So here goes my first yelp review. I never felt compelled enough to take the time to write a review until now. Why? Because it's going to be a bad review. I looked on Yelp and found the reviews for Code 5 to be more on the positive side. I quickly made an appointment with my (now ex) stylist, Louis. The receptionist said he charged $60/haircut and was the lead cut stylist who taught classes every Thursday. I thought I was in good hands but I was wrong. Instead of being a bitch and insulting Louis' work to his face, I'm choosing to be passive-aggressive and write a bad review on Yelp. Louis, I hope you're reading this, because you should know why I will not be coming to see you again. I asked you to give me a haircut with lots of volume and layers. Instead, you gave me a haircut that made me look like a Chinese pop star. http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/6028/623763dn3.jpg -- I look like the 2nd guy from the left (but with longer hair). Ok, you all can stop laughing now. I specifically told Louis to give me a haircut with lots of layers to give me more volume. I'm Chinese with fine hair so I need lots of wispy, textured layers. The haircut I now have is severely thinned out, which gave my hair a bland and flat look. If you looked up "mushroom head" in google images, you might find my picture there! When I asked if he could add more layers he sighed at me and said, "You can look at the floor and see how much hair I have already cut!" Oh no he di'nt!! ** Everyone, you know you have a shitty haircut when 1). Nobody at work even notices that you got a haircut; and 2). You put your hair up in a ponytail for the rest of the week. At $60/haircut (plus $15 tip) you would think that you are going to walk away with a good haircut. Lesson learned: just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's quality. If I could, I would've continued going to this Hispanic lady who charged me $8/haircut that got me TONS of compliments. Unfortunately she moved away and I made the wrong decision to choose an all-Asian hair salon. I will be paying the price for the next few months until my shit-shag hairdo grows itself out. HOWEVER, if you are into that whole shaggy, flat looking, Chinese-Japanese-Korean pop star haircut then look no further because Louis is your man! There are only two reasons why I would ever go back to Code 5: 1). To practice my mandarin; and 2). If I ever decided to pursue my minute-life dream of becoming a Chinese pop star. read more

***The two star review is towards the studio, not the stylist*** I've been coming here for 3 yrs My recent trip to Code Studio was a disaster. Thanks to their new front desk lady, (Her name is Mindy Li). I scheduled an appointment at 2:00 PM since my stylist had another at 4:00 PM. When I arrived, I asked her if my stylist Kien was here already. She answered: "Kind of..." "KIND OF?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?" That's very PROFESSIONAL and HELPFUL indeed. Thank you! I seriously had no idea what to say. I came to the conclusion that it's probably easier if I just figure things out myself. The assistant / front desk lady is completely USELESS. I went outside and gave Kien a call. He apologized and informed me that the new lady had screwed up my appointment. He was on his way. When I came back inside. She told me that Kien wasn't coming anymore and asked if I wanted another stylist. At this point I just sat down and ignored her. Continuing the conversation would've just made her look more dumb and pointless. read more

I have been to many hair salons and never found a consistent hair dresser until I found Demi. She is seriously amazing at what she does and a perfectionist to say the least. She really knows how to give professional advice and haircuts that really flatter her customer's face shape and style. The only con I would say are the prices. Haircuts start at 50 even if you are looking only for a trim! But you definitely get what you pay for! :) read more

Although there's a few assistants helping with color etc There seemed to be just one stylist going from person to person. $90 for hair color, $55 for a haircut seems a bit steep. They just seemed to take a sweet time for everything! I like careful but they just seem to redo things eg reapply hair dye, perm liquid.... they do a nice job but it just takes tooo long! read more

I have been introduced to this place from my jeweler as she often has a great hair style. She told me that I have to try it as once you get a haircut from a great hair stylist, your hairstyle routine each morning becomes so easy and quick each day. I was skeptical at first and decided to give it a try. She told me that Rex was the person to go. My first haircut took 2 hours. I was getting very weary in my seat and just wanted to ask him to finish but decided to hold my comment and not distract him. When all finished and done, I would just okay with the style. The next day though, my hair was so easy to style and I have to say that when I styled my hair the way that I was accustomed to, I actually did like the hair cut. Second time, I went, I asked to change a different hairstyle and I liked it and for months my hair was so easy to manage. The seconod appointment, the hair cut was 1 hour which was more bareable, and Rex told me the first appointment took time b/c he had to change the style and it took longer. I went overseas and thought it was convenient so got a haircut there. After that, I started to realize what my jeweler was saying. Tt was obvious that wtih Rex's haircut, so much time has been saved in the morning and I am now faithful to going back to him. Most importantly, he listens to what you want and won't "overcut" your hair. I have been through this so many times when I ask to cut off one inch, I end up being cut 3-4 inches! I came to the salon based on the reviews from yelp. I was a walk in customer. Billy was the one taking care of me and he was very knowledgable and showed real concern. My hair was quite damaged at the ends and he told me exactly what he thinks I should do to nurse it back to health. I got a color treatment and hair cut and my hair looks and feels much healthier. My total was 145 including tip which I felt fine paying because Billy really took his time to educate me on hair care. I will be going back to this place. I wasn't afraid I'd be getting a hair cut I didn't like because Billy thoroughly explained to me what he wanted to do and why. I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

I have always been apprehensive b4 entering a hair salon and freakingly regretful leaving one. I am not actually a "hair" person yet like every human being on earth, i want a nice hairdo. This time, i care less about money. My father just passed away. I felt like i need a new beginning. I am just hoping i don't need to be leaving a hair salon with tears like b4. Cuz, u know, you can spend good money and still getting disappointed. Well, enough intro---code 5 makes me happy. I was greeted by my stylish AMY CHEN. She speaks fluent Mandarin and perfect English. So no communication barrier. What else makes her a good stylist? 1/She carefully examined my hair for 5 min. 2/She listened to what i want and offered her professional view for that. After she finished her cut, she explained what she did and told me what kind of variation i can play with my hair and how to achieve it! 3/ scalp massage w/ warm water is great. No H20 get splashed to my face. That stands her out from other ppl who do the massage thing as a mere part of a routine. She is considerate for her customers. 4/ she gets a good artisitic sense. You can tell she knows how to get you pretty and she WANTS to make you pretty. I found out that she is also into photography, make-up and facials. No pushing for those service though. I just want to let you know that ppl with those background is more like an artistic than a "hair-cutter". I paid #45 plus tip. I think the price is fair for the level of expertise and the modern setting of the salon. Interestingly, code-5 is right next to my fave bookstore. I mean, door-to-door. And i have never noticed it b4. I will definitely return. And thanks for the other yelper. I was reminded that they don't take credit card. If you're willing to try something new, she will give you the perfect style that will look good for you. NOTE: She only works on Friday-Sunday. I'm from Irvine and it's definitely worth the trip. Jenny is always my favorite hair stylist since my cousin introduced her to me 5 years ago.I tried some other places in downtown, beverly hills and korean town because her salon was pretty far from me at that time ( glad her new location is closer to where I live), but yeah, I can not find any hair stylist that can replace her. I introduced her to a diverse group of friends including; Asians, Americans, and Europeans and everybody just simply loves her. Jenny's fashion is always one step ahead of the other hair stylists, I remember back 2 years ago, she gave me a new style which was shaved both sides and the back of my head and left the top hair longer and had some texture on it, it is very common now but back 2 years ago, it was so new and gave me such a fresh look. Everyone loved it, some of my friends even got the same haircut later. I am a lazy but adventurous kind of guy ( go sagittarius! ), I am always tired of picking up a hair style，and love to change my hair style once in a while, Jenny is really helpful about it. I don't even need to say anything, she will always give me the hair cut that fits me the best, and every time different. It never fails. I remember 10 months ago I was going to get a hair cut from her before I headed to London for 3 months, Jenny gave me a totally different cut, I was a little worried that it would be too extreme, but Jenny said " We need to show the Brits that we Americans also got fashion." with confidence. So, the Londoners loved my hair, I kept getting compliments about my hair. I was very satisfied. :) But if you know what you want, it is very easy to communicate with Jenny too, she will give you suggestions. Compare to other hair stylists, another thing I notice about Jenny's work is, Jenny barely uses those electric hair clipper to trim your hair, she usually uses just scissors. I think using scissors requests more work and also it exams how skillful the hair stylists are. So I hate them using the hair clippers, I think whoever use it , they just try to be lazy. You don't want to pay a lot of money for just getting hair clippered in 2 seconds. so yeah, I 100% recommend Jenny :) If you haven't tried her yet, you should. read more

this place merged with chez moi and i followed my stylist johnny here. i've been going to him for 5 years now and my cousin has been going to him for 17 years. he is the ONLY person i trust with my hair. i have to agree with caren. i don't even know what i want until johnny cuts my hair. this last time i went in to chop off 7 inches of my hair; i was like "i want it short but still want to be able to tie it up" and he gave me a sweet haircut, very short and i was barely able to tie it up. perfect length. everyone who has seen it gave me compliments. he totally knows what he's doing!! i'm giving johnny 5 stars obviously. however, i had a rather unsatisfying shampoo here by a girl i've never seen before - i'm guessing she's from code five, so i'll give them three because the interior decoration was nice. i've never had such terrible shampooing in my entire life actually. there was no method in her shampooing (i.e. symmetry), kind of like just scratching my scalp where ever she wanted. when i opened my eyes several times to see what she was doing she wasn't even looking at me, but off at some other people at the other side of the salon. and half the time i was screaming in my head like omg can you please massage where i need you to and stop scratching the same place over and over cause it's starting to burn?? read more

Chez Moi popped my expensive haircut/color cherry. I used to always get my hair cut for cheap at like Fantastic Sam's or Supercuts but at the ripe age of 20, I decided it was time to get a real cut. I remember my stylist was Kenny, I don't know if he's still there. He was working part-time at a Beverly Hills salon as well. I told him I wanted an asian mullet at the time, and he found a way to make it work with my face. He also helped me choose a pretty reddish brown for my hair color. After spending most of my day there-- with having to color/cut/wash/dry etc, I left that place feeling like a different person. I just feel bad that I didn't know proper tipping etiquette for expensive haircuts, and so I didn't tip him enough now that I think back. Was referred by a friend and went to Jenny last week for a much needed hair cut and she did a fantastic job! I think what I really appreciated was how much time she spent on my hair. When I first sat down in the chair, we talked about how I like to style my hair and how I want it cut. She spent a fair amount of time "feeling out" my hair as if to see what the last stylist did. I explained what I wanted and showed her some pictures of hairstyles I liked, then she got to work. Her assistant gave me a fantastic hair wash and I love the sinks there! The hair wash is probably my favorite part of getting a hair cut and the sinks there support your head really well lol anyway, Jenny ended up spending about 40 minutes cutting my hair which is much more time than I expected. And I felt really comfortable telling her I wanted it a little bit shorter after she dried it. Jenny did a great job layering my hair and I would recommend her to my friends in a heart beat. Can't beat the price either--$45 before tip. FYI-cards are for $50 and over. Also, Jenny is not much of a talker, which is how I like it! read more
