit down place you have to go somewhere else. Me on the other hand, you'll be able to find me in the car with the steamed up windows making sweet love to my Cheesesteak. And if this is my girlfriend reading this, be jealous. be very jealous. I've been here twice to pick up food when my wife and I had a hankering for cheesesteak subs. Somehow this seems to be one of the only places in our area that makes them. As an only option, they make a decent sub, but I compare everything to my favorite place back home in Owings Mills and unfortunately this doesn't come close. Maybe it's the way the subs are tightly wrapped in foil, which results in a thinner sub with softer bread, or maybe it's the frequency with which I bit into chewy parts of the meat, but whatever it was, it just wasn't coming together for me. It was just okay. The boardwalk fries were quite good, though, and the prices were reasonable. And I enjoyed being able to pick up a free soda on my way out (I treated myself to grape!). read more

I used to go to this place when it was under management by the original owner. Back in the day (2006-ish) the cheesesteaks were tasty and full of meat. Since then the place has gone through about 2 different owners and a renovation. Unfortunately the food quality has gone down since. Cheesesteaks tasted OK but just weren't the same sandwiches I ate under the original owner. Today I tried a Californian Chicken sandwich. The taste was alright but it wasn't anything special. Nah, homie. This was overrated. I mean... I am a big cheesesteak person when I take a break from my vegeterian lifestyle... and man what thee eff... this sh*t was horrible! I'd call the place steak Mikes Indeed go with the Super size cheesesteak and you should be happy with the meat. I got onion and they were well fried and maybe the bread was ok but after the last order I wanted more cheese so this time I asked for 2x cheese wiz and 2x provolone for my wife. Woman on the phone seemed to understand this but when we got home I did not see any difference from the first order; still a tad light on cheese Vs. yea' standard sub. They are under new management since March. The cheesesteak was just ok, but for some reason it was flattened like it was pressed, on top of that (pun intended) the roll was barely half full with the meat and other toppings. The outside of the roll and some of the onions were burned, but the meat was juicy. I might give them a second chance, unless I find something better in the area. read more

I love this place, and I love the cheesesteaks. My dad took me here when I first moved to area in 1995. Carryout counter in front with beer and sodas, and in the back is the bar (easier to pull down small drive on left of building and ample parking behind store - entrance on side) Through the years I've been coming here, the owners have changed at least twice since then, with typical good and bad results, most sadly is they the absence of what used to be best onion rings ever. BRING BACK THE BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS PLEASE! The food is nothing fancy, typical bar food. I get the super cheesesteak with provolone and mozzarella sticks. The sub could be fatter but the bread is always good. I usually call for carryout and it's always ready when I get there, but if I have the time I will go to the bar and watch a game. They always have the best waitresses and like someone else said it's typically full of regulars, who are always welcoming. Service is always quick. read more

I placed a order for pick up. I asked for cheesesteak that is no where near philly cheesesteak. I asked that half of the cheesesteak have raw onions on one side. Customer service needs alot of work. Just stopped by here because we were starving after a few hours of thrifting nearby. So glad we did. I had the house red- Woodbridge cab sav, not expensive but a nice easy drinker... And a very heavy pour doesn't hurt. Mike had the Goose Island IPA. We had onion rings, the super cheese steak sub, and the blue cheese burger. First- order a side of chipotle mayo. It comes in the burger, and is great on the rings and on the cheese steak. It is also already on the burger. This is the 2nd best burger I've had in the last 2 years, since I've been in Maryland, and at half the price(also not raw and farm to table) Comes with blue cheese, thick crispy bacon, chipotle mayo, and the most sweet, non-pungent, red onions. My boyfriend normally removes all onions from his food, but he actually liked these. Seriously delicious. The whole combo was something I'll be trying to recreate next time I host a party. As previously mentioned by another poster- the onion rings are not the old recipe... But if you add the chipotle mayo you may be able to forget that. The outside of the building did throw me off initially but I pressed forward. I order the super philly with boardwalk fries. My food was ready rather quickly which I found impressive until I got home. The sandwich was good bread was soft however my sandwich was completely dry (no ketchup and no mayo) and was missing ingredients such as lettuce. I think in their rushing they forgot to complete my sandwich. Also it didn't seem like my sandwich was really that stuffed with meat it makes me nervous about how small the regular cheesesteaks are. I stopped in last Thursday for late lunch. I had a gyro platter and my daughter had the Italian cold cut sub. She said it was the best cold cut sub she had ever had. My gyro platter came with good "boardwalk" fries, seasoned well and served with vinegar. Yum. The place has a neighborhood bar feel, relaxed and friendly . The chicken kebab over rice or over salad is yummy. If you like Gyros, you will love these, with the homemade tziki sauce, its great!
