Had no idea this place was just right around the corner and with great reviews!!! Such a sweet Japanese duo running the place and making really good Yakisoba. My husband and I ordered 2 lunch specials and they were exactly what we needed. There's only 2 of them at the shop so please be patient! Call in your order if needed. For convenience and cravings, I wouldn't for sure return for more!

This isn't my first pick for Asian food, but Bong Teriyaki does an alright job. It's located extremely close to me, which is why I found myself trying it out a little bit ago. The prices are pretty fair, though I wish everything cost a dollar or two less. From my experience, this place is a little slow with takeout orders. I ordered 2 two choice combos plates (chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu & chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki) when I was the only customer in the place and waited for probably 20-25 minutes. The chicken was pretty mediocre. It was chewy and tasted a little overcooked. I'd give it a 2 out of 5. My boyfriend's chicken katsu was also overcooked and dried out. So why the 3 out of 5 stars? The beef teriyaki I had redeemed this place. It reminded me of authentic Korean BBQ beef. It was tender and nicely soaked up their teriyaki sauce. My recommendation? Skip the chicken, order the beef!

Fast Japanese food at a very reasonable price. Food is good but nothing out of this world. If you are a broke college student like me I'd recommend the $5 chicken bowl. (It's a hefty portion)

Pork spicy skewers Veggie tempura so delicious. Great portions. I always have left overs for work the next day.

Side of sweet and sour chicken... Not a fan of the sauce though.

Eek. Not fresh and not very flavorful. Most likely won't be back. Would rather just go to Mashita in NW.

Aspen greets me like an old friend, a happy welcome into an expansive, ethereal space that feels more like LA than (perennially in the 90s) Portland. Low lounge & hi-top tables surround an open-air kitchen - transparency in the atmosphere as well as their "nose-to-tail" cooking techniques. The bar is long and dotted with glowing agate votives, vines extending down over a broad selection of booze (whisky & bourbon by style, including Japanese). One menu offers cheeky cocktails, mocktails, and a wide variety of Willamette bottles + a broad selection of European & South American wines. Another menu presents Cold dishes/RAW bar/Small Plates & Larger (sharing recommended). First course is a bluefin TUNA SASHIMI (butchered in-house with absolute precision) alongside a Serrano black sugar tamari (RIDICULOUS blend of salty/umami/spicy/sweet and smartly balanced by THICK-cut servings of tuna & chutoro (3x3). The fresh fish shines, as does explosive flavor in the sauce. Brilliant, bravo! Second, bartender recommends a house-favorite DUMPLING - this is one like never before, blending Linguiça (a Portuguese sausage), leeks, and cabbage that has a familiar texture within tissue-thin rice dumplings, but completely original umami, especially paired with the Japanese curry. It's wholesome and comforting, not too filling, and entirely new. THIRD if I MAE (pronunciation, questionable) - LAMB SPARE RIBS in a heaping portion with sweet/spicy tamarind sticky sauce that's barely reminiscent of BBQ, a perfect counter-balance to fatty, slightly gamey lamb. It's the cilantro herb salad on top & green olive tapenade that make it sing - textures and flavors are exotic, playful, herbal & funky (in a good way) all at once. Whether you're seeking a hot date night, a special staycation (right here in the Historic Arts District), or hosting a board meeting, there is space and plenty of taste for all, with a refinement in technique characteristic of larger cities. A sweet and savory reminder that family is a state of mind, and we're all connected for better or worse.

I have the salmon-cucumber-avocado roll all the time, so I went with the spicy mayo roll since this was just my go to roll with spicy mayo, and it really fell short of expectations. First, the salmon looked a bit gray, but that happens sometime (fish market inject dyes to make salmon look more pink, and undyed salmon can turn a bit gray in just a few hours) and it tasted fine. The wasabi was a really unnatural neon green color (wish I remembered to take a photo) The spicy mayo was oddly bland and the whole thing just didn't have the bright flavor of super fresh ingredients I've become accustom to living next to the Puget Sound. I would give this place another try next time I'm in Portland, and I think I would try one of the more unique dishes he offers.
