Overall, pretty good but not great. We ordered carry out, so we can't comment on ambiance. I think the delivery was contacted out and the person left it near the front door without knocking. The good part about the food was that it had some spice. Some Americanized Chinese food is pretty plain. This food had a good amount of spice without burning our mouths. The not-so-great part is that the food was a little mushy and overly breaded. The shredded beef was not crispy. The orange chicken was overly breaded. The spring rolls were soft and not crispy. They seemed to be a little undercooked and doughy under the outer shell. Overall, the food was pretty good, but not as good a a couple other carry out places. Hula Inn is that reliable Chinese take out place that you can pick any dish and be impressed. Our favorite dish has turned out to be the beef chow fun. The beef is very tender and melts in your mouth. The noodles are cooked to perfection as they're chewy and filling. I came here in the morning and order the egg foo young while I was waiting for my son next-door getting his haircut at the Barbershop I ate one egg foo young while I was waiting in my car I did feel sick after eating it for some reason I don't know if it was because it was too much grease in it but once I got home I decided to share it with my daughter and my son. While, my daughter was sitting and eating hers. She found a roach inside of her egg foo yong. Very sickening and disgusting. Ordered here for the first time and extremely disappointed! Szechuan Spicy chicken was full, I couldn't still taste the flower and super salty. General Tso chicken was so bad, the chicken was so hard and bready. The lo mein with chicken was flavorless probably the only 2/5 dish. Scallion pancakes were dripping of oil, yuck! Mixed feelings about this place... it's like your typical 90s small town "Chinese" restaurant. Chinese in quotations because it's as Chinese as Panda Express. It definitely hits a spot but you'll be sorely disappointed if you're expecting your 2020s authentic Chinese food in the DMV region. I ordered a Beijing black bean paste noodles and Peking shredded pork and what they cooked up was unrecognizable. That said the taste was good if you don't know what you're getting, and my white husband and toddler son loved it . Their wonton soup also had the thickest skinned wontons I've ever came across but it was so reminiscent of homemade egg noodles soup it was oddly satisfying! I really enjoyed the chicken lo mein, it was wasn't too oily like other places and had a really good ratio of noodles to veggies (not too many veggies, which is my preference). The rating fits this Chinese delivery restaurant well, and that is okay with me. Delivery was quick and the food had a nice flavor to it. The Wonton soup was kinda bland, which was a letdown for me, but the Kung Pao chicken was good as was the Lo Mein. I also got two egg rolls which were both really crispy with plenty filled in. Not disappointed with them at all. In general though it is strictly okay and nothing to get worked up over. Short and simple review today. I used to consider Hula Inn mediocre but I would still order delivery or carry-out from there often since I live less than a mile from there. That was the past. This year, the restaurant was sold to new owners who have made many positive changes. First of all, the restaurant itself has gotten a facelift. They removed a wall that made the previous restaurant feel tiny to open up the space and make it feel much larger. They also added lighting which makes it feel more warm and inviting. The TV that used to sit behind the bar is now on the wall in the dining area which is a nice change to further boost the dining experience. Then the new owners changed the food. Many of the original items on the Hula Inn menu remain there, but several new options have been added such as the noodle soups. Some items were removed (like shrimp toast which was one of my favorites) but overall the entire menu is better now than before. On top of that, the quality of the food itself is much better. I admit that several of the items taste much better now than they used to (for example their Kung Pow recipe is much more flavorful now). Overall, it's still a small restaurant that isn't going to blow your minds by any means, but it is much much improved over its previous iteration. For quick, cheap, convenient Chinese food, it ranks right up there with almost any other restaurant in the area and has just earned the top spot for my lazy weekday dinner option. read more

This back in the warehouse area on Ox. The gentleman who answered the phone was friendly. My daughter was happy to find that they had egg rolls. Most places have just spring rolls, Hula Inn has BOTH spring rolls & egg rolls. My daughter firmly believes that egg rolls are superior and these were excellent. We also had their bbq spare ribs. I don't know where they got these ribs from, but they were fred flintstone size. So freaking big! They very tender and juicy too! Got the combo seafood fried rice, pineapple shrimp fried rice, and chicken fried rice. The pineapple shrimp fried was very clean tasting, not overly seasoned, it really let the pineapple shine. The Chicken fried rice was fresh, did not need any extra seasoning like soy or duck. The chicken was not dry. There was a lot of onion though. The seafood fried rice had lots of seafood, shrimp, scallop, crab. They did not skimp on it. It was also not overly seasoned fried rice. They really wanted to showcase the seafood, but the hubby wished there was a little more seasoning to it as it really wasn't very fried ricey. The food was delicious! Ordered combo lo mein, young chow fried rice, salt & pepper squid, and bbq ribs. I would probably give 4.5 stars if I could. The deduction would be for a few "surprises" that weren't in the menu descriptions. Our first surprise was that the young chow fried rice had tomatoes and iceberg lettuce in it. Every time we've ordered young chow fried rice from other places, it has basically just been combo/house fried rice without soy sauce. Thankfully, the tomatoes and lettuce were easy to pick out. The rice was still flavorful, had lots of other meat/veg, and wasn't dry. It really was delicious (without the tomatoes and lettuce). The other surprise was that the salt & pepper squid didn't have any "pepper". It did have fried onions and these multi-color "chips" that were interesting. Kind of like "pop chips". They tasted fine, but they were chewy, as if they were really stale. I'm not sure if they were actually stale or if they're supposed to be chewy. Either way, the calamari was good, and that was the most important part. The only other complaint was that it was pricey for the serving size. Speaking of prices, I recommend ordering directly through their website. I overpaid quite a bit by ordering through a delivery service, which I realized too late. Plus, there are a ton more menu options on their site vs. the delivery service. Will definitely be ordering from them again. read more

I don't like doing this, but I Just ordered a fairly large order, and threw pretty much the whole thing away. The general tsos chicken wasn't chicken it was parts of chicken, like the parts you trim off, all the fat and ligaments and skin and just a mushy slime ball it wasn't breaded it was completely inedible, every single bite. So the whole thing went in the trash. We also got beef on a stick, wasn't fully cooked and smelt kind of like BO. Next we got pan fried dumplings, also tasted and smelled rotten and they were the size of tennis balls, when did dumplings turn into giant meatballs rolled in thick dough??? The chicken lo mein looks harmless, but the flavor isn't right and brocade all the other items were so bad, I couldn't get myself to eat that either. The sweet and sour chicken was edible by my kids and the crab Rangoon was tolerable, but I basically just threw $60 worth of food away. I won't be back here. Soooo disappointed. read more

One and a half stars would be relatively generous. I feel like I'm betraying my heritage for knocking a place whose front of the house is run by real live Asians, but wow. Even with charity points for its awkward location in a small strip on a side truck route, walking in and smelling stale urine despite a sign stating "No Public Restroom" sort of set the tone for the whole visit. No problems with service; a little too long to clear plates occasionally despite being able to count the number of tables on your fingers, but very attentive with opening questions and water refills. $7 lunch buffet. You almost don't get what you pay for: one stand of about eight or ten hot trays and two soups. At first glance the pupu options looked the most appetizing, but the cream cheese in the crab rangoon tasted slightly off despite a decently done wrapper, and both the spring rolls and eggrolls were uninspiring in flavor and filling. The illusion of acceptability continued with the sweet and sour chicken with the lightly puffy exterior but slightly tough, almost freezerburned meat within. The egg drop soup was palatable, though the fried wonton noodles on the counter and a dash of finely ground black pepper at tableside practically make this a highlight. Triple delight and general tso's chicken went fast, leaving behind the unsightly tiny nuggets of hunan chicken for the other carnivores. Fried pieces of bone-in chicken were a tad a underdone at the core, yet perfectly crisp on the outside. Barbeque beef dumplings are rightfully hard to mess up, though greasier than necessary. Curry chicken was almost delightful after everything else tried, without help from the mushy fried rice. Fried donut balls were way too sugary on the outside. Poorly flavored squid-shrimp-celery stir fry. At this point I didn't care to try the hot and sour soup. Sorry but no one who's had the real deal would eat here. Okay who am I kidding- even as far as cheap Chinese joints go, the edibles here were extremely salty, oily, and guaranteed to make for a fun night of heartburn. Not to mention my boss and I were the only people in the place (should've been hint #1 to ball out), and the wait staff managed to neglect filling our water glasses several times. I wish I could say I loved the food here, but I can't. The people working there are phenomenal, so it pains me to write a slightly negative review about their food. But it was pretty disappointing. However, if you like overly Americanized Chinese food, this would be a great place for you! The "fried rice" was just white rice with soy sauce, no lie. No egg, no veggies. The sweet and sour chicken and general tso's shrimp were presented in a rather unusual way too. The proteins were in a separate container from the sauce. At first I thought this was exceptionally clever so the batter didn't get soggy, but after trying it, it just wasn't as good as when it all gets mixed together and the flavors soak in. It reminded me of serving macaroni separate from the sauce, which is a big sin to me. Also, there was too much breading on the shrimp and they were shaped into rings, which wasn't at all optically appealing. I felt like I was eating a shrimp donut and started dipping them in the separate container of sauce like I do with a cookie in coffee. I looked incredibly American eating it that way. Today, boy am I so in love with my meal. I ordered Singapore rice noodles with chicken and a hot & sour soup. The noodles were oh so DELICIOUS! I ate every strand of noodles, every piece of chicken, and even the onions too. The dish is perfectly seasoned. The amount of curry seasoning used was just right. The hot & sour soup was definitely cooked with tender loving care. Every spoonful of soup is like a perfect marriage. Well mixed and cared for. Unlike when you tried other hot & sour soup you can taste the vinegar the restaurant used to make the soup taste sour, but Hula Inn, they use more than just vinegar (if they use vinegar at all).
