refused inspection twice. First saying need come before 3pm. Second time coming before 3pm still refuse to do state inspection.

Been going to Chestnut Motors for years. Our son returned from college a couple of weeks ago with his 2007 Honda Element LX AWD 5sp manual. It was not staying in second gear. "Here we go again", I thought. Best case scenario, I was thinking maybe a synchro. Worst case, full tranny rebuild!! Despite a busy and hot day, Paul graciously said I could swing by so he take a quick look to see what we're dealing with. To make a long story very short, it turned out when the car needed a new battery up at school (in VT, and the only shop in town was the Honda Dealership), they did not put the battery holder back on and the long bolt that holds the battery fell over and prevented the shifter to fully engage second gear. UGH!!! This is from the dealership, no less!! Big shout-out to these guys! I was about 20 miles from home at an appointment in Newton. My low tire pressure warning light had come on en route to appointment. After finishing appointment I googled for nearest mechanic, rode over to Chestnut Motors and explained my plight, asking if there was any chance they could check my tires and add air as needed as I was worried about making it back home to my mechanic. I believe it was the owner I spoke with who said no problem, had the tech/mechanic pull my car right into a bay and in no time at all checked and filled 4 tires, which apparently were ALL low. Been going to chestnut motors for years now and they are highly recommended. It's the only place I go to get my car serviced. They always do a good job servicing my car to make sure it runs great. I have a 2010 Honda Civic and for 12 years my car has not had any major issues. It's all due to the care and excellent service provided hear. One thing to note is that they are very busy. My wife went to another place for inspection and clearly they looked at her as a middle aged asian woman and got $$ in their eyes. That other place failed her inspection for "soft brakes" and tried to charge 1.5h just to diagnose (but then when I refused that, they suddenly didn't have time to change the tires on my truck). Brought the car to Chestnut motors, they checked it and found the brakes were just fine. $57 for re-inspection to get the sticker and 2 bulbs. The owner was patient and answered my questions and this will help better judge what people tell me about brakes in the future. 100% A+ read more

Are you kidding me?? How did I now know about this place before? My Mini failed inspection due to a leaky exhaust. Getting new factory parts for a Mini is never a budget-friendly endeavor. Rather than shell out the $1700 it would have been for a whole new exhaust system, Paul said he could just cut off the front part that had the leak, replace it, and weld the back part back on. $400. No-brainier. What's more is that it was done the same day in just over two hours. Now my Mini is super quiet (boo) but the State of Massachusetts is happy about that and I can keep motoring. They are so impolite and arrogant when I walk in and ask if they can do car inspection.they said they need 35mins to do inspection and they are about to close so they couldn't do it. I called shortly after Chestnut bought out Parker Levine auto (previous shop at this location) about having a sensor replaced in my car, after checking my own engine codes with an inexpensive device that any child could purchase off of Amazon and plug into their car. I then bought the replacement part that I needed, after confirming my issues. This is something many people that know about their car do. When I called, they were aggressively rude and told me that nobody would help because it's not their parts and it's my own diagnosis, so it's wrong. I was hardly given a chance to talk, and the man with a very heavy accent was entirely unhelpful and rude. They were visibly upset that somebody else might know what was wrong with their own car, and that they weren't going to be able to rip me off. If you're looking for someone to be rude to you, overcharge for parts & labor, all while delivering poor service, this is the shop for you. read more

I took my 2014 Audi Q5 to the dealership for an engine warning light check and the repair quote was $$$$ + VAT for a spare part costing $276 ... so I called Paul at Chestnut Motors to get a second opinion. He booked my car in for an inspection appointment, and said I could drop the car off on the Monday evening for a Tuesday 8am appointment, during which he confirmed the diagnosis, replaced the problematic part and carried out another diagnostic check and my car was ready the same day at midday. The final bill was a third of that $$$$ dealership quote. It's not all about the money though; it's the value of mutual respect, transparency, fairness and competence all wrapped in a great local business. read more

I've use Chestnut Motors for a number of cars that I've owned. From oil changes and simple (and not so simple) exhaust installs, to a complete rebuild of my brakes and suspension. The owner and staff are always friendly. The work is always well done, and in a timely manner. They go over why a repair is necessary, how it will be performed, and afterwards, are more than willing to answer questions about how it went. They will even show you old parts taken out of your car. They were even honest enough to tell me that I didn't need a repair the dealer insisted I needed. The cost is what it is. They don't use cheap parts, often opting for OEM. And labor is a typical ~$90/HR. The $90/HR gets you certified techs. They also have always only charged me actual time spent, instead of rounding up, or using some made up number. read more
