I stopped by for lunch yesterday, 2nd time for me. The server was great, he showed real interest in how my day was going. I had a few questions about the menu, lots to choose from. I asked if I could order a carnitas hard taco plate and he took the time to let me know that the carnitas will be a little crispy on the hard taco, I told him that is exactly how my grandmother made them when I was young. I started off with a strawberry margarita on the rocks which got better with every sip. When I got my plate it reminded me again of my grandma Margaritas cooking. Had a great experience here at El Molcajete Loco the other day. My dad was raving about the menudo they sell here and though it was a bit out of the way from where we live, it was definitely worth the drive. I just want to start off by saying that the workers here are really great. They greeted us warmly when we came in and let us sit down where we pleased. They told us what they had on the menu and what dishes are popular. They even let me turn the volume of the TV down because it was so loud which I liked a lot. So many other restaurants get so touchy when it comes to the tv lol. There was one worker in particular, Nati, who really went above and beyond. She was so sweet to us and made sure we constantly had everything we needed. I say it's great that they have workers like this in here because it makes customers feel a lot more welcome. It was some excellent service all around. The menudo was also one of the highlights of our visit here. In my opinion, it's very difficult to get this dish right. They offer it in many places here in SoCal but I would say I have yet to have it someplace where I really liked it. But here it was really great! The broth was great as it was not too smelly or rife with condiments. The tripe was also cooked to perfection. This is one of the most important parts because this is the part that is hard to get right. Sometimes the meat is too hard or too chewy or soft but here it was just right. I was even pleased with the size of the bowl as it was a rather fair portion. Something else I enjoyed about this place was the cleanliness. It was very clean and the tables shined bright as did the floors. Aside from this, there was also running AC in here which is always welcome, especially in this heat we have been having. If I am ever in the mood to have some menudo, I would most definitely come here and have it again and perhaps try some of the other things on the menu. My family and I decided to give this place a try seeing as it had high reviews. The restaurant was clean and beautiful art work displayed. The waiter was attentive, but then again, we were the only ones there upon arrival. The chips, salsa, and fresh waters were delicious. So we were very enthusiastic to eat our food. However, upon the first bite, we were left very disappointed. My wife thought her steak was spoiled base on the taste. None of the food had flavor. My green enchiladas with chicken lacked the chicken and they appeared to be tortillas swimming in flavorless sauce. My wife hardly ate her food, my kids barely ate theirs, and I only ate it because I was that hungry and was optimistic that it would get better with each bite. I unfortunately was very wrong as there was no flavor whatsoever not even in the rice or beans. Even though the waiter asked if everything was ok, we didn't see how anything could be done to improve the chef's inability give a glimpse of flavor to any of the food being served. I paid an unacceptable amount of $87.97 before tip, which was another $10. We weren't shown the breakdown of the food prices when paying, like any other restaurant does. At that point, we just wanted to leave and not turn back. The only reason I even left a tip was for waiters attentiveness and service not so much the food. Normally I'd tip better but the gouging bill seemed like they were already including the tip. It's hard to believe that 2 regular meals, an order of tacos, a kids meal, and 3 drinks warranted such a high bill. The portions were reasonable but again what's the point of quantity when there's no quality. I would not recommend this place ever to anyone. The only way I would ever come back here would be to accept an apology for the lack of food quality, and to get some sort of refund. This may offend somebody but I've tried several Mexican places in the Whittier area, and I've gotten the same disappointment, but not as much as this place. If you want good food, you gotta go somewhere else. I recommend going to Santa Ana. There's plenty of good quality Mexican restaurants. read more
