Amazing seafood place with great drinks and food. Not touristy at all like a lot of other place you'll find by the beach. There was a bit of a wait but we were seated way quicker than expected. We were also allowed to order drinks at the bar and sit out on the patio while we waited. We were seated in the covered patio section, which was actually very nice because it was quieter and more intimate plus provided a great view of the sunset sky. The menu was diverse and included recommended wine pairings with each entree. They gave us complimentary crackers and pimento cheese dip which were delicious and such a unique starter item. We also ordered the oysters which tasted great and were reasonably priced at $2 each. The fish tasted fresh and clean, not greasy. The whole experience felt classy, but not overly stuffy. Oh. My. Goodness. We first visited Hook & Barrel last year after seeing great reviews. We immediately fell in love. They stay packed out, but last year, we were able to get a seat (seated by host) at the bar. This year, knowing we wanted to return, we made a reservation. Upon arrival, we were seated in a quieter section of the restaurant which was quite nice. Our server, Michael, was personable, knowledgeable about the menu, and a great asset to the restaurant as a whole. Hubs ended up ordering one of the catches of the day...tilefish, while I opted for the Shrimp Louie Salad. Both were phenomenal. Oh, I didn't even mention the homemade rosemary and herb crackers along with homemade pimento cheese they bring to your table. I could make a meal on just that. By the time dessert rolled around, we were stuffed, but we grabbed what we thought was a slice of Key Lime Pie to take with us for later. It turned out to be it's own little pie which served us dessert for two nights. It may very well be the best Key Lime Pie we have ever tasted. Don't sleep on this place. Make a reservation. The Fish bites and salad were delicious. They also served a complimentary cheese dip with chips(stale). For our entrees we tried the blackened salmon, catch of the Day(flaky white fish that I cannot recall the name of, lol), Aleppo crusted Tuna(they loved it), roasted chicken breast, and the Angry clams. For dessert, they brought a small birthday cake for the Birthday girl which was excellent, and we also shared the chocolate chip cookie skillet which was also delicious. Went with my family here for dinner, it's my parent's favorite place. I must say Hook and Batter didn't disappoint at all. Everything was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend it. The old fashioned was good the only thing I didn't like was the bacon was hot and the grease go into the drink. Sides that not a single issues. What an amazing experience! The ambiance was so welcoming. The waitress, Denise was kind and informative. Can't say enough about the seafood being cooked so perfectly. Waitress brought a wood plank shaped like south Carolina as a 'gift of friendship' for the table. It was soooo yummy and the cracker was awesome! First the service is amazing our waitress made the food sound so delicious before we got started ordering, ambiance is a little loud with everyone's conversation but it is a beautiful restaurant, very clean and well organized. The seafood fettuccine was delicious! To be honest I had eat so much of the other appetizers, salad and pimento cheese dip it was a struggle to eat it all. The final touch was the desserts, we had the chocolate chip cookie in a pan with vanilla bean ice cream! Oh my this was amazing!! While Myrtle Beach has an abundance of chain restaurants and those aspiring to that status, Hook & Barrel stands apart for freshness and service. A large spot, right on the main strip, they sport a terrific HH with bites and sips. Be warned however, seating is limited and the specials are only at the bar, so arrive early. As mentioned the large dining room, is surrounded by an equally large wrap around porch area that in warmer weather, would be lovely to sit and sip, and/or even have your apps. As the menu is extensive, we were unsure of what to do with so many tasty looking options. At the end of the day, we spied a neighboring table consuming the Seafood Tower and though, oh my, that does look good! So while we started with a wedge, that was both plentiful and adorned with the right amount of blue cheese crumbles, cherry tomatoes, scalliions and a buttermilk dressing (bacon on the side for my wife to enjoy), the star was unquestionably, the seafood tower!!! Six half-shell Oysters, large shrimp, clams, a crab dip, some whitefish and a 4 oz lobster tail. Oh my was it delicious. While the tower arrived with a small portion of horseradish, upon request we were amply supplied. The only nick we had on our experience was that we had a lovely server, who has had a long stint at the restaurant, and while she did a great job, it was obvious that she was running between too many tables. Noting this in a message to the management, I promptly received a follow-up phone call where it was confirmed that they were indeed short staffed for the evening (being off-season, probably many staff aren't on the schedule). The good news was that my comment was not directed at the wonderful lady, but was acknowledged as a need to better support staff when as busy as they were. Hook and Barrel does have us hooked, so next time at the Beach, we'll be barreling over for another dinner (sorry for the pun). read more

They were kind enough to offer to split the bowls for us. * Crab pasta - full of great complementary flavors and cooked perfectly. * Smoked shrimp and grits - rich, flavorful, and cooked beautifully (a local favorite for a reason!). * Mussels - delicious, and every single shell was open. * Crab-stuffed flounder - absolutely amazing! This was also our server's favorite, and I wish I had ordered it. We love sharing our dishes so we can taste a little of everything. Next time, I would probably skip the fish bites. After a long day of volleyball, we treated ourselves to dinner at Hook & Barrel, and it was one of those rare meals where every single thing was excellent. We started with a pound of steamed shrimp, which was fresh, sweet, and perfectly cooked. The wedge salads were outstanding, with high-quality blue cheese and thick-cut bacon, while the Caesar salad featured freshly shaved Parmesan and was a hit as well. For entrées, the crab-stuffed flounder was exceptional, served with perfectly prepared mashed potatoes and asparagus. The crab cakes were some of the best we've had, and the Ocean Fettuccine with lobster tail was loaded with seafood, perfectly cooked pasta, and an incredible sauce that my daughter practically inhaled after a full day of competition. We finished with key lime pie, which was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. What really set the experience apart was that there were no weak spots. The food was outstanding from start to finish, the service was warm and attentive without being intrusive, and the atmosphere was elegant, comfortable, and welcoming. This wasn't an inexpensive dinner, but it was worth every penny. As my father would say, it was a true "blowout dinner"--the kind of meal and family memory you'll still be talking about years later. We returned to Hooked and Barrel at Duckfish/Barefoot Landing hoping for one of the excellent meals we've had here before. Unfortunately, this restaurant continues to be very hit-or-miss. The evening started off well. Our server, Tiana, was outstanding--friendly, upbeat, attentive, and very informative. She was easily the highlight of the evening and handled everything professionally. We enjoyed the house-made cracker with pimento cheese, six North Carolina oysters, and a Burgáns Albariño that paired perfectly with them. My braised short ribs with mashed potatoes and collards were excellent--tender, flavorful, and one of the better dishes I've had here. Unfortunately, my wife's corvina was another story. The skin was so rubbery and tough that she couldn't even cut through it. This is not the first time we've had problems here. On a previous visit, the scallops were sent back three separate times and came out rubbery every time. When Hooked and Barrel gets it right, it can be terrific. But when they miss, they miss badly, and it too often seems to happen with my wife's meal. Because of Tiana and the quality of my dinner, I'm giving this visit 3 stars. We may give it one more chance because the restaurant has so much potential, but consistency is becoming a real issue. read more

Another shout out was the wasabi ahi tuna and short ribs. Both were delish and not overly salty. Our server Michael was a joy to be around. He explained everything, was polite and attentive, and we enjoyed talking to him. We were placed in the Croissant restaurant dining room because of the limited space and we were a walk in. I went in for happy hour. I ordered off the happy hour menu. Beer and a cocktail, it took for ever. Sat at the bar figured that service would be quick no such luck. I ordered a salad ceaser, ordered a small shrimp cocktail and flat bread. The salad was good, the shrimp was good all 3 shrimp, the flat bread was very forgettable, spicy is not tasty just not good. I ordered a chocolate chip pan cookie , the highlight of the food. Service was slow not rushed drinks and food took a while. The place inside is nice a little too loud acoustics need reinforcement. The bottled ranch dressing was awful it absolutely ruined the salad. The restaurant closed at 9pm and we were still eating at the bar and a server was spraying cleaner directly at our food. Which I thought was extremely rude! Also the wine is poured from a tap (which is great! But it smelled like pure vinegar!) I seriously recommend the small plates--they are way better than your typical bar food! The Jumbo Shrimp are huge and juicy, and the lightly fried Fish Bites are perfectly crispy. She couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. We love the friendship pimiento board - YUM! So many favorites but narrowed it down to Oysters a la Heidi, fish bites and corvina (a delightful mild white fish served over a variety of delicious beans). To top it all off, we had the Pineapple Bread Pudding which was served with a coconut ice cream. Best dessert I've ever had anywhere and it's large enough to share. We should also mention that we sat for the first time in the enclosed patio/breezeway area - quite nice! Do yourself a favor - if you're visiting MB, treat yourself to H & B.
