A little pricey but absolutely delicious katsu curry. Filling portions, super juicy and thick katsu. Service is fast and there is seating in the area if you want to get out of the office for a while.

I never thought I'd see Menchanko Tei again -- just under a different name this time! They're located in Fort St. Mall which means parking isn't the greatest. Your best bet is to either find street parking, utilize the nearby parking garages, or park at the post office. They're a take-out business now with tables nearby and the food comes out fairly quick (as long as you beat the lunch rush) Everything is still as yummy as I remembered and at less than $20 a plate, I'd say it's pretty worth it; especially since you could portion it into two meals. The only downside is that with the downtown location comes with downtown hours so they're not open on the weekends

I missed menchanko-tei so much! Was so excited to hear about Sangi. Located in fort st. mall, the parking is pretty expensive. We parked in the harbor court lot a block or so away, which is a bit cheaper. We just beat the lunch rush, and our food came out in about 15 minutes. They're takeout only, with some little tables just outside. We got a Katsu plate+mini ramen and the Karaage curry plate, to kinda try a bit of everything. Just like I recall, the food was delicious. Curry was pretty standard Japanese curry, but the katsu and chicken were fresh out the fryer and super crispy outside and tender inside. I like a slightly fluffier breading on the katsu but it was still quite good, and the delicious house made katsu sauce is soo good. They even have the same oniony salad dressing they had at menchankotei and they use a good quality Japanese rice too. It was $57 after tax and tip for our two plates and a drink, but we had a good amount leftover that I had for dinner. It was still good even reheated, just less crispy. Worth a little splurge imo. The only thing I dislike is the odd hours, otherwise I'd definitely come for dinner more often.

Food quality: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Cleanliness: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Don't skip on: The Tonkatsu Trying out Tonkatsu Sangi for the first time and it did not disappoint! Wow!! The tonkatsu just melted in my mouth when I took the first bite and it was an amazing experience! The crust was so crispy and perfectly fried and the pork was moist and perfectly cooked. This order came with mini Tan Tan ramen and it was so rich and flavorful! The ladies working at this shop were so sweet and welcoming. They were helpful with the questions I had and were so kind. I would be interested to try the other time - the tenderloin, which is more lean. Also would be interested to try the other ramen there as well! Just need to find a way to get a bigger stomach

Tonkatsu Sangi is located in Pioneer Plaza. It's a takeout style restaurant but if you want to dine there then there are tables outside but they are often occupied during the lunch rush. Sometimes you'll get lucky but if not, taking it back to dine comfortably in your office also works. Most of their customers are people whom live/work in downtown as they can easily walk over but if you don't live/work in downtown and want to give them a try, there is street metered parking around the area. Originally, we wanted to order 2 Nanban Plates but they were in the middle of frying their next batch of chicken and they didn't have enough for 2 full plates. The cashier stated they have enough for 1 full Nanban Plate and 1 Nanban + Mini if we didn't want to wait for the next batch of fried chicken to be ready. We took her recommendation. I gave my guest the Nanban Plate and I ordered the Nanban + Mini-Shoyu. Our order only took a few minutes to be ready as they were already frying that batch when we ordered. We got lucky and scored the table right outside their door. The Nanban Plate comes with Miso Soup and the Nanban + Mini-Shoyu came with a small ramen that included 1 piece of seared char siu. Both came with one scoop of rice and some shredded cabbage. Nothing beats fried chicken fresh out of the fryer. The pieces were tender, moist and flavorful. My ramen was decent and a nice side given the circumstances. Worth checking out if you live/work in the downtown area but not sure if they are destination worthy due to the parking situation.

I excited to try this place when I found out from my friend that this was the same owner of the former Menchako-tei! The menu was on a smaller scale and I wanted to try their Tonkatsu or the Chicken Nanban. I missed their old restaurant and menu when they were in the Keeaumoku area. Since I don't work in the area and would have to find parking, my coworker agreed to come with me to pick up lunch. We called in the order, but our order wasn't quite ready when we stopped by. I drove and waited on the side on Merchant Street while my friend picked up our food. Tonkatsu Sangi is located in the Pioneer Plaza building with all the other restaurants. The Tonkatsu curry was really moist and juicy inside and crunchy on the outside. It wasn't dry liked some places. I really enjoyed each thick piece with the curry! So nice that they re-opened again under a new name, although I really missed dining at Menchako-tei! Next would like to try their Nanban chicken. I liked theirs because of the non-mayo sauce. I can't wait to go back!

So we had to stop by and try this place to have Japanese katsu curry Tomoko provided great service and recommendations. We will be back again I got the following items Katsu curry and mini ramen

I ordered the combo mini ramen & tenderloin katsu and paid about $20. Service was pretty quick. I only waited about 10 min for my food & they cook everything to order. The tenderloin katsu was so soft and moist. It came with rice & cabbage salad. And the ramen noodles were cooked perfect with a rich broth. I work downtown so I will definitely be back.

Another hidden gem located in Pioneer Plaza, Tonkatsu Sangi is a quanit little shop with little customer space. Not much more than counter space for ordering and a small fridge holding drinks. I ordered a regular katsu curry plate and got a can of coke for a grand total of 21.99. they make the food to order so expect a slight wait. I ended up waiting about 7 minutes. There are tables and chairs all over the hallways of pioneer plaza so I sat while I waited. Upon first glance of my food, the katsu looked darker than I anticipated and I feared it was burnt and would be dry. Happy to report that it was not at all. The katsu was crispy and delicious on the outside while still being super moist inside. The curry sauce was thankfully not runny like so many other places, but nice and thick and had really excellent flavor. All in all this place is great. Would I come here again? Yeah sure..on paydays when I have $20 to spend on delicious food. Pro tip. Get here early. The lines get rather long and they sell out occasionally.

They give a lot more shiru...but I like my ramen dry-ish.

Headed down to Pioneer Plaza from top of Fort Street to try this place. I mainly wanted ramen cuz I was cold...and nanban b/c I could smell fried chicken in the office. Out of Nanban...okay, tonkatsu then. Tonkatsu is delish. Panko very light and almost like you can taste each individual piece of panko rather than it being heavy and more like a coating. I don't like katsu sauce anyways, but the dressing was delish so I did a little dipping in that instead. Only problem was that 1 piece was half fat and a few pieces were still bloody. I can just reheat later. Ramen was okay. It did the trick and warmed me up. But nothing extraordinary. Oh Char siu was soft. Tons of food...didn't realize I still got rice when I got the ramen. Love the super fine cabbage. Overall really good. Good like Japan? I dunno b/c still never been. But in the meantime, I'll be back on cooler days since that can be a hot walk during lunch.

    Tara L.

One of a kind place in downtown. Seriously no other place to get real japanese tonkatsu. Parking is difficult unless you work nearby. Otherwise you have to find meter stalls and walk. Or park in a garage and pay. Takes a little bit since food is prepared to order. Tonkatsu was good. Light and crunchy breading. Tender meat. Not super fatty. Katsu sauce was not my fave though. It was a bit on the sweet side with a very light flavor. Will def hit the spot though if youre craving katsu in downtown Theyre located in pioneers plaza food court on the ground floor. Hopefully they last since this is the 3rd or 4th business thats been in that spot in the last 10 years.

Went back to get my regular tonkatsu plate! It's such a treat every time I go back when I'm craving tonkatsu. It takes roughly 10-15min wait and it's worth the wait it tastes great! :) Regular tonkatsu came with miso soup.

But personally, I do not like all of the upcharges here. They want a tip for the waitstaff that you add, but a separate tip for the kitchen that they add, plus a fee for the credit card, that is three separate extra charges, just roll some of that into the pricing so that people know what to expect when they dine here, then just offer a discount for cash only and deduct it from those people. They also had upcharges for sauces and green onions which is ridiculous. What restaurant charges extra for dipping sauce for a dish that typically comes with a dipping sauce, never in my life has that happened and that makes additional extra charges. We came during happy hour, which was great so I ordered a bunch of food to try. I had a couple drinks, the mai tai and a blue Hawaiian type drink. They were good and a good price. We had the happy hour fries, they were nothing special. Some other Japanese places near us had some amazing tempura fries, but these were rather plain. The cucumber salad was delightful and I really enjoyed the tempura shrimp sushi. For dinner one child ordered the gyoza and they were out of the vegan so she had to get the pork. They were very tasty but the waiter offered the ponzu sauce and green onions but did not indicate there was an upcharge. I did ask him about it and he said it was on the menu, but my child was not going to see that and also, I have never in my life had an upcharge for a typical sauce that comes with a dumpling. I had the Tam Tam noodles. Those were amazing, so saucy and a nice amount of spice. I would come back for those, that is a very typical kind of dish I would look for or make at home for myself. The other two ramen were a char sui chicken and a spam, but the broth on those were practically flavorless and super watery making them a very expensive mild soup that lacked flavor. It is a cute place with nice music (although super loud, louder than normal) in a really good spot, but I do not think overall the family would come back. At home, we have a plethora for noodle places for less with better flavor and I bet Waikiki does as well.

Overall, the ramen was very good, but I want to share an important tip about their waiting system so others don't get caught off guard. When your name gets close to the top of the list, do NOT wander away. They will call your name three times, and if you're not standing there, they'll cross your name off immediately. What surprised me was that they start calling names before the current customers have even finished eating or paid their bill. I had made eye contact with the host, pointed to my name and party size, and he acknowledged me. There were still people sitting at the counter eating, and it looked like it would be another 10-15 minutes before seats opened up. I stepped away briefly and came back, only to find my name had already been crossed off the list. The party that was supposedly leaving hadn't even paid yet and was still sitting in their seats. When I explained the situation, the host simply said, "Sorry, your time passed already. I called your name three times." Their sign says they will wait 3 minutes, but in our case it felt more like they called the name three times in quick succession and then removed it. Thankfully, after some discussion, he agreed to seat us anyway. So my advice: once your name is within a couple spots of being called, stay close and pay attention. As for the food, we ordered the Oxtail Ramen (spicy) and the Cashew Pork Ramen. The ramen itself was excellent. The oxtail was tender, although it didn't have a lot of flavor on its own in the soup. They provide a separate bowl with ginger and what appeared to be a ponzu-based sauce, and the intended way to eat it is to remove the oxtail from the soup and dip it into the sauce. That definitely enhanced the flavor. The restaurant is set up with bar-style seating in a half-oval arrangement. Your party will be seated shoulder-to-shoulder, and guests will be sitting directly across from you on the other side of the counter. I'd estimate there are about 25 seats total. Service is efficient, food comes out quickly, and most customers finish and leave fairly fast. For reference, we arrived at 8:38 PM on a Tuesday with 17 people ahead of us. We were seated around 9:15 PM, our food arrived by about 9:30 PM, and we left around 10:00 PM. Overall, this would have been a 5-star experience if not for the confusion with the waiting list. The ramen is absolutely worth trying, but understanding how their queue system works will save you from a potentially frustrating experience.

Order at counter and pick up order when your number is called. I ordered the 3 item combo set, pick ramen, with mini fried rice and gyoza. Decided on the Tan Tan Tonkatsu ramen. The verdict, might not be a good idea to go to a business when they are about to close, the ramen noodles were very overcooked, the fried rice taste old, reheated, bland, the gyoza had a sour spoiled taste from the cabbage. So disappointed. The only thing we enjoyed was the broth! Glad we only got one set to try. Well, not the same Ezogiku we fell in love with 20+ years ago, on University!
