My kid lives near this tiny take-out restaurant and gets dinner here every 1-2 weeks. She and her beau say the food is great and reasonably priced and the portions are huge. So we decided to get a few dishes tonight as no-one wants to cook the day before Thanksgiving (right??!). I went with her to pick up the meals. The place is small but really quirky and cute, with lots of plants and greenery. (I was surprised to read that someone complained about the plants in their review. Really? Who doesn't like plants?). And yes, the place felt cluttered, with the plants and the desk of condiments and chairs to sit on as you wait for your meals to be prepared. The place won't win any medals in Architectural Digest. But I thought it was quirky, and cute, and it is quintessentially Portland. (And when I was there, there was absolutely no odors in the place, as another reviewer wrote. If the place smelled bad, there's no WAY ON EARTH my kid or I would ever patronize the place!). And the food was great. We got my kid and her boyfriends' usual teriyaki beef and we also got orange chicken (both these meals came with rice), and also my kid's favorite yakisoba noodles (omg they are so good. I have no idea what seasoning they use, but these noodles are reddish in color and taste amazingly good). The portions are humongous and easily enough for 2-3 meals. I can generally stretch this to a second lunch, which puts me at about $4 a lunch. You genuinely can't beat that. Chicken was well seasoned and not dry; I really liked their teriyaki sauce-well balanced and slightly sweet side (but not too sweet); good steamed white rice and cones with shall salad with white dressing. While I enjoyed strips of chickens with crunchy broccoli and onions, trying to figure it out the flavor...and I came to a conclusion that this noodle dish has some influence of Japanese-style-spaghetti "Napolitan" dish!! Hmm, yelp did me wrong on this stop. I was looking for some decent teriyaki nearby and happened to be in North Portland. Checked out a few places on Yelp and decided here because of the thumbs up for yakisoba. Chicken yakisoba and chicken fried rice was what I ordered - both were not to my liking. The rice was drenched in oil ... so much so that they had to use 2 trays because oil had spilled everywhere. Very little flavor and it was a greasy mess! The yakisoba was not the noodle type I like and looked different than the pictures I saw. They use a thicker noodle that was not appetizing. The sauce was sweet - probably teriyaki sauce - and I regretting my choice as soon as I opened the to go container. I won't be back .. they stockpile all kinds of trash outside their business which makes the area look unkept. read more

With that said, I mustered up some courage and adventured into this restaurant. This place is located in St Johns district of Portland. It seems to be a small family owned restaurant with no thrills. Don't let this hole in the wall place fool you, because it has some great tasting teriyaki dishes! The portions are generous and the price was under $8. I ordered my plate as a take out. It was Teriyaki chicken and eggrolls. Sooo good! I love that they have condiments, like ginger slices, you can take with you, as well as more teriyaki sauce, and hot chili sauce. I absolutely love this place and am always happy. The fried rice is my favorite I've ever had, and I'm never disappointed. I always get 2 meals and have a hard time stopping and saving some for later. It is nothing fancy looking but good people and great food. I live across the street and work from home, so if lunchtime rolls around and I realize I don't have any food in the house, I may find myself here. My go-to is the yakisoba. It is a very large portion-- enough for two meals-- and includes a substantial amount of veggies (broccoli, cabbage, carrots and onions). Only $7.25. The teriyaki is okay, too, but veggie-wise, it's lacking. It just comes with a small iceberg-based side salad covered in an icky dressing that gets all up in the teriyaki sauce. St Johns Kitchen isn't reaching for any Michelin stars or James Beard awards. They're just looking to feed people quickly and cheaply, and at that they do a pretty good job. read more

I have frequented this establishment many many times in the last 6 years, I have never smelled anything other than delicious smelling food (and cleaner like Mr. Clean at times) I do suggest that if you get your food to go, and if it comes with a salad, request the salad to be put into a separate container, because if you don't, the salad will get warm. read more

This place is very close to our home, so we decided to give it a try over the weekend. First impression when walking in was that the placed smelled REEKED of some sort of bleach/cleaner solution. A door or window definitely should have been left open. We figured that take out was our only option. The teriyaki options on the board apparently were wrong, because the grumpy man behind the counter informed that I couldn't get teriyaki chicken with steamed veggies because everything just comes with a salad. I mentioned the pictures show steamed veggies, and he said the pictures are wrong. My guy asked about the spicy chicken, which we were then informed that the prices were also wrong.
