I've been coming here to Chef dog house for their chili cheese dogs. But, did you know that they also serve breakfast items too. I had a breakfast burrito a long time ago and totally forgot about it. This was prior to COVID. Since I had an appointment near by. I figured why not go and have some breakfast. So I got some French toast with a side of eggs and bacon. My daughter just wanted the potato hash. My husband got a western omelette. OMG! The French toast was so good. The staff was very patient with us because looking at their menu. You just want to try it all. I finally came to a decision of just getting French toast. Maybe next time. I'll try the French toast sandwich. As I've said before, in the hands of a master, even the most humble ingredients can be gourmet cuisine (well, I said something like that; but, you get the picture). Hamburgers, hotdogs, rings and fries; you can't get much more humble than that. But, rest assurred, Chef is a master. Upon arrival I noted that the atmosphere was as plain as a school cafeteria. If you want fancy and sophisticated, you want someplace else. If you want simply great working class fare, get in line. This is what I did; and, to my advantage, the two guys in front of me seemed to have more questions for the sole employee than your average Jeoprady contestant. This gave me the chance to study the menu. It all looked good, but my eyes kept coming back to the Southern Dog. So let it be done, with a side of onion rings Within five minutes I had my food, hot off the grill, while noting that the pokey guys in front of me were already chowing down, and that the televison on the wall was showing programming other than golf or bowling. Fast sevice and entertainment while I waited. Always a plus. With bag in hand, I headed out to the car, noting the heat radiating from the golden yellow rings within. Flipping open the dog container, it was immediately clear that attempting to eat and drive would quickly result in my having made a food based fashion statement; so, I waited to get home before chowing down. First, the aforementioned golden yellow onion ring batter had a crispy, light consistency that allowed the inner onion's flavor to make itself known. More importantly, although fully cooked, the onoin had an understated, but unmistakable, crunch. On to the main event. The first, and every other, bite was a burst of flavor, The amptly tangy bbq sauce, atop moist and savory pulled pork, was well complemented by the crisp, cool, cole slaw on top. The dog itself was somewhat sausage like in favor, and an understated, yet clearly present snap (again, as I have said before, snap is of paramount importance to the hot dog connisuer). The meal, sans soft drink, rang in at under fourteen bucks, before tip. Well worth the price; and considering there was one guy, who strongly resembled the cartoon chef painted on the front window, that was running the show alone, it was well worth the tip, as well. read more

Chef's Dog House in Newington is one of my favorite CT hot dog places because of their tremendous flexibility with condiment choices. To be clear, their hot dogs are good quality, Chef's grills them to perfection and they serve the dogs on great buns grilled in butter. But it's the huge selection of free condiments that distinguishes Chef's from other top CT places. Today for lunch, I ordered two plain hot dogs, a small chili and a small side of shredded cheddar cheese. Pre-Covid, you could go to the condiment bar and Chef's probably had more than 20 different options including multiple types of relish, peppers, onions, kraut, chipotle mayo, and various flavored mustards and ketchups. Now, those toppings are available in small plastic containers with lids, which is a reasonable adaptation. If you have go to hot dog toppings, you may not need 20 plus toppings to choose from. Me, I'm usually stuck on about five different specialty dogs. At Chef's, you can cut the hot dogs in smaller pieces and have a few different types of dogs. Today, I created the following mini dogs out of two standard size dogs: an onion mustard and kraut dog; a chili and shredded cheese dog; a ketchup and sweet relish dog; a chipotle mayo and pickle relish dog; a mustard relish dog; and a dog with chili and mustard. Do I need 6 different mini dogs instead of two regular size ones? No. Do I want it? YES! Chef's is Five Stars for its hot dogs. Very friggen impressive food in the middle of a random strip mall behind a 7-11. First things first, this place is a dive. It ain't pretty, and I will not try to pretend that it is pretty. What they do well is they make awesome burgers and dogs, and they do that very, Very well. The owner is incredibly passionate, always greets guests with a smile and checks in with his diners to make sure everything coming out is good. He shows care for his customers, which is always a welcome sight. The portions are generous, the food is delicious and not healthy for you at all. This is the type of place you go to where you don't really care about the diet and want a very well executed burger or hotdog. That being typed, this is also the type of place that doesn't want you to go home hungry. We actually came back to this location after having their hot dogs and saw them deliver a plate of burgers to the next table. We were full after the hot dogs, so we had to come back the next day to try the burgers as well. The burgers were cooked to the right temp, filled to the gills with toppings and tasted amazing. it's very unassuming, but also very tasty. Near perfect but admittedly I wish it had a little more snap. The bun: buttered and toasted. Perfect. Toppings: The pulled pork was seasoned perfect and plentiful. This is one of the hidden gems of the area. Old school greasy spoon feel with very reasonable prices . The service is prompt and the guys behind the counter are very nice and accommodating! The food is packed with that nice griddle flavor, I have tried 2 different burgers and they are big and packed with flavor, but make sure you get more than a few napkins because the toppings are piled high and your hands will be messy! Wasn't sure what to expect but wow... these dogs are damn good. I had the pastrami and Swiss dog. The dog itself was full of flavor and was topped generously with yummy pastrami. Pops had a chili cheese dog and kept going on about how good the dog was and chili as well. When asked if he'd return, I don't think I even finished the sentence before he proclaimed Yes !! We haven't eaten here in 5 years, but happened to be in the neighborhood recently and stopped in for a hot dog. Orders are taken at the counter and delivered to your table when ready. Spacing conforms to covid-19 guidelines and everyone was wearing a mask. The hot dogs and rolls were cooked to perfection and tasted great. What a great find! My husband and I recently moved just a few streets away from Chef's Dog House and after driving by countless times and seeing all the hype on yelp we had to check this place out! The menu has something for anyone! It honestly took me several minutes to end up deciding what I wanted because everything seemed amazing! My husband and I went with their junkyard dog and chili cheese dog. Overall an all around great dog! The buns were toasted and buttered (such a nice touch!) and the toppings were heaping. The dogs themselves were awesome as well! The service was extremely friendly and welcoming! They even noticed how quickly we devoured our food and noticed how much we enjoyed it. My Thursday started off with a craving for a good hotdog. After some research, we found this gem tucked away behind 7-Eleven. We were blown away by how good, flavorful, and filling the food was. It was like enjoying cook out food at that one relative's house that you know cooks the best in the family! It was like sitting in the summer shade with good people and a tall glass of sweet tea. This is a small mom and pop hot dog store. As the name suggests the most important thing here is hot dog. And you should try the hot dog here for sure. I went for prairie dog and it was good. It was a hot dog topped with frizzled potato. Godzilla burger was huge. May be it was 7 inches tall. Eating it is a messy affair. But was good. Beef and barley soup was good. For dessert I went for Tiramisu cake. They asked if I wanted it warmed, and I said yes (didn't know what it meant). Tiramisu came liquidy. I have no idea how to still call it Tiramisu. This place makes burgers as interesting as yours but doubles down with awesome dogs and the most amazing condiment bar I've ever heard of. At least 4 different types of mayo! Garlic, Chipotle, Jalapeno, Regular, various mustards etc. This place is tiny and amazing! I'm going to be updating this as I return often to work my way through the menu. Today's selections were the junkyard dog (onions, chili bacon-wrapped dog on a grilled bun) and the pastrami and swiss dog (bacon-wrapped dog piled high with pastrami and melted swiss on a grilled bun). One of the guys had a marsala burger (mushrooms, marsala sauce and cheese on a burger) and another had something called a godzilla burger (not sure what wasn't on that one!). I also tried cauliflower soup which was awesome. The service was the most friendly I've ever experienced. What a great group of kids work here. The place is flat out perfect in every way except that it is in an odd location. From the outside you would have no idea how special the inside is. This one is definitely worth making a special trip. I can't believe that I didn't write a review, the first time we visited. We discovered Chef's through Groupon...who doesn't love a deal?! On our first trip, I had the Southerner (a special that day)...a hotdog buried under a delicious pile of pulled pork. This trip I tried the Prairie Dog. This hot dog was was wrapped in bacon, topped with onion dip and covered with Frizzled Potato (fried strings)! I was a little worried about the dip, but it really worked. My husband stayed true to his first pick, the Red Devil. A Red Hot smothered in a red pepper cream cheese and topped with fried jalapeños. For his second dog, he tried the Junkyard Dog. The bacon was a little underdone and the onions were grilled, so he'll be sticking to the Devil next time. If you're more of a traditionalist, you can get a plain dog and hit the condiment bar. I still wanted a hot dog and remembered this Chefs Dog House. Let's say I am no longer disappointed. Got a hot dog with cheese and grilled onions and an order of cheese fries. It was just over $8. There were enough fries to feed three people and they were generous with the cheese sauce. Just awesome. The hot dog was perfect as well. Bun was perfect. Hot dog was tasty. Onions grilled perfect and who doesn't love that Melty cheese? They also serve breakfast. My boyfriend was disappointed he missed the hot dog, so we ended up going for breakfast before work a couple days later. We split a bacon egg and cheese sandwich and home fries. Best home fries ever, a little buttery but really just added to the goodness. Bacon on the sandwich was nice and crispy, not soggy or chewy like you get from fast food places. Another great feature is their condiment bar. Highly recommend the jalapeño ketchup. And if hot sauce is your thing, they have many to choose from. The staff both at night and in the morning were very friendly and helpful. They have a few tables set up outside to dine at. Overall a great place and I will be back for sure. I had the Patty melt which is; ground beef, "triple cheese," thousand island dressing, grilled onions on rye bread. I was crispy on the outside and juicy and good on the inside. I liked that they asked how I wanted my burger cooked; medium rare. I didn't really need the triple cheese since it's already pretty slathered with juiciness but hey, this wasn't a health-food-type of meal. They have an expanded toppings bar with pickles, pickled carrots, pickled cauliflower, spicy mustard, yellow mustard, barbecue sauce and a hot of hot sauce bottles to choose from. I'm a big fan of Chef's, but it's not because of the hot dogs. Don't get me wrong, they have a great hot dog, and they have some of the best condiments around to put on a dog. But the real treat at Chef's is their other sandwiches. First time I visited, I had the Reuben burger special - pastrami, sauerkraut and swiss on the burger, all on toasted rye bread. Amazing. Probably a quarter pound burger, definitely made from fresh ground beef. A real winner. But my wife really scored when she ordered the tuna melt special. This was no ordinary tuna melt. On top of an excellent tuna salad, it had tomatoes and potato "frizzles" (think potato strings, but even thinner). The frizzles really made the sandwich - I order them on everything now. The other big winner is the Chef's breakfast sandwiches. He does up two fried eggs on a roll with your choice of meat - typical breakfast fare like sausage and bacon. 1.) Introduction: I was back in the area and figured, "since I had hot dogs at another place in Newington, I might as well try 'A Chef's Dog House' for comparison.'" 2.) Aesthetics: I don't know, but to me this place reminds almost like a Doogie's "Home of the 2 foot long Hot Dog" (Berlin Turnpike) except its bigger and has a topping bar/station in the middle of the restaurant. I put pickles (which were nice and long), Jalapeño Ketchup, chopped raw onions and Fire House sauce. I thought the Fire House sauce had a little more kick than the jalapeño ketchup (probably because the jalapeño ketchup was mixed with water and more ketchup). I thought it was very tasty. b.) The Junkyard: I ordered the "Junkyard Dog" for $3.85. It was a hot dog wrapped in bacon, topped with chili, nacho cheese and grilled onions. I thought this was okay. c.) Thoughts: All the hot dogs here were beef, except the Red Hot Dog, which were from Hummel Brothers Co. (which is a mix of pork and beef? Not sure). I do like pork hot dogs, though! 4.) Service: Nice, friendly, helpful. One of the females working there stated that she would serve it to me, so when it was cooked she brought it to my table. There's not a whole lot that Chef's won't put on a hot dog, they'll put anything on there from pastrami, to BBQ & Coleslaw, to Bacon, to just about anything under the sun. If you even feel "limited" by the amazing options on the menu, they even have "Connecticut's largest condiment bar", so you can add tons and tons of extra, and I indeed did add those tons and tons of extras. In the end I went for both the pastrami & swiss hot dog and the Junkyard dog. I then supplemented both with jalepeno ketchup and banana peppers. It was delicious and my stomach will never forgive me. Although the namesake would suggest otherwise, Chef's does have a surprisingly large selection of other items as well. Chef's has a wide selection of burgers, sandwiches, soups and side dishes. They even have a few salads...but what kind've fun would that be in a hot dog place? The sides are pretty standard fare for this kind've place: fries, chips, onion rings, chili and coleslaw. The onion rings were great and huge. The portions are very generous too. The place was immaculate and the wait staff were incredibly friendly. They all had a happy and bubbly attitude. The food was delivered quickly and the drink options were very diverse. Overall Chef's is a must visit for everyone in Connecticut. Last month I was on a hotdog binge- or rather I was broke-poor-hungry and found one of the coolest hotdog joints around. Just a little warning I love food that comes in flavors or food with many ingredients. I never realized that you can put fresh tomatoes and 3 different hot peppers on a hot dog until I visited Chef's Dog. I walked into the place in such a miserable state. My arm was hurting that afternoon and left feeling so relieved that the staff was nice about me spilling some toppings. I couldn't lift my arms- I was disabled that afternoon. My arm had limited range of motion, I felt helpless because I couldn't get my arms to do what I wanted. The staff didn't gawk or stare at me. The girl working the front end was very friendly. Based on some fellow Yelper's referrals, Sergio and I headed to Chef's Dog House, and found it easily, and it was nice and quiet. The girl behind the counter was super friendly when we walked in, and told us to take our time, and ask if we had questions. The menu was simple, dogs, burgers, salads and sandwiches. We opted for a Hot Dog Sampler Platter. We went for a plain all-beef dog, the pastrami and swiss, the "Southern Dog", which was BBQ pulled pork with cole slaw, and the special dog of the day, the "Italian Dog", which was grilled onions and peppers with fried potatoes. Oh yeah, and we had an order of potato wedges. Oh, and two birch beers. BIRCH BEERS!!! (An entire star was given just on the fact that they had birch beer). Each burger was obviously hand-crafted with care, they were not all slopped and piled together. The buns were perfectly buttered and toasted, and there was just enough toppings on each one without it being ridiculous. They were all so good that we polished off the entire tray. I would give 4.5 if I could but I can't give the full nod of 5 stars. During a closed dress rehearsal for dance recital we had time to kill so we ended up here. Very nondescript looking place buoyed in the back of the plaza if it weren't for the street signage you could drive by and never know this place exists. Chef's hot dogs don't have that great juicy snap of a Hummels hot dog, nor are they made from that same crappy meat as a Capital Lunch hot dog. Chef's hot dogs fall somewhere in between those two on the universal hot dog spectrum. What's very cool is the toppings self-serve counter. I had been to Chef's several times prob 7+ years ago. Always great, prompt service, and very personable. I have to imagine they are still very friendly. And I can attest the service is still quick. But (it pains me to post this) I recently had a delivery in which each hot dog for our group (8 in total) was unbelievably salty. It tasted like the buns were flat-grilled in either salted butter or butter and dipped into salt, which I was not used to. It seems like it was only one side with this trait but in everyone's hot dog. Maybe it was a one time thing, and he toppings and hot dog themselves were fine, but the level of salt on these pretty much made them as a whole unable to eat. read more
