Beautiful restaurant as far as decorations go and also very clean. The hostesses and the waitress were both very nice and did a great job. The buffet has tons of food choices, we filled our plates with more than we could eat because it all looked so good. Surprisingly; they even have a few non-traditional entrees like Fried Chicken Wings, Fried Catfish, and Fried Okra! These options make the buffet more accessible to kids and picky eaters. We have found the foods we like and enjoy on the Buffet. If you fill your plate too full, it will get cold before you eat it all. So take a small amount and go back for more. I was very bummed to realize they didn't have their Mongolian grill active. I had seen it on their outside and was the main thing I was looking forward to. Also I would have liked to see more Asian sauces for spicing up my selections. There was soy sauce and sriracha at the table. Some chili oil, wasabi, sambal, and the like could have gone a long way in bringing more variety to the dishes selection. My husband and I went in for dinner early 4:30pm on Tuesday. The buffet has always been a favorite of ours and normally very good. On this day everything we got tasted the same and NONE of it was good. The green beans had no flavor. Egg rolls were overcooked and cold as was the Crab Rangoon. The beef dishes were made with the toughest bits of meat I could not cut through. I do not know if they are under new management or ownership but it needs overhauling. I've never experienced food this bad. Ordered combo fried rice to go. In the 5 minutes I drove to the hotel about a half cup of oil or grease leaked out of the container and through the bag and onto my floor mat. Fried rice is supposed to be somewhat dry. Why was this swimming in oil? I did taste it to be sure, and it tasted like charcoal. I don't understand how simple fried rice could go this wrong. A few things have changed since my first review, which really wasn't even that long ago. Firstly, the Mongolian grill is apparently no more. I noticed back in December that the space behind the grill had several boxes, totes, and bags shoved in there, seemingly full of personal items, or things bought at a garage sale, Good Will, or salvaged from somewhere...I don't know but it struck me as really odd and extremely unsanitary to have all that junk so close to the kitchen. Eventually all that stuff got somewhat organized and there are curtains mostly obstructing the view, but now it sort of looks like someone may be living in the Mongolian grill booth area. Noticed two people sitting in there on what appeared to be a cot during my last visit. Even if I'm mistaken and there isn't someone living in there, that doesn't take away from the fact that it still appears that way, and looking like that still calls into question the cleanliness of that area next to the kitchen. The buffet itself has become a little more hit-or-miss over the past several months, with more misses than previously determined, More items sitting around to the point where they'd gotten cold, more empty bins, and more mislabeled items than before. This place really needs a kick in the can before their quality slips even more. Despite all that, it's still the best Chinese restaurant in Mountain Home, but on that note, I think I'm going to reserve my future Asian meals for trips out of town, or cooking it myself at home. Sorry, Chen, but you really need to clean up your act, raise your standards, and stop whatever it is you've got going in right in the middle of your restaurant. read more

We have been eating here for a few years now and I hate to say it, the quality of the food and service isn't what it used to be. They don't put the traditional battered chicken out for sweet and sour chicken, the put out American style chicken strips. The sweet and sour sauce tastes more like ketchup than sweet and sour sauce. We were there for 45 minutes yesterday, and they never put out any fresh cocktail shrimp or stuffed mushrooms, both remained empty. We couldn't tell you what our waitress looked like, she never checked on us. New items on the buffet, home made onion rings and potato skins were very good. Chen's Garden just opened again after being closed initially for Covid 19 precautions. They are currently open only for take out. I heard they were going to be cooking dishes fresh to order and I was very happy with the crab Rangoon and chicken lo mein I ordered. Rangoon can come out greasy sometimes and the lo mein oily, but both came out perfect. The veg in my noodles were a perfect al dente, having just a bit of crunch. The place has never been anything to look at, so I hope they will clean up/spruce up the dining room before they open their Buffett back up again. I'm glad they're back! read more

Arrived at 11:05 a.m. ordered water & 2 buffett. The water tasted soapy, like glasses were washed but not rinsed. Food was disgusting! Chicken bites were tough & dry could not cut with knife, noodles cold. Tried the crab salad it was tough, stale kind of rubbery - just spit it out in napkin. The sweet/sour soup was watered down. Cashew sauce was watered down, cashew nuts stale. While we tried to eat a guy from kitchen came out and scooped his glass in the open ice cube bin - nasty. Dust & dirt hanging off pictures, the dining area was stacked with boxes of supplies - felt like we were eating in a storage room. Left hungry & felt dirty. read more

Service is minimal (drinks + check only), also as expected of a buffet. The environment is largely quiet, as 80% or more of the clientele are older folks. Been coming here regularly since it opened. It's usually pretty good, but the last two times I went, including this evening, it left much to be desired. At 7 PM this evening, the buffet was in sad shape. Most trays were almost empty. What remained in them was old, stale, and pitiful looking. The tiny little pile of garlic green beans, the ones that look so vibrant and taste so delicious at noon, were wrinkled, brown, and limp. The chicken chunks for cashew chicken were hard and dried out. There were only 4 or 5 boiled shrimp left in the tray. The California rolls were all dried out. Even the rice had dried out. If I were the owner, I'd be embarassed to keep the door open and continue serving the public once it reaches this stage. Blah ! read more

My husband and I are Chinese food snobs. When we moved back to the area in 2006, we were sadly disappointed with the local choices for Chinese. Then came Chen's Garden last summer (2008). What a welcome new restaurant! The buffet has lots of variety and everything is always fresh and delicious! They also have a Mongolian grill where you pile up your own fresh, raw ingredients and they are steam grilled to perfection. It's included with the buffet. The decor is beautiful and tasteful. The buffet may be good here but this is NOT cashew chicken as found in most Chinese restaurants.
