Stopped by mid-week few weeks back on my lunch break, around 1.15 pm with breaks squeaking. After a quick inspection was told I needed disks and pads and all 4 wheels, a complete break job. No surprise. Was told to leave the car and they will call me back. I left the car at the shop around 1.30 pm. 2 pm, 3 pm pass, no calls. I get my coworker to drive me back to the shop. We get there at 3.50 pm. The car is outside looks like done. I walk inside and the guy tells me it's all set, here is the bill $800!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I asked why no one called, he said 'they were very busy'. In disbelieve, I asked why so much, can I have a discount, etc. No to all. And I leave. Only when I get home I realize that I have been basically robbed of $300. I look at the bill and see that the parts total around $400 which is crazy for a 9 yo Saab that shares the brakes with GM cars. Then I look and according to the bill, they have charged me for over 4 hours of labor!!!!!!!!!!!!! (BTW, on their website it says $90/h). My car was there from 1.30-3.45 pm. So even if they worked on it nonstop that's 2 h max!! So, I literally was taken! To add to the excitement: I get home and look at the wheels to check the disks/pads and the see that both front caliper retaining spring are just dangling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was able to remove/push them in with my hands (and you usually need a huge screwdriver to move them). I went back the next morning and the guy tells me 'oh, sorry, we put them in the wrong side'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From here, you make your decision whether to come here or not. read more

Paul is pretty prickly about providing good service. He clearly wants long-term customers, happy to tell you what needs to be done now, what needs to be done soon, and what's just a "nice to have." Will work with you to find better pricing on parts. Understands we want 250K miles out of our car, which is now at 170 and runs like a top (I mean, German, AWD, twin-turbo V-6, blue book of $4K, you'd run it into the ground, too, right?). It rarely takes more than one visit (we use lots of mechanic time, the Subaru has 100k miles on it as well). He's so proud he gets offended if you remind him to check the fluids and such, it's sort of cute. Plus, he (good South African that he is) instructed me on the use of the vuvuzela, which I think may be driving the guy in the front of the store right out of his mind. Only downside: the word's out, dont expect to drive in and get worked on right away unless it is a real emergency (no, not the "boss is in town tonight" kind). I hope he's doing well financially, because he's smart, hard-working, and honest. read more

Recently I needed a tire replaced, it was back on my car and balanced in less than a half hour. When I needed some more extensive work on my exhaust system, we arranged a convenient day and Paul provided a loaner for me. How many independent mechanics do that? My 2006 Infiniti has nearly 130,000 miles on it, and I am confident that Paul can keep it on the road until I finally get tired of driving it. read more

I would recommend Chestnut Motors to anyone. I own three cars, all of which I bring to be serviced there. Paul re-built the engine in my Porsche 9-11, and it has never been running smoother. He has always gone out of the way to give good service. When we have had to leave the car overnight for repair, he drove me home, and then picked me up when the car was ready, truly superb service! I would say the only bad thing is that it is hard to get drive in service, you have to call to make an appointment in advance. DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I brought my car in for an inspection. They failed me because of my suspension and tried bullying me into getting it fixed there. Good thing I refused. I brought it to a Pepboys and they told me there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with my car, that they were trying to get money out of me and I should bring it somewhere else to get inspected.
