Reluctant to submit this review...I have been to this salon for box braids four times. I was happy with my braids two out of the four times. The first and third time the Sylvia (the shop owner) braided my hair. I loved it, it was neat, painless and it lasted. On the other two occasions another older woman braided my hair, and I was disappointed. I informed Sylvia that I do not like the way that one particular braider does hair; she drags the braids (pulling strands of my hair across parts causing extreme tension), my braids were clunky, knots big and worst of all strands of my real hair came through the braids--it did not last. I told Sylvia that I did not want that individual to do my hair anymore, but somehow she disregarded my wishes and scheduled me with that braider again. I already had my hair taken out and I had to work so I was in no position to leave when I arrived and realized that she would be doing my hair, but I wish I had. I don't even look like I had my hair re-braided. When I reported the issue to Sylvia and reminded her that I previously asked not to be scheduled with this braider she berated me about how my edges are thin and only offered to refund my money after they took out the braids that they installed. I told her forget it, and wished her luck if this is how she plans to run her business going forward. I should have never been sent away from the shop with my hair looking the way it does. Needless to say I will not be back. This is unfortunate because Sylvia and the other braiders are usually pleasant and the Sylvia is very talented with her styles, I always received compliments and I sent referrals when she did my hair. FYI--Sylvia says that she no longer braids and that other braider is the only one who will be in the shop now. I contacted them on short notice. They were able to fit me in. They not only fit me in but were very professional, accommodating, and did a fantastic job on my crochet braids. Fast & efficient! I came across a flyer and business card for Chel's and decided to give them a try. Chel is very pleasant, communicable and accommodating. Got the style that I chose, Chel got me in and out in only 3 hours! THANK YOU!!!!That's the shortest amount of time I've ever spent in a braid shop. Competitive rates & she (Chel) offered snacks and beverages while you're being serviced which is a plus. Great customer service and healthy kettle corn flavored snacks deserves 5+ stars! I made an appointment through styleseat for passion twists yesterday evening. The description for the service just states the client needs to bring their own hair but doesn't state what hair to bring. Minutes after booking she texted me asking what hair I have. I sent over a photo literally within a few minute of her texting me. Crickets the rest of the night. This morning she gets up and texts me I need to cancel my appointment until I get some hair off Amazon. I have been charged by styleseat a booking fee already. If I cancel I will be charged half the fee due to same day cancellation. I inform her of this, ask for a refund and for her to cancel my appointment. I have been visiting this shop for two years now, and I'm continuously impressed with their work! I have had box braids, Senegalese twists, and most recently curly crochet braids and I walk out happy and satisfied every single time. The shop is clean, the stylists are kind and professional, and they take social distancing seriously. Every surface is cleaned routinely and in between clients, temperature checks are conducted and stylists are only in the shop when they are servicing clients. Response to pretty much being called a liar (or as you said making "inaccurate statements"): I have no need to lie or make up "inaccurate statements". I anticipated this response from you because it seems you've responded this way to all of the other less than stellar Yelp reviews you've received :) Apparently every dissatisfied customer makes "inaccurate statements". I shouldn't have to refuse a discount. As good customer service goes, you should've offered to redo my hair for free since it started falling apart in less than a week! And even if you're still out of the salon, a follow-up would've been nice. OR perhaps refund me if you were unable to do my hair. But, it's a moot point now. You don't have to worry about me any longer. Take care. So, I've never been ghosted by a hairstylist in my life but there's a first time for everything. Long story short, the first time I went to Chel's, Sylvia did my hair (crochet) and it was great. I have very weak and short edges, which Sylvia was delicate with. The next time, although I should've known better, I didn't book exclusively with Sylvia. Some other person did my hair... big mistake. Amongst other issues (her not understanding what color hair to use where and making my hair WAY too full), she attempted to braid every piece of my edge hair (after telling her to be careful with my edges). Even though I was annoyed, I attempted to tip her $5 and she flat out refused the tip! Like I somehow wronged her! That was a FIRST! So, end result was several of my crochet braids slipping and my faux locks falling out the very front row. I contact Sylvia and she says she can try to fix. I go in and she tells me the style won't hold up long but she'll discount my next style. While she's on "vacation", I text her a picture of my hair to show her MORE braids have slipped and I've only had my hair done a week. I simply wanted to date stamp the issue so she knows just how poorly the job was. She never responds. Like a fool, I STILL try to make an appointment with Sylvia two weeks in advance. She texts "when", I tell her a date... she never responds... I follow-up with another text... she then texts me she's sick and if she feels better, she can take my appointment. Mind you, this was for two weeks in advance. I asked for an appointment date of Sept 5... it is now Sept 13. Think she ever followed up with me? NOPE! So, my review in a nutshell: good luck with Chel's Braidery if you have any discontentment about the service. Had an awesome experience. The shop was clean and Chel was friendly. My appointment was at 8 and she was prompt and ready to start me on time. My hair took 3 hours and I was very pleased. She did not attempt to braids every piece of my edges in Andy head was Not sore the next day. Mind you I have short hair and got individual braids There didn't seem to be an issue with over booking and clients were in and out. There was a customer who asked for a Style, but changed her mind and Chel and her other braider did they their best to accommodate her while being very polite and ensuring she was pleased. Updating to 3 stars. I did get a text, like 10 minutes after my initial review, to redo the front. I told her I already took it out and didn't hear anything until the next morning. Then I got multiple texts apologizing and offering another style for free. BUT, I had to come that same day for someone to look at my hair because that was the only day this particular stylist was there. I had already gotten my hair redone by then and I work so I can't just run to the salon at the drop of a hat. I could go on a rant about why I was only given 1 option for 1 person to do my hair and I had to come that very day, but it's fine. She tried and I appreciate it. read more

Nice and clean environment. I would not recommend for children. The braider was accommodating, but she braided my daughter hair too tight. This services for small children are over priced. I had to wash/blow dry my child's hair, and provide the beads. My daughter received a natural style with no hair added, and I was charged $80. My child is now complaining that her head hurts. If you value your Locs, DO NOT come here. I was initially reluctant about stepping out of my comfort zone to go to a different stylist, as mine was booked. Initially, Sylvia seemed responsive and eager to accommodate my appointment. She texted me to tell me she was running late, which I appreciated. She used SO much product on my hair (even used Pump it Up, which I had no idea people even still use this because it's awful for your hair). Her palm rolling was WAY too tight. My displeasure came as soon as I got home and saw that my hair was literally WHITE from all of the product that was used. My roots were buckling which is clear that the retwist was WAY too tight. I am highly disappointed, I have washed my hair over 6 times and had to do a ACV cleanse, still have buildup in my Locs. Do not chance it!! read more

Pro: they are very nice. They have a beautiful shop. They seem to really care about their customers. They seem to be good people. Cons: the quality of the work varies. Some plats look nice some look less than average. The lady didn't pick my son's hair out, part it or prep it in any way. Soon as he sat down she began braiding. Had she picked it out or prepped it maybe his ends wouldn't look horrible. The way the ends are wrapped with the rubber bands look less than desirable. Was quoted for a range of 40-60 and ended up being charged 80. The reasoning for the upcharge is plausible but the quality didn't match the price of this 2 hour service. It hair job has the look of an aunt or grandma that wants to help he family out and offers to braid it, not what I would expect for the price. Update: I contacted them about my issues just now. Will wait to see their response before I making a final judgement. I have rewrote this review 6 times at least in the past 3 hours because I want it to be accurate without being intentionally mean. Not sure what I expect for them to say in response, but we'll see. read more

I contacted this braiding salon to make an appointment and was told that I had to cash app a thirty dollar deposit before I could confirm an appointment. I told the owner that I was not comfortable sending money before service. She advise that she would still hold my appointment but if I cancel, I would no longer be able to make future appointments without a deposit. I said that was fait. I arrived to my appointment 15 minutes early and did they did not get started braiding my hair until 2 hours later. They called someone to come in to braid my hair. My hair turned out fine however, I received no compensation for my time. Months later I contacted this salon to make an appointment and received the same line that I must send a 30 dollar deposit vis cash app. I reminded her of our conversation and she said that will no longer honor that agreement. I told her that I would send her the 30 cash app but I am disappointed in how she does business. She replied back to say she has filled the slot and I no longer can make an appointment. Again bad customer service! I am sorry to say, All statements made above were in no way exaggerated as suggested in the owners reply below. I hope this helps all consumers decide what type of service they want to support. The stylist started on time, made sure I was comfortable throughout the process and was very professional! I will continue coming here. So after receiving less than stellar results from Stella's Hair Braiding and having spent $180 for Senegalese Twists that were sliding out and looking like they had been in for 6 months instead of 2 weeks!! #neveragain. I called around looking for somewhere anywhere anyone who would take me in and several weeks later and came across Chel's Hair Braiding! I was in by 7:30 (kind of late for some box twists) but she was super kind and extra accommodating and for that I will definitely be a repeat customer! I was out and done a little after 11:pm! They did an amazing job for which I received many compliments! 3 months later the braids still look amazing and I am still receiving plenty of compliments! I appreciate her accommodating me on such short notice nd doing an awesome job! The shop was clean! Nice and quiet (with the exception of the noise coming from next door at the Half Note. But I am ready to go back and get my hair redone. Her shop has taken me away from a place I have gone to for the last 15-20 plus years because they (Stella's in Laurel) stopped caring about the quality of service they were providing and was only concerned about moving and making money. Unlike me, my daughter wears braids often. Because I was going on vacation I decided that I needed a low maintenance, durable hair style. BRAIDS! I was initially given an appt with a stylist who referred me to Elise. I am so very happy that she did! Elise was professional, and treated me like I was her most important customer! The stylists were extremely nice. Offered me snacks and great conversation but unfortunately that's not what I'm paying for. I got box braids and it took them 45 minutes to start braiding. They were combing out the braiding hair. It takes my other stylist only 5 minutes to do so. Also, when my hair was done, I noticed some of the braids were not braided properly. The very first braid in the front was looked like a twist and braid combined. Really? The front braid? There were about 15-20 of these in my head (that I could see). The manager came over to re-do. She also told me she would provide a discount as I was a first timer. Long story short, the owner neglected to tell me that the price did not include the hair. She indicated that she would not charge me for the hair because she neglected to inform me. She left the shop without confirming the price with me. When I went to pay I was told $140. Wait...that was the original price quoted...hair should have been free of charge...and where was the discount? I texted her and she came back to the store.
