    Complimentary sesame mochi balls!
    Rebecca T.

This place makes hands down the best Japanese curry on island. I've tried a couple, authentic ones, cheap ones, fancy ones, the flavor here is the best! Yeah you wouldn't think a ramen spot got great curry right!? Especially the staff don't look like Japanese? But hey, if it's good food, great service and friendly prices, I'm there. We would drive to Kalihi just for this. Why their curry? Flavorful, great consistency, carrots and onions inside, got a bit of kick to it, perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness. Also their oysters are well fried with a good crunch. Just so glad they got the oyster option! (5 pieces for their oyster curry). Then they got their good tonkotsu going for their ramen. I usually prefer the black garlic oil, but their plain tonkotsu is bomb. Rich and flavorful with noodles with good texture. Great prices because a combo with chicken katsu curry comes with a bowl of ramen and 4 pieces of gyoza for $18.50. On top of that they gave us complimentary delicious fried sesame mochi balls. The place has enough tables to not have people waiting outside, although I do think they deserve to have a waitlist. It's clean, simple and comfortable to dine in. This place deserves 7 stars I think. I hope they do well for a long time because I wanna keep coming back. It's so rare nowadays to have restaurants like this! Mahalo for being a gem to the community! I love Chef's Ramen. See you next week lol.

Their tonkatsu broth is sooooo good! Very rich it reminds me of ramen from Japan: like the Ichiran ramen + complimentary sesame balls, sooooo good! My first time trying it! + service was good, server came to check on us from time to time & food didn't take that long I will definitely come here again!

I really enjoyed dining here for lunch! The food was all very delicious and flavorful. We got the combos and there was so much food. The staff is very nice and attentive. The restaurant is very comfy and plenty of room to move around in. The gyoza were very juicy. The tonkatsu broth for the ramen was very flavorful! The fried rice was also very good! Everything was seasoned just right. We also got the mochiko chicken curry, and the mochiko was fried very nicely and was very juicy and crunchy! They also gave us some fried sesame balls as a mini dessert and it was super hot and not that sweet. A nice ending to our meal.

So far the best ramen in Honolulu. We had to date. The broth is nice and flavorful. The noodles are fresh and tender.

Delicious food, Big portions [Honolulu HI] We dined here on our last full day in Oʻahu. Inside is quaint in a casual setting with a small dining room. The restaurant is a table service so we placed our order with the sole employee (maybe owner). I ordered the Butter Garlic Salmon Rice which was delicious. It was described as spicy on the menu but I requested it to be no spice at all. When I took a bite it still had a bit of spicy kick to it but it's okay, I could handle it. The salmon was a generous size! Hubby chose Spam Katsu Curry Combo and our other company ordered each the Tonkotsu Ramen Combo and the Vegetable Ramen Combo that came with gyoza and charsiu fried rice. Towards the end of our dinner we were given a complimentary serving of Jian Dui (Sesame Seed Balls). So kind! So yummy! Chef's Ramen was the suggestion of Nadine C and we met her here for dinner at 5:00p (we had just came from the Battleship Missouri at the Pearl Harbor). Irene M joined us a bit later... the restaurant is located in an unassuming strip mall in City Square (Young's Fish Market on the corner, UBAE just across). The next time we're back in Oʻahu we're heading here! Thank you, Nadine! Review #3588

Better late than never... Ramen for dinner sounds exactly what I needed after returning from a trip and being badly jet lagged a bowl of hot soup is a comfort that I'm so ready for. Chef's Ramen is located in City Square and is a small and cozy place with few seating provided though I've seen many order take out and ordering is by QR Code only so honestly I don't remember exactly what I ordered knowing it's kinda a Veggie Tonkotsu ramen set that comes with four pieces of huge gyoza that was so yuuuuuuummy (I'm a huge gyoza lover) and side of fried rice which I knew I wasn't gonna even touch thinking probably would be perfect for later lol! The service is very nice and friendly even giving us Jin Dui the sesame balls at the end of our meal which was a perfect small bite and a lovely touch that I honestly didn't expect. The vibe is nice and relaxing as the restaurant is nice and clean with the lady constantly refilling our water is very attentive and see why many do come and love it here as the comfort is more than just their food. Thank you!

Dinner in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii... We all had never been to Chef's Ramen at City Square, so we decided to meet there. We read reviews by Bruddah Fran, Paul, Gabriel, Lyla, and Daniel... our trusted friends. It seemed like a good place because of the free shared parking, reasonable prices, generous portions, and convenient location. Inside, the restaurant was clean and the service was efficient. We scanned the QR code for the menu. There was a slight hiccup when the server returned to the table and announced that there was no loco moco Ramen available... and she returned again to clarify the spam katsu order... no spicy, please. I got the Tonkotsu Ramen set which included 4 pieces of yummy gyoza and a bowl of fried rice. I wasn't able to finish the rice. The server offered a takeout bo... yes, please! This was quite a pleasant experience! Thanks for letting us stay and chat! I want to return and have my mom eat the salmon!

Crave is on! There is no other ramen place like Chef's as the location is so convenient for us. Had to order my fave Black Garlic Parmesan and hubby trying the Miso Tonkatsu (both had so much flavor) we also had to have starters with Gyoza (homemade) and ending with sweet sesame balls (can't beat it from anywhere). Always so pleasantly friendly service and the vibe is so welcoming.

Arrived a few minutes after opening, greeted & seated quickly. Scanned QR code for menu as water w/lemon served. Tan tan ramen w/mochijo chicken was portioned great. Rich, hearty broth w/bits of garlic. Super flavorful. Ajitama egg made perfectly, unlike some other places that call it Ajitama & turn out to be a regular hard boiled one. Mochiko chicken was moist & plentiful. Gyoza wasn't piping hot so easy to eat right away. Was given a complimentary order of gin dui for dessert. Perfectly bite sized! Prices are great, restaurant is clean, staff is friendly. Seating for about 24 total. 4 tables for 4 & 4 tables for 2. Also saw 2 high chairs available. Located right next door to Sugoi's and kitty corner from Kamehameha Bakery.

Open Sunday night, BYOB and they accommodated our party of 10 people. First time here. Lots of parking, and it's a quaint ramen restaurant (good thing we made reservations). Love the menu options - nice variety for our big group. We enjoyed all the dishes. Complimentary mini Jin Dui was a nice touch to end our filling meal... freshly made and hot. Would return.

This unassuming restaurant tucked away in this little strip mall is a gem. I was so surprised by the taste and deliciousness of the food selections. Prices are reasonable and the dining area is clean as well and lady/owner was very nice! We ordered two different ramen dishes. We upsized the Tonkatsu ramen to A which includes a gyoza and fried rice. Upsizing to A is highly recommended! The char siu fried rice is tasty and can really be a small meal itself. Definitely has the wok smell in every bite. The gyoza is handmade with thinner skin and flavorful juicy center. The tonkatsu ramen may look watery but it is soo good. Noodles are Al dente. Broth has nice creaminess. Egg is seasoned with a slightly soft texture. Choy sum is the perfect touch. Truffle ramen is decadent with fresh cheese, garlic truffle oil and creamy milk broth. On a rainy Sunday afternoon this dish hit the spot. The lady brought dessert at the end. Yummy fried Jin doi with red bean in center. Sooooo good!!! Perfect lunch on a cloudy day!

I wanted to eat ramen, So I searched through Yelp.I found a review from Paul C. which convinced me to try Chef's Ramen. I ordered the Tan Tan Ramen combo. This came with a mini ramen, mini charsiu fried rice, and four pieces of gyoza. The noodles and broth had good texture, and taste. The slice of pork was tender, but lack flavor. The fried rice had a taste which I thought was ok. My wife said her chicken Katsu Curry was average. We were given mochi balls for free. That one lady working there was courteous., and attentive. Give her five stars. Also she brought us take out containers which was the perfect match for our leftovers. Enjoy

Admittedly I had fairly low expectations of this place while looking through reviews/photos, but overall I was pleasantly surprised by the ramen! The shop is on the smaller-side with maybe less than 10 tables but there was no wait so we got a seated immediately. Service was very friendly and they were attentive during our meal. They even gave us some red bean sesame balls for dessert for free! The Tan Tan Char Siu Ramen had a great flavor to it and the noodles were good as well. The broth was what I skeptical of (as that's the signifier of good/bad ramen) and when I tasted, I was definitely surprised as it had a pretty great taste and a deeper flavor than I was expecting. The ajitama egg wasn't as runny as I'd like but it was still okay. This is one of those places where I wouldn't mind going back to since the ramen does hold it's ground, but I won't be the first one to recommend it.

Parking is still small and can fill up when it's busy (you also aren't allowed to park in the Church parking lot) If you haven't eaten here before, I would suggest looking on their website at the waitlist to see how many people are on there prior to going there as they can get really busy. Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

The broth was savory and comforting, the meat was tender, and the toppings added a nice balance of texture and freshness. Definitely a satisfying bowl if you want something bold, warm, and filling. Great spot for ramen, drinks, and a relaxed meal downtown.

I would have said 4.5 had I not noticed the large dead b52 on the floor near my seat when we were seated. Aside from that, the place looked clean. I mean.. we are in Chinatown. So.. We had the shrimp gyoza, lobster shumai, crispy duck tacos, smoked octopus, and wagyu steak cubes. Appy dishes come with 3 pieces each. The crispy duck tacos were my fave. Very flavorful. Loved the textures in that one. Lobster shumai and shrimp gyoza were good. The octopus was tender and flavorful. My Samurai X drink was yummy. My brother had the Midorikawa that was refreshing. I would come again.

The Good: * One of my favorite dishes is the cold chicken noodles with dipping sauce. It comes on a bed of freshly cut cucumbers & noodles if you wish. Literally is such a clean delicious dish. No one else makes this kind of dish. I highly suggest if you don't wanna eat ramen that day, but you want a good stack of noodles and protein. * The tan tan ramen is the basic good stuff that never gets old. * I have also tried the sour/spicy clear brother ramen and that was real interesting and good, but I gotta be in the mood for that one The Bad: * sometimes it's so busy! gotta wait for a table The Weird: * the menu is getting larrrrrrrrrge, screaming that the restaurant is run by Chinese really lol

Food was decent and Portion was reasonable. What I didn't like was how they kept coming up to our table and trying to take away our plate and bowl as if we were finish. Not once but 3x. Seriously, I still had ramen and char sui in my bowl. Let me finish!!!. It felt like they they were trying to rush us and mind you it wasn't busy at all. To add to it, when did they start automatically adding 15% gratitude for a party of 2. I get if its a big party but for 2 or even if by yourself is unbelievable. Save yourself the trouble and eat at another ramen spot. There is a few good ones around ala moana area or in the food court as well.

A modern Japanese-style noodle house meets European-style brasserie? Consider me a fan of…read moreTsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie, especially with the affordable dinner set meals that are offered on a daily basis. With this much food, your entire party could share a full meal and still be satisfied with the diverse menu options that are offered. Located on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, along the busy corridor of Kalakaua Avenue, this is the second stateside location of TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie after successfully opening in the heart of New York City. Originally founded in Osaka, Japan, TsuruTonTan specializes in authentic handmade udon, where the noodles themselves take center stage. Their goal is to have each bowl thoughtfully crafted and topped with a wide variety of ingredients, from aromatic bonito flakes and savory kombu kelp to locally sourced vegetables and meats, all carefully selected to complement the restaurant's high-quality noodles. The name TsuruTonTan draws inspiration from the sounds associated with the art of udon making. In Japanese, "Tsuru" represents the sound of slurping noodles, "Ton" evokes the kneading and shaping of the dough, and "Tan" signifies the cutting of the noodles. Together, these three sounds embody the spirit of TsuruTonTan and its dedication to the craft of handmade udon. What drew me into this location, with plenty of options surrounding them was TsuruTonTan's Special Dinner Set, which for a reasonable $38 diners would received no fewer than six menu items starting with their house salad which was fresh arugula lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and a vinaigrette and a small sampling of their Edamame. You also get a choice of Appetizer between chicken, tofu and shrimp tempura, of which I selected their Chicken Karaage. Then for your entrée, diners have the choice between six udons to select from, from your traditional soup based udons to one that particularly stood out to me, their Truffle Cream Udon, so I knew that I was going to order this menu item. As if that wasn't enough food, diners get to order one sushi roll that they handcraft here at TsuruTonTan and I selected their Sunfire Roll, which had a shrimp tempura mixed with cucumber, avocado and topped with spicy tuna. And then, for your final course, diners get to enjoy a scoop of ice cream, of which on this day our only option was rainbow sherbet. The first four courses to be presented to my table were the salad, edamame, Chicken Karaage, and my four slices of the Sunfire Roll. These four entrées probably would have been enough food and I would have been satisfied with my meal overall. The Chicken Karaage were five deep-fried nugget pieces served with lemon and piping hot upon served and the Sunfire Roll was a nice combination of sushi roll flavors. Then came my Truffle Cream Udon, which was topped with balls of crab meat, sliced truffle mushrooms, and shaved parmesan cheese. Creamy and cheesy goodness, this entrée was a hearty and heavy dish that combined the flavors of both Japan and Italy thanks to the heartiness of the udon noodles. The ice cream scoop was a nice touch to end what was already a filling meal. I really enjoyed my meal at TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie with so many menu items to choose from it seems overwhelming. Thankfully they have a number of popular and recommended menu items that any visitor looking for a good meal can choose from. The $38 dinner set created specifically for Hawaii diners, which includes a spicy udon soup and a garlic shrimp rice dish, has already piqued my interest and given me a reason to return. And return I will, as long as the service, prices, and food remain as consistently strong as they are at TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie. Offering elevated comfort food that seamlessly bridges cultures and culinary traditions, it stands out as a unique dining destination well worth revisiting.
