Complimentary crackers and pimento cheese dip
    Kate S.

Amazing seafood place with great drinks and food. Not touristy at all like a lot of other place you'll find by the beach. There was a bit of a wait but we were seated way quicker than expected. We were also allowed to order drinks at the bar and sit out on the patio while we waited. We were seated in the covered patio section, which was actually very nice because it was quieter and more intimate plus provided a great view of the sunset sky. The menu was diverse and included recommended wine pairings with each entree. They gave us complimentary crackers and pimento cheese dip which were delicious and such a unique starter item. We also ordered the oysters which tasted great and were reasonably priced at $2 each. The fish tasted fresh and clean, not greasy. The whole experience felt classy, but not overly stuffy. We loved it.

    BLACKENED SALMON

We came to this sea themed restaurant for a Birthday celebration. We started with some signature cocktails which were OK. Then we had the she crab soup, house salad, oysters and fish bites. The Fish bites and salad were delicious. They also served a complimentary cheese dip with chips(stale). For our entrees we tried the blackened salmon, catch of the Day(flaky white fish that I cannot recall the name of, lol), Aleppo crusted Tuna(they loved it), roasted chicken breast, and the Angry clams. For dessert, they brought a small birthday cake for the Birthday girl which was excellent, and we also shared the chocolate chip cookie skillet which was also delicious. They have a bakery there which explains the great sweets. Service was good as well.

Went with my family here for dinner, it's my parent's favorite place. I must say Hook and Batter didn't disappoint at all. Everything was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend it. The old fashioned was good the only thing I didn't like was the bacon was hot and the grease go into the drink. Sides that not a single issues. All the staff was super friendly and the wait staff wanted you to fell so welcomed. If you are in Myrtle Beach you need to stop in for dinner.

This meal was the highlight of our vacation. Great service, great atmosphere. I was so excited to have gluten free bread with the pimento cheese and the bread was delicious. The crabcakes were to die for. I didn't care for the seasoning on the potatoes but they were still good. My husband got the shrimp and grits and thoroughly enjoyed his as well. They had a pretty extensive bourbon collection and my old fashioned was top notch. Great with allergies as well! Can't recommend enough.

Make reservations if possible because YES-- it's THAT good. Start off with the She crab soup- it's made in house fresh from scratch when you order it. It's the best I've ever had-- no joke! Next, get an order of the bacon-- it's not your ordinary bacon...it's EXTRAORDINARY!!! I could eat a pound;) Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals and drinks. The waitress was wonderful- Southerners generally have a little extra charm. She told us the history of the restaurant, bakery, and founder. I appreciate when staff go the extra mile to make the experience even better. I recommend the clams in white wine garlic butter sauce-- they had a bit of a kick which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert but I heard the Pinapple bread pudding is out of this world This place has got me hooked!

Loved this restaurant! Wish we'd had time to dine here again on our trip. We came by later in the evening for some smaller bites as we didn't want a full meal. Service was great, iced tea was good, and the food was impressive! The decor and interior is lovely, modern and bougie, yet casual. We were served quickly and the server was on top of refills. We were served the complimentary crispy flatbread with pimiento cheese first. So good! The seasonings in the flatbread were delicious as was the pimiento cheese. We ordered the fish bites, bourbon bacon, and a side of mac and cheese. The fish bites were a substantial portion and tasted so fresh. The mac and cheese was creamy and rich, but so so good. The showstopper was the bourbon bacon! It was thick-cut and served hanging from a jellyfish contraption that had the neighboring tables looking!! The flavor was amazing! Would highly recommend this restaurant and would love to go here again!

What an amazing experience! The ambiance was so welcoming. The waitress, Denise was kind and informative. Can't say enough about the seafood being cooked so perfectly. Waitress brought a wood plank shaped like south Carolina as a 'gift of friendship' for the table. It was soooo yummy and the cracker was awesome! The Bomber Shrimp was enough for the table amd the shrimp cooked perfectly on a bed of arugula, very happy. The spicy bloody Mary was phenomenal ! Oyster shooter had HUGE oysters that were good, not sandy. Ocean Fettuccini was absolutely huge and full of fresh fish, mussels, shrimp and fettuccine in a mascarpone cream sauce. Wedge salad had a bleu cheese that was just enough & so much flavor. Special of the day is Grilled Mahi Mahi with a blueberry Vinagrette- I could almost lick the plate clean! Can't wait to come back to try them scallops!!!

Beautiful restaurant with fresh seafood. I had a seafood Tower which was very good except for the tiny lobster tail no bigger than a large shrimp. Overall nice meal Not for everyone. Pricey Tower was $85 & tiny chicken meal was $26

    January 2026 HH Menu

While Myrtle Beach has an abundance of chain restaurants and those aspiring to that status, Hook & Barrel stands apart for freshness and service. A large spot, right on the main strip, they sport a terrific HH with bites and sips. Be warned however, seating is limited and the specials are only at the bar, so arrive early. As mentioned the large dining room, is surrounded by an equally large wrap around porch area that in warmer weather, would be lovely to sit and sip, and/or even have your apps. As the menu is extensive, we were unsure of what to do with so many tasty looking options. At the end of the day, we spied a neighboring table consuming the Seafood Tower and though, oh my, that does look good! So while we started with a wedge, that was both plentiful and adorned with the right amount of blue cheese crumbles, cherry tomatoes, scalliions and a buttermilk dressing (bacon on the side for my wife to enjoy), the star was unquestionably, the seafood tower!!! Six half-shell Oysters, large shrimp, clams, a crab dip, some whitefish and a 4 oz lobster tail. Oh my was it delicious. While the tower arrived with a small portion of horseradish, upon request we were amply supplied. The only nick we had on our experience was that we had a lovely server, who has had a long stint at the restaurant, and while she did a great job, it was obvious that she was running between too many tables. Noting this in a message to the management, I promptly received a follow-up phone call where it was confirmed that they were indeed short staffed for the evening (being off-season, probably many staff aren't on the schedule). The good news was that my comment was not directed at the wonderful lady, but was acknowledged as a need to better support staff when as busy as they were. Hook and Barrel does have us hooked, so next time at the Beach, we'll be barreling over for another dinner (sorry for the pun).

    Happy hour menu

Restaurant had jelly fish hanging from the ceiling!!! Be sure to make reservations and arrive early for happy hour (4-6 PM)! We truly enjoyed our meal. Here's what we tried: * Oysters - served at the perfect temperature and absolutely delicious. * She-crab soup - very rich and creamy with soft, tasty crab. They were kind enough to offer to split the bowls for us. * Crab pasta - full of great complementary flavors and cooked perfectly. * Smoked shrimp and grits - rich, flavorful, and cooked beautifully (a local favorite for a reason!). * Mussels - delicious, and every single shell was open. * Crab-stuffed flounder - absolutely amazing! This was also our server's favorite, and I wish I had ordered it. We love sharing our dishes so we can taste a little of everything. Next time, I would probably skip the fish bites. They helped fill me up with the bowl of mussels, and dipping them in the mussel sauce definitely improved them, but they weren't the highlight. We were all too full for the tempting desserts next door, but we did grab a quick coffee to go before leaving. Highly recommend, we can't wait to come back!

Plain no seasoning salmon , asparagus, and Brussels sprouts
    Holly D.

Absolutely plain food the worst meal I encountered alll week. The asparagus was Brussels sprouts looked good but no seasoning not even salted. The salmon was the same way. The entire table agreed the food was ruined with no seasoning I gave it two stars for looks alone the taste needs to minus stars. Expensive and one of the most wasted evenings of food look good looks are deceiving.

    ocean fettuccine
    Eleanor C.

My family and I dined at Hook and Barrel last evening and the food and service was amazing! Some of the best dishes we ate were the seafood tower, the she crab soup, and the ocean fettuccine. Another shout out was the wasabi ahi tuna and short ribs. Both were delish and not overly salty. Our server Michael was a joy to be around. He explained everything, was polite and attentive, and we enjoyed talking to him. We were placed in the Croissant restaurant dining room because of the limited space and we were a walk in. I recommend making a reservation. This was the best restaurant in Myrtle Beach so far on our trip!

Hook & Barrel Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Hook & Barrel

How is the outdoor seating? It's warm now so is there a lot of flies or mosquitoes?

There are fans outside. Yes, there are mosquitoes.

Is their seafood tower hot or cold?

Both.. Raw oysters , a selection of steamed local and varied seafoods like shrimp ,crab etc.. and she crab soup etc.. menu changes seasonally and day to day for fresh fish. Call ahead to verify what's available. This is a great place

Does anyone know what's in the pear martini on the specialty cocktail menu?

Here is some of the ingredients. It's not all but have fun. St-Germain is a French elderflower…

Hook and Barrel comes up on Yelp as offering free birthday dinner, Does anyone know if this is accurate? Thank you, the birthday girl!

No free dinner but a free dessert

Does Hook and Barrel accept cash?

Yes, ate there yesterday! Horrible food, nice server but very slow service! Would not recommend or return. Had Roasted chicken... slimy skin and chewy chicken! Cold mashed potatoes and undercooked Brussel sprouts!

Given their extensive wine, cocktail, and liquor menus, is it awkward to eat without alcohol there? For various reasons my husband and I don't generally drink, so just wondered.

Not awkward at all. I went there with my family and none of us drank alcohol. Our server offered drinks and when we declined, they were super chill about it.

Do they have a gluten free menu or gluten free indications on their menu?

I don't recall but the servers are SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about the menus, ingredients and any dietary restrictions that they would be able to easily guide you to the right choices.

Is this place open right now?

It was open back in February. You can call and make reservations it would probably be easier.

    Are there vegetarian options?

Yes. Not too many but they do look good

Just wanted to ask anyone if they had an espresso or cappuccino here yet? Any good?

    Sorry, I don't know. I didn't check on that.

    Gluten free options?

I think so, but am not certain.

Does anyone know if they charge a Corkage fee if you bring your own wine?

$25 corkage fee per bottle, and the bottle cannot be one that's on the wine list. There's always an up-to-date wine list on the website (broken down by region) to check if your bottle is OK to bring. Corkage fee is the same, regardless of bottle…

Would this place be a definite no for kids or just a "they don't have a kids menu" type of place?

Yes they have a kids menu. Grilled chicken and fruit. Cheese pizza. Macaroni and cheese with fruit. Or fried shrimp and fries. My kids got the cheese pizza and loved it.

The parking lot is usually full, which always felt like a good sign. Well... after years of saying "maybe next time," we finally stopped in -- and we're glad we did. We were in town for a few days doing some work at our place and decided to try something new for dinner. I checked Yelp beforehand to see if they had a happy hour menu, and they did -- and it looked good. We arrived around 5:00 pm. There were only a few cars in the lot at that time, and the building (which used to be a Pizza Hut) is easy to spot. When we walked in, we were told to sit wherever we liked, so we headed straight to the bar. The bartender greeted us right away, gave us menus and waters, and made us feel welcome. Since it was our first visit, we had a lot of questions about the menu. The food seemed like a fusion of Asian and Korean flavors, and we weren't very familiar with it. She was fantastic patient, knowledgeable, and very helpful. She even mentioned their Date Night special, which turned out to be a great deal. She made my wife an iced tea that was different than the usual but very good, and I had an Old Fashioned that was excellent. We decided on the Date Night Special, which is a prix fixe menu for two for $45. It includes one starter to share, a selection of small plates, each person choosing their own main from a list of six (two with a small upcharge), and a dessert to share. For our starter, we chose the Scallion Pancakes. They aren't really pancakes in the traditional sense -- more like a thinner batter that's deep-fried and served with two sauces. Both sauces were excellent, and the appetizer was a great way to start the meal. For our mains, my wife ordered the Bibimbap with chicken, and I had the Korean Fried Chicken (+$3). When they set the plates down in front of us, I looked at my wife and said, this looks really good -- why haven't we stopped here before? Her dish came in a shallow bowl with cucumbers in a sauce, thinly shaved carrots, kimchi, rice topped with an egg, and a piece of fried chicken with sauce. Mine came with coleslaw, fresh-cut French fries, and two chicken breasts covered in the same flavorful sauce. The chicken on both dishes was the same, and that sauce was outstanding. My first bite was literally, "Why have we passed this place so many times?" My wife loved everything on her plate, and I enjoyed every bite of mine as well. Our dessert, the Apple Crumble, came out before we were completely finished with our meals. This was really the only thing that could have been handled a little differently. Even though we didn't eat it right away, it was still good we just felt a bit rushed trying to finish our food so the dessert wouldn't get cold and the ice cream wouldn't melt. Overall, we found a new top-5 restaurant to eat at when we're in town. To top it all off, while sitting at the bar we were talking with a waiter named Logan. He asked where we were from and mentioned he had family there. It turned out he's a cousin of a friend who grew up with our son and was actually in our son's wedding. Just a few weeks earlier, they were all in Myrtle Beach for a bachelor party for his cousin. Small world! Don't be like us driving past for years and saying "maybe next time." Just stop in and give it a try. The food is wonderful, the service was great, and we will definitely be back.

Since it was my father's last night in North Myrtle Beach until September I thought it would be a great place to have our last dinner together for a while. I dialed up my app and made a 7PM reservation for three. We pulled in about 6:50 and found a spot right in front of the restaurant...it was going to be a good night. We got inside and chose to sit indoors near the bar. My father likes to see people and I felt this would be a good spot to do this and it was. The restaurant was mid century modern in design, airy and uncluttered...we were seated in a booth - chair combo that was a rendition of that style. We looked at the drink menu and my father went for a glass of Pinot Noir, his friend went for a lemon drop martini and I went for a Heineken 00. The waitress couldn't be nicer and quickly brought us our drinks. The lemon drop was perfect and served in an ice cold steel martini glass while my father was quite happy with his California Pinot. We reviewed the food menu and decided to share two "tables"...the deviled eggs and the pimento cheese dip with home made pork rinds. Within a few minutes, four deviled eggs arrived dressed up with a slice of jalapeño and sprinkled with bacon bits. A large plate of fresh pork rinds with homemade pimento cheese came out simultaneously. The deviled eggs were excellent with just the right texture and not too moist...the bacon bits added another layer of flavor and the jalapeño gave it a nice kick, however, the pork rinds and pimento cheese stole the show. The rinds were light and fluffy with just the right amount of crunch and the pimento cheese was superb...very flavorful with nice chunks of pimento and grated cheese. My father was diving in on the cheese so fast it was tough to get some. His lady friend also commented on how good it was. Next came the mains. My father settled in the American Waygu Burger with hand cut fries, I went for the lamb rack with string beans and roasted fingerling potatoes and the lady went for the Arugula salad with candied pecans, Granny Smith apples , goat cheese and craisins. My lamb was excellent...medium rare with a nice flavorful crust with a hint of garlic and herbs. The potatoes were well roasted and tasty while the string beans were cooked correctly but a tad bland. The arugula salad was delicious with a nice citrus dressing that played well with the candied pecans and craisins...the smith apples was a nice contrast. My father in the other hand, ate way too much pimento cheese and rinds and as a result just picked in his fries, which were excellent...salted well, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. He ended up taking the burger home. Amazingly, when dessert was brought up he was all in. Although known for their "Butter Cake" we decided to share(and by share I mean my father had about 90% of it) the Triple Layer Chocolate Cake. Turns out it's as good as it sounds...intense chocolate flavor in a very moist cake with vanilla ice cream and homemade whipped cream on the side...top notch. Sadly, it was getting late and my father had an early plane to catch so we got the bill(more reasonable than I expected), tipped the excellent waitress and said our good nights. We made plans to come back in September...although I'll be back well before that...Bar 19 Twelve will be going on my rotation.

Tried this on our last trip and it was great! Fun place, great food. Definitely recommend!read more
