Ordinarily this place would get a 4 star rating from our family, we've been loyal customers since it was Su Hong's and then continued to patronize after it changed hands, so for about 15 years. Always loved the food . During the shelter in place we've avoided eating out but finally took the plunge as things begin to ease at restaurants. We ordered three lunch specials and were very impressed with the way the social distancing and safety precautions were set up for pickup. Only we get home dig into our lunch and discovered an unwelcome surprise in our number two lunch special (general's chicken), a cooked fly! Needless to say the meal was a lot less enjoyable after that. I did give them a call to let them know what had happened and asked them to be more careful with their food prep. The person who picked up my call had a hard time understanding me, took my call pretty rushed and though they asked my name didn't bother to actually take it down. They said they'd give me a free credit but given the circumstances a full reimbursement would have been nice. I guess we should have held out longer from ordering. read more

I had been going to this spot (formerly Su Hong to-go) and the sit down Su Hong for more 20 years! This was my all time favorite Chinese food spot by far! Since the ownership change to Chef Kwan's, it's a little different. Mostly the same staff and same menu items but the food is not as good as I remember. What was once super flavorful is now a bit bland. The Ma Po tofu was absolutely TERRIBLE! It had a bitter flavor and just, not good. And all throughout my meal (I ordered several a la cart items) I kept crunching on little sand like grains of I don't know what. Certainly not what was was hoping for after spending $50 and not having their food for months. A bit disappointed. :( read more

I went to pick up food today and they were letting people in without wearing any masks or face coverings!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wanted to like this place. I was craving Chinese for over a year and my husband finally agreed to get it. Sweet and sour pork was not right at all. Sauce it came with was meant for completely different meal altogether. They messed up our order and gave us fries ride instead of chow mean... I don't eat rice :( read more

This used to be Su Hong's takeout, it's still the same menu, and it's dashed convenient. I particularly appreciate that it was open Sunday evening when everything else around was dead. It is expensive, however. If you order items from near the bottom of the section on the menu, the counter clerk will compliment you on your taste. Kung pao prawns: vegetables were carrots and mushrooms, with a little onion. What the heck? I've rarely found carrots and mushrooms in kung pao, certainly not to the virtual exclusion of anything else. No zucchini and not a trace of peanuts. Weird. But the sauce was kung pao, I ordered kung pao, they told me it was kung pao. At least the shrimp were good. Mongolian lamb: Could have been Mongolian beef (a dollar cheaper) for all that I could tell from the meat. Meat, green onion, crunchy noodles, that's it. Didn't need any rice. Came in an oven container, not a microwave one, because this would need to be crispy on reheating. read more

Since the new ownership took over years ago, we have found this restaurant to be inconsistent and have not written a review. But today, we ordered a couple a la carte dishes at lunchtime (General's Chicken and Combination Chow Fun), and they were both really excellent. What a great surprise! I've been eating Su Hong / Chef Kwan since I was a kid and have never found better Chinese food in the Bay Area. My favorites are Generals Chicken, Su Hong Beef, Chicken Salad and Lemon Chicken. Not good!! I love spicy but my Kung Pao Chicken was sooo spicy...like in a bad way. Too many red pepper flakes...who wants to crunch on those every bite. Rice tasted like day old rice. And the H and S Soup...literally tasted like hot water:( read more

IT'S NO SU HONG. Have been going there for decades not just years. Will not be going back. Besides higher prices (just like other places) the quality and taste have gone downhill. Chicken salad no longer tasty and hardly any of those little white crispy noodles. Kung pao chicken not as flavorful and with gristle. BBQ pork chow mein noodles are different size , less sauce and fewer strips of pork. Orders occasionally wrong or missing items. Blame it on the pandemic, supply chain, shortage of skilled workers or whatever, but restaurants are going to have to step up to keep consumers from changing habits permanently. read more

Really good quality Chinese food- veg tables are fresh and cuts of meat are both great quality and great quantity. Staff are quick and GREAT at their craft. I regularly get their lunch box which includes an entree, rice, noodles and an egg roll. Right in downtown Menlo Park so parking is typically horrible and the parking enforcement is absolutely the worst so be careful!
