I have always loved this place for breakfast. Been coming here since I was a kid after early Saturday morning hockey games. Great food, quick service, good prices. After today, I may never go back. To begin with, we had to ask for coffee twice. That should have been our first sign that they were understaffed. At a breakfast place like Chez Vachon, the coffee should be on automatic. Then, it took 50 minutes to get our food. You read that right - *50 minutes*. The waitress avoided eye contact with us the entire time. At one point - about 30 minutes after the order was taken - the waitress promised us the next order from the kitchen was ours. It wasn't. When my wife reminded her we had 2 small kids who were about to melt down, she acted surprised. For a restaurant that has been consistently good for many, many years, today was a huge disappointment. The food was delicious and the service was great. This was my first time here and the poutine was highly recommended so we ordered the large appetizer and we loved it. I then ordered the biscuits and gravy with eggs and it was also delicious. My cousins ordered eggs, pancakes and a sandwich all of which were freshly made and of high quality. We were thoroughly impressed with the attentive and friendly staff. I visit Manchester several times a year and I'll make it my business to come back here. This place is where you go if you wand French Canadian cooking, without any of the flavor or soul of real Canadian cooking. Maybe I'm just jaded because my marme cooks some of the best Canadian food you will ever have. They have a small lot behind the resto, or street parking. There will probably be a line so be patient if you are craving a bit of cretons or gorton (what they call it). While sitting down I felt like I was in Montreal, listening to all kinds of people speaking french and english. The menu though is where its @. They have lots of poutine and while I didn't try it this time, I did drink their gravy which was delicious. Fried pickles...yum! Maple cream crepe - amazing! Loaded home fries - YES PLEASE! Smoked meat omelet - Ok!! Potato Pancakes - Can I have more than just three?! Hash - more please! You get the idea....Around us I heard people ordering the traditional pork pie and the salmon pie. Both sounded delightful. I can't wait to come back, I feel like I need another crepe a l'erable. This is the perfect little French Canadian diner. Completely charming, with a versatile and very affordable menu. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the crepes, especially with their maple cream sauce (but be sure to request it on the side, so you can add the perfect portion yourself). They also have incredible poutine! Service has been exceptional each time I visit, and there's always an interesting mix of guests. I was in Burlington Vermont when a poutine craving hit. You'd think I could find some decent poutine less than an hour from the Canadian border. Nope. Folks in Burlington didn't even know what I was talking about. Yelping didn't help much either. The closest poutine was supposed to be in E.B.F, Northeast Kingdom. Only after I came home to Manchester and stopped by Chez Vachon for lunch was I able to satisfy my craving for brown gravy, meat, fries and curd cheese - all piled on one plate. I also had a craving for fried chicken. Chez Vachon satisfied that too with their broasted chicken. Although the waitress warned me it would take 20 minutes, I think it came out faster than that. Maybe because it was 1:30 p.m. and they close every day at 2:00. Chez Vachon is my favorite restaurant in Manch for home style French (Canadian) comfort food like poutine, salmon pie and tortiere. Most of the food on the menu is standard diner fare at reasonable prices, but the star for me is the poutine. They offer it a few different ways: regular (fries, curds, chicken gravy), with veggies, and with various meats including hamburger, Italian sausage, and kielbasa. I tried it with veggies and was very happy with it. The curds didn't quite make that trademark speak, but tasted pretty fresh anyway. The fries also stood up to the gravy well and did not turn into a mushy mess. I got the regular size and would only recommend the large if you were planning to share! I travel 90 miles round trip on the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year Holidays just to purchase the Toutierre (french meat pies) that Chez Vachon has. They are as good if not better than any homemade meat pies found anywhere! When I use to live in the Allenstown area which is just outside of Manchester I use to frequent that Restaurant often. All there is to say is, if you love great Canadian home cooking and at more than reasonable prices you need to go to Chez Vachon. read more

I always enjoy stopping by Chez Vachon and I always get the chicken tenders. Yum! The atmosphere is cozy but very crowded. It's a popular place so there's usually a little bit of a wait, but nothing crazy. Chez is no exception to this feeling of home cooked, diner food. Stopped in here while passing through Manchester, NH after a wonderful weekend at the Ice Castle in Lincoln, NH. Since we were so far north from where we live in Providence, my first thought was Poutine, us seeing a lot of Canadian flags in upstate NH. This place does not disappoint. A nice large plate to easily be shared by too with Hand Cut Fries, Thick Beef Gravy, Cheese, Mushrooms and Bacon. It was finger licking good. Only thing we were not a fan of here was the very slow service, 15 mins to get water is a bit much, but it's a diner, so my expectations of service were not super high, so really, not a deal breaker. One of my earliest memories of this place, other than biking by it benignly on neighborhood adventures, was of President William Jefferson Clinton aka Bill, who came here to pay a visit as President in the early 90's. A couple of us had a breakfast cocktail with OJ, cranberry and vodka. It was really good and pretty strong, which I appreciate. I had the farmers skillet for breakfast. Poutine? Yes, please. After eating here, I realized it was a bad idea to have potatoes in my breakfast and then continue with the starch overload with poutine. I immediately fell asleep when I got home. I was lucky I did not fall asleep at the wheel... Whew. There seems to always be a line here, but it moves relatively fast, at least when I went. What more could you ask for?We've been going to Chez Vachon repeatedly for nearly a year now and we've never left disappointed. We usually start with an entree order of poutine with deep fried bacon. Oh yes, deep fried! The bacon is crispy and not fatty. The fries are sometimes a little soft, sometimes crunchier but always delicious with the gravy and cheese curds. Most of the time my husband and I have breakfast. I find that a simple two-egg breakfast plate does the trick. I often get their sour dough toast griddled and it's the perfect bed for my soft-poached eggs. My husband really likes their sausage gravy over eggs and a biscuit. In fact, all of their gravies are very flavorful with lots of depth, and they are different. It's not the same brown gravy served over and over again on everything. One of the best ways (IMO) to eat home fries is with grilled onions and cheese sauce. Trust me! It's deadly good. And if you're in the mood for a sweet treat, try the donut muffin warmed up either on the griddle or toasted. And the crepe with maple cream is amazing! read more

Cute little french inspired foodie place in Manchester! Friends and I stopped by for some breakfast. Atmosphere is definitely diner-like, with a bulletin board of several politician names and faces posted on the walls of their diner hehe. The portions are pretty huge (the waffles will consume your face!. Had a try of the blueberry chocolate crepe - a huge sweet yum yum. They have french toast toppings GALORE -- cherry jubilee is just YES! Haven't tried the poutine yet, but I'm sure by all the reviews and rewards they have posted all around their restaurant it must be amazing!! The staff were really nice, but can get crowded. Well we understood it was a Sunday at noon so breakfast places are typically always busy at that time but we got sat in less than 10 minutes. Unfortunately that wasn't a good sign. Coffee was like water and wasn't hot. When we got a second cup, it was the same. We waited almost an hour for our food for it to come out cold and to find a hair cooked into our pancake. I went here for lunch today and got all of the treats that I have not had in years . I am French Canadian and for me poutine is one of my favorite foods and although I can make them myself I went and tried this one. I am sure a few of you are asking how can you mess up a poutine? Sure you can by using the wrong gravy, fries and the cheese you cannot replace it it has to be the curds which I am happy Hannaford's sells :) It was awesome. The pistachio cake here is absolutely delicious! My dad LOVES anything pistachio so I wanted to pick one up for him, and it did not disappoint. The rest of my family loved it as well. It was moist and had just enough pistachio flavor. The frosting also had little bits of pistachio in it which was nice. I've never tried anything else here but I had seen the pistachio cake on Phantom Gourmet. Highly recommend! My only reasoning for 4 stars as opposed to 5 is due to the fact that the staff I corresponded with over the phone were not friendly at all, to the point of verging on rude. When I first called to place the order, the woman I spoke with sounded extremely confused that I wanted to order a cake. "You want to order an entire pistachio cake...?" On their website they have advertised that they have a bakery and sell whole cakes with their pricing, so I wasn't sure why she had that reaction. When I was giving her my information, I don't know if she wasn't understanding me but I had to give her my phone number a couple of times in a row, and during the conversation she interrupted me to say exasperatedly "you're calling from a cell phone, aren't you?" After I hung up the phone I just felt very silly and like I had done something wrong. I was a little uneasy about whether or not the cake would actually be there when I picked it up, so I called the morning prior to confirm. I'm not sure if it was the same woman or a different one but she had the same attitude as the first, and interrupted me when I said I was calling to confirm an order with "yeah it'll be fine," and rushed me off the phone. Didn't ask me for my name or anything so that I could confirm my order. I felt foolish and like I was bothering them both times I called when I was just trying to spend money at their establishment.
