This quaint, historic restaurant (housed in a charming 1835 single house tucked down an alley) immediately won us over. We went in with minimal expectations after a recommendation--just knowing the menu changes daily with only two choices each for appetizer, entrée, and dessert. When the server read the handwritten menu (beautiful but purposely illegible script!), we were a bit gun-shy. But the food turned out to be some of the best we've ever had. Chez Nous feels like a little secret. The 200 year old house, tucked between streets, reads as a true hideaway. We dined at night, when the patio glowed with lights, heaters, and long tables that felt instantly charming and warm. Inside, I loved the window at the end of the house looking straight into the kitchen. It felt like a front row seat at *The Bear*. The handwritten menu was a beautiful, elevated touch. The food was excellent. The burrata was the best I've had in ages, perfectly balanced with fresh, elegant flavors. The peppers with anchovies delivered a bolder, more dissonant note, but it worked beautifully. The bread was wonderful, the pork schnitzel hearty and satisfying, and my favorite dish was the snapper. Perfectly prepared, it came with a creamy but light sauce over a bed of onions. My only critique was the non alcoholic wine. Sometimes you go to a restaurant for a meal, and sometimes you go for an experience. The meal we had at Chez Nous went beyond a simple dinner. It was an experience from start to finish. We made reservations for the courtyard and I am so glad we did since it was perfect October weather. Tony and Hilton took care of us and did an exceptional job. They were attentive without being overbearing. The menu was difficult to read but it wasn't really needed as Hilton explained every single dish and was super knowledgeable on everything. We started with the veal sweetbreads with turnips and the salted cod stuffed peppers with Yukon gold potato puree. Both were exceptional and unlike anything I have ever tasted. They served fresh bread at the beginning and I loved dipping it in the sauce that came with the stuffed peppers. For entrees, my mom and I got the swordfish with vanilla saffron sauce. I was curious about this because I had never heard of vanilla being incorporated in a dish with protein. However, they did a remarkable job of bringing the ingredients together. The vanilla was vague but just enough to be identified. The swordfish was cooked beautifully. I don't usually lean towards ordering fish at a restaurant but I would order this again and again. My dad ordered the pork chop with chanterelle mushrooms, spinach, and walnut vinaigrette. I was lucky enough to snag a bite. It was cooked to perfection with the sous vide technique. It was cooked so perfectly I fear any other pork chop I will ever eat will pale in comparison. For dessert we once again tried both offerings-the chocolate meringue and the lemon rosemary cake. The chocolate meringue had a chocolate sauce and chopped pistachios on top. As someone who doesn't usually like meringue, I loved this dessert. The lemon rosemary cake was perfect and had a creamy lemon curd on top. I couldn't decide which one I liked more. My mom got the wine pairing with her meal and said they did a great job identifying the wines that complimented the meal well. I do recommend bringing mosquito spray if you are sitting on the courtyard. We were eaten alive. The communal table in the courtyard in a unique concept because you can mingle with other people dining at the restaurant but since everyone is being seated at different times be prepared to hear the menu being thoroughly described about 7 different times. If that is something that would bother you I recommend getting an individual table. The courtyard was also cool because there was a window looking into the kitchen where you could see the chef work. Service was excellent and attentive. When we got our dessert my mom did have to wait a while to get her last glass of her wine pairing for quite a bit even after asking. For the price point, the wine should be served immediately with the dish. Total was $377. $408 total with tip. Overall great experience. Would definitely come back. read more

Such a very special place. They take so much pride in serving such wonderful food! We sat at the big table on the patio, fortunate to be a beautiful night outside.. towards the end however we were getting bit by mosquitoes. I decided to do the wine pairing with dinner. The first two glasses were perfect. Our server explained the menu which was handwritten and Hilton, our server did a great job of explaining in detail the menu which changes every day. We did have one of each appetizer. We enjoyed the stuffed peppers and the sweet breads. I chose the swordfish with vanilla sauce over the pork chop which my husband had. We finally made it to Chez Nous! Got a reservation on the patio for our anniversary. The patio is super cute and rather than sitting at the communal table, we were seated off to the side at a table for two. The only thing to note is that my husband was in view of a large street light the whole time, but we weren't going to complain. Service was friendly and prompt - the server reads you the menu of the day, and you're at its mercy. Next time I'll probably try to get bar seats after seeing the menu so I can choose my favorite menu! This night's menu was good - steak, fish, celery salad, foie gras, olive oil ice cream, rice pudding. We went here with our friends who now live in Charleston. Good thing because we never would have found it on our own. The location is off the street almost in a back alley. We were seated upstairs in a very small dining area. All the food is prepared downstairs in the kitchen and the wait staff have to bring it upstairs. The food was excellent as was the service. AVery wonderful selections which change daily. The menu handwritten, so a little difficult to read. But fortunately our server told us all the dishes. It is a three course meal. Chez Nous has been at the top of my list for quite some time and it was simply spectacular. We went for birthday date night and couldn't believe we were just a block off of King Street. The outdoor area is so quaint and dreamy. They have a long community table and three two tops. They honored our request for one of the two tops and it was perfect. As sweet as the interior was I just loved the outside feel and would love to do a girls night at the community table. Unfortunately my husband has a nut allergy so we were a bit limited in what we could order but we got one of each entree and loved them both. The bread service was also wonderful. My one complaint is that our server was not as attentive as the other staff outside. Nonetheless, we loved our meal and the vibes and are already planning our next trip back. read more

We went here for my birthday celebration and it was lovely. I was a little upset that I accidentally booked the bar instead of a table but everything turned out great. I believe the bartenders name was Nicki and she was super helpful. We ended up ordering one of everything on the menu and I decided on the wine pairing. This is a super quaint hidden gem that I had driven past multiple times and heard so much about, so I pleased to finally get to go in. The food wasn't exactly what I expected but it was tasty. I had the hangar steak for my entree and the tuna crudo for my appetizer. The crudo truly stole the show. My mom had the fish and the appetizer with squash and pine nuts and basil. Thought I already left a review, but here goes again. The ambience is cool, an old house with neat wood details in the ceiling. Wait staff was friendly and provided good service. The food was prepared well enough - it's hard to go wrong with sous vide for tenderness - but I imagine the night you go is the main determinant of whether you get something truly special. You get what the chef felt like creating that day: a choice from two main dishes and sides, and since you generally need reservations, there's no way to know what your choices will be in advance. I chose lamb which came with a few vegetables, and asparagus on the side. The lamb was very tender, but there was nothing unique or that said 'European' about it, and the sauce it came with dominated the vegetables, so that everything tasted the same. I also asked for lemon to cut the saltiness. The asparagus was just asparagus prepared in a typical way. Definitely nothing that made me think it was worth the hype and wait for a reservation, but perfectly respectable. Now, maybe if I'd been there on a night when sweet eats were served... read more

The menu changes daily based on what ingredients the chef decides to use and she does an excellent job. Everything we ate was beautifully composed and tasted amazing. We have no dietary restrictions, so this limited and "released day of" (check instagram) menu was of no concern when making our reservation, but chatting with the bartender, he indicated they do their best and can typically accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions. Disclaimer: this is not for the food since we never got to try it. We got to the restaurant for our reservation and were told that it was going to rain and they wouldn't be able to accommodate us inside if it started raining while we were eating. We did not have rain on our forecast and weren't given any sort of heads up in advance. I would've expected an awning to protect from the rain or some type of accommodation. It was a special occasion dinner, so especially a bummer and we were very put off by the attitude about it. Also hated to waste money ubering there. Can't comment on the food since we ended up leaving, but just a word of caution for anyone making a reservation outside. Also, I'm pregnant and couldn't eat either app and their accommodation was just to take the prosciutto off their melon and prosciutto app (essentially making it fruit salad). Not sure why they couldn't sear the scallops or pan crisp the prosciutto. Just another word of caution for those who may have some dietary restrictions - maybe not the place to go. read more

WOW the food!!! Yes it comes off a little crazy because you can't read the menu - it's hand written every morning in English and the language of the dish origin - and only have 2 options for each course but my goodness is it worth it. This is a hidden gem that feels like a small European bistro, serving a changing menu focused on dishes from France, Italy, and Spain. Our server - Hylton -was incredibly helpful. He broke down he menu for us, gave recommendations based on our preferences and was just overall a joy to talk to. The food was fresh, flavorful, light yet filling. Chez Nous is a splendid little restaurant built in a former house found off the beaten path. Having walked here from my hotel I appreciated the ambiance and also glad I didn't take from the limited parking. The restaurant has an old world charm as though I could imagine an inn like this several hundred years ago with its lower ceilings, hand written menus, and cute bar. It is super charming. The service was delightful. I was warmly greeted upon entering and seated at the bar. The bartender was very pleasant to speak with, though initially a little off-putting because I tried explaining that a much more expensive glass of wine would be wasted on me due to my weakened sense of smell and he tried underplaying my explanation as though he either wanted to sell a more expensive wine or he didn't believe me. But that was the only interaction that didn't mesh well - otherwise it was a fabulous experience sitting here. And they do have an amazing wine selection! This is absolutely where you want to go if you love wine. The food was amazing. As many noted already the menu is not static. It is constantly changing, but I can tell you the fish was cooked perfectly - light, flakey, and tender without being dry and no errant bones. The cake also was delightful! So the beauty of this place (in my ne'er to be humble opinion) is the size of the menu. Two appetizers, two entrées, and two desserts. Along with that there is a good size wine list not too small and not a telephone book-like-impossible-to-read tome. This makes it very easy for me, we order one of everything! The other good thing about that menu is that it kind of forces me to order things that I possibly would not order on my own. For instance last night the appetizers were an asparagus dish and another dish that had peppers olives capers and anchovies with the dollop of Barata cheese served with crostinis. They were delicious, nothing like peppers and anchovies! The entrées were seabass with trout Road served on a lemon Citrus sauce and the other was above a bavette with a wonderful creamed potato. Desserts were a chocolate meringue topped with whipped cream, a sauce and some pistachios. The other dessert where a simple two scoops of mint ice cream. Nothing like a pallet cleanser of minty ice cream! This was washed down with a bottle of brut rosé Cava. Service for us has always been really good here, very friendly very informative and very professional. The only downside I can come across is the place is tiny. I guess that adds to its charm. If you are claustrophobic, then it may come across as a bit disturbing how small the place actually is. But if that doesn't bother you then I suggest you put this on your bucket list for Charleston dining and I don't believe you will be disappointed. read more

We walked all over Charleston on Saturday and this was our plan for lunch. We sat outside and it felt like we were sitting in Paris for the afternoon. My wife and I visited Chez Nous on a quiet weekday evening after easily making a reservation in advance. The restaurant is off the street and a little hidden. Our Uber driver, though, had no trouble finding the place. The restaurant is in a quaint old two-story home. Upon arriving, we were escorted upstairs to our table. The room upstairs has perhaps six tables placed relatively close together. After being seated, we were given the bilingual handwritten menu from the chef. Their menu is different daily and consists of two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts. You can pick and choose from that list and don't have to get one from each category. Our server told us that some folks who don't like surprises will check the daily menu online and decide if they want to come for dinner that night. My wife and I are okay with surprises and just ordered everything on the menu to share. We started with a radicchio salad and broccoli rabi. The salad was colorful, with a soft-boiled egg with a super yellow yolk. Both dishes were enjoyable. The entrees this evening were a fried flounder with leeks and chicken with tarragon. Again, both dishes were wonderful, but I gave a nod to the chicken. The fried skin on the thigh was very crispy and tasty. I'm not a fan of dark meat, but this boneless piece may sway my opinion. Amazing!!! First of all, the staff was incredible friendly. There weren't any vegetarian options on the menu but our waitress checked with kitchen and they were able to make a special pasta (cacio e Pepe) for me. All of the other dishes were delicious - my fiancé and I split both apps and both desserts. He had the steak dish with root vegetables and said both "were cooked to perfection." Overall a great experience. I took myself here for an early birthday treat. The Good: The leg of lamb was easily the most tender lamb I ever ate, & I've eaten a LOT of lamb over the years. (It was first seared and then sous vide, according to my server.) The temperature/color were absolutely perfect; I didn't even have to ask/specify how I like it. The prune custard cake was divine, & the cappuccino I enjoyed with it was probably the best cappuccino I ever tasted. The portions were super generous, which was a pleasant surprise. My server (who was the bartender) had a great personality & was very kind. The hostess (manager, possibly?) had a wonderful personality also. (The servers also look super cute in their navy-&-white striped shirts.) The Not-Quite-So-Good: The haricot verts salad wasn't quite to my liking, though I don't fully fault the restaurant for this: I think I just prefer thick, crunchy green beans over the delicate French variety. (Also, to be fair, the haricots verts were not actually overcooked; they were a gorgeous shade of green.) I do wish there had been a bit more parmesan in my salad; tbh I had to actually look for it, but didn't find much. I was also disappointed that the mushrooms were just basic raw sliced mushrooms, but I will say the escarole was crunchy & super fresh, like it had just been picked. (Also I may have just been suffering FOMO after seeing the appetizer of the party next to me, who had ordered the whitefish salad with grilled toast; it looked amazing.) The lighting was very dim for my taste, although I was dining alone- for someone on a romantic date, I'm sure it's perfect. The music was a bit loud for me personally, but at least the music selection was appropriate & enjoyable- light French jazz? (I'm terrible at identifying musical styles.) Also I tend to be extra sensitive to noise, & clearly the volume wasn't bothering anyone else. My only other caveat: when I placed my reservation online, I wish there had been another option besides bar seating. I have joint/sensory problems, & I find that barstools are often uncomfortable, especially when they don't have backs, as these did. Summary: if you are open-minded, I would recommend this experience, & I look forward to going back. Early reservation on a chilly night. Parking is always an issue with downtown restaurants. (Do NOT follow google maps to the adjacent parking area - it does NOT belong to the restaurant. Park on the street or the garage not far away!) So we were a bit tardy, but was not a problem and we were greeted warmly and led upstairs. Some brave folks were dining al fresco under the heaters. The upstairs is crowded but has a cozy feel, and the service was prompt, friendly and helpful. The menu is limited and changes every evening, so you only have two choices in each category. The starter was a truffle toast, and honestly was underwhelming for the price. But the pan sautéed trout with buttery lemon sauce was EXQUISITE! The whole fish- boned with the skin on- was just perfectly prepared! My partner's short rib was very good as well, but did not outshine the trout. There is a nice variety and pretty extensive wine selection as well, with expected downtown prices. The service was prompt but unobtrusive. The four of us shared the chocolate meringue dessert which was just the right amount. Worth a trip back, but will consider parking remotely and ride-sharing in. read more

All my husband had to say was "pick a nice place for lunch" and Chez Nous was my immediate answer! It will not be hard to imagine and believe that you are actually sitting and having a delicious gourmet lunch somewhere in France! Chez Nous is nestled inside a historic Charleston single and tucked away and in off Coming Street. The tiny Chez Nous sign that hangs on Coming Street will lead you into a large driveway and ends at this lovely restaurant. Parking is available along Coming Street only. As their menu changes daily you will either have to lookup today's menu offerings on Facebook or call the restaurant. They will be happy to share with you " what's cooking!" Book your table on RESY. We were seated in the downstairs bar area and as our reservation was made for 2:00 pm it was nice and quiet and we felt very comfortable. The second floor provides more cozy tables. Weather permitting Chez Nous offers an outside "community table" which you will pass upon entering the restaurant. Be sure to look around at the interesting architecture ~ the wood beams, exposed brick and plank floors ~ so VERY CHARLESTON! Oooops I forgot to photograph the rustic restroom doors which simply state "toilette"on the front of them! Are we IN FRANCE?? On this particular day the Chef offered a fish entree and a duck breast so we chose the seared Halibut with tomato and shallots; included were butterbeans, green beans and fingerling potatoes ~ all which rounded out the plate.. great presentation! I told the server if I had a spoon I would've finished off the rest of the au jus! Crispy fresh bread is served and I always ask for olive oil to accompany and they served a nice amount of good quality olive oil which was much appreciated. The salad of the day was an orange salad with chive and crème fraiche.. I happen to love frisées lettuce so from the start I was very impressed.
