We went for dinner here on a Thursday night. For the party of five that we had, we couldn't make reservations, though they might for larger parties. We put our names in, some of the members of the party went to get drinks from the bar. I waited outside. There were several white rocking chairs, which were quite comfortable. There was a bench and a table for the empty drinks. The table was full of empty drink glasses! (ha ha) We did have to wait over an hour to be seated. i understand why, however. There was a big gallery tour even the same evening. People were all out walking from gallery to gallery, perusing the art and drinking the free-flowing wine. When we were seated, we were placed at two small tables pushed together. It would have been tight for four, but they added a chair on the end for Jeff. Barry and I are "men of size" but it wasn't too awful cramped. It was, however, in a high traffic area. Our table was located next to the computerized order system. It was also between two different areas of the dining room, so the wait staff was constantly passing behind my back and walking around Jeff. His chair did get kicked, at least once. The decor is modest but classy. A few fabric accents and valances brought color to the areas around windows. The floors had either hard wood or a patterned tile. The bar area had low stools upholstered witha contemporary pattern. The bar seemed to be fully stocked. To the left of the bar is a prep area for the wait staff. This is the passage to the restrooms, located off of the lobby of the adjacent hotel. It was a bit strange to walk past the waiters, as they prepared drink orders. My one complaint about this place is the noise. I have never been in a noisier restaurant. Every table shouts in order to be heard over the din. Two of the members of my party wore hearing aids. One of them actually put pieces of his napkin in his ears to block out the sound. The other turned down the volume. Neither of them were able to participate in any kind of dialogue, because of the noise. I have normal hearing and I couldn't hear Jeff, who was seated right on my knee. Adding some carpet or sound absorbing material on the walls would help. We heard echos from the kitchen, conversations from outside, all bounced off the bare walls. It really brought down the meal, socially. We were served a basket of bread. Some of it was a multigrain and some was a lighter bread. it was served with some butter and a white bean spread. The spread was similar to hummus, but had a bit of parmesan and a hint of garlic. We had one of the wait staff bring us a bit more of it. The food, on the other hand, was absolutely stupendous. Every single bite that I put in my mouth was excellent. I rarely have had meals like this one. We ordered the shrimp and crab cakes appetizer, a salad that had pears in it and a spinach salad with goat cheese and toasted hazelnuts. The spinach salad had a light raspberry vinaigrette, but the goat cheese and hazelnut accents really brought it to a whole new level of flavor. It was rich, but refreshing. Light but with some substance. I was loathe to share it with the table. I didn't partake of the red wine, but the rest of the table polished off the bottle. It was an Italian wine that I hadn't heard of previously. For each round of food, the wait staff would come and bring new utensils and clear out old plates. They were unobtrusive and polite. Our waitress was super intuitive and knew the right kinds of recommendations. I ordered an iced tea well into the meal. As soon as I had finished that glass, a new one replaced it. This, to me, is the ultimate in service. I ordered the halibut, as did Barry . It was served in a light broth with white beans, red peppers and spinach. The halibut was perfectly browned on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. It was a large piece of fish, too! Kara and Deb both ordered the sole. They both were served huge pieces of fish. I tasted a bit of it and it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Jeff ordered the lobster ravioli with scallops. I had a piece of scallop. It was perfectly seasoned and browned, but still juicy. The broth/sauce for his dish was light and flavorful. We tried to figure out what herbs/flavors were used to season it. As if the wonderful food were not enough repast, we ordered two desserts to share. The warm berry custard was sweet, but not too sweet. The chocolate cake with ice cream was delightful. Since we were sharing, neither was too much. Just a taste was all that was necessary, though I would have loved to tackle one of them by myself! The prices were higher than I normally pay, but I also don't often eat food of this caliber often. This was a special treat. We were in last night and the restaurant was 80+ degrees (inside) so it was super uncomfortable the whole time. They need to get their AC situation under control. Had inquired about kids pastas and was told they were under $10. They were $12 ea. We've been so often and I say it all the time. The food is ok but it wasn't worth $200+ for a family of 4. This is by far one of the best restaurants in the island, mainly Italia. The food is phenomenal. Service is with attention to detail, atmosphere is wonderful. We are so glad we came here! Situated in a lively square with galleries, live band and a wrap around front porch, Chesca's packed all the personality we wanted for dinner. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait about 40min to be seated which we didn't mind because we could enjoy a drink in the rocking chairs on the porch. Unfortunately, it took me about 30min to get a drink from the bar because there was only one person behind the bar and a full cocktail menu. Given how packed the restaurant was, I think they could afford another person to help fill the dinners orders while the other serves the patrons at the bar. We did get a table on the porch which was very charming. We ordered a bottle of prosecco and the clam chowder, lobster and crab cake, and the lobster ravioli with seared scallops. Our prosecco never arrived and when we brought that to our waiter, she brought us two glasses on the restaurant... But not until we were almost done with our meal. The clam chowder was thick but not creamy, like they used too much flour. It was flavorful and did have nice chunks of clams but was far from the best we've had. The lobster and crab cake had lumps of meat, fresh and yummy, worth ordering again. However, the main course disappointed as it fell flat on flavor. Although the scallops were seated to perfection, they lacked seasoning and so did the entire dish. All in all, Chesca's wasn't a complete disappointment but I don't think we would be returning. read more

Great deal on a Wednesday night! Farm style food was awesome. The two of us ordered our one entree to split, the chicken marsala with fresh steamed veggies and whipped yukon gold and chive potatoes. It was incredible! Perfect amount of food and great price. The rustico chianti wine is one of our favorites and pairs nicely with this Italian dish. We got there early around 5:30 and dinner took about an hour. We were fortunate to have a nice corner table near the window so we could see the shops and people walking by. Really great atmosphere and wonderful service. You can tell the interior was recently updated and well appointed with higher end dinner ware. While the atmosphere is incredibly loud, we were grateful for a late night table. The service was excellent. Cocktails were yummy. The food was incredibly disappointing. My $38 entree was supposed to have a saffron buerre blanc and mashed potatoes. The saffron was absent and the mashed were replaced with roasted new potatoes lacking in even salt or pepper. The asparagus was so far gone it was yellow, and completely lacking in flavor. Despite the dissatisfaction with the meal, which was not finished, there were no options given to compensate for the lack of satisfaction. read more

I typically don't write reviews but I found this experience especially unacceptable. I ordered the Trio Di Maiale and the pork tenderloin came completely raw on the inside. I know that when cooked properly, pork can be a little pink but as I said, this was completely raw. When I told the server, he initially said he couldn't see it, but afterwards finally brought it back to the kitchen. Although I didn't expect an apology, it was off-putting when he seemingly tried to justify the dish, coming back to say that they would cook it more, but "it was fine" before. Typically in a situation like this, I'd expect the item to be removed from the bill, but not at Chesca's. The rest of the food was fine, but just be careful. read more

We have loved this restaurant for years but it has gone down. It took 45 minutes to get a drink on the deck because they only had one bartender on a Friday in August. The chowder we once looked forward to was so thick it was hard to eat and the entrees were decent but not special. I might give it one more try next summer but maybe not. I had a friend that used to work here but had never eaten there myself. Decided on my anniversary to check it out. It was so freaking good! We were very impressed by everything and I loved the variety of vegetarian options. We had the margarita pizza, the pasta with the tomato cream sauce and the salmon. Chescas is a consistently good choice in Edgartown. The food is always good, and the portions are large. And the waitstaff is attentive, without being cloying. We have been eating here for years and never had a bad meal. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that it is ALWAYS hot in the restaurant. My wife and I ate here because it was attached to the hotel we were staying at (Vineyard Square Hotel and Suites) AND because they could accomodate my wife's Celiac disease. They had a number of meals that either already were gluten free or could be made gluten free. They offered gluten free pasta and even brought out what appeared to be homemade but definately gluten free bread/biscuits. 3 hours later and wife isn't sick which means they knew what they were talking about in serving gluten free. The food was mediocre and would have been fine if the prices weren't so out of line. $16 for a plate of overcooked pasta??? $30 for white clam sauce that I swear they used clams from a can to make. Another mediocre, tourist-trap dining experience on the Vineyard. Wandered in here because of the ambiance but were unpleasantly surprised by the food. Not much crab in the crab cakes. My husband and I had the most spectacular experience at this restaurant over Labor Day weekend. Despite not having any reservations on a Friday evening, we walked into the restaurant and asked if there might be a table for two available. The hostess was incredibly warm and immediately led us to a table in their 'sun room' area - perfect for people watching on the street below. Our waitress and all the service we received here was outstanding. Someone at this restaurant is really paying attention and making sure customers feel like they're...well... welcome! We ordered two glasses of absolutely spectacular wine (great wine list, even by the glass) and each had an appetizer and entree. To start, my husband had a Greek salad and I had the clam chowder - love, love, loved! My husband had the lobster risotto, which he said was very 'summery' and fresh, and I had the lobster ravioli, which was delicious. We had a dessert, as well - something with vanilla ice cream and cake crumbles. Overall, such a warm, inviting and delicious experience. My new favorite in Martha's Vineyard, by far. One additional note - my husband has celiac and they were amazing with this at the restaurant. The waitress knew what my husband could and could not eat, and was very knowledgeable. They even brought him a gluten-free roll in lieu of bread (I will say that this wasn't so great, a bit crumbly, but GF baked goods are hard to perfect!). Will most certainly be back! read more

This place was fabulous as was our server and the food. We ordered a bottle of wine which was fabulous. and appetizer - boyfriend ordered mussels, and I had lobster bisque. The mussels looked and smelled fab even though I didn't have any. The bisque was creamy with a spicy little zing to it with tiny shreds of lobster meat - it didn't even need the big chunks it was so good. When it came time for entrees boyfriend's was dropped off and mine was missing. he ordered some sort of beef i think, with a fabulous sauce on top. My sole picatta, I was told by our waitress, fell when they were taking it out of the window. Which really honestly was no big deal to me as I was happy with the wine, and content after the appetizer. It arrived maybe 10 minutes later, and she apologized for the 3rd time, and I assured her it was fine. She offered to buy us dessert or something which i said was really not necessary. Let me tell you though, the sole was FABULOUS. cooked perfectly, and tasted fresh and lemonly. After finishing we opted to order espresso and I had a sambucca as well. She bought my sambucca and espresso which i thanked her for profusely. We complimented her and the restaurant to the manager who I think may also be the owner. And if we are ever in the area again Chesca's is a must. They had other delicious things on the menu like goat cheese ratatoulle (sp?) and lobster ravioli as well as frutti di mare over pasta. I would have given more stars if our bill hadn't been so poorly (could say worse) handled. Starting at the end - our party of four was charged for five entrees and the special 2 appetizers get one free resulted in a charge for each of the three. It was a reminder to always check your receipts folks! Look, I know it's probably a law to order seafood on MV, but living in Rhode Island, it's not that big a deal for us. That being said, we had a fantastic meal at Chesca's. Tucked down a side street off the main drag, Chesca's is charming and cozy. We started with the pear salad (me) and the lobster cake (him). The salad was wonderful and the cake was very good, just a tad too much breading in the mix. Nice light starters to the main event. Mixed drinks to start were ... good. I had the raspberry tonic? Lots of raspberry flavor, but, and I almost never say this, it needed just a smidge of sweetening. He had the ginger drink. He liked it, I thought it was vile (and I love ginger), very medicinal. Ahh, the main dishes were phenomenal. I had the short ribs. Heaven. Just shear heaven. Meaty, tendy, a bit crusty, mmmmm. Sides (honestly, I could barely tear myself away from that gorgeous meat!) were polenta and sauteed carrots. Hubby had the mushroom gnocchi and cleaned his plate (trust me - this is unusual). Wine with dinner was suggested by our server and was very good. Our server was Italian, very charming and overall very efficient. Dress is basically anything - we were there on a Saturday evening and saw everything from bra tops and biker shorts to casual dressy. One last note. Chesca's is adjacent to a small hotel and shares their downstairs bathroom. To get to it, you have to go back through part of the kitchen/serving area and into the hotel part. Kind of convoluted but in Edgartown, everything is cramped. Parking is on the street. We got lucky and were only 1 street away. We really enjoyed our dinner at Chesca's! read more

My Fiancé and I reserved a table at Chesca's to celebrate us getting engaged that day. We reserved a table at 8pm to go out enjoy a nice meal and celebrate our engagement, of course! We were very nicely greeted and sat inside towards the back, which was fine, however we quickly realized the windows were all shut for a packed restaurant in the middle of July. Only the front door was open. That's uncomfortable in my opinion. We put our drink order in and our waiter told us we should order quickly because he has a big party coming in. That's not my problem, I'm not going to rush through the meal that I'm paying decent money for. Before we got our drinks, the waiter asked if we wanted appetizers, we said we'd like some bread. Before the bread and drinks got there, he asked if we wanted to put our entrées in, we said we weren't ready yet. The waiter seemed to be pacing our table. He barely gave us a chance to look at the menu. Some people enjoy very fast service, on the night my fiancé get engaged, I want to sit for a little while, relax, and enjoy my meal. We were rushed out of this place in HALF AN HOUR. I don't know what was going on but a stressed wait staff is never an enjoyable experience, for anyone. I paid ~$120 for Risotto, Bolognese, a glass of wine, and a beer. Now I understand I'm paying for the atmosphere, the food was decent, but it's pasta and rice with a little bit of veggies and meat. To put things frankly, the atmosphere sucked and was not worth the money. Packed, hot, and everyone, including you, are in a rush. read more

Every last food item was outstanding, from the bread and dip (tuscan white bean -- mmmm) to the Marsala sauce. The lobster ravioli and scallop entree was amazing, a true delight to the senses. Hazelnuts added a glorious crunch and flavor to the dish. The sherry cream sauce was almost drinkable. Chesca's interior is nicer than the surrounding joints. Service is competent, if robotic at times (our waitress appeared to be an extra from The Stepford Wives). But overall, it's a good experience and I'd definitely eat there again. read more

Chesca's is one of my favorite dining places in Edgartown. If it's a late lunch or dressed dinner with a few Edgartown friends the food and people are always good. The food Plating and presentation are well done with all locally grown ingredients. I happened to catch one evening dinner special with a Shirt steak with fingerling sliced potatoes seasoned with a savory sauce. Service is always great even when there are obnoxious tourists who chat loudly on their cell phones, bump your dinner table and show up during dinner hour wearing cutoff pants and flip flops. These are the same people who are rude to the waitstaff and leave a seventy five cent tip on a forty dollar meal. The staff there are very professional and deal with these problems. Chesca's should be one of the restaurants to visit when staying on the Vineyard. read more

Down one of the many streets of Downtown Edgartown is a fantastic Italian restaurant with a delightful New England spin. Chesca's is a piece of al dente dining that you shouldn't miss on Martha's Vineyard. The food is just fantastic. Flatbread pizzas are thin and cheesy. I got their signature Pappardelle Bolognese and it was absolutely outstanding. I nearly cleared my plate and it was a ton of food to begin with. Their homemade pastas are a must get on the first try. I cannot comment on the food of this restaurant as we only had drinks and one appetizer. However, I can comment on the manager working on the evening of 8/24/17 due to the story below. He should be fired immediately for treating patrons the way he treated me. I was sitting with my back to a ledge above my seat that apparently held a candle in a metal candle holder. I apparently leaned back too far and my hair got caught in the holder, which tipped over the candle and pouring hot wax down my hair and down by back. A very tiny portion of my hair got burned as well. A nearby waitress saw what happened and immediately came help. She was lovely, asking me if I was ok and shocked at what happened, even asking if I was burned and did I need help. I went to the restroom to check on myself and thankfully I was physically ok, but my dress was ruined from the wax and huge chunks of my hair was stuck with dried wax. I made it back to my table and told my husband I was fine (dirty, but fine) and planned to continue the meal and wait for our dinner portions. The manager came over and the conversation went like this: Mgr- "What happened?" Me-"My hair got caught in the candle and it tipped over onto me. I got wax all on me" Mgr- "We have had that candle there for 6 months and have never had a problem: Me- "Well, I guess I have big hair then" (trying to make light of the situation) Mgr- "Ok, well we should just like to make clear that we don't believe this to be our fault" Me- "who said it was your fault? Who said it was anybodies fault? Accidents happen" Mgr- "Well the waiter told me you stormed off angry" Me- "I wasn't angry. I went to the bathroom to clean myself up" At this point my husband jumped into the conversation quite upset asking the manage why he was accusing us of being at fault. And telling him that the ONLY thing he should have asked us is "are you ok? What can I do?" The manager NEVER once asked me if I was ok. He was more concerned about ensuring that he got his point across that the restaurant was not at fault. Dear Chesca's- If you put candles on ledges that are head high and in back of patrons and that candle gets stuck in a patrons hair, then you ARE at fault. Because it's YOUR restaurant. And everything that happens in YOUR restaurant is YOUR fault. The safety of your patrons should be #1 priority. But accidents happen. And thankfully it was not more serious and my entire head did not go up in flames. That is how your manager should have reacted. With relief that I was not hurt. With compassion to ensure I was ok and that we would still be able to enjoy a nice dinner. In the end we asked for our check and said we wanted to leave. The manager went to get the check (yup, really went to go get it) but then came back and wisely realized it wasn't worth asking us to hand over $20 in drinks and an appetizer and said it was comped. The nice waitress offered to box up our food but we wanted to just leave. She is the perfect example of how you treat patrons. Not your manager. Fire him. Today. read more

Found this restaurant while walking around and it was a find. My wife and I dined there last night and were very pleased with the food and the service. Our waitress Aubrey told us that they were having "customer appreciation" month, and two of the appetizers were on sale for $5. So we went for the pizzalle (sp?)... a small, flatbread pizza. It was great... a bit spicy and very fresh. For our main course, my wife had the Pappardelle Bolognese. It was cooked perfectly. I had the Spinach and Roasted Garlic Tortolini. Delicious! The wine list was good, and my wife reported that the pomegranate martini was wonderful. We will be back! read more
