Chez Black came recommended from a friend and this classic old school restaurant delivered. It was our last dinner in the Amalfi Coast area before heading back to Roma and the ambiance was really nice. The restaurant theme here is below deck of a ship with portholes, well varnished wood everywhere and staff dressed in seamen gear. The staff was super attentive and were on point. They were super ready to help when needed. Our food, however, was decent but not great and didn't live up to the hype. For example, the carbonara was too yellow which was indicative of egg being added. Not the normal Italian way. The other food was good but not spectacular. This place has longevity and is in a great location and the staff is great but the food needs to get up to par for me to want to return. read more

This spot is a popular tourist destination in Positano, especially near the main area. Older reviews suggest it's a fantastic place to eat, but I've noticed that the food quality has declined over time. It's mainly known for its waterfront location. Just a heads-up: the front row tables require reservations. We managed to snag a spot in the back, though there's always a line. The wait seemed to be moving quickly. The service was busy but seemed to be doing its best. The staff appeared a bit overwhelmed. I've included some menu prices, so you know it's definitely on the pricier side. You're really paying for the view. We ordered calamari, but it tasted frozen and didn't quite live up to the price. Sure, it has some cute decor and table settings. I wanted to give this a 5 star because the food was that good. The minus 2 stars was getting ripped off with a few entree sizes where my friend clearly asked for small steak and got a 350 steak, overpriced wine- as they chose expensive and making it sound like they were not including the tip but after you see the bill - they charge you a tip. Chez Black in Positano absolutely lived up to the hype, and then some! From the moment we sat down, everything was exceptional. The drinks were perfection...the Hugo Spritz and Aperol Spritz were some of the best we've had on the Amalfi Coast! The appetizers started the night off strong, the tuna tartare was incredibly fresh, and the prosciutto and melon combination was simple yet unforgettable. We loved it SO much, we ordered a second helping, before our main dishes! Every dish that followed somehow topped the last. The chicken parmesan was hands-down my favorite dish of the night, perfectly cooked, flavorful, comforting, and elevated all at once. The lobster linguine was delicious and decadent (yes, it absolutely requires the bib ), while the linguine pesto was next-level good. If you're looking for something lighter, the chicken Caesar salad was also incredible and far from an afterthought. And then came the tiramisu... the true star of the show. Easily one of the best desserts we've had in Italy. Amazing food, incredible drinks, beautiful Positano atmosphere, and a memorable dining experience from start to finish. Chez Black is an absolute must when visiting Positano! If you are lucky enough Chez Black himself can be spotted dining at his restaurant. He sits at a private table right by the hostess stand, it's truly so wholesome, and provides. an overall sense of a true family atmosphere at this special restaurant. This is definitely a trendy "it spot" filled with tourist energy and celebrity wall photos, but the food does not live up to the hype. On a positive note, the servers were friendly, the decor is fun, and making a same-day Saturday evening reservation when walking up to the restaurant in the afternoon was seamless. Unfortunately, the culinary experience was highly disappointing for Positano. The pesto linguine was average. The side tomato salad was the worst I have tasted in Italy, though still slightly better than the US. The biggest letdown was the Chicken Caesar Salad; at €32, it was vastly overpriced and tasted awful. I regret not ordering a steak instead. If this were my only experience with Italian cuisine in Positano, I would be extremely disappointed. The lemon olive oil cake was decent way to end the experience. Overall bad experience. Fiancé and I both got chicken scaloppine marsala/lemon and they both were inedible. We really will never complain about a meal, but my fiancé worked up the courage and told our waiter. He was kind about it and said he took it off the bill for us without us asking. Loved chez black! Pretty much right on the beach with good views. Service was friendly and prompt. My Aperol spritz was good. They also gave us complementary Prosecco which was nice! My husband and I split the caprese salad, gnocchi, a Margherita pizza and meatballs and everything was excellent. For being a place full of tourists, the food is pretty decent. Definitely make sure you have a reservation if you plan to eat around 8pm. We had been walking around the area around 7pm and joked that we didn't even need a reservation. Lo and behold, by the time we sat (7:45), the place started filling up very quickly. You are paying for the atmosphere, location, vibes, and hype. Was good, not fishy, and nothing special -Seafood spaghetti, 4/5. I noticed a lot of food in Positano was on the saltier side. Not sure if this was due to my normally bland tastebuds or the natural salt from seafood. Personal preference aside, we really enjoyed the simplicity and freshness of a seafood pasta with tomatoes. Chez Black was my favorite eating experience while in Positano. My wife and I liked it so much we actually ended up going twice. Both times we were there, the staff were so nice and friendly, especially with helping out with our two year old son. They do have high chairs for any families considering. Our last night and we wanted to be in with the crowd. It was busy, but we were seated pretty quickly. However, placing a order was another story. It felt like we were being skipped over, but I'm sure they were just busy. The ambiance is nice as it is facing the ocean, but at night you cannot see too much. Just people watch and enjoy the hustle and bustle. The interior was full of photos with famous people and people that I don't recognize. We chose a good place I suppose. Our food came out pretty quickly. I had the clam linguine while my friend had the eggplant lasagna. Perfect dinner to end our trip, no complaints here. Prices weren't too bad, but if you think it's expensive, you're most likely paying for the views/location. We didn't mind it at all. I must say the location was great and it's a very romantic setting. However I was not too impressed with the food. I had high hopes for the octopus but it was very chewy ... worst part is they didn't even provide a sharp knife. I had to use a butter knife to cut it which felt like a work out. Of all the places we dined at while touring across Italy, this was by far the worst food we had anywhere in the country. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is gorgeous, but the food is exceptionally terrible. - I ordered the veal scaloppine in light lemon sauce. It had the taste and texture of a rubber dog chew. Completely rancid in flavor and so over cooked I could barely cut it with my knife, let alone chew it. I had to send it back and didn't bother having them remake it. - My wife's spaghetti and meatballs was so bad that it makes IKEA's food court meatballs look good. - Limoncello like paint thinner. The best part was leaving so we could go get dinner at a different restaurant. Again, of all the places we dined at in Italy, this one stood out by far because how bad the food was. This was one of our best meals in Italy period. Sure it may not be your average posh restaurant, however it's serene views of the beach are sure to make up for it. It also doesn't hurt that it's close by the boats which can take you off the coast. Unsurprisingly, the venue was packed when we first arrived, however we waited less than 20 minutes to be seated. As soon as you come in you see piles of freshly caught seafood on display in the back portion of the restaurant. We ordered the margarita pizza, which was crispy and to die for (5/5). We also ordered one of their seafood platters. Everything was delicious and bursting with flavors and dare I say a 6/5. Ah, the Amalfi Coast -- Enter this once-glorious, now-glorified cafeteria, coasting on a 75-year-old reputation and the Instagram dreams of unsuspecting tourists. I made the mistake of ordering a green salad. For €8, I was presented with what can only be described as an elegant bowl of shredded disappointment -- iceberg lettuce. Just iceberg lettuce. No tomato, no cucumber, no dressing. Not even a rogue crouton. It looked like something salvaged from the back of a Furr's Cafeteria in 1996, minus the charm and the neon Jell-O. The rest of the menu reads like a love letter to mediocrity, with pasta dishes that taste like they were prepped by someone who heard of garlic once and seafood so uninspired it could only have been grilled with resentment. Yes, the view is stunning -- which is probably how they get away with charging double for half the effort. But don't be fooled by the linen tablecloths and the old photos of celebrities on the wall. This place is less "classic Amalfi elegance" and more "cruise ship buffet in disguise." read more

Maybe because it was a later dinner reservation but this is your typical tourist trap restaurant with not very friendly staff. We couldn't flag anyone down for over 20-25min to order drinks and food and we were smashed between 2 large parties. All waitstaff were quite cold, even when we were talking to them in Italian. Food was interesting but not amazing. Food prices are pricier than normal, but that's to be expected along the beach in a tourist village town. Our meal here was absolutely delicious. Just fantastic. My mom loved her seafood spaghetti so much that she stuffed herself fuller than any other place the entire trip. I had the lobster, which was perfectly prepared. Probably some of the best lobster I have ever had (and I have eaten lobster up and down Maine's coast). Our server was kind and quick, ensuring we got back to our boat on time. We sat right next to the kitchen and the chefs interacted with us. Everyone was so nice. Also, the bathroom was fantastic.
