Okay, I don't want to sound over-the-top, but this was the worst customer service I've ever had. I used to work in food service so I know how grueling it can be. I always tip well and make a point of being gracious, but the servers here were so vicious, unprofessional and unhinged that my boyfriend and I left in a terrible mood. They had three lunch sandwiches on their menu. I came up to the counter to ask if I could have a cheddar, avocado and tomato sandwich (all of which were ingredients in their other sandwiches). The woman rolled her eyes at me and said "no we can't do that." That would make sense if their sandwiches were pre-made but they were made from scratch. I asked are you sure and offered to pay full price. She literally smirked at me, walked away and went back to the kitchen without answering my question. Her husband who was also working there came forward and said the same thing to me, and was also extremely rude. I would have been okay with them not making my sandwich, but the way they treated me was terrible. I told them they don't know how to treat customers and that I was going to write a yelp review about their business. As I was leaving I was so flustered that I accidentally knocked into my table and dropped my coffee. I stepped outside to cool off to a second. While I was outside they came after my boyfriend in the cafe who was sitting down eating and started attacking him, causing a scene. When we left - I kid you not - they ran after both of us in the street and the husband came out and started snapping our photos in the street with his phone threatening to post it online if I wrote a bad review. We've all experienced one of those excitement-filled nights in the city that never sleeps where you venture home come sunrise and then all you want is a no-bullshit-iced coffee and bangin breakfast to start the new day...well if that's the case, do yourself a favor by avoiding Chez Alex at all costs because despite a promising vegan-friendly menu, you will leave feeling all kinds of empty inside. My boyfriend ate the Alex sandwich, which I assume is the house favorite because it is named after the establishment, and it was so awful he threw up and cried. Eating anything slathered with lukewarm vegan mayo and soggy tomato slices on a balmy summers day is enough to make one nauseous, but it didn't stop there. The service was snippy and rude..my boyfriend asked for hot sauce and the lady behind the counter snapped at him that she was busy, proceeded to take 10 minutes and finally returned with THE stingiest amount of srriacha sauce ever presented...We're talking less than a teaspoon here, people. For an entire sandwich? What an unfavorable sandwich-to-sauce ratio. It was also the first time in my entire adult life that had to throw away a full iced coffee because it tasted acidic and downright crusty. Oh, and it's cash only. They get 2 stars because 3 out of 4 pastries we ordered were pretty tasty, and the space is quite cute with all the plants. Everything else was an unpleasant experience. The lady at the counter was rude and gave me attitude about everything from wanting to pour my own milk into an americano, to not speaking loud enough when I was ordering something. Store policies I understand fine, but the rude attitude that came with it was very unnecessary. They were nice in that they offered to heat up the quiche and spinach pie my sister and I ordered, but when it came out the spinach pie was burnt to a crisp to the point that i was amazed they would serve it to anyone instead of just heating a new one. Their coffee was just ok, I felt like they were overpriced for what they were. My cappuccino was bitter and not properly foamed, and my mom complained her americano was sour. They have lots of vegan options but with how horrible the customer service was and the prices I think you can find better. All in all I wouldn't visit again, the only reason we can today was because my usual shop across the street was closed. read more

Charming cafe and bakery with a plethora vegan baked goods, treats, and sandwiches. Their vegan chocolate chip cookie is among the best I have ever eaten-rich vanilla flavors and perfect soft texture. Only $1.50 for this delicious treat. The vegan quiche and breakfast sandwich also looked incredible. Service was lovely and welcoming, and there is plenty of seating. If I lived closer to this neighborhood, I would come here every day. I biked over here today from crown heights, excited to try an omni place with actual vegan breakfast items- this is a rare thing in NYC. A few of the menu items were erased, which I guess means they were out of those ingredients. I ordered the vegan red sandwich, which was pretty good. My main complaint is that the cilantro was a bit brown, and that there weren't enough "meatballs" to fill up the sandwich. My girlfriend ordered the non-vegan red and had the same complaint. I also got the vegan blueberry muffin, which had a nice crispy topping, but was mushy on the inside. Overall, I wasn't impressed by anything I got, but am definitely willing to go back and give it another try! Next time I'll get a vegan breakfast sandwich. read more

Sandwich - wise, I've tried the crazy eyes and scully. And the verdict is, I really enjoyed the crazy eyes, it's warm, has good texture, and the soy cheddar is sooo good!!! The scully does taste more on the salad side, it's served slightly cold and tastes similar to a chicken salad as they have noted on the menu. I think I was expecting something warm and so I was a little bummed when it came out cold, but I guess most chicken salad sandwiches are served cold. Dessert - wise, I've tried their vegan chocolate chip cookie, it's delicious! I wished I had the belly space to have tried more. Other than that, I think the service could have been a bit friendlier, but maybe I've gotten used to the more positive customer service experience over on the west coast. read more

New favorites of mine that will awaken your taste buds and restore your faith in humanity: -breakfast sandwich with eggs, bacon, tomato, spicy mayo, and avocado; -strawberry basil lemonade (SO much flavor, SO good) - smoothie bowls I have also gotten to know the owners more. They are great people who are constantly thinking about how to improve their offerings and the shop in general. We need more businesses like this in the neighborhood, so Chez Alex has my full support. As for all you people who have made negative comments about the decor, what can I say, h8ters are gonna hate. Chez Alex is perfectly spacious, never crowded, has plenty of comfortable seating, and reasonably priced. If you've had personal success with single-handedly running a neighborhood cafe that has delicious treats AND won awards for its superior interior design, then maybe, just MAYBE, you are qualified to pontificate on the topic. This review is solely based on the banana pudding.... I Just happen to stumble here a few days ago and saw the sign that had banana pudding listed. I thought I would give it a try but I really didn't have high expectations for it at all and let's just say.... I was DEAD wrong. This banana pudding was probably one of the best I have ever eaten. I ordered the Alex w/o the bread to stay. The cook was accommodating (though the counter guy said no, we only do sandwiches and was a little condescending) when she overheard my order. I was not trying to be picky, just letting them know I could not eat the bread, so they might as well save it. I really hate wasting food and thought it was silly to make the full sandwich knowing i would waste it. I tipped at the counter because the cook was nice enough to do that even though the guy said no. The food was very fresh. They had amazing tomatoes which made me jealous. I haven't found produce that good in the area to bring home! Very quiet, lots of sunlight and people watching on the sidewalk. I also ordered the cold brew black. I walked in there on a blustery day hoping to try one of their delicious baked goods (another yelper had previously said they were "dank"), friends, I know dank baked goods, I studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris for a semester, and let me tell you, I wouldn't serve these baked good at my lowliest installation piece. The girl at the counter was a little too "nice", I prefer my servers to be curt and to the point. I did not care what happened on "girls" last night, and I certainly didn't care to hear about her menstrual cycle. As for the foods themselves? BLAND! Her sandwiches are so delicious and the bake goods are to die for!!! The carrot cake is delicious by the way and you have to try the cookies and the ice lemonade!! Just finished the soy chorizo & tofu scramble sandwich & I'm so content the only thing I want to do is go to sleep & dream about going back. It was that good! This was my 1st time going. This is quite possibly my favorite spot in Brooklyn. Chez Alex does everything right. From the sweet treats, to the caffeine, to the sandwiches, right down to customer service. I usually work remotely from Chez Alex and am hella productive. The vibe, the tunes, the decor -- it just feels nice and homey. Also -- they have vegan treats (I'm not a vegan, but I somehow feel less guilty when indulge.) These baked goods are what we in the business like to call "dank." The brownies are so gooey, try the cheesecake brownie. The muffins are great, the fruit in them is always fresh. And you never know what else you end up with from chez alex: a Japanese cheesecake, a vegan chocolate bundt, a passionfruit bar. Everything is delicious. But, folks, the bacon egg and cheese croissant is the best item on the menu. I tried this cafe again. And I must say, 'Neo there's a glitch in the matrix!', because the Customer Service was excellent! The owner was there and he was very personable, warm smiles and recommended pastries to try. I had the Ginger Juice which was simply amazing! There is no other Ginger Juice probably in the whole of Brooklyn that's as good and is as potent as this. I also tried the chocolate chip cookie and banana pudding which was again off the charts. Its difficult to make good, fresh banana pudding but they nailed it! All of their treats are made in house, so they are as fresh as can be. I sat and enjoyed the vibe, its quiet and the owner was polite and personable with everyone who came in the door. This is really a nice place and would recommend coming again and again.
