Chez TJ is a bit hidden, as it is a cute little house on a busy street in downtown Mountain View, so it may blend in a bit. There is a parking lot across the street, as well as street parking surrounding the area, but parking may be hit or miss, depending on when you come by. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating - we were greeted warmly and treated with the best service during the whole evening. We were able to try their Pear Panna Cotta, Royal Kaluga Caviar, Fermented Gooseberry, Dill; Onagadai Tartlette, Creme Fraiche, Fingerlime, Horseradish; Brassica Veloute, Fenugreek Oil, Guanciale Powder Okinawa Sweet Potato, Perigord Black Truffle, Burrata Foam; Petite Baguette; Mushroom & Barley Tea; Squab, Cascabel Mole, Chanterelles, Winter Citrus Gel; Pain Levain, Navel Orange Ricotta; Australian Wagyu, Confit Beetroot, Smoked Parsnip, Sticky Cabbage; Strawberry Basil Mousse, Honeycomb, Strawberry Caviar, Basil Oil Palmier; Hazelnut Chouquette; and The Lime & The Coconut Ganache. We enjoyed the garden tour and trying the many drinks prior to dinner service. For the meal, we started light and wrapped up with a waygu dish. The desserts were good, but the staff miscounted and missed a portion, I ended up getting a replacement dish that didn't have 2 out of 3 of the original components. Who would've known that a Michelin star restaurant would be in an unassuming Victorian style house? That was my first thought as I entered the restaurant, but the service and food proved their worth. It was interesting how they presented the dishes in a blind tasting style, but it also made me realize I preferred to have the menu in front of me as I could appreciate the dishes more. I liked that the garden salad was presented so beautifully, and the cucumber mint cooler was so refreshing. The squab was good, but I think my favorite might have to be the lamb, which was cooked perfectly. I normally don't eat lamb but this was so good. I had an overall decent meal here the other day but in the past I've always felt this was a Michelin two-star experience at a one-star price. Last night I felt the inverse: a zero-star experience at a one-star price. Why? The food was just decent, nothing really stood out. The service was kind of chaotic. And we were in a room where I've never sat before which was kind of muggy/humid and felt crowded. But the primary reason I'm giving this two-stars instead of three is that my wagyu steak, which was oddly on a giant, empty plate, came with little insects on it. You couldn't really see them except when I tapped my knife on the plate, I saw several of these tiny insects scattering, much to my surprise and displeasure. I noticed a flower of some sort on the plate as well and decided they were aphids or such from the flower garnish, not a problem with the core meal, so I chose not to make a fuss about it and remained silent. I know everyone wants to grow a lot of ingredients in their backyard garden these days, but if that comes with backyard aphids, maybe we'd be better off with the commercial equivalents. So, given all this, I won't be back any time soon. read more

Nestled in a Victorian house in downtown Mountain View is a delicious Michelin-starred restaurant, Chez TJ, that we chose for our 15th anniversary. The food was great, and the 4-course menu was the perfect amount for us. I loved the blind tasting menu experience where we didn't know what was coming next. It was very delicious - and unexpectedly the appetizer of a potato drumstick (potato chip ice cream cone with potato ice cream). It was weird to have it as an appetizer- felt like it should have been the dessert. Again, the food was great. I have no complaints! I felt the Old Fashioned was a standout. Soft bourbon and well-matched with the garnish of fresh flowers from their garden. We really enjoyed our service with tasting notes from Ken in the early half of the dinner. read more

My partner and I were here for a dinner. He made a reservation few weeks ago and included a vegetarian meal for me. Service 4/5 - service was excellent. From the moment, we stepped in, to the way we were seated, explanation of the menu etc it was all great. Two of our courses were late but let us know ahead of time. We didn't mind it much because it gave us more time to just chat. Food 2/5 - now, I am writing this as a vegetarian. While the food was delicious, the portion was absurdly small. It barely had any protein at all. I walked out of the restaurant at 10 pm feeling hungry. I was so hungry that I had to stop by at another place to get some food. I have tried other Michelin star tasting menus and I felt stuffed after those. The vegetarian meal was as expensive as the regular menu, so walking out hungry at 10 pm is really bizarre. And if it was literally just supposed to be tasting menu, then it should not be at dinner time. Diners should never have to leave hungry past dinner time after paying a good chunk of money and gratuity. Food looked pretty. My vegetarian meal plate and my partner's meat platter looked identical, I'll give that to them. But they forgot, looks are useless if people are still hungry. Ambiance 5/5 - nice and cozy. While pretty, the caviar amuse was one note with bland accompaniments. Most protein courses: kinmedai, lobster, and duck were overcooked for my personal preferences. Subpar bread accompanied three of the courses, either underbaked (lemon epi) or dry + hard (duck bao). Not having a sweet tooth, IMHO, two chocolate desserts was a bit much. Texturally, the chocolate mousse was better of the two as the mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwich was rock hard. Pet peeve: to introduce a course as "crispy..." only to pour jus on top of the crispy skin rendering it soggy. This happened with the kinmedai and duck courses. Lastly, two sets of mignardises were just thrown in a bag together. None of them wrapped or placed in a box to take home. S E R V I C E Staff is kind and well-intentioned. They did their best but were green, lacking finesse and attention to detail. For example, water glass sat empty several times in 80+ degree weather (as various staff walked by), had to ask for second round of drinks, trying to take plates away with unfinished food, placing fresh utensils on top of crumbs, etc. Another table was brought a stool for their purse. Glad I finally tried Chez TJ. The scallop, bonito, wagyu and sticky toffee dishes were my favorites. I think with the caviar, truffle, and wagyu dishes (no supplements), Chez TJ was a better bang for buck than Plumed Horse, which I tried several months back. But Plumed Horse's service and setting felt more like a fine dining experience, and there were more surprises by way of creativity at Plumed Horse. I think if I had to recommend one South Bay Michelin restaurant of the two, it'd be Plumed Horse. For service - I liked the host, who doubled as bartender, I think, for a short menu of craft cocktails. The drinks were classic - not a lot of "mixology" here - he made subtle, notable changes via the liquor used, which made each drink more smooth without changing abv. We chatted with him a bit about it, chill guy, passionate about his craft. The staff service was okay, less polished than I usually experience for Michelin. For the vibe, the place looked super casual. It was a Victorian house, sure, but in the way that a ton of houses are Victorian in San Francisco - very commonplace. Partly because they don't play up the Victorian details with the decor. Prime example - One odd design choice was this giant RGB backlit glass with a picture of a peacock. It was like something you'd see at a dim sum place. Kind of gaudy. It was out of place here but honestly funny and charming in a way. On to food - there were so many dishes: N25 Caviar Buckwheat Crepe, Salsify - idk about this one. This tasted more like a cold, soggy thick soba noodle than a crepe. Love caviar so I feel like I could've just had this as a caviar bump. Longer Table Farm Savoy Cabbage - tbh this is on our menu and I either forgot to take a photo or I have no idea what food fell under this description. Oops. Green Garlic Cornet, Hiramasa, Fermented Daikon - so good. Really surprising - just looked like a tiny decorative garnish but packed a punch with flavor. Full Belly Farm Potato Veloute - pretty good, not sure the narrow glass was my favorite vessel for it. No complaints, I like veloute and could've eaten a bowl of it. Silver Sky Ranch Egg, Perigord Truffle - they described this as "scrambled egg" to us but it was more like...watery, whipped, uncooked scramble egg - right before you cook it. I love eggs and truffle, so I still mopped this up, but I didn't love the texture or combination of the two. The bread going with it also overpowered the truffle more than I'd like... just personal preference. Hokkaido Scallop, Longer Table Farm Honeynut Squash, Pomegranate - scallop was perfectly cooked, I liked the combo of squash and pomegranate. I think the proportion of pomegranate could have been dialed down a smidge. Easy fix though, I just left more of it on my plate. Bonito, Black Trumpet Mushroom, Front Porch Farm Brassicas - bonito is not my favorite fish but this dish was so good. That sauce is life. Mulled Cider Sorbet - I just had a couple bites of this. Not into those kind of fall spices, especially for palate cleanser sorbet. To each their own, only I didn't finish mine so could just be me. Broken Arrow Ranch Quail, Toscano Farm Beets, Smoked Crema - I liked the kick of heat here, I feel like you don't get much of that in fine dining for French food. It tasted like an elevated spicy chicken wing. Not my favorite dish but it was interesting. Masami Ranch Wagyu, Longer Table Farm Puntarelle, Sunchoke Poppy Sunflower Seed - favorite dish. The sauce was on point. Meat was perfectly cooked. The crispy sunchokes and sunchoke puree were amazing. One of the best dishes of the night. Pain Levain, Naval Orange Ricotta - love a good bread and butter but did not love this bread and it was paired with ricotta, came off really sweet. I took a couple of bites. Blood Orange Semifreddo, Earl Grey, Pink Peppercorn - pretty good but this dessert made me think of the strawberry shortcake at plumed horse and I liked the latter way better. I didn't eat much of this. I prefer ice cream or gelato over semifreddo and thought this dessert was too sweet. Pear Miso Sticky Toffee Pudding, Brillat Savarin - love toffee pudding! Pleasant surprise. Petit fours Pecan Praline - way too sweet for me. I liked the texture though. Cherry Hibiscus Pâte de Fruit - this tastes the same to me every fine dining restaurant I go to. Went on a date here last month and it was quite the experience. It's inside a fixed up old Victorian home in Mountain View. They have a small employee only parking lot so you'll have to park at the parking lot across the street or street parking. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking. I ended up being 10 minutes late. It's a 7 course meal that takes 2-3 hours with a few different time slots to choose from. We chose the 6pm time and we didn't finish until 9:30 ish so expect to be there awhile. It's 7 courses but during some of them you'll get 2-3 different tastings so in total it's about 15 tastings. Our favorite was hands down the potato ice cream. They also have alcoholic and nonalcoholic drink options. I got a mocktail and it was refreshing. Service was very good. I had my purse hanging on my chair and they insisted on bring a little chair for my purse lol. They explain each dish to you and make sure there's not a single crumb left on the table between courses. Also they don't rush in between courses. This was my first time going to a fancy restaurant like this and it was only because my date suggested it. I didn't see the bill but I'm sure it was $$$. I think it's something worth experiencing at least once in your life. It's a good reason to dress up. We joked about how we'd probably need to stop at In N Out or something afterwards but surprisingly we were both full by the end of the whole experience. The dinner that I had must've been an aberration because if they were all like this, they wouldn't keep their Michelin status. I had high expectations for dinner here, but 30 minute gaps between some courses in the set menu became unbearable. The experience wasn't worth a 3.5 hour dinner. I thought it was just me, but when I've discussed with coworkers, some have had similar experiences. It's nice to have a restaurant of the status so close by and I wish I could feel excited about going there more but it just takes one bad experience to ruin that idea. read more

4 stars for a solid Mountain View restaurant. I was visiting my sister in Mountain View and we decided to grab a reservation at Chez TJ to celebrate my birthday. Located on Villa Street near downtown Mountain View, we arrived at the venue to find a spot that almost struck me as being Southern proper in style (which appeals to me as somebody who has lived in the South for long periods of time). The host sat us at our table close to the small bar and the waitress came over to present options (e.g., which prix fixe options for food and wine). My sister is a vegetarian and my brother-in-law is a vegan, so the restaurant took extra care to make sure they received appropriate and tasty options. We started out with a couple fun appetizers, including a caviar dish, a fun scallop dish, and a really tasty truffle dish. After receiving a pallet cleanser, we moved on to several mains, which included lobster and wagyu, and some really great bread. The wagyu was fine, but the lobster was probably my favorite dish of the night. We then ended with a really solid semifreddo and a little dessert tray. I will say that our one complaint was that the food collectively wasn't very filling (we went to go grab some extra food from a nearby bar afterwards), but that is often par for the course at French prix fixe spots. Overall, Chez TJ provided us with a solid Michelin restaurant experience. While nothing blew me away enough to give 5 stars, I would be happy to check this spot out again next time I'm looking for an upscale Mountain View dinner. read more

Came her for my birthday last night. The food was shockingly mediocre for the price point (as many other reviewers have mentioned), and the desert was actually kind of laughable. For my bday, my mom had asked if she can bring a cake but the staff assured her they would have something nice -- what they brought out tasted like a stale small frozen desert from trader joes, not even with a candle on it. The server was rude, too. He got really upset that I asked to switch out my wine and then made multiple passive aggressive comments about it throughout the night including when we were walking out. Oh gosh this was a fun experience. Really enjoyed it and their new chef, Stan, and there was a bit of room for improvement, judging it at the highest standard. This is a delayed review -- we were there in January on Stan's very first night of service, which was also a unique adventure for all. He came out to the table and greeted us, and he was just the nicest. Enjoyed geeking out about food with him and excited to see where he takes things. I've shared the menus, so I'll just touch on the highlights of the meal. The game bird entree portion was amazing and paired so well with the wine. The paso vino cheese was incredible. East component was really unique and interesting. There was one wine that tasted so heavily of magnolia, I felt like I was back in my hometown in the South. The desserts were so off the wall, too. Risks about, and it pays off. A very fun experience. There was an uni component that also was just expertly paired with the wine. As for improvement, their somm seemed a little... off that night, maybe? Maybe nervous? Not sure. His pairings were stellar, but something in his service there was a little lacking. Again, judging this place to the highest degree. Excited to hear that they'll be experimenting with other price points. Firstly we got seated in a not super comfortable corner, back facing a through a door , the constant breeze/ wind through it made dressed up us super cold. Secondly, when the first appetizer arrived , we were waiting for the utensils to start. And no one mentioned anything or get us hand towel to be ready for it. The first dish experience already set the tone negatively. ... Overall, the total cost for two of us is about $680, we didn't add any add ons what they spent too much time in trying to sell those to us. Food was good but not at the level of $340 each kind of satisfaction. A place for special occasion but not high expectations. It was actually a nice experience with the spring special menu. Tastes are balanced, not too salty sauce or too sweet for desserts. Especially love the starting bites, flavorful bonito dish, plate cleanser sorbet, wagyu (sauce is terrific) and the two dessert dishes (beautiful Sakura mousse and tasty coconut Paris Brest). 7-course portion is big for me. A little cute house in downtown Mountain View. Looks very cozy from outside. This is my second time going there. This time we had Stan the new chef who started in January this year. Chef is very stiff and no personality towards customers, he showed up at our table for the first course (out of 6) and said something about the dish in a monotone voice, or maybe he was tired at 6:30pm? Who knows? Staffs are everywhere, friendly, typical of high end restaurant, attentive, and explained everything. I took my team here for a year-end dinner. The service was great, the atmosphere lovely, the food mediocre. At the end of the meal, someone in the group asked what everyone's favorite dish was. It was very quiet, and then someone finally said, "Maybe the panna cotta?" which was rather telling. Also, while they can accommodate vegetarians, the offerings are rather uninspired. The service was excellent, as was to be expected from a Michelin starred restaurant. As for the food, it was excellent. While I have eaten at several Michelin restaurants, I would say that many of them become forgettable, and all the courses across the various restaurants become a blur. Not here. Each course was excellent, and complimented the course before and after it. It was a very well designed, crafted, and executed tasting menu. This dining experience was also one of the coziest, and it was a really amazing vibe that evening considering how much time the restaurant gave us to enjoy the garden's atmosphere. Each dish was paced and delivered perfectly at the right time. The atmosphere was beyond fantastic. Service was impeccable as well. Onto the food. The first few bites were all packed with flavor. The tomatoes had a taste that I didn't know tomatoes could have and the ravioli dish definitely surprised me with how good it was. Wish I had like 10 more of these. Everything going forward was solid and the lobster and beef were cooked perfectly. Neither of the sauces overpowered the protein but still added more flavors to the mix. The salad on the plate with a lot of open space was eh, but at this point it was nice to get some acidic greens after savory bites. It balanced out well. The highlight of my meal though was the dessert. Every dessert tasted great, but the jelly dish really stood out to me. It's combination of texture and flavor was something that made me feel better when the paycheck arrived. My dining experience at Chez TJ was nothing short of amazing. Had a lovely birthday dinner for my dear friend here. As expected at a Michelin restaurant, the service was excellent and the food tasty. When dining here your only option is the chef tasting menu localized based on what is in season- we were here on a winter's evening. Since we were celebrating, they provided us with an extra dessert and the red carpet treatment. The main course venison was the star of the show and we upgraded to truffle risotto which was divine. Another favorite dish was the rabbit. The desserts were also exceptional. Didn't quite get to 5 stars as the service was at times slower than it needed to be, and not all the courses blew us away but we had an amazing experience here and would highly recommend for a special occasion if you have the means. read more

What an amazing experience! The service, the food, the wine. Chez TJ provides a delicious tasting menu that is not announced prior to arrival. I love a great foodie adventure where the chefs can be creative and serve plates that I haven't found anywhere else. The combinations of flavors and textures were unexpected and quite enjoyable. The dishes were paired expertly with wines that complimented the flavors. During this culinary adventure, the server and sommelier explained each item presented and provided additional details when my curiosity was piqued. We had a memorable experience at Chez TJ for an anniversary. Would highly recommend for special occasions. Their pre fixe menu is comparable to pricing at other Michelin restaurants but still not for the faint of heart. But we think it was worth it for the quality, service, and overall experience. The food service and pacing was excellent. We did not leave hungry, and the menu had a few fun surprises. We ordered additional truffles with the agnolotti and wagyu for the main entree - this wagyu was worth every penny. Gustavo was an incredible server - warm, informative, and very helpful. Overall, the service is wonderful. Asking to use the restroom can get a bit awkward - there's only one and it's discouraged to wait in the small hallway - but the staff was helpful and quick to facilitate our bathroom trips (as crazy as that sounds). The ambience is nice but potentially a bit quiet. We felt the need to talk quietly as the ambient French music and ongoing conversation among tables was hushed. The dress code is "formal, elegant," and jackets are "not required but appropriate," so we dressed up (think wedding guest). Definitely make your reservation a few weeks in advance if you want a res time before 8 pm. Our res started at 8 and we left around midnight. Overall, an unforgettable night. read more

Had a birthday dinner at Chez TJ last night and it was a very enjoyable experience. We did the 4 course meal and it was excellent. It started with an amuse bouche of a small zucchini fritter with parmesan aioli and a striped coon shrimp tartlet along with a bit of melon with panna cotta and caviar with bits of chanterelle mushroom. Following that they served a light and thinly sliced nectarine salad with burgundy black truffle. Next course was a nice piece of fish called Medai, similar to butterfish with peppers and watermelon relish. The main course was a 4 oz piece of Wagyu beef cooked to a beautiful rare to medium rare with baby eggplant and peppers with a black garlic sauce. Palette cleanser was a cooling mint mojito sorbet, followed by dessert of honey mousse gateau and candied fig inside a parmesan crisp roll along with fig whip ganache. Service was excellent, attentive but not rushed. Highly recommend if you enjoy excellent and inventive dishes with interesting and complex flavors. Expensive but worth the journey. read more
