My husband and I arrived in Myrtle Beach on Friday night and ate at The Chesapeake House for our first night's dinner. Overall, we were pleased with our dining experience. I took Don's advice from a previous review, and ordered the baked flounder...wow - it was amazing. The crab meat on top of a perfectly cooked flounder was divine! It was a melding of fresh fish and crab cakes - two of my favorites. The hushpuppies, as another reviewer had stated, are the BEST I've ever had, too...the sweet outer coating and the honey butter compliment each other nicely. I ordered the sweet potato fries and coleslaw and wasn't impressed, though. The fries didn't seem freshly cut, rather frozen, and the coleslaw had too much mayo to even try. We ordered the scallops as a starter. My husband liked them...I did not. My husband enjoyed his mahi mahi, too. Lastly, we ordered the cheesecake...amazing! I wonder of it's homemade...? Our favorite restaurant Myrtle Beach for over 20 years. Not too fancy or expensive. No where else can you get the cinnamon rolls and fish stew to start. My favorite dish is the stuffed flounder, but everything I tried is good. It's not a vacation if we don't get to Chesapeake. read more

Our family has been coming here for years. Never disappointed. I had the mahi mahi, from the earlybird menu(if you get there before 6pm) it was grilled to absolute perfection. I didn't have to put anything on it, was tender, moist, perfect! Daughter had fried flounder, she didn't order it fried but it was still good. Other daughter had shrimp creole, she liked it, it was spicy. We've had desserts, love the walnut chocolate pie. That bread basket is truly wonderful, some of the best hush puppies I have ever tasted. Great view of the pond/lagoon. read more

Great food with friendly service and family friendly. Moderately priced. IMO, the best hush puppies you will eat. The bountiful portions will fill you up. Ribeye and lobster were excellent as we're the grilled and fried shrimp. Go early or you will be waiting. read more

We had a delicious New Year's Eve dinner last night. The CH was very busy with a 25 minute wait. The cinnamon buns and hush puppies are excellent. The lobster pie has loads of lobster and seafood -- highly recommend it! The salmon salad was delicious -- the salmon great. The baked flounder is deservedly a house specialty. We unfortunately didn't have room for dessert as servings are large. Worth a trip if you are in MB. read more

Each meal starts with homemade cinnamon rolls, hush puppies, and ex excellent fish stew. Definitely a must try if you're in Myrtle Beach.

Food was very good, except we both had the sweet potato fries which were limp and tasteless. Bread basket contained excellent hush puppies and cinnamon rolls made on the premises. Caters to a lot of large groups and as there were only two of us, we were a bit "lost in the shuffle", but we were in no hurry. Too dark and lacking ambiance and smelled a little musty. Need to do some sort of spruce up...however they were busy so I guess it doesnt matter to a lot of the guests (who seemed to be local) read more

Seemed like a good old fashion family style restaurant. Prices were a little high but not over the top for a vacation resort town. Serving size was good and i have definitely left full. Appetizer was huge ( onion rings) so i am glad that the family was willing to help. We got there right after opening for the evening and there was already a line. Reservations might be a good idea. read more

Cheasapek House in Myrtle Beach SC. If you are looking for fried seafood staple with great service this is the place. However a friend and I tried the shrimp creole and if you have been or from the gulf coast you will be disappointed. It looked and tasted like a can of tomato paste had been dumped out of the can with some peppers and onions added and shrimp so small you needed a microscope to find them. There was no hint if the famous creole seasoning at all. We had been informed that there were alligators in the lagoon that you could feed the leftovers to, but we didn't see that either. Our new favorite regular stop. We used call ahead to get us seated and only waited 20min when the wait was 45-60 min. They start you off with a giant bowl of fresh bread cinnamon rolls and hush puppies. Our food came quickly. Wife thought the shrimp was fantastic. I got the sirloin an it beat the pants off a steak I got at another local "steak" place. The service was quick and courteous. read more

I have been coming to the Myrtle Beach area for over a decade and this is the first time I have stopped in to eat here. My family loved the bread basket so much we ordered cinnamon buns to go. We all ate the flounder and the servings are generous. The fish stew is something I never thought I would like, but I LOVE it. I have ate at several seafood restaurants when I used to live on the coast, but this is the best I have ever had. read more

Our waitress was amazing!!! The food was great. My only complaint is the manager, Sandy, is very unprofessional. We witnessed her chastising a server. She was very very rude to the server and it ruined the atmosphere and made us very uncomfortable. Issues should be discussed in private, not in front of customers and not in the manner she used. Everything else was fantastic! I will definitely go back. Hopefully next time the manager will learn how to be professional. read more

You guys might want to have a meeting with your boy Kelv or whatever his name is. Tall, white, bald man, middle aged. He was one of the rudest waiters for being a "family owned for 45 years" restaurant. He wasn't accommodating at all, he criticized me for ordering the baked spaghetti. I have a shellfish allergy so i ordered a non seafood option and he says "you come to chesapeake house and don't order seafood?" then rolled his eyes. He then argued with my aunt about the kind of tea she ordered and made it a much bigger deal than it needed to be to go get her some sweet tea. Horrible service from this man. We had a party of 7 and all agreed it was nothing special for the price. SO expensive for what it is! $20-$25 for most meals with average portions. Also the environment is disgusting, inside hasn't been remodeled in 20 years, was very dark and depressing. Will NEVER go back bc of that server, the quality of food, and the price point. read more

Food was too salty! Heart patients anf the Hypertense BEWARE! Service was bad, they rushed coursesout to you. So much for enjoying your meal. By the way, Catch of the day means whatever was frozen from Costco. Only good thiong about the 30-45 min wait was the alligator. Not worth the drive from the strip! read more

Apparently everyone on here ate something different than what I had.....I ordered the deviled crab, which had no crab at all in it - it was all breading, onions and green peppers, my wine glass was dirty, the hush puppies had sugar in them (which may be a regional thing so I can't really include my dislike of them in this review), my salad was made with warm, wilted lettuce, 10 tiny tomato cubes and one paper thin cucumber - that's it.....I've had better seafood at Captain D's. Definitely will not eat here again or recommend it to friends. read more

I have been to plenty of seafood places, and this is by far my favorite seafood restaurant ever! Arrive right before they open to be guaranteed a table by a window overlooking the pond. Also, take advantage of their early bird specials (before 6pm, I believe). They are a better price and the portions are still satisfying. We have been here several times and are never disappointed. The service had never been anything less than exceptional. The atmosphere is homey, old-fashioned, and beach I! The owner himself seats tables, and the restaurant has been owned by the same local family since it opened. Every table gets complimentary bread basket filled with hush puppies, cinnamon rolls, and I believe one other kind of bread. Their hush puppies are the best you will ever have!! Amazing! Especially when dipped in the honey butter! If your meal does not come with the fish stew, add it! It is a truly delicious, rich tomato-based stew with flounder, crab, and lots of other yummy ingredients! We can never get enough of it! We always get the platter with flounder, deviled crab, and shrimp. All are delicious (broiled or fried, we've had them both ways) and always fresh! You simply can't go wrong with this place! Our visit last night was the second time in as many years and will be our last. I ordered fried Flounder and instructed the server to have the cook make sure the fish is cooked done and crispy to which he replied sure. When the meal arrived the fish was basically raw and gummy and I noted the dark skin side which had not been removed was sort of a jellied texture. I asked the server if he did as I had asked and he said sure, I felt he had no idea what I was talking about and he asked shall I have have the kitchen cook it some more? I said no in that I felt that would not end well. I have learned that no cook wants their food sent back and the results are never good. What he should have said was "Sir, I apologize that it is not cooked to your specifications, I will have another serving prepared for you right away. As I understand it once food leaves the kitchen it is not supposed to be returned as per the health department. Our server seemed a bit miffed that I would respond this way and he then decided to get loud voiced and argumentative to which I instructed him to drop it. I could tell that he had an attitude with for the rest of the evening, I would suggest he consider a retraining course in effective customer dispute resolution. He needs to learn how to make it go away quickly and not be the "ass" he became. As I understand this restaurant is 46 years old and enjoys the luxury of masses of people, so apparently situations like mine are perhaps predictable and allowable. as we were leaving another bus load of church goers were unloading. Tonight's Chesapeake House visit was my first and last. Food was average at best and service,at best, was horrible. We arrived at 6:30 and the lot and building were at 80% capacity and they didn't appear to be short-staffed. Server1 took our order and then mumbled something about another server handling our drinks and then disappeared. When we finally identified Server2 and asked for refills she too pulled an amazing disappearing act. After I got up and refilled our waters myself we were able to track down another server and asked her to send Server1 back to the table. Server1 arrived shortly after with no refills and a poor attitude. Instead of offering an apology about the refills or her untimely disappearance she preferred to argue that we never asked her for anything. In an amazing gesture of goodwill she pointed out strongly that she didn't charge for a lemonade refill. Complaints to the hostess were met with an apology and a promise that she would inform the manager. In an area of 3500+ restaurants there is no reason to waste a minute at Chesapeake House. Sorry CH you're one and done. read more

If I could give this place LESS than one star, I would. Some of the worst food I've ever had...had to go eat something else afterwards to get something that actually tasted good. But the main problem was the service (I'm totally willing to overlook sub par food for good service). Probably one of the rudest hostesses I have ever encountered. She was a sheer nightmare. When I wrote to complain, I used the Chesapeake House website submission form. Submitted my complaint TWICE and never heard back. Finally wrote them a private Facebook message. Got a reply back saying that our experience was "not typical" and that comments would be "passed on to the owner." That was it. No offer for a phone call, no further explanation of how the problem was addressed, no offer to do anything to make up for our bad experience...nothing. Looked at the reviews on the Facebook page...the negative ones on there either got NO response or got the same generic response I got. This place needs to SERIOUSLY reconsider their approach to customer service. Was so excited to go there and couldn't have been more disappointed. Will never be back. read more

Let me say this isn't to be mean-spirited or hateful, but an honest opinion. After seeing several wonderful reviews and knowing they serve cinnamon rolls, which I'm a sucker for, we figured to give Chesapeake House a try. We were so looking forward to eating there, but were disappointed. My wife and I arrived early and stood in line. That was no big deal as the line moved quickly and we were seated at a table with a view of the water. The waitress was nice, took our order and left us with a basket of hush puppies. The hush puppies were just OK and the cinnamon rolls were frosted with a clear glaze of sugar. I'll talk about the cinnamon rolls later. We both ordered a cup of she-crab soup as an appetizer. My wife ordered the early bird fried shrimp and I ordered the early seafood combo (shrimp, flounder, stuffed crab with sweet potatoes). Both our meals came with salad or cole slaw. We both ordered the salad, which by the way, I believe they offer maybe 3 or 4 dressings to choose from. The waitress brought the soup, which like the hushpuppies was just OK. There were small bits of shell in the soup, but nothing we couldn't handle. The waitress then brought our main course and she quickly told my wife that the fried shrimp looked 'overcooked' to her and offered a new portion. Now, once you get your food, do you really want to wait for another plate? My wife tried a few and asked me to try one as well. The batter was very crunchy and greasy, but my wife kept it just the same and didn't send it back. I ordered my meal broiled and the shrimp and flounder had some type of orange/red coloring. I thought it was some type of spice. Not so. Both the shrimp and flounder were very bland; no taste whatsoever. I've seen previous reviews that described the sweet potatoes as soggy. That should have been a clue to not order them. Well, they were soggy. I ate maybe 4 or 5 sweet potato fries and left the rest on the plate. I think it's time for the restaurant to either stop serving the sweet potato fries or find a new brand of fries. I say that because the fries are definitely not made from scratch. The stuffed crab was just that...a breaded stuffing. There was not even a hint of crab. The stuffing was also bland. I saved a cinnamon roll for a dessert and was very disappointed. The rolls were heavy and not very sweet. I didn't finish the roll and we left the other in the basket. Bottom line, the meal was definitely not worth the $61 we paid. BTW - there's signs posted outside the restaurant touting they were 'voted best.' It makes you wonder who voted. If we're ever in Myrtle Beach again, we will definitely eat somewhere else. read more

Had people tell us it was a great place. Reviews said the same. We decided to try it. We got seated as soon as we walked in but then sat for over 15 minutes and not a single person acknowledged us. No be right with you, no drink order, nothing. So we got up to leave. As we walked out I told the gentleman that seated us what happened and he said nothing. Didn't seem to care at all. Another lady spoke and I told her about our experience and she said sorry, but nothing more. If they care about their customers they should have said hang on and let us make it right. But nothing from either of the two people I told about our poor experience and also told them both that it was our first time there. Walked next door to Chestnut Hill and had our drinks and salad in less time than it took us to walk out of Chesapeake House. Chestnut Hill not only had great service but great food as well!! Will be sending our friends there instead of Chesapeake House. read more
