I've always heard of Gochi, but surprisingly have never been! So was super excited to try! Amaebi carpaccio: Mmmmmmm ok I liked the idea of it, but turns out the plum vinaigrette reminded me of a holiday scented candle and I didn't love it.... Shrimp was fresh and non fishy tho. Kanpachi carpaccio: Really yummy sauce and good fish - just wish it was a little colder instead of room temp (but i think it was that temp bc it was lightly seared) Asari sakamushi: Clams were great and the sake broth was so clear and light and lovely Kisu Tempura: Wow ok so we really like kisu tempura at Sam's in San Mateo and don't see it v often so decided to get! Overall 4.5/5 Gochi creates fusion dishes in a clever manner that just works and respects the traditional dishes which they come from. Unagi meshi - crispy and yummy. This is very different from the cantonese clay pot rice which I am used to, but I was pleasantly surprised. The rice is just as umami and crispy, and the dish itself is sweet and savory and quite good. The addition of dashi broth and wasabi is a must here; it pairs so well with the flavors of the eel and rice. Chashu miso pizza - the "pizza dough" is a light and crisp pastry resembling tempura batter. On top of the light batter is lots of cheese, mushrooms, pork, and miso sauce. The miso flavor here is incredibly mild, while the cheese and mushroom are the heaviest flavors in my opinion. I'm quite impressed with this pizza especially when it comes to the dough/crust. I would recommend trying this out. For a weekend meal, I highly recommend booking a reservation. Tables fill up quick and from your time of reservation, you get 90 minutes to order, eat, and leave. I came here with my brother and we ordered a variety of different items ranging from pizza to clay pot rice, to carpaccio. The things we ordered included: Yuzu ceviche- This was delicious. The house made chips resembled ruffles and the ceviche was actually very refreshing. I couldn't stop taking bites out of it. Hints of citrus plus tomato, cucumbers, this was the perfect appetizer for clearing the palate before a meal. Ankimo - Monkfish liver, this dish was decent. Came here with three friends and we ordered a bunch of things to share, which is honestly the best way to try this place because their menu is HUGE. The okonomiyaki pizza was a bit disappointing -- the cabbage tasted quite bitter and all four of us noticed it right away. But I do want to mention that the service was really kind. Came in a few years ago and decided to come back again this past Friday evening to see what it's like now. It was pretty packed even at 8 pm but we were seated fairly quickly. Our server was friendly and I was bummed that they don't offer tea. But all good. There were two separate menus offering similar items but different, so that was a little confusing. They seemed to be known for the clay pot rice and most tables had ordered at least one. So we decided to get a small dry pork curry to try. It came out sizzling hot and they helped us mix the rice. The small sizes were around $28 / $30+ and we thought that was really expensive for what it was. We also ordered their tempura udon (which was meh) and their yellowtail sashimi (pretty good). Made a reservation for group of three on Saturday. I had a great experience in different location of Gochi so I had to take my friend who just moved to Northern California. It looks like they were busy, but service was great. Most of us got there on time and one person was still on the way. They were graciously able to have a sit right away without waiting my friend. I would definitely consider the bad reviews for this place - the food is bland just as the other reviews mention. The price for bland food is also absurd. The service was awful, we came for a birthday and I mentioned this to our "server" on the side at the start and he never checked in on us once the entire meal. We were given the check by the hostess who checked on us nearly an hour after we arrived. We went to the Cupertino location which is why we were so surprised by the complete 180 in flavor and poor service. We found Gochi nearby after deciding to forfeit our place in Kunjip Tofu's 1.5 hour waitlist, but we're very happy we came here instead: Gochi is an example of Asian fusion done right. The menu is thoughtful and well-curated, and all the flavors work well together. Gochi Mountain View like it's counterpart location is unassuming and tucked away in a strip mall. It has enough parking, but can be difficult to locate due to it's dim signage at night. Love tapas and was happy to celebrate a birthday here with a large party. Tako Salad - mixed greens with chopped octopus and an ume vinaigrette. A regular size is a good sharing size and enjoyed the balance of the dressing, the ume flavor wasn't too strong. Sashimi Moriawase - assorted sashimi of octopus, salmon, red snapper, yellow tail, amberjack and mackerel. Enjoyed the offering and was given 3 slices of each. The only con was that my mackerel pieces had bones, 2/3 had bones that I had to pick out carefully which wasn't very pleasant as they were small and thin. Out of all the fish the salmon, yellowtail and amberjack were best. Kamo Yuzu - duck breast smothered in a fresh salsa, I did not have this, but typically would prefer sauces on the side anyways. Ika Maru Yaki - perfected grilled squid, with a great smokey flavor, served with mayo and lemon Gyutan Shioyaki - grilled beef tongue, super tender and perfectly cooked, these went fast! we ordered another Sirloin Steak - steak sauteed in soy garlic brandy and topped with scallions and garlic chips. did not have this, but the table ordered two! Buta Meshi - pork belly clay pot, we had the staff mix the dish for us and the crispy rice from the bottom of the pot was so delicious! a filling and satisfying dish! big pieces of pork belly throughout. We didn't finish the dinner with dessert and had brought our own cake. However, I think there is a charge if you want to cut the cake and need plates/utensils. We sang happy birthday, for the novelty and photos but were too full for the cake. The staff asked us multiple times if we were cutting our cake there and we declined twice. For two we got: - Agedashi tofu: delicious appetizer to start the meal, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - Okonomiyaki pizza: the texture and flavors of this was so perfect, such a unique dish - Unagi meshi: I love both crispy rice and unagi and this did not disappoint- recommend getting the dashi broth along with this to accompany the dish - Beef tongue: a bit chewy (which is to be expected with beef tongue), but very flavorful and juicy. I do wish the portion was a bit larger given the price though - Hojicha creme brulee: this was a seasonal menu item, surprisingly not too sweet! Wow. They are severely understaffed here and this really downgraded our first time experience here. Our group was 5 adults and 1 toddler. My 3 other friends arrived early on a Saturday around noon and they were promptly seated but unfortunately, it took them 30 minutes until someone stopped by to take their orders. When I arrived, everyone was a little disappointed to the lack of attention. There was only one server for the entire restaurant at this time. Luckily the food didn't take as long to come out after I joined them. We ordered the Mentaiko pizza, shishito peppers, uni hotate meshi and Unagi Meshi. We all thoroughly enjoyed the Mentaiko pizza and the shishito peppers. They were very flavorful and well balanced. Unfortunately, both the unagi and Uni hotate meshis were both underseasoned. We eventually used the salt from our shishito peppers dish to try to season up both dishes and it was improved afterwards. What didn't improve was the lack of service, we tried to wave down the server a few times when all our water cups were empty but it took awhile. Food (4/5) Food was delicious! I would have liked a little more seasoning for my claypot rice however. It was a nice, comforting hearty meal. I've been here before and enjoyed the hamachi carpaccio too :) Price (4/5) On the pricier side. My gindara meshi/black cod small claypot rice was $37, my friend's tori soboro meshi/braised ground chicken small claypot rice was $26, and my other friend's tempura udon was $16 (this was the most fairly priced). Keep in mind that the dashi soup is an additional $2.5. We also ordered curry korokke ($10.5), which my friends enjoyed. Wait Time (4/5) Made a reservation several days in advance via Yelp for our party of three which was easy. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. We were told on arrival that our reservation was limited to 1.5hrs. One of my friends did have to wait a while for her udon while my and my other friend's meals were already arrived, so that was odd (I assume udon is usually quicker, but she did order the tempura udon?). Ambiance (5/5) Cozy interior, about 10+ tables for parties of 2-4, and three larger tables for parties of 4+ with tatami seating. It was pretty warm inside. Service (4/5) Everyone was pleasant and nice but it did take us a while to flag someone down when we were trying to ask about my friend's late dish. It also did take a while for us to get the check. No other concerns. Parking/Access (5/5) Located in a strip mall, there's plenty of parking available with no time limits. Most of the other businesses are closed for dinner time at least (the pool shop, key shop, FedEx). Probably wouldn't come back again since this was my second visit and there are other more affordable restaurants in the area with more exciting choices in my opinion. A unique, higher end spot for Japanese fusion dishes, especially the clay pot rice. We made a reservation on Yelp for 5:30pm on a Sunday right when they opened. The restaurant is in a plaza so parking is easy. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. The Japanese decor is nice. There is a mixture of regular tables and tatami tables (the Japanese style tables where you have to take off your shoes and climb down in to sit down). We had the Takowasa (raw octopus), Agedashi Tofu, Kani Tama, and the Uni Hotate Clay Pot Rice. The food came out fast. All the raw seafood was fresh. The tofu was nicely fried and delicate. The Kani Tama was super savory in the gravy sauce and actually had a good amount of crab. Get the dashi stock on the side for your clay pot! We could have drank bucketfuls of the dashi soup by itself. But it was so good paired with the crispy pieces of rice in the claypot. The dishes are smaller and pricier as it is more high end, but you're getting fresh seafood and everything was delicately flavored. Would be a cute special date spot! read more

Really tasty Japanese food - we will be back! Top dishes for us were the carpaccio, unagi meshi (small was plenty and allowed us to try more dishes), veggie tempura, and daikon salad. I liked the renkon hasamige and am happy we tried it, but probably wouldn't get it again unless I were craving lotus root. The hiyashi tomatoes were good but pretty much just sliced tomatoes. The uni on a fried rice ball can be skipped. The lychee soy milk sorbet was really strong in lychee flavor - refreshing but not as balanced as the rest of the food.
