It seems like the more recent reviews on yelp for this particular establishment represent negative experiences by patrons, most of whom went into use the bathroom and didn't bother to buy anything. When you gotta go, you gotta go I guess... But in fairness to the owners and employees, this is a gas station/convenience store... Not a public restroom facility. In sleepy little Independence, I have to imagine this place relies on mostly weary travelers stopping in for gasoline, a couple of sodas, a bag of snacks to make a living. Whether there is a sign or not, it's kind of courteous to scrape under the seats for a little bit of change, and buy a pack of gum or a Coke or something. Wish the proprietor a very nice rest of the day, kind of thing. As far as the guy behind the counter being rude, I sure cannot condone that either. You may have heard the expression, "the customer is always right"?... Well that ain't true, but the customer is still and always the customer. As a business owner, if you smile and nod at that guy that just went in and use $.50 with the toilet paper and paper towels, and did not buy anything... This time... They're probably more likely to stop in here on the downhill trip and buy something. Act like a troll to a potential future customer? They will not ever be one. Just saying... Anyway, we stopped here on the way home from Lake Crowley, to top off the tank on a very busy southbound 395 post-July 4 weekend drive. We bought a couple of bottles of soda, and a pack of jerky. No more expensive than just about any other gas station I've been to. My kids used the heck out of the bathroom, too. The fellow behind the counter was not saccharine sweet or anything, but cordial. Funny thing about the small-town business folk: they respond awfully well to common courtesy with a dash of kindness. Come to think of it, most people do. I also appreciated the relatively large parking lot and plenty of room to turn around with a small trailer. Some of the gas stations in towns up and down the 395 don'tfeature as much space. Don't go here to get gas ever!!! 2/21/20 10:15 pm I've never been to a gas station where I've had such issues. I entered my Vons number to get my discount per gallon as I always do, and then put my card in and entered the area code. Then I clicked the gas I wanted and placed the nozzle into the car only for the screen to display the message "replace nozzle and see cashier". What does that even mean? I went in and asked the guy and he had no idea what I was talking about. He came out and canceled my transaction. He "took care of it" I filled my car and he told me to come in and pay. So I did only for him to tell me my card has been declined. I just used it a couple of hours prior. So now I'm mad and confused. The other person in the car paid for the gas and realized we never got the Vons discount! That irritates me because I told the guy about the Vons discount and he said "he put it in". Which now talking to the other person about how much she paid we didn't get it. I called customer service regarding my card and it was cancelled. I'm not sure what happened but I am confused. I've driven this highway hundreds of times and I've never had that issue before. I'm not happy that this happened and it all comes down to this gas station for the "replace nozzle see cashier" message on the display. That's were it all went down. The guy at the front was hard to understand and couldn't discuss much with him which also complicated things. Never stopping at this chevron again. read more

Cleanest restrooms in the whole stretch, an awesome selection of fairly-prices snacks and drinks (I haven't tried their milkshake machine, but it beckons me every time), and very friendly folks behind the counter. Whenever I drive up the 395 I always make it a point to stop by this gas station. Why you may ask? The people that work here are always nice! The younger guy with a beard who works here remembers who you are. Even though I came to shop here once the year before he asked how everything was in LA was and if I needed another fishing license like before. I know it's just a gas station but the owners here are super awesome and willing to talk! When traveling and sleeping in my car solo in the Sierras and Mono County, I knew after a few days that there would always be a hot shower here. Yes they sell showers here to travelers and those of us not keen to paying $60-70 a night just for a bed. read more

The owners here make this place great. They are both helpful and seem to enjoy working here, and that makes a difference to me. The Subway always does a great job and unless you're here at noon straight up (It's one of only a couple places in town to eat), the wait isn't usually too bad. read more

Independence Chevron has really updated and improved their store! So many more options for snacks and drinks! Not to mention, the new Port of Subs which has opened up right next door and is sooooo good!! Definitely a great place to stop in!! read more

Not the quality Chevron Gas Station I've known and am accustomed to. Pumped gas then stopped in for a soda and snack. I was looking for a Diet Mountain Dew but they don't carry it. Started looking for a snack and noticed no prices on anything. I asked the owner about prices and he started yelling at me in broken English. I started to leave and noticed a basket of rotten (black) bananas for sale by the cash register. I told him to look at the basket, that they were rotten and he through up his hand and told me to leave the store. Rude, Rude, Rude. I will never go back. I will tell all my friends about that Chevron station. read more

We needed more ice and firewood and this is the only grocery store in Independence. You have no other choice unless you want to drive 20 minutes. Luckily, they have most everything you need, including a place to shower. I didn't use it, but it was good to know it was there ;) read more

The man with the accent DOES NOT know how to count his money. He confused himself and the system. We asked to pump $25 worth of gas and bought $9 worth of snacks and those two were supposed to be rung up as separate transactions but of course he did them as one. We gave him a $30 bill for the gas and asked for him to pump $25!!! And then gave him a $50 bill to pay for the snacks that were $9. He gave me $40 back but he owed us $5 because we only asked for $25 worth of gas. We just said whatever and continued to pump our gas and of course it only took $23 and some change so we went back in to get our $5 and change but he refused to give us the $5 and gave us $2 instead!?!? WHATS $30.00-$23.00?? definitely not $2 which is all he gave us. He argued with us and said we were wrong but he wasn't understanding so we just left. If I could rate this place 0 stars I would. AVOID THIS GAS STATION AT ALL COSTS!! and the bathrooms smell like $h!t!!!! read more

Stopped at this Chevron to use the bathroom because somebody was feeling like they're going to vomit. Asked for the bathroom and he told me where it was. Then after getting out of the bathroom he asked me how much I wanted on what number. When I told him I wasn't filling up he blew up at me. He then told me to get out of the store once I told him that we weren't going to be filling up because we had already filled up. Horrible customer service. The bathrooms were very clean in the store was nicely put together but you can't run a good establishment by being a jerk to your potential customers. There were no signs saying that bathrooms are only for customers the owner just seem to think that it was an underline rule of thumb. Would never stop here again if I had to. Found a nice casino gas station just down the road for more than $.50 cheaper per gallon. read more

+ you have to understand that i didn't WANT to interrupt my annual camping trip at lower grays meadow, 6 miles off the US-395 in independence, to power up my laptop and work. but when duty calls, this chevron gas station-slash-subway sandwich shop-slash-convenience store saved the day with its free wi-fi internet for customers. the connection was fairly strong and quick. my back-ups were a few wi-fi hotspots 17 miles away in lone pine, so this -- a straight shot downhill from my campsite -- was awesome. extra stars for the subway being clean, air conditioned, with plenty of tables for me to set up on. read more
