I love to chill out on a Sunday afternoon, here at Laurel Street Arts. The place gets busy as there are lots of fun, creative people looking for a place like this to express themselves. You look around and find what you want to paint, pick and choose your colors, brushes and water bowls to clean your brushes. Find a comfortable spot to start and then do it. I find each time I go I do better and I tap into my divine, creative self. I have two to three hours to get 3 or 4 layers of paint to make a deep expression of myself as an artist. Have come to Laurel Street Arts several times now and always have a blast. They have a huge selection of items to paint, as well as a wide selection of paints, brushes, tools, stencils, and more. The store itself is large and airy with many tables and seating. I've also been to All Fired Up in Burlingame, and LSA is hands-down better - the space is larger and brighter, they have more pieces to pick from, and they don't limit you with paint colors. There is a $10 studio fee in addition to the price of your piece. The experience is largely self-serve: you pick your piece, paints, tools, and table and paint at your own pace. Staff members are around to answer questions, and they'll call in 7-10 days for pickup. The one thing I wish LSA had was a membership. I love coming in to paint regularly (especially since they often add new items) but the $10/person studio fee discourages me from coming as often as I would like. read more

I always love taking kids to LSA, they have a great variety of things to choose from to paint and most recently I did a couple of plates. I love that they have stamps for use and really anything you could think of. I feel like it's on par with other pottery places in the area price wise and I'm always happy to pay the studio fee + whatever the cost is for the pottery painting. read more

Lots of items for children as well as adults. Unglazed pottery, mosaics, and glass slumping. Per person charge in addition to the item you choose. Large variety of unglazed ceramic items. Wide assortment of colored glaze colors and brushes for a wonderful experience. Small children should probably bring an apron to protect their clothing. We will be back! read more

Best birthday party ever!! We love LSA and it was the perfect place to host our six year old's birthday party. Sheena makes everything SO easy! The girls had a great time painting and enjoyed snacks and cupcakes outside afterwards. They played with chalk and bubbles and it's a great place to run around when they're done painting since the street is blocked off. This is a one stop shop for a party and a great value. I liked the selection of pottery they have as well as the many colors to choose from. Other than that we were pretty much on our own. It was our first time. No-one said "hello". No one said bye or "thank you for coming in" I thought the staff was very passive. They didn't explain or show us anything at all unless we asked them several times. The were mostly busy telling us that they are closing at five (she mentioned that about 5 times). That particular staff member also mentioned we may not have enough time to do the painting and the glass mosaic thing (turns out 95 minutes is more than enough). We were the only ones there and it was clear they wanted us to leave. The whole time I was there I felt like we were an inconvenience to them. It was supposed to be a special outing for me and my daughter but instead I left there never wanting to go back EVER. read more

Pretty dismal visit today with my five year old son. Seems like they cater to Summer camps and parties over walk-ins. If they can't provide excellent customer service to everyone, then have specific hours for walk-ins. This was my second time and I needed a little refresher on the process: getting paints, number of coats, etc. A younger gal casually walked us through it and then disappeared to take care of an adult party. We sat at a table where an older woman was training a gal how to do some mosaic art, etc. At one point, my son wandered over to some bins by the window and was looking at them when the older woman loudly said " do not touch those young man, those are other people's art." We were finally acknowledged by the perceived owner in a disciplinary way! I get rules are rules and that my son cannot rifle through things, but there was no sign and there is a way to talk to little ones- especially paying ones! He can't be the only curious kid to look at those bins...label do not touch or move them to the back! For a place that advertises for children, I found her tone to be rude and quite unwelcoming. No one came to check on us during our painting and when we were finally finished I recalled that you are supposed to let your piece dry under the heat lamp, but someone else had their art on it. I went to pay the $25 for one ceramic item- don't get me started on the cost! And the girl did not bother to answer me when I asked about the drying process. I won't be back and honestly feel they should comp my recent purchase as I was very dissatisfied with the the customer service. read more

Laurel Street Arts is a great place to take kids, to have a date, or even for yourself as a relaxing activity for the day. The staff are very nice and welcoming, making sure to go over everything. They have a great selection of paints and materials such as various sized brushes, palates, sponges, stamps, and fine tip squeeze bottles. Everything is very organized and neat, very family friendly as well. Only downside for me was that there wasn't a huge selection of sculptures to choose from but it may be because we came on an off day. A delightful surprise was Cooper the dog! He belong to the owner, she was very nice about letting all the kids pet and play with him! He was a great company to have as he would just walk around and poke his head in occasionally to say hi. Oooooh I love my glass candy dishes! My friend and I dropped in one Saturday afternoon and designed a couple of glass squares, to be fired/molded into candy dishes. The staff were super helpful, giving us tips and tricks on how to make our artwork pretty. We were there for about 90 minutes total - choosing our items, getting the tutorial and then designing our dishes. It cost us each $35. That includes the facility fee, tutorial, supplies, firing and mold. The bigger your item, the more expensive the price...obviously. I picked up our items a week later and just loved the results! read more

PROS: Cheaper than other places like Color Me Mine, easy going place --I was able to paint with coffee I brought in and play music, good variety of ceramic items to choose from, and stencils. CONS: Not enough paint colors and I'm not sure why the thinner brushes are kept at a different place than the rest of the supplies. **They don't call when your items are ready. This is my new favorite place to go for painting ceramics! The studio fee is the cheapest here out of all the other painting workshops. It's only $8. I went on a Thursday and they have a deal that's buy 1 studio fee get the 2nd free. As for the ceramics, they are all fairly priced. I chose a big mug as my ceramic. We hosted a birthday party for my 11 year old and 10 of her friends. The party reservation process was easy and the women I spoke with to book and confirm were friendly and helpful. The party day was smooth sailing, easy to arrive with refreshments and quickly set up. The space was ample and inviting. I gave only three stars because I was disappointed in the craft itself and the service from the hostess. The girls were friendly and helpful, but pretty much were hands off the entire time, We weren't greeted as we came in the door arms full of party supplies, I had to track them down for extra glue, ask for paper towels. The party experience could really be enhanced if the party staff could provide a brief color wheel lesson or more ideas for the kids (holding up a few samples just wasn't inspiring). For the price you pay per child, the value just isn't there- see my photo of the mosaic frame. With a bit more advice and direction- color coaching, fitting the shapes together- the kids could have really made something fantastic. My advice is book a painting party, the kids were done with the mosaic really quickly and the painting might have captured their interest and attention better. It's a good thing the party staff had paper for the kids to color, we were left to fill about 20 minutes of party time with not much to do. read more

We were greeted by Lena and she was very sweet and helped my friend figure out stuff with her 1st ever ceramic project! Lena had a ton of ideas and gave us good suggestions. She even lent us some carbon paper to quickly transfer our designs. The prices are very reasonable. The staff of was friendly and helpful getting us set up to paint pottery and make glass mosaics. It was a lot of fun! The place was clean and well stocked with plenty of paint. It was a bit pricey at $72 for 2 pieces of pottery and 2 small 4 inch plaques plus sitting fees (1/2 price for kids on Mondays). My 7 year old daughter got a gift certificate to Laurel Street Arts and couldn't wait to use it! She'd originally wanted to paint some pottery, but when she saw the fused glass pieces, changed her mind. We both chose 4" flowers to decorate. The girl that helped us was great. She was friendly, gave us the instructions we needed, since it was our first time, and then left us to create. When we had a question or needed help, she was always available and helpful. My daughter and I spent about an hour and a half creating a glass collage on our flower bases. We enjoyed creating our pieces and enjoyed the quiet (despite a summer camp class going on), calm atmosphere and never felt rushed to finish. They called us a week later to come pick up our fused pieces. We were not disappointed! They turned out awesome! We will definitely be back. Costs: $18 each for the 4" flower base. (The price increases as your base becomes larger.) $8 studio fee for adults. $5 studio fee for children. (We got lucky and the day we went, it was buy 1 get the 2nd studio fee for free!) read more

The staff is SO wonderful and nice, and give just the right amount of structure to be helpful but to also make you feel like you can do your own thing. This place is so fun, and very affordable compared to other places in the area. They have a good selection of pottery (coffee mugs, wine glasses, animals, plates, piggy banks, bowls, etc.) and paint colors to choose from. The staff did a nice job explaining how to choose and use paint so that your piece turns out as expected. They have a good "sample" of what each color will look like after it's fired in the kiln. Be careful though, I almost used the wrong color on my piece because paint was put away in the wrong section, and it was a very similar color. Make sure to check the paint numbers, and I suggest only using one color at a time so that you aren't playing the guessing game (since the color looks so different before it's fired). It took awhile to paint my piece because I took my time and found it very therapeutic, but I doubt I'll return because they don't have a wheelchair accessible restroom for my wife. I thought about bringing her here for a date night, but she wouldn't be able to use the restroom if needed - even to wash her hands (it's practically a closet) and I want her to feel comfortable. I'll have to look around for a pottery place with a wheelchair accessible restroom for our date night. Suggestions? read more

Just went tonight for the adult/late night session they hold once a month. I had so much fun and enjoyed my time there. The staff was great; they thoroughly explained the process, helped me and my friend with anything we needed and checked in with us several times. I've been to chain ceramic painting places before and they are always so uptight about how much paint you use (actual amount & number of colors per piece), have limited tools, and hover way too much to a point that it's overbearing. Sweet! This is an unassuming little shop on a quaint street in San Carlos... Inside is a pretty large selection of arts and crafts that fall into three main categories: 1) All sorts of pottery pieces waiting for YOU to bring them to life - ranges from functional pieces like bowls and plates to more whimsical ones like dragons and frogs. 2) Glass fusing - we didn't do this, but saw some pre-made pieces and they look awesome! 3) Mosaic tiling - see #2. The pottery painting is pretty standard - you choose what you'd like to do, choose your paint colors, sit down and make it pretty. They have a nice work space (we were the only ones there, so it was relaxing), a pretty large selection of pottery pieces and paints, and all the tools you need to do the deed. Pick up happens about a week later. ********** Tip - There's an $8 studio fee per day, so if you're planning on painting more than one piece, or want to try your hand at more than one of their offerings, go there earlier in the day rather than later, so you'll be able to finish everything. ********** Overall, a very fun place for anyone with an artsy itch. A great place for pottery painting, glass fusing and mosaics!! Went here this past weekend with some girlfriends and had a great time. Granted there were a decent amount of children in there (we arrived around 3pm) it was still a great place. We had a huge table for the three of us, plenty of supplies: tape, brushes, stencils, BOOKS, etc. I really was impressed by the amount of things that you can do here. I know that I will definitely be back to do some more pottery and to also try out the mosaics and glass fusing!! :) I know that they have a diva night thing on Fridays and I'm sure that would loads of fun too and minus the child factor! read more

As a father with 4 children, I can say that this is THE place for a spouse present. Kids love the fun of getting covered in various non-life-threatening chemicals (paint) and making something special for Mommy. From a material perspective (~$15 per piece) it's a bit pricey but the Mommy's reaction 'is priceless'. Nice place for a children's birthday party. Came here for my nephew's (R) first birthday party. There were about 20 kids there painting various objects. My nieces painted a cup and a firetruck. There was a variety of paint colors for them to choose from. It was a nice and relaxing party where kids don't get all tired from running around. The place was arranged as long tables with benches on either side which was nice, and there was room for adults to mingle and catch up with each other and check in on the kids too. They also got the footprints of the babies, since they were too young to paint and moved around a lot which would make it difficult to do handprints. They got my nephew's footprint, and then my brother-in-law painted around it. They then collect all the pottery and will glaze it and call when the pieces of are ready. Afterwards, we had food that we had ordered and brought it. So we had ourselves some pizza, wings, and fruit. Great, because the kids got to sit down at the long tables again. Good venue. Would be a fun place for adults to come and do some pottery together as well. They also had more tables in the back so people who were walking in and/or were not part of the party could still paint. Adore this place! I frequently paint pottery and wait a week for them to fire it up for me. You can stay as long as you want--they charge a flat painting fee--other places charge per hour you spend painting. Lots of colors, brushes, stencils, water etc waiting on a table for you. Staff is warm and affectionate; they care about your art piece just as much as you do!! They do parties and on certain days of the week, they offer promotions. I've taken my two kids to Laurel Street Arts to make clay gifts several times before scheduling my daughter's birthday party there. I highly recommend Laurel Street Arts for a child's birthday party! 1. Making reservations was quick and easy. A deposit was required. 2. Staff made suggestions regarding food brought in for lunch. 3. When we arrived on the day of the party the table was organized for the girls and we added balloons as decorations. 4. The staff helped the girls with questions and managed the time. 5. A week later when I came to pick up the clay pieces, each piece was wrapped individually with the child's name on the outside of the bag. All the pieces were placed in a large plastic bag with a bow. This surely made the pick-up process hassle free. The girls had a great time at the party. (We walked down to Vanilla Moon afterward for cupcakes.) It was a stress free parent party too. read more

I agreed to watch my six year old nephew for the day and I wanted to spend time with him doing something productive. We came to Laurel Street Arts and we had the entire place to ourselves. The very friendly older woman who was working explained where all of the paint and materials were and helped us with our aprons. I let my nephew pick out any item that he wanted (he chose a shark) and I chose a large mug and we sat down to paint. I liked that the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing and there are many many items to choose from. The space is decorated with samples of different projects that you can create and it helps to get some inspiration of where to start since there are so many options. I haven't done any arts and crafts in a very long time and it felt good to just focus on creating something. It was a very relaxing and fun experience and it was nice to see my nephew get so excited about painting his shark. The cost is a little pricey in my opinion (I spent $54.00 total) so, it's not something that I would do all of the time but it was a nice way to spend a few hours of bonding time and we now each have a keepsake from that day. read more

We LOVE painting our own ceramics....it's so much fun! The ladies at Laurel Street Arts are helpful and great with kids...we have so much fun there....there's only 2 problems: -a bit of a drive from us -wish they offer better quality green wares....we spend so much time and effort on painting them...porcelain would be great! We have been coming here with our kids for the last 8 years. It's a great place for birthday parties and for making other gifts, such as ornaments for Christmas. Our kids have also done the summer camp here and they come home with some wonderful items. The owners are interesting and they do love having kids come in and paint.
