The gas station bears the rural "you need it/we got it" mark up, but really, you're only going to drop an extra 20¢ a gallon here, compared to station prices from Lone Pine to Bishop. This is also your last stop heading south for a while, so clean restrooms and the usual gas station mini-mart fare are found here. Across the street from a popular jerky joint with a cult-following, we duck in here on almost every trip to the Eastern Sierras. Might as well stop in, especially if you're southbound.

A line at the pumps, since more than one not working, one with a cardboard sign you could not see until you drove up, one with no sign, so you get out, try to make it work, and give up. Told cashier, recommended they put a bag on the pump, he basically said, "so what?", my problem to have been in line for a pump that did not work, then another line for one that did. So bought enough to get to Mohave and filled up there. And men's room has thee urinals, one blocked off with a stack of milkcrates. No paper towels, changing the review from 4 to 3 stars. Now the Shell station in Mohave has an even worse men's room, as does the Shell station down 395 about 8 miles, so I'm lucky that men can pee standing up. But Subway is Subway, Jersey Mike's in Lone Pine is much better if you want a real Italian sandwich like they make on the East Coast.

Enter this Shell station. Along any other stretch of road, it wouldn't even merit a review. And yet, with not much else in town but residential neighborhoods and a few artsy shops with whim n fancy hours, this gas station/mini mart is a welcomed oasis... Especially if yo have kids with hamster bladders and a penchant for excessive lemonade consumption. Snacks, gas, bait n tackle, an adjacent Subway sandwich place, and an amazing view of the Eastern Sierra highlight this shop. Nice staff that is patient and seemingly understanding that they are, quite literally, the only game in town. Rather than exploit this, however, they wear it as a badge of honor, and treat folks nicer. Love them small towns, son.

We also bought the mixed bag of local cookies, having 4 of them tonight. They were soft, excellent dipped in milk. Staff highly recommended the local garlic sourdough and lemon cookies. We split a lemon cookie from our mixed bag and also had a chocolate chip cookie each. In a part of the world where gas was more than $6 per gallon, Memorial Day, 2026, I looked for any price break I could find. There's also a small Tribal casino here.

In sleepy little Independence, I have to imagine this place relies on mostly weary travelers stopping in for gasoline, a couple of sodas, a bag of snacks to make a living. Anyway, we stopped here on the way home from Lake Crowley, to top off the tank on a very busy southbound 395 post-July 4 weekend drive. We bought a couple of bottles of soda, and a pack of jerky. No more expensive than just about any other gas station I've been to. My kids used the heck out of the bathroom, too. The fellow behind the counter was not saccharine sweet or anything, but cordial. Funny thing about the small-town business folk: they respond awfully well to common courtesy with a dash of kindness. Come to think of it, most people do. I also appreciated the relatively large parking lot and plenty of room to turn around with a small trailer. Some of the gas stations in towns up and down the 395 don'tfeature as much space.
