For someone who doesn't always prefer eating meat, Chez Alex has all the perfect options for me. The majority of their menu is vegan, which is perfect. When I first tried the food, it was perfect. I ordered the avocado toast and it was delicious. Not only is the food perfect, so is the climate. The staff is really polite and talkative, in a good way. I also love the set up of the place. The tables are spread apart, just enough for everyone to have their personal space. The plants and decorations just make the place cozy and welcoming. Definitely one of my favorite spots, not only in Bed-Stuy but all of NYC. The space is very open with lots of plants so that's already a win with me. The menu is half vegan, half non-vegan so there really are options for everyone. Their vegan chocolate cake is scrumptious, but there are two things here that you cannot leave without trying. 1. The everything croissant - just WOW. It's your everything bagel with cream cheese in a croissant. Alex nailed it with this one. 2. The Scully Sandwich - hands down the BEST vegan sandwich (above By Chloe, Quantum Leap, and Champs to name a few) I love everything about this delicious sandwich - the textures, the flavors... mmmmm. Extremely Poor customer service. This is my first 1 star review I usually try to give good reviews or find something good about an establishment to comment on when writing a review but I have nothing good to say about this establishment and the customer service they provide me. I placed an order for a cake on Sunday and asked if it could be made for Thursday. I provided the establishment with my name and number and asked about payment. The employee was not sure of price so placed me on hold to ask, when returning to the phone he provided me with the price AND provided me with the option to pay when I picked up the cake up. NEVER ONCE SAID THEY NEEDED PAYMENT 48hrs from placement of order or that it MUST BE DONE OVER THE PHONE. Now to give some background info this is a cake I needed done for my friends birthday she has many allergies and this establishment was willing to or could make a cake not using things she is allergic to. So I was extremely excited to surprise her with this. I had no problem paying over the phone. I called the day before I was supposed to pick up my cake to ask if I could pick it up in the early morning only to have one of the employees tell me they canceled my cake order due to non payment. I was willing to pay then on the phone with them and begged them to still make the cake and asked to speak with the manager who I was told I could only reach via email. When I sent him an email regarding the situation he responded with an extremely defensive email about how I refused to pay over the phone which was NEVER the case. Why would I refuse to pay for a service I was over the moon excited for? But instead of working with the customer and providing me with an apology for miscommunication because I really wanted this cake I was given excuse after excuse and blamed for the issue. The customer is always right. If payment was needed a simple phone call would have sufficed and I would have payed immediately I even offered to pay on the phone when I found out that was why the cake wasn't being made. Not only was the owner Alex rude but he didn't seem to care about the fact that this cake was for a special occasion and literally now I have to break the news to my friend she will have no cake all because this business was not willing to work with me. I ordered more than enough days in advance and there was simply a misunderstanding regarding form of payment . NO ONE CALLED TO NOTIFY ME MY CAKE WAS BEING CANCELLED. And if they would have called I would have most definitely payed for the cake right then and there even when I had initially ordered it I would have paid. Via email the owner even stated that I REFUSED to pay which is completely false he was not on the phone with me and to accuse a customer of that is just way out of line and honestly it is really offensive to me because that is not what happened and I would have been more than willing to pay over the phone if that is what was expected or needed. At the end of the day I am extremely disappointed I was met with so much animosity. No apologies were given to me just excuses and blame. If your ordering any baked goods please think twice purely on the poor customer service and lack of respect this owner has for patrons. read more

Chez Alex Oh chez alex...tis tis tis. So I'm going to have to remind people that customer service just doesn't seem to be something this couple does (well). I wish I could have more to say..like how great their sandwiches and pastries were but I didn't even get an opportunity to order. Rather I was not granted the courtesy that I expect of an eatery with a high quality product. I came in because a friend recommended their sandwiches. The Caputo sounded great but I honestly don't stomach broccoli rabe. It just doesn't land well. Whatever my reason is- I have a right to withdraw an item from an order and most especially from a sandwich concoction. The cook..who I believe is the arrogant wife of the owner...barked at me from her window in the back saying that it wouldn't be the same sandwich. When I say bark. I mean bark. She didn't suggest that I enjoy it in its original form and regale me with information about how complimentary and enjoyable the ingredients would be. Then the front man who I believe is the crazy husband mentioned in other 1 star reviews told me the sandwiches were not premade and told me to take the rabe out myself. All this was snipped at me as he gazed with a look that expressed I was unreasonable and ludicrous. I then politely smiled and mentioned how taking out broccoli would be a waste and then if have ti throw it away..so why not avoid the waste altogether? Makes sense right. I mean this 5 minute interaction shouldn't even had happened. As servers and hopefully experienced restaurateurs they should assume there's a valid reason that I want to alter my food. Have you thought that maybe I could've had an allergy? How about that, rocket scientists? Well I'm proud of the fact that I didn't humble myself to their rude and unpleasant attitude. I walked away and said I had changed my mind leaving them a trail in the dust. Instead I had a wonderful coffee and amazing chocolate croissant at Manny's cafe nearby. Couldn't have made a better decision. In conclusion: avoid this place. Just because they have talked about pastries doesn't mean they deserve your money. Especially after you get to read what they did to the who also rated 1 star. Chasing after customers? Really? How old are you? I wish you would've done it to me. This is my first experience with Chez Alex. I think the food was very good. The bread a little tough but everything was tasty. The mint ginger lemonade was superb. My husband went to select and take out. I got my receipt via text message. The prices on the receipt were higher than the menu prices plus he came back with an item not on the menu. I sent a message because I wanted clarity before giving my review. The owner said Yelp didn't have their menu. I sent them what was on Yelp. Apparently Yelp does keep up with menu and price changes, maybe it's the owner's responsibility. The owner suggested calling to verify menus and prices. Great idea!! THIS PLACE IS GREAT! From the super cool neon sign in the window, tucked away in a sea of crazy signage for fusion places, it was like a haven for the short 2 hours we had before I had to catch my flight back to Texas. We picked this place because of other reviews and the vegan/veg options. Oh MY goodness GRAcious - it is GREAT. I had the veg chorizo, I mean I have never had real chorizo to compare to but either way it was GREAT. And they make their own bread! Fantastic!! The guy at the counter was really nice, I realized we were ordering breakfast items just a hair after breakfast closed, so I felt bad. Either way, we all enjoyed what we had. My friend got the Red, veg, and also greatly enjoyed it. I purchased a couple of their home baked goods, including a vegan cupcake, but unfortunately left them in our AirBnb! But they were beautiful and probably tasted AMAZING. Also, the decor inside is so bizarre in comparison to the restaurants and sights around it. I believe it is Orange is the New Black themed?? Magnifique! I have had my eye on this place for the past couple of weeks before our weekend trip to Brooklyn. Honestly, It kind of reminds me of the little baker shops back in France where everything is homemade and created with the finest ingredients. The woman at the front was so warm and welcoming and has the patience of a saint haha. I purchased a slice of the vegan chocolate cake, m&m cookie, vegan chocolate chip cookie, classic chocolate chip cookie, and the "red" sandwich I believe (it's the one with the chicken meatballs) . My boyfriend got the "everything croissant". Each and every single item we ordered was perfectly crafted. All of the ingredients were of the highest quality and you can tell from the taste and the presentation itself. Also the food smelled so good. If you have an appreciation for quality food and a thing for small places be sure to stop by. I'm not vegan or vegetarian but Im lactose intolerant so I really wanted to give the deserts a try and I'm so glad I did. Adorable cafe near the border of Bed-Stuy and Bushwick. Came here for coffee with my friend, who, at the time, had just recently moved into the area. My coffee was fine and our server was friendly. I liked the eclectic mix of comfy furniture that you can choose to sit in and either chill with friends or to get some work done. Stumbled upon this place shortly after moving to Bed/Stuy, and so glad I did! The staff are always super sweet and helpful, and the decor is adorable (from regular tables to comfy arm chairs and a couch). A great place to come study, or read from the stacks of books set out.
