Chez Nous is, quite literally, a very hidden gem. This woman-owned French experience switches up its handwritten menu daily - two appetizers, two entrees, two desserts. Simplicity at it's absolute best. That said, if you're hoping to plan your meal in advance, this is not your place. You'll need reservations, but there's no telling what the meal options will be during your visit. If you have a liberal palate and an open-mind, you will surely find the experience of Chez Nous very exciting. I don't recall the entire menu on our visit - I know one of the appetizers was clams. The entrée choices were Chicken Thighs or Grouper, and the desserts were a lemon cake and a salted caramel tart. Our party of three all opted for the Grouper, and it was a tasty time. We sat in a patio adorned with string lights and portable outdoor heaters. The atmosphere was refreshing, if not just a little on the chilly side. We ordered our libations of choice from a selection of wines and beers, and patiently waited for our meals. You can see right in through the kitchen windows from the patio, it was honestly just fascinating to have a peek at the food prep. The fish was very good. It had a crunchy, flavorful topped coating, and was served with a pureed root vegetable that paired perfectly. The desserts, on the other hand, were disappointing. I rarely order desserts when I dine out, and when I do, I want them to be worth the price and the calories. I, unfortunately, found the lemon cake to be very dry and underwhelming. It was served with berries and cream which did help, but the cake itself was just not really...worth the calories. The salted caramel tart had an incredible texture, and the crust was flaky and delicious, but the flavor of the salted caramel was just barely there. It was more of just a cream tart, with a whiff of caramel and almost no saltiness at all. Again - it was good - just not what we expected. Overall, I loved my visit to Chez Nous. I would bring a blanket if you're dining outside, and I would come prepared to spend a pretty penny. All my husband had to say was "pick a nice place for lunch" and Chez Nous was my immediate answer! It will not be hard to imagine and believe that you are actually sitting and having a delicious gourmet lunch somewhere in France! Chez Nous is nestled inside a historic Charleston single and tucked away and in off Coming Street. The tiny Chez Nous sign that hangs on Coming Street will lead you into a large driveway and ends at this lovely restaurant. Parking is available along Coming Street only. As their menu changes daily you will either have to lookup today's menu offerings on Facebook or call the restaurant. They will be happy to share with you " what's cooking!" Book your table on RESY. We were seated in the downstairs bar area and as our reservation was made for 2:00 pm it was nice and quiet and we felt very comfortable. The second floor provides more cozy tables. Weather permitting Chez Nous offers an outside "community table" which you will pass upon entering the restaurant. Be sure to look around at the interesting architecture ~ the wood beams, exposed brick and plank floors ~ so VERY CHARLESTON! Oooops I forgot to photograph the rustic restroom doors which simply state "toilette"on the front of them! Are we IN FRANCE?? On this particular day the Chef offered a fish entree and a duck breast so we chose the seared Halibut with tomato and shallots; included were butterbeans, green beans and fingerling potatoes ~ all which rounded out the plate.. great presentation! I told the server if I had a spoon I would've finished off the rest of the au jus! Crispy fresh bread is served and I always ask for olive oil to accompany and they served a nice amount of good quality olive oil which was much appreciated. The salad of the day was an orange salad with chive and crème fraiche.. I happen to love frisées lettuce so from the start I was very impressed. We wanted to finish our lunch on a high so we ordered the white meringue in vanilla caramel sauce and it was super! If you are looking for more of a gourmet experience with superior ingredients and professional staff I recommend a visit to Chez Nous. Guaranteed to be memorable. Is this a really really really great place in Charleston to have a really really decadent dinner and be surrounded by romance? OUI! I did so much research like I do with all our trips and CHEZ NOUS came coming up. Surprisingly they had a few somewhat negative reviews. Most of them had to do with the portion size. I hate to say it but quality food is going to cost a little more. You can't supersize here, not that kind of place. My hubby and I shared the app, each had a main and shared dessert, couple of glasses of wine and we were set! This place had made it to one of the best restaurants I have eaten at here in Charleston! First off, be sure to get a reservation ahead of time. There are indoor and outdoor seating. I'm glad I chose indoor seating because it ended up raining the day we came. My boyfriend and I sat at the two-seated high bar table because all of the dining tables were booked. But, I will say that whether you sit at the bar, high bar table (like we did) or at the dining table, you can still have a comfortable and intimate experience. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. Her composure really added to the classy vibe to this place. Their menu changes daily with 6 dishes: 2 appetizers, 2 mains, and 2 desserts (you can add espresso with your dessert too!). Appetizers are typically $18-$25. Mains are ~$35-$45. Desserts are $12-13. Check out their Instagram to see their menu that they post daily! Here's what we ordered that day: Celery Mostarda w/ Ricotta -- We shared this appetizer. I'm not the biggest fan of celery but this blew my mind. The celery mostarda was sweet and paired well with the savoriness of the whipped ricotta. They also provided extra baguettes when we ran out. Coulotte Steak with Tarragon Sauce -- We each ordered this dish for ourselves. This is my first time having coulotte steak. It was so juicy and tender, and yet it had a very light feel to it. Baked Meringue w/ Lemon Curd -- We shared this dessert and each had an espresso. I need to make this dish myself because I still think about it to this day. Absolutely incredible food -- nothing overly fancy, just great techniques and flavor profiles. Favorite hidden gem and such a romantic little spot! Every day Chef Jill Mathias' beautifully handwritten menus adorn the tables. Each day there are only two options for appetizer, entree, and dessert for both lunch and dinner. So I recommend coming Herr with someone who isn't picky and is adventurous, so that you can really enjoy what the menu has to offer. There are only about 36 seats inside and 20 communal seats outside in the walled garden, so it can get easily booked up at peak times of day or times of year. They're on Resy, so you can make a digital reservation! Outside of food, there's also a wine menu for you to enjoy, should you want a drink. Service is great and the ambiance is cute and rustic! Don't be surprised when you see a business card for Malagon in your check book, as that's the sister restaurant of Chez Nous (and absolutely delicious as well). read more

We had a really amazing dinner here. I was very skeptical coming in -- the menu style here (only a couple relatively simple dishes per day) is something that just seems incredibly hard to pull off, but they pull it off really well. The night we came, our apps were clams and capers in an amazing broth and a ricotta dip topped with celery and served with some excellent crusty bread. The entrees were a roast chicken dish and fried flounder, and the desserts were a blueberry tart and a caramel budino. The apps were both incredible (especially the ricotta, but we were also more or less drinking the remaining broth from the clams), and we loved both entrees as well. I really liked the budino, but we were both lukewarm on the blueberry dessert. It's all kind of moot for a following visit anyway, since the menu is different everyday, but I will be very excited to make another bet on the menu being great next time around. read more

It's appropriate that Chez Nous is tucked away in the residential streets of Charleston, because this restaurant strikes at the heart of French home cooking. With a menu that rotates daily (two apps, two entrees, two desserts), every dining experience here is fresh and unique. My partner and I came, saw, and conquered the whole menu -- and you should, too. To start, we had the greens with onion and gruyere as well as the beef carpaccio. The salad's onions were evenly balanced by the gruyere, and the watercress blended every flavor expertly. The beef carpaccio was quite flavorful. For our main, we had the fish with herb butter and the duck with turnips and cabbage. The fish was delicious (flaky skin, flavor-packed butter) but the duck was even better -- a perfect medium rare that nearly melted in our mouths. The pate a choux and the chocolate tart were tasty desserts to top off the evening. Be sure to snag a reservation -- the venue is intimate (and popular) so seating fills up quickly. Three stars...four if I'm being generous. This restaurant doesn't rise to a Michelin star level, but the prices do. The restaurant hand-scribes each menu per day, and there are two mains offered each day. On the day we went, the braised short ribs were excellent and the fish pasta was just ok; two of our diners could've made it better at home...this I'm absolutely sure of. The desserts were the highlight of the evening. The service was great, but honestly I don't quite get the whole "communal table" concept. We paid $400 for the four of us. We've done communal in Europe many, many, many times; when the price is €12 per person for a schnitzel and a local white wine, it makes total sense. At this price, it fails. read more

However, it is furnished like an Amish torture chamber and feels like it. She selects from Italian, Spanish or French cuisine. The food was pretty but very overthought. She's trying too hard. And it comes across as pretentious. First, the food: Two offerings on the menu for the evening ; one was chicken thighs in a chimichurrie sauce - $38 and two, a fish dish for $48. Although the thighs were prepared very crispy, as described, they were simply two chicken thighs on a standard sauce .Add to this, we shared a burrata dressed with a tangy olive oil & savory dressing , this was nothing special either. The worst part of the evening , however? was where we were seated. We were excited to try this intimate little restaurant tucked away in an old house. Service was very friendly from the moment we arrived, and the server was very knowledgeable about the menu, which changes daily. Between the two of us, we tried both appetizers, both desserts and one entree. The appetizers definitely stole the show. I never knew turnips could taste so delicious. But one HUGE PROBLEM: Our server constantly touched his nose. Like every 10 seconds. Sometimes it was just a quick scratch on the side, while other times it was a full-on pinch with his hand. It was disgusting. I kept thinking about how he was handling our plates and silverware. I was tempted to ask him to wash his hands but didn't have the nerve. And anyway, he did it so often that it wouldn't have mattered. He could never have washed his hands often enough. I wish someone would point this out to him. I noticed on the wine list that everything was also from those 3 countries. We booked our reservation a month in advance on Resy. They offer the same menu for lunch and dinner. I wish that I would have ordered one of everything on the menu. Seriously it was that good! For my appetizer I chose a roasted chickpea salad which was delicious. Can't go wrong with roasted chickpeas, red onion, cucumber, roasted peppers and a soft boiled egg in a yummy vinaigrette dressing. I used the complimentary bread to soak up the dressing too...yummy! For my entree I chose the trout that was sourced from the waters of N Carolina and stuffed with crispy Serrano ham on top of roasted fingerling potatoes, escarole in a lemon butter sauce. Best tasting fish that I've had ever! It's was a whole fish minus the head, tail and bones. Had a glass of Riesling from France to wash it all down! For dessert I chose the puff pastry with fresh whipped cream and a blueberry compote. It was good but I wish that I would have chosen the Fontainebleau which was a house made cheese with sugar and vanilla drizzled with honey and topped with strawberries. The fish was perfect texture and the duck was "better than any steak I have ever had." And I've had some pretty good steak from KC! Went with my husband and we had literallly "one of everything" since there are two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts offered each night. First courses were this most unctious delicious creamy polenta topped with a poached egg and a delicious take on a nicoise salad. Two VERY different flavor profiles. Entrees were the steak a poivre with a green peppercorn sauce and a wreckfish with an olive tapenade. Both were divine. Since moving to Charleston last summer, wreckfish has quickly become my favorite fish. Desserts were a fig custard and pistachio semifreddo. We had a lovely bottle of wine to accompany the whole meal. Service is top notch and the ambiance is very true - this is what dining in France is like - not fancy or stuffy, but homey and cozy. We had 7 glasses of white wine between two of us for lunch, and we're usually not even white wine drinkers! Mussels were one of the best we've had in years, and the flounder was done just right. For our 6 year anniversary we wanted to go somewhere special and I've heard a lot of rave reviews about Chez Nous. We made an early reservation and were seated in the upstairs dining room. They're located in a Charleston single house, which provides nice ambiance. I know this is a small space, but it was tough to even talk to each other when the table next to us was about 2 feet away. It felt like we were on a double date with strangers and that's not exactly the vibe I was looking for on our anniversary. I was excited about the concept of the handwritten menu and only having a few choices that rotate every day. They have a choice of 2 appetizers, 2 mains, and 2 desserts. When we went, we had the salmon tartare to start, got both of the entrees, and one dessert. The entrees were a grilled skirt steak with paprika and sea bass with braised greens. For dessert, we had a cherry tart. After all of the hype that this place has received, I definitely had high expectations. The salmon tartare was delicious, clean, and classic. The entrees, while both well seasoned, just didn't pop enough for me. I was expecting to be blown away and the food was just okay. Again, this was just our experience on one trip, but on our anniversary I was hoping for more of a wow factor. This was the first restaurant we visited in Charleston. It's very unique because it is essentially a very old house converted into a restaurant. The indoor area seems very small downstairs but they also have an upstairs which I didn't see. The outdoor seating looks gorgeous but unfortunately it was raining on the day we went. They have a very limited menu - only 6 items the day we went (2 salads, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts). The menu is either handwritten or used a font that I found difficult to read. For 2 people we ordered 1 salad and both entrees. They start you off with bread (but nothing to go with it like butter for some reason...). Sautéed peppers with ham salad ($19): 5/5 this salad was absolutely incredible! All the veggies were perfectly crispy and the thin slices of meat paired really well with the veggies Fish with some kind of sauce ($38): 5/5 this was also very good! The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I wish there was more fish in the dish. For $38 I thought it was a bit overpriced but the flavors were on point Pork belly with lentils ($34): 3/5 I found the pork belly cuts to be too fatty so I couldn't eat too much of this Overall I enjoyed visiting Chez nous but thought it was a little overpriced. I had such high hopes for Chez Nous. One person had wrote that this place was a reason alone to make a trip to Charleston so me and my girls HAD to check it out. It had great potential but unfortunately I was let down. Chez Nous has a daily changing menu so I'm my day I go the pork chop. It was good but nothing to write home about at all.. can't say anything really stood out to me from this dinner. Also side note, if you want bread and butter on your table at the start of dinner apparently it's only comes out if you order an app (aka salad).... That makes zero sense to me. This is a great location for a quiet semi romantic dinner. The place was definitely hyped up a bit more than what I was expecting and is on par with southbound. The evening that we visited, the menu was phenomenal. Both of the desserts were delicious, and the staff were extremely accommodating and attentive. This is an expensive restaurant and I'm not sure I would return for the food- but I would for the ambiance. This place was truly special. A special occasion restaurant with fine service. Other than the English language, you could mistake yourself for being at a a small, tucked away cafe in France. We had reservations for the outdoor patio, and since it was a chilly night, they had heating lamps and blankets for each guest. We felt nice and cozy! The evening my fiancé and I were lucky enough to snag a table, Chef prepared duck as the featured entrée and it was otherworldly. I have lived in Asia and have spent an inordinate amount of time enjoying fine dining in Beijing where duck is a delicacy and the crucial execution of the dish was masterly done in Chef's kitchen.
