The crispy basil chicken was very good, had an appealing crunch, and the veggies complemented well. A definite reorder. Unfortunately, the Pad See Ew (one of my favorite Thai dishes) was a big miss. The cucumber salad was refreshing on a hot day, a bit bland (add lemon juice), ample portion for a very good price. Nothing maliciously or aggressively bad about this place. The people were friendly enough. The place is clean. I don't understand the appeal of places where I'm asked to tip - in advance, no less - but have to order and receive food from a counter and am expected to bus my own dishes. The scent of room-temperature raw meat filled the air upon first entering, and the smell of the dish over all was pungent. The food was just not good. The chicken was chewy and tasted like it was in the edge of rancid. The salad is bargain ingredients in huge chunks that have been drizzled with a bit of poppyseed dressing, but just over the top. The rice smelled, tasted, and had the texture of "made fresh yesterday." I expected $21 (with a bottle of Pepsi) would be too much because the portions would be small, but it turns out it was too much for such poor quality and bad tasting food. read more

Hollywood has its share of good food around and I really wasn't sure what I wanted but, Teriyaki Town was right across the street from where I was and it was looking good. It was after the lunch rush, of course I'm assuming there's a lunch rush, and I was just plain hungry. Many choices and I went with a chicken and beef teriyaki combo and it came with salad and rice. Too bad I didn't see the spicy menu until after the fact...burn. Pricing is really fair. Chicken bowl for $5.85 seemed like a really good deal imo. $0.50 extra to make it spicy was worth it, if you like spicy. The decor and interior is nothing to write home about. I did notice there was the lowest level on the spicy chart that read "spicy" but if my food was the lowest level of spicy then these guys are running off a different Scoville scale but DAMN was it good!! It was SPICY but had great flavor that came along with that bite. I tasted garlic which I love. There was plenty of sticky white rice too which is really what got me through that heat. The steamed veggies were really good and cooked perfectly. They had some sauce on it that was good. There was plenty of chicken in my bowl as well. For the beverages... They've got jarritos, Arizona iced teas, Snapple, soda. Bottles of water are $1. It looked like they even offer complimentary hot tea. I wonder why I do not listen to that voice of reason in my head. The same voice that moments before I entered the door to this business said "Do NOT go here... seriously... the food will likely be overpiced and horrible." My son and I got a combination meat dish 'to go' this consisted of the following: Three unidentifiable meat-like substances: 1.) Pork? (which I SWEAR was in a ketchup sauce) 2.) Teriyaki Chicken? (which looked like chicken but had an odd consistency) 3.) Teriyaki Beef? (I don't even want to analyze this one, but it tasted gamey) Two rubbery/gelatinous gyoza filled with another unidentifiable meat. The taste was bland, the gyoza sauce (or ponzu?) seemed to be diluted soy sauce? Steamed cabbage with carrot shreds, and tiny broccoli florets. This lacked anything (sauce, flavor, etc.) I am all about frugality but if you're gonna slap cabbage on a plate that your selling I'd rather see a scoop of Kim chi. And... Steamed white rice. I think that you could find plenty of hole-in-the-wall teriyaki joints in this town that will provide a much more satisfying dining experience that is light on the pocket book. I have to give kudos to how nice the woman was behind the counter, but it didn't help the food taste any better. One of the other people that reviewed this place said the owner doesn't really have a vocabulary that spans wider than Ok and Thanks.. this is true.. but he seemed nice enough and ran my debit card with no problems. I ordered the Chicken Ramen and the broth was super tasty and a little spicy. You can order yours spicier for .50 extra.. but I don't think I'll ever take them up on that. The restaurant was very clean and the tables were well stocked with sauce and chopsticks. You can get self serve water for free very easily. My food got to me very quickly and the bowl was huge. Was an alright place to me; clean looking inside and the lady at the cashier, so polite. Ordered the chicken teriyaki and egg rolls. Good portion of food, just enough rice to meat, seasoned alright, (taste reminds me of the seasoning packets from beef ramen noodles). This is probably one of the better teriyaki places I've been to that hasn't saturated their plates with 70% filler (rice or noodles), 20% meat, and 10% veggies that I've experienced with other teriyaki places here in Portland. For the amount of food for the price paid is exponential, lots to eat. I had the beef yakisoba (Medium Spicy) and my wife had the chicken/beef combo. I also ordered a side of spring roll and two fountain drinks...$32 with tip. OK...the break down. My wife's plate...no complaints...at least, on her end (I didn't taste it). The beef yakisoba was fine. The common problem is when you go to some of these places and you ask for spicy it seems it just gets drowned out by the exorbitant amounts of sweet sauce that goes with the spicy and just kills whatever other flavors you may want to taste (of course I might have made the mistake of not ordering spicy with less sweet sauce if it was optional). As for the fried spring rolls, they were average. At least, they were evenly cooked in which I'm appreciative. For me, I would come here again if in the neighborhood. I would probably try something else, though. Or order the same with less sweet sauce, if available! read more

Reading Teriyaki Town's conflicting reviews, I was confused. How could it elicit such love and yet such hate? But after dining there last night, I am sad to report that I get it. I really do. I, too, am feeling conflicted. I want to write a nice review for the atmosphere (perky if somewhat sterile) and the very kind lady behind the counter. I want to write a nice review because they are clearly trying so hard. But I also need to write a bad review because of the filthy windowsills, and because that same kind lady behind the counter messed up our order, and because the food was mediocre. But then I want to write a nice review because the kind lady was horrified that she had messed up our order and asked if she could "treat" us in recompense. How sweet, even if we did not take her offer. And the food wasn't dreadful, it just wasn't... amazing. Or great. Or fascinating, or any of the other things I want my food to be in this foodie town.
