I worked at Pump It Up in Belmont, Kelly came in to host her son's birthday party a few months ago. A few weeks before the party she walked into each of the rooms in which her party was going to be in, she took notes, asked question about what other parties have done for specific themes, and basically started visualizing what she was going to do. This was the most detailed Star Wars theme party I had ever seen. She new how she wanted every detail. At first we didn't understand why she wanted everything in a specific spot, she had life-size Star Wars characters in specific parts of the room so the kids could shoot the bad guys with their guns. As a recovering event planner, I still wanted to put together a big duo birthday party for my two daughters, but wasn't sure I was up for the job. Our experience with Kelly was awesome. It was probably one of the two best party planning decisions we made. (The other was getting the right venue for our event.) My husband and I recently held a large anniversary and family dance party. About 6 weeks prior to the event we finally realized that we really just didn't have the time to plan the type of party we envisioned. We had booked a hall, sent a few close friends 'save the dates', lined up some musicians and were starting to flail on catering. Thank goodness (and the Little Hands community word of mouth) that we discovered Kelly when we did. Once we told her what we were looking for, she came over the next day (a Saturday) to do a 2-hour sit-down consultation (we were leaving town for a week the next day). She rapidly helped us prioritize our tasks (get those invites out!), reviewed our burgeoning website with apt and friendly critique, and took over the arrangements for food, party rentals, decorations, kids activities (40/140 guest were between ages 2 and 15), and the hall. We were left doing only those planning activities we most enjoyed, like lining up the music/dance program, encouraging our friends to come, and making artsy name badges. In fact, one of the great things about Kelly was that she was really wonderfully collaborative at whichever level we needed. - For the aspects we didn't care to get involved with, like the kids' activities and decorations, she asked us "What do you like? Rainbows and music? Great. I'll take care of it." And she did! We got so many amazing compliments on the decor. And all the kids were so happy, which made all the parents able to enjoy the party as well. - For the food, where we preferred to cut some costs and have friends help with snack shopping and veggie cutting, she again was great. She created a shopping list for snacks and alcohol. She let me marshal what I help I could from friends and was always there at the last minute for whatever was missing (like the last minute grocery run for ice, cantaloupe, and purple grapes and creating a shiny cake platter). -For the music and dancing, where we were asking friends to be dance callers and we cared to make the connections with the musicians ourselves, we merely cc'd her on communications. She mostly didn't get involved except to close the loop on some of the forethought aspects, like renting the right-sized stage. The fact that she was in on all the planning helped tremendously when the inevitable thing went wrong. In our case, our two servers were a no show, but Kelly and her staff handled it (seemingly) seamlessly. They switched over from the kids' activities as needed to fill in, and I'm pretty sure most of my guests never even noticed the absence. She was there from setup to cleanup, making things run smoothly and encouraging me to go enjoy my own party. Something I frankly would not have been able to do if I had still been in charge of all the details. Speaking of details, she also was incredibly detail-oriented as needed. She obtained a facilities floor plan and drew up the rental placement diagram. She remembered that I once mentioned that I didn't want to have to go home with or pop 100 balloons and arranged to send balloons home with the kids as they left. And she read through the whole facilities rental agreement so that we were on top of fulfilling our cleaning contract at the end of the party. Oh, and did I mention that she also served as our photographer? A fabulous bonus given that our friends who took all the pictures at our previous events didn't end up coming. We had arranged for a huge group photo to be taken from a ladder, and Kelly didn't even blink an eye when I asked her if she was afraid of heights. She just asked, 'How high?'. I admit, at one point we weren't sure if we should hire her and spend so much of the "savings" from not going with a traditional catering company. But it was so clearly the right decision. We got exactly the type of party we were looking to host, working with her was a treat, and the month leading up to it was relatively stress free since we knew she was handling so many of the details. I was concerned he might be too young for it, but this did not turn out to be the case. And she was able to incorporate the new lego movie into her decorations. I have used a party service in the past and it was ok and super pricey, but Kelly really made our party feel special and having her there to keep things running smoothly was such a plus.
