The size of the room was nice and good view. The cleaning wasn't perfection/spotless, but it was decent. I will say don't get a room on the side with the pool. I guess I'm past my prime to be into parties that end at 4am, but after my stay here it's official I am!!! The lamp inside the room didn't work so it was either all or nothing!! Ugh! So bad. Your room never was cleaned during your stay, that's YOUR job! The amour had scratch marks on the side like someone was dragged out by their claws!! BEWARE AND STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK: I stayed at the Grove hotel nearly a year ago and my experience was extremely disturbing to where I will never look at staying at another hotel or in this case a Motel ever again. I've debated writing this review several times and I figured it's time others must know. My boyfriend and I decided to take a hiatus and stay at the Grove Hotel due to all of the hotels being at capacity in the pines so we agreed on staying at the Grove Hotel. When we checked in we were oddly charged $10 for each room key on deposit, the staff at the desk were unfriendly and some were recognizable Queens that do drag in the shows as I have been coming to Fire Island for years I recognize The Who's who. We went up to our room and at first glance a lot of the furniture appeared to be used or looked like it was leftover from the fire. Tacky ply leather headboards that have cracked and a busted up armoire with a safe that conveniently did not lock. There are also no dead bolts on the doors which I found odd and a fire extinguisher sitting on the floor randomly. We took it for what it was and enjoyed the beach and did everything a couple could to relax. Had dinner and a few drinks and decided to call it a night around Midnight. I was abruptly woken up to the mechanical key card lock opening on the door and the door swung open at approximately 1AM. I shouted at the intruder that was entering my room and he was startled with a response to "I have the wrong room!". I thought to myself yes you sure do have the wrong room because you may not make it out alive. I got up and propped the random fire extinguisher up against the door in case the intruder came back in the night I would have even more reaction time to go into combat if need be. Next morning after not sleeping at all I went down to the desk to see the same Queens and I voiced my concerns and told them we would not be staying and I requested a refund. I was met with a response with "we have a high turn over rate here and this never happens in our hotel, there's no way someone has a master key". I began to disagree and state all the facts of what happened and a twink walked in and said "someone complained that someone came into their room last night down stairs also". Immediately after hearing this the receptionist at the desk refunded my money because he knew there was no fighting chance on arguing that someone has a master key and loots the rooms while they believe guests are out at the bars and clubs on the island. It is my personal belief this is an inside job and they profile the guests that enter based on how they present themselves, what they are wearing or possibly even the type icredit cards being used. As I mentioned earlier there are clues pointing to this, for example the doors not having proper dead bolts and safes that do not work. I have a friend also who told me a week after my incident a close friend of his stayed at the Grove hotel and when he woke up he had a guy standing over top of him while another cleared out the closet and the only way he got them out of the room was that he told them he had a gun. I was refunded all of my money but this left such an unsettling feeling that will last years and even when I have traveled since this incident,I always think twice about where I'm staying. I also regret not filing a police report with Suffolk county and I encourage others to do so if the same thing happens to them in the future. read more

It's essentially a two star motel, but for 3 nights this place got the job done - the location is right near everything and waking up steps from the ocean is a very nice thing. The beds were comfy, and the staff was friendly. The prices during the week are cheaper than the weekends when they can get into crazy-ville -- like just sleep on the beach or like...sit outside and wait for morning and buy yourself a first class trip to Paris instead. Despite recent renovations, the rooms are aging fast. There were some issues in the sense that we had no toiletries in our room, and the rooms weren't cleaned in between our nights. And there's no Do Not Disturb signs, or bolt locks that would prevent someone from coming in if they had a key. Apparently another poster in September had an issue with someone coming in at night...oh lord. To be fair, I didn't say anything - but there were oversights, so come with expectations in check. Also, if you want a little quieter stay away from the poolside, which is next to the Ice Palace. It gets very loud in there at night with the music thumping. read more

"Broadway at the Beach" open mike night on Mondays. Ariel Sinclair comedy on Thursday and the poolside show on Sunday. And then there's Porsche, the "girl of 1,000 voices," hosting the Friday night Frat Party with beer pong by Oliver. Porsche tears up the stage Thursday and Sundays, too. Nibble on eye-candy sunbathing at the Grove Hotel pool any afternoon. My nights in Cherry Grove begin and end at the Ice Palace, which celebrates 50 years this summer. The only thing open this season is the adjacent Ice Palace bar and nightclub. The actual hotel burned pretty much to the ground in Spring 2015. So, the summer season of 2015 is out of the question for lodging... The pool is open. Best events at the Ice Palace nightclub are those hosted by promoter Daniel Nardicio. Though numerous performers and theme parties during the week are also worth a visit and all have solid followings. The Ice Palace is the center of town both literally and figuratively. read more

This place is scary. The hotel rooms are smaller than my bathroom and the beds have had the springs f***ed out of them a looong time ago. Certainly not worth the price, but if you are desperate it is really more like glorified camping.....at $200 a night. The club can be fun - hopefully you can get drunk enough to be able to sleep in the closet of a room you rented on the more comfortable floor. read more

I'm hoping this is the right place to review the location is not accurate and the name is slightly off. Also, am I the first person to review since the aughts? Is this a case of What happens on Fire Island stays on Fire Island? Well, its called the Grove Hotel now and the Ice Palace is still going strong. First well discuss the accommodations and then the infamous Ice Palace. The hotel "is what it is". Its a perfect place to throw your shit (have a few pre-party drinks), shower off the sand and rocks from your body and sleep. Its not luxurious accommodations by any stretch, nor does it aim to be. The place is the definition of beach-y. I love the wooden plank floors and the slightly aged pain on the exterior. All i have to say is that the A/C worked the mirrors behind the bed gave it this whole tacky late 70s vibe (I'm sure the place's heyday). As far as the staff they were ok. I didn't get the whole $10 deposit thing for your room key until after a day at the beach nearly made me loose not only trusty cap but my cute MJ sunglasses. I didn't get the whole having to go the front desk for ice thing though. I'm like are you monitoring my drinking? Are you trying to get me to go to the Ice Palace do do all of my imbibing. If so, I would go gladly. I liked it. It was a great be achy (i'm using that word again) joint: a nightclub where people came in shorts and their flip-flops and it was actually acceptable. We saw the Porsche show and the Taylor "Hardcore" show. Both were great we sat cabaret style and had way too many of their mudslides. The bartenders outshine the hotel staff. Then we stayed for the under ware party which was fun (i don't want to tell you how many mudslides it took to get me to go out nearly naked). It was a fun time all over. Didn't do the pool b/c for most of the day it was more occupied and at capacity than i like. I traded that experience in for wide open space at the beach. Seriously the water was cool but there were few people out there. All in all i can't wait to go back. I'll go during off season though, b.c the prices (for weekend stays) are way too high. This time i stayed during the week the 2nd weekend in June and it was very cheap. Actually most Motel 6's are more expensive and i bet they don't have a beach a block away and easy access to Mud-slides. read more

As a heterosexual woman, my first trip to Cherry Grove on Fire Island was probably not what most people expect/encounter. I was in town for a 40th birthday bash and the couple hosting generously paid for a block of rooms at the Ice Palace Hotel. The room was very spare and minimalist -- which was fine, honestly, for one night. One does not stay at the Ice Palace Hotel for luxury or relaxation -- it's a place to crash and/or hook up after a night of partying. There are huge mirrors surrounding the bed, which, I'm not gonna lie, my boyfriend and I found....entertaining. There is a TV. A tiny bathroom. No phone. Really, the problem was that after a day of traveling, my bf and I did just want to sleep. And the nightclub just wasn't going to allow that to happen. Loud, annoying techno was BLASTING until 4 am. Our room unfortunately was right across from all the action, so we might as well have been in the club. If I'd had more energy, I would have been game for going down there and dancing, but alas, I was exhausted. If I ever stay there again, my plan will be to disco nap in the afternoon and then plan to just stay out until the club closes because there is no way you're going to sleep before that happens. read more

The efficiency room (217) we lodged in over the weekend of 5/18-19, 2014 was a tragic reminder of what damage Sandy wrought on Fire island. The peeling paint, weak stair boards, musty odor and rusting fixtures greeted us. Though they were scurrying around putting on fresh white trim paint, the earlier mentioned issues screamed they would not be ready for opening weekend this year. The worst part was the massive allergic reaction I had sleeping in the room which must have black-mold underneath every surface. (not to mention the 4:30am wake up call by Porsche outside our door bitching about her airline treatment.) The Ice Palace Bar which is part of the compound was in great shape and enjoyable. But bring a mask if you plan on sleeping here. read more

This is a GREAT place. While much of Fire Island can be insanely pretentious and expensive (can you say FIRE ISLAND PINES?!?!?), the Grove Hotel (which is its real name) and the Ice Palace (which is the dance floor adjacent to the bar) is a cost-effective, convenient, clean, and fun place to stay. This is not luxury - and if you want luxury, go to NYC and spend $400 in a grand hotel. This is an affordable, old time, wooden motel with an inner courtyard and pool. Sure, some deck paint is peeling here and there and decades-old wooden decks get some rot and warp a bit, but who cares?! When you come here its not to inspect the building: It's to enjoy yourself. And I have ALWAYS enjoyed myself thoroughly here! read more

SOMEONE USED A MASTER KEY TO COME INTO MY ROOM AT 12:45AM!!! The most horrific experience of my life happened at the Grove Hotel. I was staying there with my boyfriend for a few nights. We returned to the room around 11pm and went to bed shortly after. Around 12:45am we wake up to the motorized lock on the door turning and unlatch. Someone slowly opened our door and started coming in. At first I thought it was someone who had the wrong room but than realized why would there key work on my door! My boyfriend screamed at him and he closed the door and left. The next morning we went down to the front desk and told them what happened. At first they acted surprised but when another worker came in they said someone else said the same thing happened to them. They gave me all of my money back and we quickly made our way to the ferry. I wasn't going to write this review but I wouldn't want this to happen to someone else. These rooms are not secure and someone with a master key is going into rooms in the middle of the night probably to steal guests belongings. Stay anywhere else on the island because the Grove Hotel is not a safe and secure option. read more

I called to ask a simple question three times days before going to Cherry Grove and left 3 messages. I got no callback. Even when I was there, there were times when there was no one at the desk. When I got there, the room was spartan, had a uncleaned floor with sand and ants, only one reading light on one side of the bed, no phone to the front desk, a "balcony" (which we requested) which was the width of the door leading to the "balcony" and was about 10" deep. The hotel had every variety of junk piled up on the sides of the hotel which all guests had to walk past to get out of the hotel. This junk was probably from the fire that burned the original hotel down. I could only assume that the hotel owner didn't want to spend the money to have all that junk ferried off the island. There was a deck outside the office which had holes in it and was so rickety that I wondered how the owner could leave himself so open to a lawsuit because of the clear possibility of one's foot going through it. This hotel sends a clear message that the owner does not want to put any money into his hotel. Each of the two floors has a long hallway with 34 rooms that had the charm of a gulag. If you think that I'm a sour person or am exaggerating these conditions, please believe that I am guilty or neither. I'm a Motel 6 kind of person so I'm not easily turned off but this place was an insult. read more
