Then it took two days to speak with a vet who wasn't even the same vet that examined my dog. Also, after I got a second opinion from another vet that was different than theirs, they wouldn't help me understand why and basically hung up the phone on me. Dr. Kesting's practice was disappointing. During our phone call, I felt dismissed and even gaslighted when trying to share my concerns about my experience at the Chester Valley. What bothered me more was my partner's experience when picking up our kitten. The receptionist's rude comments and the staff's frantic behavior due to the diagnosis of FCV were concerning. We had no idea our kitten had this virus based on the symptoms it was showing (which we were upfront about on the phone when scheduling a drop-off appointment, and we will seek a second opinion elsewhere. There was also a charge for medication that was not appropriate for our kitten's age, which I was reimbursed for. After witnessing unprofessional treatment, alarmist customer service, and dysfunction, we will not be returning to this practice for our animals' needs. I would NOT recommend this practice to my family or friends. read more

I absoultley love this clinic, the staff and the amazing vets. My personal dogs have been coming for years as well as the 100's of rescue dogs that come through my rescue. The communication and pricing is spot on. They are compassionate to not only my personal dogs but to every single rescue dog I have brought in, and they aren't always the easiest to handle. We come here because of its proximity to our house. I don't have much else to say about their processes other than they don't value owners time. We're "encouraged" to check-in online due to COVID. Once we arrive, we're supposed to call and let them know we're here. It took 45 minutes from the time I notified them I was here till they came and took my dog for a simple vaccination update and spa day. My reviews of this place have been mixed. Initially we received great service and care here. We really liked at least one of the vets. They gave great advice on helping us acclimate our dogs from Florida to Alaska. Then we had a visit where our dog, who had an ear infection, was uncooperative and growled a little. Immediately we were asked why he was so aggressive. That seemed a little obvious, but we rolled with it. They provided care, charged a fair price and sent us on our way. Today, unfortunately, they lost our business. Both my wife and I have crazy schedules. We knew that CV had walk in hours on Saturdays. Just to be sure, we called to confirm two days before. We give our dog (a wonderful shelter dog with anxiety) a medication that makes the vet visit go easier. It requires us to get up early and see the vet in a window of time. When we showed up at the clinic there was a sign on the door. "Closed for Maintenance". Why weren't we informed when we called before? Our dog needed to see a vet, so we called another place. Today I walked into the office where I was instantly told to wear a mask by a non-mask wearing staff member...she explained that its for my safety, "because all of our children have covid." Well as a medical professional-you all should quarantine and then mask, I am not sick, nor is my dog..nope I don't need a mask! Humans or dogs...have some common sense! Have taken my two dogs to Chester Valley for last few years. Unfortunately our Siberian Husky had to be put down after a 3rd bout with cancerous growths, but the Staff was great with the process. We had him for 13 years so he was obviously part of the family. Our pug gets the best care here. From health check ups to nail trims and spa days. The staff here are fantastic. I have been a customer here for about 2 years, and they have treated my dog well. Over time, the service from the Vets - not the vet techs - has declines. They seem to want to work with clients and always give varying degrees of services/treatments to fit the owners budget, which is great! But, and it's a big BUT, over time a veterinary doctor began talking over me when I was speaking and/or voicing my concern over something. They pretend to hear me, but I can tell they already have a canned statement ready to go instead of listening to my concerns. I wish I could say it was just one time, but unfortunately it has happened on multiple occasions. It boiled over today, when I was on the phone trying to wrap my head around my dog getting recurring urinary infections, and Dr. Tobiason told me at this time it looks like it is caused by anxiety.... multiple infections for which your clinic prescribed antibiotics, seriously? So when I tried voicing my concern, and about to agree to move forward with additional exams just to rule out other things, Tobiason continued to talk over me and not let me finish my thought. The one vet that actually does let you finish speaking is Dr. Kesting - so thanks. I will now be looking for another vet to take care of my fur baby. Edit: I was just forwarded the vet notes from today's visit. Tobiason wrote that I became "irate" when I asked her to stop talking over me. What a joke. Very poor service manager. She has been abusive towards me when I had problems such as being exposed to someone that had COVID she refused me service. I would not take a dying animal to their location. After posting my comments on Neighbor Nextdoor, over a dozen people have told me that their pets died because of wrong doings at this place. They overcharged, bill for services which were not agreed upon and have a very negative attitude towards other. They take the animal away from you now and bring it in... to their clinic.... You have no idea what they are doing if they are making it sick so that can make more money. Very greedy people. The manager said I threatened her in an email was the reason she denied me service. As pet owners we know that our fur babies can cost us a pretty penny when it comes to their healthcare. That being said, I want to make it perfectly clear that our negative experience with Chester Valley is not solely based on the cost of their services. Facility: Facility is clean. They offer coffee, tea and water in the waiting area. Staff: Reception had great customer service. Very helpful and welcoming. Vet tech: Seemed to have no education pertinent to her job. She had an attitude and we felt that were an inconvenience to her. Vet Doctor: She was very lovely, straightforward and informative. Costs: We are visiting from out-of-state and know that in Alaska costs are generally higher here. This clinic is on the higher end for pricing. Blood pressure is 36.00. Nail clipping is 20.00. Grooming costs are CRAZY high. Make sure to call ahead and ask for prices if that is a concern to you. The parking lot is not big enough for customers. We were blocked in by 3 vehicles and when we asked for assistance in locating the owners so that we could leave we were told that they were staff vehicles and where we parked "is just not a good place to park." (Then put some signs up indicating where you'd like your customers to park). Instead of being happy to help, the staff members that moved their cars so we could get out rolled their eyes at us and had no problem complaining about where we parked our loud so we could hear them. I've been loyal to this animal hospital for a long time. When Dr. Harmon was here the staff was great and they took such good care of my old dog roscoe and were able to squeeze me in when I really needed it. Now they have new staff and my perspective is completely changed. They have zero empathy for their customers or the animals. I tried to get an appointment for forever and finally got one. I was 7 minutes late because to my understanding it was at 2:20 and not 2:10. I didn't receive a phone call or anything when i didn't show up at the expected time and now of course they're booked back up. I'm leaving for vacation and they entirely screwed up my day. I should've read the reviews before I even went. I wish I could rate lower then a one if I could. Do not come for a "walk-in". I'm totally disgusted by the lack of professionalism. They do "walkins". I've tried to come in 3days for a "walkin". First day came 2 pm for a walkin to be told walkins last till 4 pm but they can't take my pet in because they're at MAX capacity which doesn't make sense if they start walk ins at 2 pm... second day I called to see if I can come in for a "walkin". They rudely said I can't because of the same reason they said the day before. 3rd day decided to call at 11am and finally thru said I can come in but there's people in line already . When I came in I saw no one there it was completely empty. I texted and checked in with the form they make you fill out on website. I texted and checked myself in. I patiently wait in the parking lot with my kittens in the car for 4HOURS, 4 hours. I get a call after me waiting in the car for that long with my kitten saying they can't help me now and to come back at 6am..... My whole life I haven't experienced such disgust for a "veterinarian clinic" in my life. That was so unprofessional and that should never pass in a real business. On Friday May 19, my husband noticed that our golden retriever Buddy's mouth was bleeding and that he had chipped his tooth. Knowing that infection was a possibility and that the weekend was coming, we decided to give Chester Valley Vet another chance after a previous poor experience. My husband called Chester Valley Vet to inquire about walk in hours and left to take Buddy. When he arrived, he was checked in and sent back to the exam room. After about 10 minutes, the office manager went into the exam room and informed my husband that until we took down a previous poor review (see below), they would not treat Buddy. They were more concerned about the removal of the previous review than treating Buddy's chipped tooth. Furthermore, we were never informed that treatment of Buddy would be based on the removal of said previous review. Although Chester Valley did rectify the original wrong charges and apologize, I did not feel comfortable removing my original review. In fact, in reply to my original review, Chester Valley said and I quote " ....We sincerely hope you and Buddy continue to come and see us." How can this be anything but black mail? My husband and Buddy were asked to leave the Veterinary Office unless we removed the previous review. What does that have to do with Chester Valley treating the issue at hand, which was Buddy's tooth? Again, I am so disappointed cannot recommend this vet because clearly their priority is not the care and well being of your pet. **Original Review on April 26, 2016** Beware of ridiculous hidden fees and unclear answers!! I've never felt so passionate about leaving a poor review. I have taken my golden retriever to Chester Valley for the past year. Today I had an appointment for him to get updated on his bordatella shot. When I arrived, I also asked to have his ears cleaned. I was then given a price quote and the quote included an exam fee. When I asked why, the vet tech told me that it was required for all appointments, even if you have been seen within the last year (which ended up being false). I always thought it was optional. After thinking on it more, I inquired as to why this was a requirement. She told me that he would need a health exam every time I wanted to have his ears cleaned! Later, the story changed and I was told I had to pay for the exam because my dog needed his ears cleaned even though I expressed ZERO concern over his dirty ears. I even stated that they get dirty easily ever since he was a puppy. The vet tech basically told me that I should've made it super clear that I only needed a shot and an ear cleaning and I wouldn't have been charged a health exam fee. I DEFINITELY made that super clear. I will not be coming back to this vet. If you are thinking about bringing your pets here, save yourself the headache and just don't. If for some crazy reason you decide to bring your pets here, be sure to pull out your wallet for all sorts of insane fees and be sure to make your needs "super clear" so you don't get charged a $54 health exam fee for a $21 shot and $28 ear cleaning. Further, I had to pay an additional $15 because it took more than one person to have his ears cleaned, making the ear cleaning ordeal a whopping $43!! After expressing my concerns to the vet tech and the vet, their stories for the health exam fee didn't match up. It seemed like as soon as I walked in the door, I was going to be charged that health exam fee no matter what. This place is a complete ripoff. The fees are ridiculous and there are no redeeming qualities. I am so disappointed and will not return. read more

Chester Valley takes the nickle and dime you up to a whole new level. When I made a call to ask about having our dog neutered I was immediately met with "Would you like us to do blood work for $42?" I asked what was included in the blood work, they said "oh, we do a whole panel" When I brought him in on that unfortunate day the first thing they asked was "would you like to do blood work for $42?" and I hesitantly accepted. They would not give me the results of the blood work. They have no concern for their patients or owners, it is all about how they can ring you up for more and more charges. read more

Cat took off, dodging kennel, we not only called ahead and said he did, but fully explained when making appointment he might do this, AND asked for advice on how to schedule. A no show fee of a whopping $76 was not agreed upon or mentioned at anytime. They take a walk-in when there's a no show so they aren't losing profit. They were fully informed of the situation and advised the appointment. Total set-up. I said, "Clearly profit before care and customer service, not to mention flatly misleading customers toward incurring cost" Sad, this place used to be so great...others have had bad service here recently, too. We take all of our pets (two dogs, cat, and chickens) to Chester Valley. We absolutely love Dr K and Dr H! They are kind and compassionate and genuinely care for our animals. They take the time to answer all of our questions - whether in the office or by phone. Sure, we may have to wait a little while but we are understanding because we know they are very busy giving the best care possible to everyone they see. And they are always good about explaining all of our options to us so we can make the best decisions possible for our animals' health. We previously had taken one of our dogs to another vet in town and ended up switching to Chester Valley. The other vet was like going to a business: they were trying to see as many clients per day and we rarely got to talk to the vet more than a few minutes. We don't feel that way at all at Chester Valley. We feel welcomed and valued every time we visit and never feel rushed out of the office. We appreciate the opportunity to use their walk-in hours for last minute or unexpected issues. It means we don't need to find another vet clinic and can go to our regular beloved vets. But we also know that walk-in hours can get hectic with everyone else also capitalizing on the opportunity, so we know to be patient when using them and plan to give ourselves extra time, just in case. Reading many of the reviews on here, I'm honestly surprised. There are complaints about expense and having been to two other vets in town, we don't find Chester Valley to be any more expensive than the other places we've been. And if Dr K is refusing service to anyone, I suspect it's because they were particularly disrespectful or belligerent and I wouldn't blame her one bit. She's been nothing but professional with us and everyone we've recommended Chester Valley to and we have observed her run her business with the highest integrity. Chester Valley is also a generous community member. They often donate packages to silent auctions for good causes and we've seen them preparing backpacks of donated goods for non-profits serving our list vulnerable populations in town. We can't recommend Chester Valley enough. We feel so fortunate to have vets and staff who care so much for our animals. read more

Not recommended! Staff is low skilled / under trained and "Karen" is working at the desk. The Dr. was great, the staff provided an incredibly inefficient process. The walk in wellness exam per their website is based on a "waiting list." I didnt have a mask they require to use the lobby so I used the curb side service offered for the walkin exam which really is not available because it is based on a waiting list kind of like appointments but could get me in because of a canceled appointment! Huh. During my wait they called 4 times to repeat the same information from three different people including the Dr. Estimates for vaccines and or exams are given in a price range because if a tech needs to "hold" your pet it is an additional charge and wont know what the final cost will be until complete. So, "Karen" calls to ask how I would like to pay which wasnt in the price quote range with or without holding assisitance. But whatever, I requested the most efficient way to pay cash or card, "Karen" instructs me inside to pay with cash that a mask is no longer required becase there is glass between me and her "Karen". I appreciate how they talk through all the pricing, answer all my questions and let me make my own informed decision. I do not recommend this place. Very suspicious billing. Petco suggested this place as their cat groomer is no longer doing cat-grooming, until they get a new cat groomer. We took our long-haired cat there every 6 months to get a lion cut and grooming, and paid around $150 for this every time. We moved from Seattle three years ago, and she would get mobile grooming in Seattle every 4 to 6 months as well. She never once needed sedation and the Petco groomer told us they loved her and they would be happy to groom her anytime. My husband literally was there and saw her contentedly being groomed on a table at Petco grooming next to a dog. So we decided to check Chester Valley Vet clinic out because they are conveniently close to where we live. About two hours after we dropped her off they called and said that she was going to require sedation and extra charges for labor and oxygen. I explained that she has been groomed many times at different groomers and this has never been required and she's never had problems and asked them to try first without. Within about 30 minutes they called back and said that if we wanted to proceed it would require sedation. When I had asked for cost estimates, I was told low-end $200 for no sedation and a vaccine update, and up to $345 with sedation and extra costs. Long story short, because we felt we were over a barrel and she needed grooming we went with it, and when I went to pick her up, they had added on an extra $20 because they said she needed three sets of hands instead of just two. I asked for further explanation and the front desk gal said that was a question for the vet tech in the back and they would ask them to come out, but they never did. The front desk gal just came back out and told me our cat was just really really scared. Also, compared to her prior lion shaves, it looked pretty crappy. So either these people are just really incompetent, or cagey liars or both, but it is really too bad because we were looking for a regular groomer and would have gone regularly in the future if this had gone well. I see there are other very mixed reviews on them as well. Good luck to everybody who tries them out. read more

This clinic is out to price gouge you with fees! We used them for a health certificate for our dog to travel to Mexico. They first tried to get us to use a 7001 form (the most expensive) but then I called the USDA vet who needs to sign that form and she said there was an easier cheaper one that is just a letterhead. So she sent the forms to the clinic and they used that. After they then charged us $250.00. I called around to 2 other offices which would have charged $90 and $120. I called to ask them if we were mischarged and they said it was a fair price. They stated that it was because their staff needs to do research and fill out the forms (which we were the ones who told them about the new form). The total visit time was 30min and they claim the 4 page document deserves 250!!! We also had our dog neutered there and they "sold" us on doing bloodwork at the same time while he was out. Then then never called us with the results to inform us of this $50 service. They are horrible! read more

Gave my families cat Revolution mite medication which is highly known to kill dogs and cats (google it) My cat had a stroke in their care and they didn't even notice, take care of him, or tell us. The entire staff at Chester Valley is caring, engaged, and responsive. I've brought my two giant goofy cats and my athletic little dog to them for the past several years for everything from kitty dental surgery to acupuncture for my dog. All of my animals' health and quality of life has improved with each visit. My dog just LOVES coming in to this office-everyone is always so good to him there! Further, both Dr. Kesting and Dr. Harmon are great to talk to and can offer clear, helpful advice. All of the techs are friendly and easy to talk to as well; it's nice being around so many people who care so much about animals. I also have nothing but good things to say about the business side of this practice. Their prices are fair, and based on my experience with veterinary care here and the lower 48, on the generous side of comparable.They make a point to go through all costs up front, before proceeding. Also, honestly, I think it's worth paying a fair price for these vets and their staff, all of whom take the time and make the effort to give my animals such good care. read more

I cannot recommend Dr. Kesting and her staff more highly. I have a 15-year-old dog who has moved all over the country with me, so we've seen a lot of vets. Dr. Kesting is, hands down, the best. What distinguishes her is her combination of medical competence, people skills, and animal love. She's great with my dog, and she's also great with me. She's very good about keeping me appraised of the situation and explaining things in as much detail as I want. She is also affordable and sensitive to the kinds of cost-benefit decisions that pet owners have to make. Muldoon is a bit of a haul for me from west Anchorage, but it's totally worth it. Went in to get my dog euthanized (she is 13 years old and has severe skin issues) I went to another vet and got an estimate of about $900 and I would be the only one paying for it out of my family (I'm 20 years old who has an 11 month old daughter and works full time) due to these circumstances me and my family decided to put her down and this was a very hard decision. We took her in on Christmas Eve walk in hours they were okay until they took her back for her IV Dr Kesting then came in and started questioning me and my family's decision asking us questions why we chose to do this, we explained to her that she is an old lady who itches her skin all day and we hate to see her suffer and it was a hard decision and we love her, without asking what we would like to do they started getting medication saying it was fixable at this point me and my grandmother were confused and upset and told them we had to talk to my mom before anytbing they still continued to find medications for us. At this point I have work in 15 minutes and my daughter has to be at daycare and I ask for the Docotor she comes in and I explain the time being a problem and she smirked and said "wel they are typing as fast as they can" at this point me and my grandmother got upset because the whole expierence we were not involved and they were rude. THEN they charge me for an exam fee that they never told me about !!!!!!!! I never saw my dog get "examed" and never asked nor did they ask me to exam her, and then today 12/27 they call my workplace instead of the two numbers I have and complain to my boss !!!!!!!!!!! I've been (and my Mom) taking our dogs to Chester Valley since I was a kid. We had to put my beloved Husky to sleep at the age of 15 back in 1999... We cried and the staff cried with us. They later sent a card with a clipping of his tail ... That meant to much to us. I still have it! The previous owner/Vet, during a checkup, told me my Pomeranian puppy had a bad knee and needed knee surgery... Around $3000. I was floored and guilt stricken as I couldn't afford that as a poor college kid. Long story short, maybe we were lucky, but he has never had knee problems. Fast forward to 2013 and my now 9 year old Pomeranian decided to show off his beautiful stride and ran out in front of a SUV and was hit. We scooped him up and drove to Chester Valley. They saw us right away, explained they thought he might have a shattered pelvis and had to wait as he was in shock ... Everyone there really seemed to care and were very sympathetic and kind. The new Vet/owner (forgive me I can't recall her name) was upfront and explained everything in terms big dummies like me could understand :). After the x-rays were taken I asked about his knees - they were perfect! He made a quick recovery and one of the Vet Techs stayed with him the whole time - Oh, and no shattered pelvis but his right hip was dislocated. Pom 1 - Two ton SUV 0 !! Last winter I surprised my husband with a Siberian and Chester Valley is his place, of course. I was so happy to see that they were opening a pet boarding area! (How great is it to see a locally owned small business expand?!) We had a trip planned so I arranged his stay. I brought him down with our toddler (those two are BFFs) and when they took him back to the kennels my little toddler FREAKED OUT screaming for her puppy .. I was so embarrassed and felt like the worst Mom in the world!! LOL. A couple workers came out (you couldn't NOT hear her wailing) and told her they'd take good care of her puppy. So sweet! I don't know how the prices compare to other places but the kind things they do mean a lot to our family and they will have our business for life! read more

We started bringing our puppy here the week we got her. She was 8 weeks old. We loved this place. A bit expensive. The vet was the owner of the place and she was really caring with her. We continued bringer her here for regular check ups and her ear exams and meds. But we always found it to be expensive. One night in the middle of the night, she broke her leg. After an awful experience with Diamond Animal Hospital (I reviewed them on Google) I brought her here to her regular place, Chester Valley. I didn't think I would have such a horrible experience here. We brought her here for an xray that she needed, so we can have it ready for the surgeon, which was $200, then we took her home and recieved a phone call stating that they needed to take the cast off to take another xray. After the xray, she would need to be recasted. That would be another charge. So we questioned the tech what was wrong with the xray and we wanted to speak with the doctor/owner. She took our call. She repeated what the tech said. We were still unsure what was wrong with the xray and she said xrays couldnt really see well through casts. This didnt seem right because we just had an xray taken earlier that day with Diamond and the bone was completely visible. Then it dawned on us: the owner was taking us for a ride. She wanted us to pay another $200 for another xray then recast fee. Of course, this is something to be alarmed of. The conversation got tense because of our questions so the owner hung up on us. Wow!! We called back assuming we got disconnected but the receptionist said the owner could no longer help us nor our pet and she didnt want to speak with us because we were yelling at her, which wasnt true. This was a slap on the face. How could this business be happy with us when we blindly give them money for services and now that we had questions and needed a reason for unnecessary services, the owner shuts us out. This woman does not care about animals nor their parents. She wants money, money, money. Take your pets elsewhere. She wanted to scam us but we questioned her and she wasnt having it. What is more upsetting is that we returned for our pet's file so we can take it to another clinic and the vet was in the back basically hiding. Its a shame that clinics like these are open. They arent cheap so the services and attitutes should be in check. I hope the owner contacts me to at least appologize for wanting to take advantage of people who are in a bind with their pets. But thanks to this experience, we found the best animal clinic in Anchorage: Alaska Veterinary Clinic. Better doctors with more compassion and they are cheaper. Be careful, Your first appointment will be far cheaper than any other. After that OUCH! This is the most expensive vet I've ever been to... I also had a question about one of the meds that were recommended for my dog as he once had a bad reaction, the Vet tech was clearly annoyed with the question, she began to answer me when it was clear she was side tracked and I did not get an actual answer. I asked if I could speak to the vet first (Shannon Kesting) the vet tech (now even more side tracked and now odiously irritated stated in a sarcastic voice (no problem) When Shannon Kesting came in the room she was clearly irritated as well, I had not even had a chance to ask her or tell her of my concern when she (speaking down to me) as if I were a child. said what she had said to me earlier in the the exam without even considering my concern, WOW! I will not let Shannon Kesting or any of her revolving door of part time employee's touch my dogs again. For a clinic that charges between 1/3 to 1/2 as much more for every procedure than every other vet your professionalism and staff need to be top tier. No professionalism at all. had a dispute in their quality of grooming. After paying more than dubble than anywhere else, and my wife coming home in tears, I tried to talk with them. They told me they would give a partial refund to try to make things right, so I went their and was told "to find a new vet because we have a distrusting relationship". Wow because I called them out on a job not well done. I have used several different vet and never been treated this way. I will no longer give them any business. And hope you do the same. read more

Don't get me wrong, the staff there was nice but the service wasn't good. I scheduled my kitty for a grooming and I told them beforehand that my cat doesn't like grooming and asked them if they can give mild sedation. They said yes then they assured me that my cat will be fine. I was waiting for any update regarding my cat but never got any calls from them so I decided to give them a call. When they said that my cat was ready to be picked up, it sounded like everything went well. WELL IT DIDN'T!! When I got there they told me my cat was not happy and the sedation didn't work yet, when I came to see him, he was only HALF SHAVED!! My poor boy looked like a stray cat! Not only that, they charged me almost $230 for a half-shaved service! They told me that if the sedation didn't work, they would not proceed with the grooming. Now, my cat is coming off the sedation and, he's growling like he's ready to kill somebody and looking like a used mop!!! So thank you Chester Valley Veterinary, good job!!!!!! read more

Worst place in Anchorage. When Dr. Thomas owned it, it was the best, but now, with Dr. Kesting. It is the worst! They almost killed my dog due to a botched surgery. When we tried to go back the next day because we knew something was wrong, they did not have a Vet on staff and we had to go to the ER. $1800 later, our dog's surgery was corrected. When we met with Dr. Kesting she did not even say she was sorry, nor did she offer to reimburse us her fees, nor the ER fees. She just told us to walk. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET IF YOU VALUE THEIR LIFE!! You would be better off doing the surgery on your own, in back alley, with a blunt knife. read more
