Visited this past Sunday for a small lunch before heading into work(I know, work on a Sunday? BOO.) I had my suspicions about this place because several years ago- I had a bad eating experience here. I had carne asada and the meat was just so dry. It was not enjoyable to eat nor was it flavorful. I went back a second time a few months later and it was still nothing to rave about. So I just steered clear of this place. But my friend really wanted to try to this place so I decided to give it another go- maybe they improved? I ordered two carne asada and two tripa tacos, with everything. Carne asada was good! Meat was not as dry as I remembered and it had much more to it this time around. I was very much satisfied. With the tripa however - it was alright. Nothing special. It lacked some flavor and sometimes was super hard to bite(since it was crunchy). But it was tolerable nonetheless. Overall- this place redeemed itself in my book. I would give this place another visit in the future, if I got the moola. 1.30$ per taco and that seems like a bit of hike for me and my wallet, just for those itty bitty Palm sized tacos. Been going to chema's since I was a kid. My dad has known him for many many many years & Chema is down to earth. I don't know what those other reviews were saying with bad ratings, they like those fake white tacos then. His salsa is very good, not spicy but builds up as you eat more of it. Here's your only downside-cash only but I always pull some money out of bank or use their atm machine inside there. If I ever want tacos, I always will drive down to Chema's! Word on the street is this is one of the top taco joints in Whittier, so I dropped by during lunch to check it out. Food: I ordered the carne asada and al pastor tacos. Boy, these bad boys were filled to the brim with meat for only $1.30. The carne asada gets four stars for being tender and juicy. As for the al pastor...my first one gets SIX stars. I can't even describe how good it was. The other two unfortunately had lots of burnt pieces of meat. Nevertheless, I shall return in pursuit of the perfect al pastor. This really should be 3.5 stars, because they did so many things right. The tortillas were fresh, hot and pliable, and they tasted good. The meat on both the carne asada and al pastore was cut right, cooked right, and was good quality (no mystery meat/weird gristle). Onion and cilantro were spot on. This place could have been five stars, but ultimately it was lacking in flavor. The salsa was kind of bland and the seasoning on the meat didn't really pop. If I was the kind of guy who liked to slap a jalepeno on the taco, or the radishes, or the pickled veggies, this would probably be a five star taco. But I like them pretty much onions, cilantro, and salsa, and that's it. Using that as your guide, I didn't think these were all that. Good, solid, but not worth seeking out. The ambiance definitely left something to be desired (think: armpit), but since my number one hang is El Chato, standing around eating tacos in a body shop parking lot, that's really not all that important to me when I'm looking for good tacos. read more

They have all the options from the popular carne asada and al pastor to the more exotic lengua (tongue) and cabeza. The simplicity of the shops gives it its greatness. I was introduced to this true Mexican taco stand restaurant years ago. To this day it still stands as one of my favorite taco restaurants. It's a small restaurant that packs a big punch. Tacos are inexpensive but worry not, you still receive great tasting quality in each and every taco. The freshly made red mild salsa is a masterpiece of flavor. The meat is great quality, and it's actually grilled meat, not soggy and boiled asada like 99% of all the other taco joints out there. They are cash only, but 5 tacos will fill you up! Ok, so here's the deal. I live across the street from the new "King Taco" in Ontario. (You say, who F'n cares?) Well, I drive 1 hr to go to Chemas Tacos in Whittier because I have NEVER had a better taco.*** There was a period when Chema wasn't around for a while & the quality went to $h*+, but then he came back like Jesus with a tan & the famous tacos returned. I mention that because some of the reviews describe the tacos as dry or not tasty. It was true during what I call the "Dark Ages", when Chema mysteriously disappeared & so did the quality. Thank GOD it's back. This place is a hole-in-the-wall, so if you are on a 1st date, go to In-N-Out instead. This is like the best Taco-Truck you've ever eaten at & they brought chairs & tables for you. I only order the Carne Asada Tacos & horchata. Worst part about Chemas is the addiction. Hands down, some of the best tacos in LA County, if not southern California. How good are the Tacos? They only sell Taco's. That's it. You want a burrito, move on. Burger, for get about it. Taco's only. The Carne Asada is grilled deep, flavorful and mixed heartily with onion, cilantro, and their spicy salsa. It is a wonderful salsa that is spicy enough for most, not so over the top that any gringo can't handle it, and has totally flavor stay power. I was tasting my taco's hours after wards. Taco's are $1.10, and three taco's makes a filling little meal for under $5. You can't go wrong and I can't recommend these taco's enough. If only they had a spot in Long Beach I would eat here every chance I had. All else is true. Parking is a small lot behind the place, and the turnover for cars is prompt. TACOS FOR A BUCK? I remember when the tacos al carbon fad started hitting in the southland and the days of Taco Bell's dominance slowly grinded to a hault. Mmmmm. Real authentic mexican tacos for a buck. Sure the places were usually dives and sometimes one feared for their life just by being there but the $1 tacos were worth the risk. Slowly the hole-in-the wall authentic joints started to become more popular and more pricey and the $1 tacos were no more. Welcome to Chemas Tacos in Whittier. One of the last $1 taco joints I know of. The tacos are delicious and they each cost $1.05. No more, no less. The building is very run down and gross but it wouldn't feel authentic if it was any other way. On this visit I had the carne asada tacos which were meaty and flavorful. I also tried the al pastor tacos. MMmmm. Their al pastor is like a party going on in my mouth. The flavor is very strong and tasty with the right balance of spice. Don't travel afar to eat them but if you are in the area and looking for some cheap yum yum then give it a try. BTW, the parking sucks. read more

I was first introduced to Chema's Tacos a few years ago by my sister. At first sight this place looks like a complete dump! The outside has chipping paint, the windows have iron bars on them, the tables and bench seats look like they were purchased at a yard sale in the ghetto during the late 70's! Despite the crappy exterior and interior...the tacos are AMAZING! I always order between 8-12 al pastor tacos just for myself. If I'm driving through Pico Rivera I try to swing by. The al pastor tacos here are better than the ones you'd get at King Taco...however the carne asada tacos at King Taco are better than Chema's. In the summer evenings if you drive by Chema's you'll usually see about 20-25 people sitting OUTSIDE of the restaurant because there is limited seating and because there is ZERO air conditioning. It's definitely a sight to see! Also one of things that I look forward to while waiting to receive my tacos is the mattress business across the street. There's always a guy wearing a sombrero that's dancing to try and lure people to the mattress store. I swear that guy is always there and is dancing up a storm for a few hours STRAIGHT! Most of the time I ask for well done, but I didn't ask for it this time and I'm glad I didn't because what I tested was mostly burned pieces.
