Came here during a visit to Charleston. Highly recommend getting a res, especially if you're going on the weekend. The res we made was for the communal table outside, but we got a 2-top. Their menu changes daily and is written in a beautiful script. We tried both apps - the squid and tartar - and I loved both. The squid was cooked perfectly, and the tartar was seasoned very well. The mains - duck and fish - were also solid. Strong cooking technique is apparent in these dishes. We shared one dessert - a rich chocolate cake with ice cream, and it was delish. Also opted for the wine pairing, which I highly recommend for a complete experience! The service was great - competent and attentive but not overbearing. I don't understand why people love this place. The food was at best mediocre. My first course was salt cod that was drowning in a vinegar sauce. My companion had a squash salad that also had too much dressing. The gnudi in tomato sauce was ok but I've had better from Lean Cuisine. My fish was adequate. Both desserts were bad: lemon tart should have had some cream; it was dry and had no lemon flavor. The zabaglione had way too much booze. We added the zabaglione to the lemon tart to make both desserts palatable. Service was fine. Definitely will not return. read more

We were recommended to visit this place from a friend that is a chef. I have been following on Instagram for awhile and Could. Not. Wait. to see what our menu would be! We had a later reservation, but arrived early and they were able to seat us. The host was very kind and accommodating. I checked Instagram (where they post the daily menu) in the morning and was so pumped for our meal. We sat at a table in the bar area. Not that it bothers us, but it is dark in here. So excuse the not great photos. The bathroom however, is bright white! Hah. We started with the clams. The broth was simple but incredible and every single clam was plump and tender, not at all chewy. I could have drank the broth. We then both ordered the snapper with chorizo and Carolina rice. The fish was the most perfectly cooked fish I have had and the rice and chorizo + sauce was addicting, I truly did not want it to end. My husband and I as a rule typically don't order the same thing, but I am so glad we did this time. I don't think we even talked in between the first bite and last bite. This place is incredible. If you're looking for a standout all-around dining experience, Chez Nous is your spot. This is the restaurant that I bring my visiting friends to (and they ask to go back to whenever they're in town) and the restaurant I go to for nice occasions. Reservation considerations: It's tough to get a reservation here, so plan ahead if you can. They open up reservations 4 weeks ahead of time. Set a calendar reminder. If you didn't make a reservation, the outside community table may be available. Also, maximum 4 people per reservation. Atmosphere: A French-style restaurant built in a former house downtown. Very quaint and intimate. No parking lot, but two hour street parking surrounds the restaurant. Food: Daily rotating menu keeps you on your toes. This is fun for adventurous eaters but may be an issue for picky eaters. Each day the chef creates a menu with two apps, two entrees, and two desserts. When making the reservation, you won't know what the options are. Each morning they post their daily menu as well as pictures of each of the dishes on Instagram. I recommend for a party of two, getting one of each and for a party of four, getting two of each. Note that drink options are a wide variety of wine, liquors, and coffees. Service: Fantastic service every time. You can tell the wait staff care about the restaurant and want to make sure you enjoy the experience. The one restaurant that stands out most to me from my trip to Charleston is Chez Nous, a french restaurant, very authentic, both in its interior and menu. Excellent ambiance with dimmed lighting, and beautiful french music on a background, accompanied by awesome service that puts you at ease. What else do you need?.. Food, of course! The one thing I found most appealing here was the fact that the restaurant changes its menu daily, and patrons only get to choose between two appetizers, two main courses, and two desserts. It's thrilling to not quite know what to expect, wouldn't you agree? Celery Mostarda with Ricotta was our choice of an appetizer. I'm not the biggest fan of celery but my concerns melted away soon as I tasted this most tender creamy ricotta I've ever tried. Just a touch of celery that tasted as though slightly pickled, perhaps because of the mustard used in mostarda, which in turn added some fruity sweetness to the dish making the flavor more interesting. Both mains were excellent. One of them was duck, unbelievably juicy (thanks to its layer of fat) and tender, cooked in a very traditional to french cuisine way. Served medium rare with just a tiny bit of crust, in red wine jus and topped over finely chopped perfectly cooked spinach. Filling and light at the same time. The second main was Triggerfish cooked en papillote (parchment paper), which soon as opened, filled the air around with the flavor of garden vegetables - endive, tomatoes, chives, parsley. The fish itself was very fresh and butter-like soft. Last but not least - desserts! We tried both the palmieres and tarte with fudge filling. I've been to the sister restaurant malagon and I couldn't say enough good things about it. I was hesitant to try chez nous because I liked malagon so much I didn't want to risk it. I'm so mad I waited as long as I did. chez nous is incredible. It checked all the boxes for me. I love the hand written menu, that changes everyday. It only has two options for each course which I suppose could deter some but it soothed my decision making anxiety. I could tell everything we ordered was made with the most attention to detail. I was transported to a Parisian auberge with both the food and the historic house they picked to do business in. I will 100% be coming back. Wife and I ordered the pork chop and so sad it was dry, but no worries waiter brought over the manager ( I think) and offered another or to try the fish - Wreck fish was amazing and they took the 2 pork chops off the bill. Now this is what customer service is about! I will tell you that we had to have a one off on the pork chops because the table next to us had 2 chops as well and they were able to easily put there fork in and cut them. Some preparations seem simple but when sourcing the best ingredients, knowing how best to manipulate them (or how not to!) and then serving them alongside a bottle of Italian wine, is Perfection! I'd rather have a chef perfect 6 dishes than have 30+ menu items to just sit and go to waste when most people order the same items over and over again! Speaking of wine... the list is small and very reasonably priced. Be ready to try something new as you might not see a wine you know. Our table... was outside and so lovely at night. Never gave such a low rating for a decent meal. This place is quaint, a restaurant in a restored home with knowledgeable sommelier/staff. If you are a half decent cook, you can prepare the dishes that were overpriced. The only thing french is the name and the dominant portion of the wine list. I had the roast chicken accompanied by broccoli rapini. Boring I know but I was going to my favorite seafood restaurant later that evening and the only other entree was a seared snapper. If you are going to charge $27 for a plate of food, let's have some ingenuity in preparation or plating components. Two words come to mind after having an amazing dinner at Chez Nous. Shock and Awe. Not in the sense of a western country's geopolitical strategy to rally domestic support behind an unattractive venture, more in the sense of utter disbelief that we've never dined here before. From the amazing service, ambiance, to the delicious meal, everything blew me away. I feel ashamed some people will never know the joy I felt leaving Chez Nous, belly full, head full of wine, and walking the Charleston streets home to my bed. Godspeed. Place is super cute. A special dining experience. I had the full dinner and wine pairing. I appreciate that you havr tue option to mix and match or skip courses. I enjoyed the appetizer (ramp tart) and the main (scallops). Both dishes were delicious, well seasoned, not lots of fat or cream. The dessert didnt work for me at all. It was a cream puff but the filling was too thick and i found the rose flavoring too perfumed. They paired it with champagne but the notes didnt offer anything to complement the dish, which I already didnt enjoy. On its own the champagne was too toasty for me. It needed something sweet. The server offered to bring me the other dessert (strawberry mousse) but I wasn't interested. I guess this is the one risk for a restaurant like this where a course just misses. All in all I enjoyed the experience and would return. The ONLY criticism I would offer for a restaurant of this caliber and that wants to compete at these price points. Servers should be professional and mindful when complaining about other patrons and the fact that those sitting at the counter can completely hear you. At this price point service is often what makes or breaks the experience. I love the counter option but its still part of the stage and the curtain is open. read more

My fiancé and I were absolutely starving after a wedding at 10pm on a Sunday and THANK GOD for Chez Nous. We had no idea what we were signing up for but this absolute gem in downtown Charleston was some of the best food we've had on this trip. We had a reservation at 10:15 not realizing they closed at 10:30 and they were so accommodating and said that's when they stop seating and they wouldn't kick us out (southern hospitality!). The menu is a rotating one that the chef writes everyday and the food we had was amazing. Pasta was homemade, custard was thick and moist. hands down, the most amazing meal that i've had in charleston. this quaint and cozy restaurant is the perfect date spot, with its intimate lighting and ambience. our server was kind and attentive, and explained everything on the menu (so no worries if you can't decipher the handwriting) we tried everything on their 12/27 menu (save for the smoked trout salad w banyuls) and it's evident that each dish is thought out and made with care. with their daily revolving menu, it may be pointless to review the food but i'd be remiss not to mention how we used the bread to sop up the rich sauce of the fish and clashed over who got to finish the homemade pine nut ice cream. definitely would come here every day if i could read more

Had a wonderful dinner here last Thursday evening. Our reservation wasn't until 8:00, and so before dinner, we spent time across the street at the cozy Tippling House wine bar. The restaurant is in an alley and you enter through a small courtyard. There is seating in the courtyard as well as on the first and second floors. The space is tight but cozy, and despite how close the tables are to one another, it wasn't excessively loud and thus was easy to converse. There were two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts to choose from, and so we all shared to get a taste of everything. The consensus was the appetizers were the best part of the meal but everything was very good and nicely plated. The service was warm and attentive. This place is amazing!!! My girlfriend and I went here for my birthday and I honestly didn't have any expectations. This wonderful French style restaurant has a small but quaint venue. The menu changes everyday so you don't really know what options you will have until the day of. We ordered a bottle of wine and literally everything on the menu sans the desserts. The portions looked quite small at first but turned out to be filling and amazingly delicious. My first review of 2019 and what a place to review!! I've had Chez Nous on the list for a long time and finally got the chance to indulge last night. Oh my... people if you haven't been please put it on your list. It was fantastic. From the service to the ambiance, to the decor, to the glorious food and wine menu. BTW, you can bring your own wine if you wish $35 corkage. I cannot say enough. It should be a place you book for a special occasion or an intimate dinner for four, no more. The place is small and not much privacy. I'm fine with that but you can hear other conversations. It reminded me a little of Zero George (Another place you should try). Delicious dish that my boyfriend and I split as a snack (we were restaurant hopping). I believe they change their menu everyday and update it via Instagram, which is fun. Let's you really choose what you want to eat. Nothing else on the menu that day (this was back in the fall) interested us, but we were completely satisfied sitting at the bar for this fish. I will say the bar seating is pretty tight, but the place is usually fully reserved so take what you can get. :) read more

That hidden little gem that if you ask enough locals you'll find out about it. It's tucked away in a little house down a side street - but totally worth the confusion. The way it works is real unique as well. They post the menu EACH DAY so it's new and a total surprise. It's quite exciting. And hand written. A totally fun experience. The wines are all hand selected old world which I appreciate. The weekends they have a decent priced wine pairing. They have average price point full bottles as well which is always bonus. During our day we had the steak tartare and bean salad. Both delicious and flavorful. The steak was marinated in a vinegar and some spices and arranged so that you could taste all the different accompaniments. For my main I ordered the pork - super moist and tender- a little sweet but just perfect. With blanched asparagus that was so flavorful I didn't even know I was eating a vegetable. I had to order the decent - a lovey "cake" which was more like a little cannele brownie. Crunchy crispy on the outside and gooey chocolate decadence on the inside. Using a farm to table concept focused on the freshest local ingredients, there is a different daily menu with two appetizers, entrees, and desserts, posted online every morning. The wonderful and terrible part of this concept is that you truly never know what you're going to get- locals have the flexibility to pick and choose which day to go based on what dishes most appeal to their palate. Location is somewhat hidden in a residential area, in a repurposed house with a gorgeous patio and cozy interior. Lit candles and a wooden interior make for an intimate and rustic date-night experience, though they are also open for lunch and brunch (on weekends). Our appetizers were steak tartare and burrata with anchovies, both of which were wonderfully balanced, served with fresh-baked bread and crostini. The burrata was one of the creamiest I've had and the anchovies paired really well with it; my boyfriend said it's the best version of this cheese that he's had. Our entrees were the swoon-worthy skate wing with brown butter and garlic sausage with white beans. The fish dish was my preference, light but flavorful, served on a bed of soft cabbage. My guy preferred the heartier sausage dish and is already trying to persuade me to try to replicate it at home. Despite the modest-looking portions, we were too full to take in the dessert options, which were a Nutella waffle and orange sorbet with vanilla oil. I think I would have preferred the desserts featured on subsequent days, but I was not greatly intrigued by the available options- which just means we'll have to come back next time for the full three courses! Our server was personable and friendly, particularly once the tables on either side of us cleared out so she could be better heard. The wine list is great, but there are also a few beer options- the Belgian was a good pick for our meal. All in all, it was a great meal and I'll be torturing myself with their social media pages until we can return. read more

Recommended by a local chef - has to be pretty darn good to get a word from a competitor, right? The experience was wonderful. Excellent table service, excellent food, portions just right, prices in line with what you would expect for upscale dining in Charleston. The night we went they were serving braised short rib or triggerfish - we tried one of each and the favors were outstanding! As others have mentioned, the seating is VERY tight. We arrived early so we had "space" for a good conversation, but as other diners arrived it became very apparent that a private conversation was not to be had - too bad because this would be a top "date night" recommendation otherwise. My other ding (4, not 5 stars), is the lack of complete bar service - beer and wine only. While both lists are very, very good, I'd would have liked to start the super evening with a nice dirty martini!! read more
