Not sure what happened to Chens. New cook?? BAD cook. But we got our first terrible order from them. We ordered lunch at 1 pm. It appears that they used old oil to cook with, so the pork fried rice was extremely BROWN & was definitely not fresh. It had to be more than a day old. The rice was excessively brown, dry and tasted like old grease. The WORST ever from any Chinese restaurant in Lakeland. We tossed it in the trash. My chicken fingers were spared, dont ask me how. The egg rolls were beyond brown. I can't believe they even gave them to us that way. Pictures show this hot mess. I haven't called them yet,because I was too bus,but I will be. Food is really good, met expectations and couldn't be happier.....except, I have gone to this restaurant 4 times and twice they didn't open up on time and wouldn't answer the phone. Not sure what's going on, and yes before you ask, it was on a day and time they should have been open. I enjoyed the food enough to give them another chance, but dang, how can you NOT open up on time?! Visiting some Friends up here in Lakeland and had a taste for Chinese. The recommendation for Chen's Wok came from there family friend. Couldn't find a recent online menu, so ordered on the Fly (Dinner for 6: Chicken Fry Rice, Pan Fried Noodles, Honey Chicken, Chicken Wings and some Boneless BBQ Ribs). We ordered for Pick up and GPS'd over. Restaurant was easy to find and food was ready within 20 mins of calling. Brought back to house and found Order was correct, with no issues. Decent Chinese food here. Not many good Chinese restaurants in Lakeland. After trying 3 other Chinese restaurants I decided to try Chen's. Picked up food after work and brought it home. Combo.... Moo Goo Gai Pan, Eggroll, Fried Rice and Wonton/Egg drop mix soup. Everything was very good except the eggroll. The Moo Goo Gai Pan had plenty of plump pieces of chicken and vegetables in a nice sauce! The rice was good and the wonton Egg drop soup had a nice flavor and the wontons were good as well! The only part of the meal that was not good was the egg roll. It had a funky old musky flavor so I wound up throwing it out. I like egg rolls that are crispy and flavorful. Kinda disappointing. Overall the food was good but go elsewhere for an egg roll. Maybe I just got a bad one and hope this is not the way their egg rolls normally taste. The food is consistently delicious, I am consistent with what I order from here which are the fried chicken wings and fried rice and each time it is on point! The family that runs this take out is very friendly and courteous and I enjoy going there however this is a small place for take out only but they do have a couple of chairs if you are so inclined to eat your lunch there. Food is sub par...it takes a bit to get the food..I did have one experience where I ordered the Sesame Chicken and it had a bunch of tiny bones in it. It would be a three star for me but the cleanliness of the restaurant is appalling!! There are kids sleeping on a make shift bed in the waiting area of the restaurant. Chens is my go to Chinese takeout in the area. When friends are over and we decide to do takeout I always Chens and no one has complained yet. Great customer service and they have implemented great covid-19 precautions. Instead of walking inside staff os behind plexiglass and you just order there and wait outside (Ive never had to wait to long. I recommend calling ahead and ordering that way). One of the trends we've recently seen in Lakeland is the opening of all sorts of Chinese take out restaurants in strip plazas. Chen's Wok is a true gem amongst these new take out restaurants. All the food is prepared fresh and in front of you. I'll be frank, this place has no atmosphere, and while you can dine at the restaurant, I suggest you dine at home. Honestly, I haven't found anything I do not like at this restaurant. One of my favorite meals is the pepper steak with onion special combination. The meal includes pepper steak, pork fried rice, and an egg roll for under $7.00. The meat was tender while the sauce had the perfect consistency (not runny or too thick), the veggies fresh and crisp, the rice was neither sticky nor granular, and finally the egg roll was crunchy. I've sampled most menu items with my family and everything is a safe bet. For those of you who've lived in Lakeland for a long time, the food is very reminiscent of China Jade at the Shoppes of Lakeland Plaza that closed over 13 years ago (before the new management). Had a pork fried rice craving and called in my order. Any order of Chinese food must be accompanied by egg rolls. The young lady said it would take 20 minutes during my call. Arrived and my order was ready for pick up. The condiments are out on the counter for you peruse (I like to drown my rice in soy sauce). Figured I'd make up for the duck sauce I wouldn't use for my egg rolls, by way of soy sauce. The container for my "Small" rice was packed. A couple of drops of oil dripped from my egg rolls when I handled them. I wouldn't expect anything else, as they were fried IN oil. I chose this place based on its yelp 5 star rating. I would down grade the rating to 3 at most. I'm visiting from put if town and ordered take out. The person who took my order was helpful & friendly. My food was ready when promised. The ambience was like a deserted hospital waiting room. My rating is solely due to the food. First, it does taste fresh. The spring rolls were deep fried which was a 1st and filled with mushrooms. This appetizer was heavier then expected. The rice wasn't fluffy.
