Incredible what you can find when you aren't looking. I stumbled upon a gem, with a good bit of history. On a layover in Scranton I was walking around hungry, but was unsure of where to go to fix that. So I do what I always do, walk aimlessly. Just a few steps away from the University of Scranton, Chef Von & Mom sits. I entered and was immediately greeted with warm smiles, and beautiful faces. Mom was present, and gave me a brief history lesson. She informed me her family actually established the first black owned restaurant in Scranton. At that point I had heard enough, the smells coming from the kitchen had already decided for me. I asked Mom whats a popular dish I would enjoy, she suggested the BBQ sandwich with the fries. The order came out very quickly and piping hot. The BBQ was juicy, and the fries were seasoned to perfection. I loved the toasted bun, it held the moisture of the coleslaw well without getting soggy. The BBQ sauce was a nice compliment to the overall sandwich, nothing else was needed, this was indeed a hit. I appreciate the incredible customer service, but I love that this family has continued an incredible tradition of bringing Scranton quality food with no exceptions. Pro tip: After I left I looked this place up, the owners Chef Von & Mom were on "Next Level Chef" with Gordon Ramsey. Check out their episode, it originally aired on FOX. read more

Traveled out of town and made a pit stop in Scranton to fuel up, thank God we did because this place was AMAZING! Great customer service. Great flavors. Great ambiance (love me some R&B). We've been wanting to check out Von & Mom's since Von was on NLC, and we're so happy we finally made it out! We went on a Saturday right after they opened and immediately we were greeted with a warm welcome. I ordered the Von's grilled chicken sandwich with honey mustard, tomato, lettuce and cooper sharp cheese. This was easily the juiciest and most flavorful piece of grilled chicken I've ever had. You could tell it was marinated beautifully and the seasoning was perfect. The house honey mustard was BANGIN. The roll was also perfect for the sandwich. My husband got the rodeo burger with onion rings, candied bacon, cooper cheese and bbq sauce. He thought the bacon was legit, and loved it as well. I thought the bbq sauce was wonderfully smokey. We both upgraded to garlic parm fries and they were loaded with both. Crispy on the outside and soft/ fluffy on the inside. Huge portions for a great price, and for the quality you can't go wrong. Von's mom came out and chatted with us while adjusting the heat in the dining room, she was so sweet and welcoming. Everything was extremely clean, we liked the ambiance of the restaurant, and of course loved the food. The customer service was the icing on the cake. We will definitely be back! read more

I got takeout from here after hearing that Chef Von was on Next Level!! The food definitely lives up to the hype. Unfortunately, they don't have consistent hours and there was a long wait for food. But we planned ahead and ordered right when they opened to pick up near dinner time because we did our research. On Facebook, they post when they will open (whether it's 4:30pm or 5pm or something), along with the menu for that day. It looked like generally it stays the same with some tweaks or includes a new special (when I went they had chicken and waffles that day). I called a few times around opening time but the lines were busy. Luckily, it only took a couple tries to get through and we were able to place our order. The worker said it would take around an hour and a half, so I suggested that we could pick it up in around 2 hours if that would help them. The inside decor isn't mind blowingly beautiful but there are plenty of chairs and tables like food court seating. We had a big order and they prepared it accurately and timely (thanks so much!). I got a single LA burger and it was so delicious. The avocado was fresh and candied bacon was so yummy. It was a huge burger, and the fries were not soggy. Everything was also reasonably priced and not over expensive. Burger were under $20 and for those with fries, you could upgrade to garlic parm fries for an additional $3, which were delicious and I'd recommend trying one. read more

The worst food and service. Poor quality, doubtful the 'burgers' are meat. There's no smell of meat cooking coming out of their kitchen. I was served a patty 1/16 of an inch thickness, and dry . If they didn't drown everything in barbeque sauce it would have no flavor. The fries were short end pieces. We were give a four packets of ketchup amounting in 1 tsp ketchup. They took my orders and served three other customers that arrived after I did. Even though I explained that I'm diabetic and my sugars are low. I could not eat it and ate some because my blood sugar was dropping. My guest ate a few fries. I made my complaint and was verbally abused. I was awakened by abdominal pain and diarrhea at 3am. For me, this was a Friday night where I wanted something to fill my belly but keep it easy on the gut. A friend noted that his sister from Florida talked about this little spot in Scranton that is owned by a local celebrity. I checked out the yelp menu, nothing screamed unique. Boy was I wrong. Id argue this is a pivotal local gem of an establishment. I will admit that my food came out a little late. However, on a Friday evening I was chatting it up with my friends in the casual style dining room. Mom and the other patrons were good company and just about everyone in the were loyal customers. The food scratches that itch that you crave when you want something substantial and flavorful yet homey and high-quality. The fries had a nice crisp on them and a fluffy interior. Perfect salt and a nice greasiness that sets it apart from the typical diner fry. The chicken Caesar wrap was a light-fare purchase compared to some of the other items. The wrap was pleasantly toasted which added a nice crisp to the bite. The Caesar dressing maintained a distinct heaviness specific to this Caesar variant. I noted a distinct grated parm texture that added that cheesy richness to every bite. The Romain lettuce added that herbal yet crunchy variation and each bite had a healthy amount of chicken with no weird bites. Very high quality wrap. I had a bit of the rodeo burger which was phenomenal as well. Certainly, heavier than the chicken Caesar wrap but certainly as high in quality. I've never been a huge onion ring guy but I can testify that the pillowy texture added some significant variation to this sandwich against the thick-cut dissolve-in-your-yet-snap-at-the-bite bacon. The burger seemed to be smashed with those high-flavor toasted bits. A layer of toasted cheese maximized the flavor profile. Side-note: I found that this burger did not leave a weird metallic taste in my mouth. Not sure if that's just me but I thought I would note it here. In historical downtown Scranton !!!! We arrived on a Friday evening about 6:00 o clock! If you can call in your order. They have two separate phone lines . Due to the popularity of next level chef they are slammed. It is a mom and pop shop and family ran. The wait was 2 hours for takeout . Since we traveled from Ohio we ordered and began to sight see in the iconic downtown. Service was polite. Locals were kind and made menu recommendations. I wanted a buffalo wrap but that was sold out. My husband ordered von's smash burger. It was 10/10 . Delicious and flavorful. I ordered the wings 3/10. Fries were well seasoned with lemon pepper and tasted like light fry seasoning/seasoning salt . I did not enjoy them. Nothing spectacular simply wings. Sauce was nice it was the chicken I didn't like . Chicken was unbreaded so sauce didn't really adhere like I would've wanted. They were generous with the sauce. I would describe the hot garlic sauce as sweet and savory . Smash burger was $17. Got an order of fries $6. Wings $15 for ten. Overall 2 out of the 3 things we ordered were a hit!!! Best burger I've had, and im pretty well traveled and have a versatile pallet from ordering a bunch of different types of food from all over. We're from the seattle area. Me and my 17 yr old kid stumbled across this place on Google. We first went to voodoo brewery, but we weren't feeling the vibe, zero interaction and expensive food. After 15 mins of me researching, I saw Chef vons and mom with 5 whole Stars and left voodoo. We got there and found parking pretty quickly. Not as daunting as I thought it would be. When we got there we thought they were closed because the restaurant was empty (how???) We ordered the peanut butter bacon burger with fries, because why not try? And omg. Even though it was slathered with delicious peanut butter, you could taste every single component on there. The peanut butter wasnt masking ANYTHING. The home-made patty alone and whatever secret sauce they had on there, was mind blowing. It shone through the peanut butter, THATS how good it was. There was a little bit of a wait, which we didn't care, it looked like a new family business, but damn. The wait was worth it. We're only in scranton for 2 days but we are Definitely coming back and ordering different things to try so we can give them the shout out they deserve bc; "Whats good on the menu?" Them: everything. And I absolutely believe it. We were even laughing and smiling over how delicious the burger was. This place is a five star restaurant, BUT twice they have made our order incorrectly. Before I get to my gripes, I will talk about the general vibe and food of this place. Five freakin' STAR. This place has it GOING ON. The staff are very friendly, the food is to die for, and the price tag is justified with the way they FILL UP YOUR PLATE!!! The wait times can be long on a busy night, but they will always get the job done and deliver a meal you won't regret ordering. I can guarantee that people drive off the highway to get some of this before reaching their destination!!! A major-city level restaurant in the booming city that is Scranton, Pennsylvania. New York City's got nothing on this place. So why three stars? I notched a star for the times they have not paid attention to detail on my orders. On two separate occasions, I have asked for no ranch on my products, and both times I have received ranch in my items. Me? I'll eat anything this place makes. My best friend however is selective when it comes to his food, especially his sauces, so he prefers to go light in the sauce game. The first time we ordered from here and received ranch after requesting no ranch, we chalked it up under an honest mistake. The place is BUSY, and definitely slammed with orders so it's okay! The second time however (last night actually), I made a hard emphasis on no ranch. I ordered two items: the chicken bacon ranch wrap and the buffalo pierogies (which comes with ranch). When I ordered, I asked for a "chicken bacon wrap, no ranch" and "buffalo pierogies with NO ranch". I even made a light hearted joke emphasizing to the person over the phone that my buddy would kill me if I got ranch when he asked for no ranch! We both laugh and the order is in. An hour and change later, we pick up our order, go home & open our food and the pierogies are SOAKED in ranch. It was almost disrespectful. I felt so bad for my buddy, and he ended up giving me the majority of his highly anticipated pierogies. His wrap also had ranch in it! The pierogies were delicious, but that's not the point. For a restaurant that boasts having a "Next-Level Chef", they sometimes lack in the attention to detail department- something that occurs too frequently to look the other way. Other than these two recent incidents, this place would have a 5* rating from me (and might in the future!) I highly recommend this place to anyone unfamiliar to the area, and definitely worth stopping your road trip to get if you have time. Try your best to emphasize what you don't want, but cut them some slack one or twice- they do get hammered but the food is delicious. read more

We drove a couple hours to visit and got there as early as possible because of warnings of long wait times on their FB page. We were greeted IMEDIATELY (and so warmly), and were advised of a 20 minute wait, which was pretty accurate. There was plenty of seating while we waited, which was nice, and the food came up hot, and looking JUST as good as the pictures they post on social media. The burgers are great, but NOTHING can prepare you for how amazing the fries are! We got three different kinds of fries with our smash burgers because we couldn't decide, and had NO regrets. The garlic parm fries are the best I've had anywhere. Again, cannot stress how friendly the staff was, and the family pictures on the wall added to the feeling of being at "Mom's house." No one seemed rushed or chaotic, despite being busy. It was a really great experience and I can't wait to go back! read more

Wish i could convince myself this place is better. The food is good, i cant deny that. I still stand by my principle that a $20 burger should not be in a styrofoam container if gotten it to stay. Came in after the chef was eliminated from the show, wanted to still support him/a small business. Yet again, not even a word or nod of acknowledgement from the chef, even when the cashier went back and told him we said it was too bad what happened, he completely ignored the comment. Maybe he was busy, whatever. Was told a 45 min wait but we still agreed. While we were there, i watched at least 5 doordash or ubereats drivers angrily wait. One or two canceled and just left. The register girl was trying her best to be apologetic for the wait. I watched as maybe less than 10 items (judging by styrofoam containers) were sent out of the kitchen the entire time we waited for our order. The worst and most unacceptable part, the chef was yelling in the kitchen the F bombs and N words. I couldnt believe it. Its an open wall between the kitchen and dining area. There were kids in the place not long before that happened. Very unprofessional. Almost AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, got my food. I wouldnt have waited if i knew it was going to be that long. I literally ran into this restaurant looking for something else online a while ago. Today, I had a taste for some wings so I decided I'm going to find this place and see how it goes. Let me start by saying, the customer service was OUTSTANDING, so you don't even mind the wait and I am a firm believer of getting your monies worth when you are buying food. Now, I ordered the honey mustard wings ($13) and an order of fries ($6). Now, my initial thought was why are these fries $6 but, I thought maybe they are fresh fries, meaning they cut up their potatoes, so that kind of justifies the price. When I got my bag to go the first thing I noticed was how light the bag was. I even text a friend and said to them, this bag is mighty light for a meal that was like $21. But I said I'd stay optimistic until I got home to eat. Well to say I was disappointed is an understatement. The wings were subpar and didn't taste like honey mustard at all and the fries were terrible and not fresh cut fries. Needless to say, i didn't even finish the meal, I got so upset I tossed it. I mind as well had gotten Popeyes or even KFC......Looks like their burgers are great, maybe I should've gotten that. I don't normally leave reviews but that is how upset I was.
