While I can't vouch for the quality of their large menu, I can say that our sesame chicken wasn't edible. It was chewy like jerky. Very good old school Chinese food. The hot and sour soup was decent and the portions for the entrees are large, considering the price. Better Chinese food exists in the metro area (e.g. Tasty Corner downtown) but there are no decent Chinese restaurants in North PDX so I'm glad Zhao is around. read more

I don't live too far from here but this is still a great go-to for me. Their food is totally solid especially given the prices; take advantage of their combos and family dinners. The BBQ pork is also excellent. The portion sizes are very generous which I also appreciate. Service has always been quick and friendly. I've ordered take out but they're also on Uber Eats so you can get them delivered too. If it's any consolation, they've never once messed up my order which is always a plus. I really like this place and will continue to be a regular there. read more

This spot is pretty decent. The staff there are quite friendly. The food tastes good - I tried XLB and Sesame chicken. The sesame chicken is spicier than others' but I like it hot so it works for me. The rice quality/taste is average - could be better. What I liked a lot about this place is it seems pretty clean. My daughter and I went tonight to eat at Chef Zhao their food usually delicious but tonight I just can't put my finger on it. We ordered apetizers and that was good then no sooner we got that our food started coming in. I had to wait on mine. The pork fried rice did not have any peas, carrots or scrambled egg it looked like white rice with a little coloring with bits of pork thrown in. Not what I expected, to say the least I was disappointed. The rest of the food was tasty but it seemed that they were in a hurry for us to leave. We had not even finished and the bill and fortune cookies were put on the table. Then after payment we were standing by the table and she came over and started cleaning the table. First off, let's be clear, this is Americanized Chinese food, so for all those rating it as "not authentic", it's not suppose to be. That said, I ordered something like 15 dishes for a party I had and everyone loved the food (and being Chinese myself and having friends who have visited China, we understand the difference), and one person even commented that she had Ma Po Tofu before, but always hated it until now. Everything was great and nice portions (they didn't sacrifice quality for portion size, it was just right) sizes. They even gave us a free egg drop soup and free toys for our big order! Favorite Chinese takeout cuisine right here, look no further in the St John's NOPO area. The sesame chicken and green beans (medium spice) were the star for our meal. I've never had house fried rice it contains all the meat but I'll probably just do veggies or one meat next time. The Lo mein I recommend for the noodle fans as it's smaller noddles and tasty. They forgot the fortune cookies last time so make sure to ask haha. I'm gonna have to compare: -generals chicken vs orange vs sesame chicken and report back bc all 3 are choice from here. The house fried rice was seasoned well and had nice chunks of the various proteins and was not skimpy at all. The mongolian beef was your standard but the cuts were on the thinner side. Lastly the noodles had me hesitant at first as they were on the lighter side but after trying them they had good flavor and paired well with the chicken. I would rate Chef Zhao two stars if not for their shrimp dumplings and orange chicken. Everything else they just kind of phone in. Fried rice is always dry and flavorless as is the chow mein. Sometimes the white rice taste and feels like it's been sitting all day. I can't speak to atmosphere at the restaurant itself. This is one of the places that you question whether you should go or not but after you do you are completely happy you did and upset that you wasted so much time deciding on going! We went during a weeknight around 6 PM and there were probably five other tables. With the door being close to where we were seated it was kind of drafty due to it being so cold outside. I think that is the only thing I could find wrong with dining there. They have a nice beer selection and their menu is wonderful. We were so indecisive because everything looked so good. We got the eggrolls to start off with and they are huge! Wonderfully seasoned and the fried exterior was excellent. It was so crispy yet light. The two entrées we decided on were Mongolian chicken and the Kung pow trio. Each of these were absolutely amazing. They come with a side of rice and a free small cup of soup. They also give hot tea at the table with the waters. The tea tasted very nice and was great due to a cold evening. We would definitely return to this place again. So I don't really care for the people that run this place. Actually it was one old rude lady. I drove all the way from Forest Grove mainly to come get their hot and sour soup and I didn't make it in time which I was fine. I didn't realize they closed 30 min before I got there. Leaving without anything was fine because it was my fault and I planned to do something in the area anyway after. But when I grabbed on the door and realized it was locked, the lady just shoo'd me away with her hands like really rudely, like something that you would not even do to a bum, but something that you would probably see someone do to someone homeless. Instead of coming to the door and saying I'm sorry we're closed or just pointing to the sign, it was extremely rude. Not something you do to someone trying to come in and give you business. But anyway, their hot and sour soup is the best soup that I have found in 20 years, just like the hot and sour soup that used to be at a restaurant called The Pagoda in Portland 20 years ago. This is almost spot on to what that was. I would definitely drive all the way here from Forest Grove for their soup. The other food is well made too! This place checked all the boxes for casual dining . First and foremost the food was spectacular. Every dish we ordered,and there were many in our large group, was cooked perfectly. There wasn't too much salt, sugar , and oil to any of the meals. Crowd favorites were sesame beef, sautéed eggplant, Mapo tofu to name a few. Our server Kenny was friendly and attentive. I love Chef Zhao. Probably my favorite spot for Chinese food. It is always fresh and delicious when I get my food. I've tried a lot of things from their menu and my partner love it too. We usually get eggrolls, general t'sao chicken , sesame beef or chicken, lo mein, bbq pork, mar far chicken, Kung Lao chicken, lunch combo, and so much more. All of it has been delicious.
