The Peking house is one of those places that has been around for a long time and kind of like a goal standard in some respects in the city when it comes to Chinese Food. I've gone in and dining in the restaurant and mostly I do takeout. Quite honestly, they could update the interior of the place, however, it is not a corporate conglomerate. It is a family run business as you would notice when you go to the restaurant. You can honestly tell they take pride in the delivery and the presentation of the food and it is as I said a local favorite that's been around for years. read more

FAMILY FOOD ADVENTURE IN LAKELAND!!! When you walk in it is very ancient looking, not traditional as it would look if they updated the decor. We ate and got many things. I'm not going to spend time listing everything b/c honestly everything was just ok. There was not really a single dish that stood out or gave me a reason to go back. Price to food value was not really great either. I'm sure some people like it as there were a few other tables when we went, but place was pretty empty. Service was ok as well, nothing spectacular. If this place renovated, updated their dishes and stepped up their customer service they might have something, but for us it was a 1 and done in its current state. Family run business, small, quaint, and intimate; it's just a safe space when it comes to a pretty consistent dining experience. Overall, pretty disappointed. Very run of the mail, stereotypical Chinese restaurant. The meat for the orange chicken was tough, over battered, and overcooked. The sauce was good, but very few if any fresh vegetables. The wonton soup was fine, yet it was nothing special. The service was fast, and the waitress was delightful! The wait staff would benefit from some additional training though. The portions were very good. The atmosphere is nice, too. Overall, the food was two stars, and the atmosphere was probably 3 1/2 or four stars. With a little work, this could probably be a really good restaurant! I stopped in for a late lunch and I was literally the only customer inside. I was told to choose any table and water was brought to me. I ordered an egg roll and shrimp lo mein. The egg roll came out quick and was piping hot. It was full of flavor and the plum sauce added an extra layer of flavor. The shrimp lo mein was missing some flavor. I added broccoli to the dish and the broccoli was cooked perfectly. The shrimp and noodles had no seasoning and I had to add quite a bit of soy sauce to get some flavor. read more

We love the Peking House. It's one of Lakeland's little treasures, not quite hidden away south of downtown on South Florida Avenue. It is the only sit-down Chinese restaurant in Lakeland. When I found that out and saw pictures online, I became very excited because it reminded me of restaurants I had been to as a child. Inside, it still has that old world Chinese-American looking antique feel with the large red moondoor separating two dining rooms. It's hard to define the Peking House, it's not fancy, it's not casual, it kind of straddles both. They do a lot of take-out, especially now with the pandemic, but before they had table cloths and you could feel fancy while eating in your nice blouse and jeans. Their menu has both the standard favorites and house specialties, including duck. Their food is so good. We are egg drop soup and egg roll fanatics and they make some of the best. Always fresh. Any dish you order, is always very generous with the meat versus vegetable ratio. Also, when you order a spicy dish, they will ask you what heat you would like: medium, hot, or extra hot. Medium is very good, hot is HOT, AND we've never tried extra hot! Their fried rice is very savory and flavorful. One of our fave tips, a regular dinner entree can be enough for two people. There is a LOT of food packed in those to go containers. Add soup and a couple of egg rolls and you've got a very affordable meal. Another tip - the main door looks to be on the corner of S. Florida Ave. and W. Oak Dr. but it's not, it's actually the door on W. Oak Dr. that faces Southgate Shopping Plaza. Drive down W. Oak Dr. and park behind that little shopping center that holds Peking House. There is actually plenty of parking there. If not, park in Southgate Plaza. read more

I went here for an afternoon lunch/ early dinner. There were only 2 other tables there. So overall the service was pretty quick due to the low volume of people. The server and other individuals working were very kind. However, the food really wasn't the best Chinese food. I got orange chicken with fried rice. The orange chicken lacked flavor and the rice was average. I probably would not go back due to the taste not being great and the dated interior of the location. read more

Second time eating here. The first time everything was delicious, but the second time we left 2/3 of every dish uneaten, different cook maybe? Or perhaps we were starving the first time. The rice was hard, the shrimp in the rice was shriveled from overcooking. The beef dish was salty, like swam in the ocean overnight salty. The dumplings had a weird taste, like the pork was aged somehow. The shrimp and scallops were ok, but still over salted, in fact the only flavor was salt. Chinese food is Chinese food, nothing to write home about as it all pretty much taste the same anywhere you go (unless it's a really really good upscale place). So I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch special w/o breading. I did't know that meant white boiled chicken with ZERO seasoning and zero flavor, but I do now. I did to-go so I was in and out. That's it for service. Here's a picture of the new menu prices. I don't mind paying for a great meal, and often get frustrated when people get upset over the price of good food because they'd rather go cheap for crap food than spend a little extra for a meal well worth it!! On our way home from Gibsonton Fl to Kissimmee Fl .. looked for a restaurant off Route 4 - On Yelp I didn't realize I would absolutely Love the Hawaiian Chicken so much!! It was a very generous serving of chicken, pineapple, maraschino cherries & veggies The sauce was sweet but that's why I ordered it ! The fried rice wasn't dried out, and it was Flavorful! Excellent meal ! I have my leftovers for lunch the next day !! With 30 years of eating here, it's well worth a 5 star rating, especially if you delve deeper into their menu, beyond the "Combo Specials" and the fried breaded items. I highly recommend the orange chicken or beef, the lemon chicken, the "house" chicken, the taising (ginger) chicken, green bean special, crispy duck and anything "Szechuan". Everything under "House Specialty" is great. "Medium heat" is usually just right on their spicy dishes. You can order Peking Duck with a day's notice. The closest thing to real Chinese food we can find in the area. We lived in Asia for 18 years so we recognize the difference between authentic Chinese or an American Chinese dish. The ambiance is a bit dated, but charming in a small town mountain kind of way. I was hesitant to try this restaurant due to the mixed reviews. I finally gave it a try. 1. Service: The hostess was nice and accommodating my waitress was a new employee. There were only two servers 2. Food: The soup was weird. No other way to describe it. I ordered vegetable soup and received a pseudo clam chowder without clams (see pic). The spicy chicken was too salty and not very spicy. I sent the item back. The chef remade the spicy chicken and it was still salty. I had to get back to work and did not have time to send it back again. Conclusion: Not recommended. The food is not good. read more

I recently moved back to Lakeland after about 20 years. I lived here off and on throughout the 90s and early 2000s, and Peking House was always my place to go for Chinese. I was excited to try it again, as I would have stacked Peking House against any Chinese restaurant that I've ever been to, whether that place in Chinatown in NYC, San Fran, Philly or LA. Peking House was just that good. Unfortunately, the food at Peking House isn't nearly as good as it once was, which left me very disappointed. The fried rice was extremely dry, not flavorful or fragrant, it looked like someone just threw some uncooked rice in a wok, sprinkled some soy sauce on it, and called it good. The staple of Chinese to go is the the quart boxes that we all know and love, but this fried rice was placed in a 24 oz plastic container, which for $12 is overpriced. The egg rolls were soggy with oil, and again the lack of flavor was very noticeable, the stuffing was lackluster and anemic. Dumplings, one of my favorite items from the past, was almost inedible as the mixture was just bland and the dough was falling apart. Lastly the main course, Shrimp with Lobster sauce, was watery, not flavorful, and the shrimp were hard and just not very good. It's like they just tossed frozen Shrimp in with the sauce and let it cook without thawing them first. Peking House built its reputation, one that I used to brag about with people outside of Lakeland, on great quality and delicious food. Sadly, it seems that they have lost the magic they once had and there are now much better options for Chinese in Lakeland. read more

When we moved back, I wanted dinner to be from the Peking house.. so all 8 of us came and we ordered each meal at 15.00. I used to get hot tea, wonton soup egg roll, and then beef and snow peas. My food was perfect. My sister got sweet and sour chicken, yuck.. the sauce was a cross between sweet and sour and general tsos chicken. It was awful. Dad had shrimp with lobster sauce. And it was perfect. The sitting area is old looking and needs a redo. The area you walk into before you get to your table is like a staging area. It needs a talented person to redo it all. The owners need to spend some money here. I will still do my once weekly run. But with my family we need a bigger space. Maybe a new use for that empty room in the front, larger groups??? All I know is besides the sweet and sour chicken, which should be the normal sauce and the prices cut smaller. Maybe tempora onions adding for a new look. Throw out the old menu and make a new one. Go back to the older way. You have some of the decor we expect to see. read more

Made us sick !!! We havent had chinese in a while and had eaten here years ago and it was not bad.. We are both from New York so we know what quality chinese food is . Saw alot of good reviews on the polk page and since we were in Lakeland .. and starving we went to peking house again. I will comment on 2 items we both were very angry about .. Friend rice was DRY white rice overly laden with soy sauce and between the 2 of us only one piece of scrambled egg.. there was no oil or oinion or anything added it was like old white rice with too much soy. But what made us sick was the egg rolls .. I have eaten hundreds in my life all over the country and was craving them so much i ordered and extra one with my combo . . when i broke it open .. the smell was like a dumpster on a hot day .. the insides were mush the only thing recognizable was a soggy chunk of carrot .. the smell i literally let out " omg what was that smell " when i opened it thinking something bad had happened not the greasy overcooked egg roll . The smell was BAD but i gave it a shot and took a bite it tasted rotted i pulled out all of the filling ( never in my life had i done this) and just bit into the crunchy end with duck sauce i had to ask and wait for .. i chewed for a moment and felt like gagging it was indeed rotten .. i called the waiter and told the young man i didnt want the second one which was untouched in a bowl. he quickly snatched the other one up in his fingers and took it back to the kitchen. we werent charged for the second one . My friend ate some of hers and we both felt very sick afterwards and we almost vomited shortly after. I am telling you the egg rolls were old and bad,. I will NEVER go back . i see so many good reviews .. Do they not understand what Good Chinese food is ? this place is Not doing anything to update .. the bathroom looks like a third world company and the food is not good .. and in this case dangerous .. NO mistake . If they give you Bad food what else are they skimping on ? Never again from us. I come to Peking House because it's the only sit down Chinese restaurant around that I'm aware of. Compared to other Chinese restaurants their menu is limited, especially if you like to order 'combinations' I have seen a decline in the quality of the food and flavors, my last meal was a beef and broccoli combination. The beef was tender but very few pieces. The fried rice was simply white rice woked with soy sauce, and truly flavorless (no onion, egg, veggies or sesame oil). The egg roll was over cooked to the degree that the cabbage was slimey. This place has potential to be so much better if they can improve the quality and taste.
