Yesterday my dad needed to see a dentist immediately. He'd received a diagnosis that required immediate attention. Since I've been a patient at this dental center for many years, I called them and asked if they could, in this urgent case, provide an appt for my dad immediately. They did so willingly. My dad and mom arrived and were well cared for while being in there. Which doesn't surprise me. That staff and dentists are so friendly, competent and compassionate. I'm super delighted that my dad and mom had a pleasantly warm invitation. And, he received referrals to top doctors to see next steps. Drs Telis and Robinson are brilliant! read more

Severe dental anxiety and a few years of no dental insurance left me needing work that could not be procrastinated anymore. I choose this place because they had good reviews from other people with dental anxiety. The first two visits, I saw a female doctor I couldn't catch her name. She and her assistant put me at relative ease. She did x-rays, a deep cleaning, a removal, and bone graft. I managed to sit through it without freaking out, largely due to the demeanor of the dentist. My hands were shaking but they gave me a stress ball to squeeze and I made it through. Next I was scheduled to return and get the stitches removed and some fillings done. After the bone graft took, she planned to do an implant. The work order was written up and approved by me. But on the day of my visit, I got a call saying the female dr was out on a family emergency. But I'd be seen by Dr Lim. Ok... Well, Dr Lim came into the room. The dental assistant told me that he was quiet, but was a great dentist who specialized in root canals. I was already nervous, and Dr Lim's bedside manner did not improve. First, he wasn't just quiet, he kept dropping and adjusting my chair without warning, jerking my body around. Without reviewing notes, he removed the stitches (I had to tell them where they were). Then looked at xrays, and growled, "I'm going to do a root canal." and left the room. The front desk lady came in with a new work order and cost estimate. Dr Lim basically ignored everything that the other dentist did, and just wanted to do a root canal in a tooth that the other dentist didn't mention. When I asked about the other work, the desk lady fetched the paperwork. Together, with the root canal and cap, planned implant, and fillings, it was more than I could swing. At this point, my anxiety was very high. Dr Lim came back in the room to explain why I needed the root canal. He pointed to the x-rays, which I don't know how to read. He said, in a very hostile tone, that if I didn't get it fixed, the cavity would just get worst. He said he didn't see the point of the planned implant when I needed other work on teeth that were closer to the front of my mouth. During our interaction, he demonstrated that he hadn't reviewed my prior treatment notes by saying he'd address a problem with my teeth that the other dentist had already fixed (but still showed up on the original x-rays). I didn't give consent, so Dr Lim left the room. I decided to just leave with the stitches being removed, and not get any more dental work done that day. I wasn't prepared for a root canal, having gone in expecting a mild day of fillings. Before I left, I expressed that my confidence was shaken by the fact that the two different dentists didn't agree on a single plan of action for what work was the highest priority. I have no doubt that I need a fair amount of work, but I wasn't happy with the first doctor's treatment plan being belittled by the second doctor. The front desk lady said she'd bring the issue to the head dentist, Dr Sanna, and ask him to prioritize dental work with the two doctor's differing plans in mind. She said she'd get back to me Monday (it was Friday). I left, and proceeded to have a full blown panic attack. No one from the dentist office called me to follow up on the issue. It is very unfortunate that Dr. Sanna chose to respond in such an presumptive manner to my original review. How we were treated by the dental hygienist when we called to inform the Dental Center that we running late was the last straw in several negative interactions I have had with staff, and because I did not mention this incident in my original review, Dr. Sanaa's response is entirely inappropriate. To reiterate, new front desk staff and a few of the dental assistants are rude on a regular basis and demonstrate biased behavior toward certain demographics. On the day I was running late, my significant other who stutters, called while I was driving to inform the Dental Center that I was running late. The dental assistant who answered the call would not let him speak and was extremely rude. Since she was on speaker phone, I asked her not to do that and to stop yelling at us. Funny thing is, we would have arrived before the 15 min grace period Dr. Sanaa mentioned in his response. Following the incident, I spoke with the office manager multiple times who explained the the assistant was the only person staffing when I called and was stressed out. I fear that under those conditions, my appointment would have been uncomfortable anyway. The office manager informed me that Dr. Sanaa would call to speak to me directly. Over one week later when I finally requested that my records be sent to another dentist office, Dr. Sanaa decided to immediately call me ONCE while I was in a meeting at work and left a voicemail. Dr. Sanaa, while I understand you are trying to do damage control, responding to my review with a small piece of the story 4 months later is not the way. Thank you for respecting my decision not to return, and respectfully, please do not engage with my Yelp reviews any further. read more

I went in for a routine dental cleaning that is supposed to be covered by me insurance. They ended up taking xrays, which I supposed was going to be covered by my insurance. Turns out I only get those covered every 2 years, and I was a bit short on that timing. This is something they could have alerted me on. Additionally, they took photos of my teeth, that I did not see or consent to, that I was charged for as well. The dentist came in for about 3 minutes and suggested 2 crowns and 2 fillings. Crowns are expensive and I have never been told to get them, so I was suspicious....especially since the dentist did not even show me the problem areas in the xray. I will be going somewhere else and contesting the additional charges that I did not consent to. Stay away, it's always a bad sign to go to a practice that uses a lot of advertisement. read more

I'm someone who is legitimately terrified of the dentist and always puts off appointments until something catastrophic happens. Bad idea, but I've had some rough dental experiences in the past. However, after two recent appointments with Dr. Ghesmati, I am convinced my phobia and fears of dentists are gone. She was professional, comforting, and reassuring. She promised me no pain, and she delivered. The entire office is warm, welcoming and very COVID safe with their PPE and procedures. I've been going to Chevy Chase Dental Center for over two years now and have only had wonderful experiences! My dental hygienist, Toni, is friendly and efficient, making every cleaning a painless experience. Dr. Tellis is also cordial and very professional with a great memory, even though he only sees me every 6 months for routine checkups. Scheduling appointments is easy and they are always happy to squeeze me in where it works for my schedule or see me last minute for emergency work. My only complaint is the front desk staff will occasionally botch an insurance claim, but just giving them a call, they happily fix and resubmit the claim. read more

I'm grateful that I came across Chevy Chase Dental Center. They were able to get me a last minute appointment when a filling (done by another dentist) came out. At my first appointment with Dr. Telis, he was able to show me x-rays moments after taking them, on a screen that sits right in the room. (A+ for technology!) He went to work right away, and developed a plan to get some much needed work done. I'm very appreciative that Dr. Telis and his team listened to my concerns, addressed what was most urgent first, and suggested a reasonable care plan moving forward. The folks at the front desk are very friendly. They call prior to the appointment to confirm. The day after major appointments, they call to see how I'm feeling. They also greet me by name each time I arrive. They were also very reasonable when it came to creating a billing/payment plan. When I found out I would need extensive dental work, they checked what my insurance would cover, and then were willing to allow me to make payments over time to cover what I was responsible for. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the services rendered by the Chevy Chase Dental team. The front desk, dental hygienists and doctors are all very personable. Dr. Telis is very personable, explaining what's happening with each procedure while doing the work. He and his assistants have put me at ease when I felt anxious about what's going on prior to and during the procedures. Dr. Robinson and Dr. Telis are no longer in this office! Their successor, Dr. Sanaa, pushes for extensive treatment plans, such as doing several crowns at a time. Please be vigilant and avoid this practice. In my case, he did not even ask about the desired color of the crown. More importantly, one of them is sloppily done, not well aligned with the surrounding gums and thus creating a space for microbes; hard to keep clean even with floss. When brought to their attention, Dr. Sanaa and his dentist partner did not adequately address these issues, denied them, and left them unresolved--after a big bill had been processed. read more

This office is still as fantastic as ever! I seriously can't say enough good things about this place. They actually bill both of my dental insurances (instead of requiring everything up front) and accept CareCredit when the final bill does come. This by itself makes me a huge fan, but it only gets better. I have seen Dr Telis, Dr Robinson, Teresa, Toni and had wonderful interactions with all of the front desk staff and assistants. I don't think my extreme dental anxiety will ever subside, but this place is surely doing everything possible to make it better. I had a couple pre-existing dental issues fixed by Dr Telis. Everything was pain-free and turned out great. My dental cleanings have been thorough and extremely informative. Both Teresa and Toni have given me extensive information and come up with at-home plans to improve my overall dental health. As someone who (prior to coming to this clinic) never had prevention options discussed and always had supposedly idiopathic dental problems found at every visit ever, I sincerely appreciate this. Since coming up with these prevention plans here, I have not had any new or worsening dental problems - not even a single cavity! Just overall a great practice in every aspect. read more

I've never liked going to the dentist, but now that I've found Chevy Chase Dental I'm more than happy coming in for anything from check-ins and cleanings to getting crowns and fillings. I've been seeing Dr. Telis since 2000 and he's wonderful. I drive up from Alexandria for him. Personable, friendly, explains everything well, humble and intelligent. A few shining events stood out in my mind: once I got a tiny cut on my gum during a complicated filling and he did free follow up and even called in a colleague for a second opinion since it was healing slowly. A lot of dentists would have been too arrogant to call in someone else over something so minor. He never tries to 'sell' anything like so many dentists do but he does take the time to explain pros and cons. He got me using an electric toothbrush, which dramatically reduced my cavities. I referred a friend to him as she was shocked when her dentist proscribed all kinds of coatings and treatments which she couldn't afford and despite the fact her teeth had always been good. Dr. Telis gave her a second opinion as follows "I don't need your money and you don't need that stuff". Dr. Telis's staff are wonderful too. I'd had a bunch of bad dentist experiences, my favorite being a guy in Ohio who called me a 'bleeder' since I guess I'm prone to small cuts. I trust Dr Telis and I actually feel about as relaxed as I can get at the dentist at his office. If I could give a 6th star I would. You don't go to the same dentist for 17 years (including a year spent overseas) and even as he moves further away, unless he's a great dentist. read more
