I pulled up here by accident, fully intending to go to another bowl place, the name and Korean bbq tex mex got me curious enough to abandon my plans. I am glad i did. This is a casual, fast dining, chipotle style korean food bowl or burrito-like (called ssam) place. Not much service to talk about here other than polite staff. Order, pay and eat. It's more Korean flavors than any mex imo but they did have a mean looking queso you can dump on your meal. I got spicy chicken bowl with noodles and a bunch of stuff. It was yummy! I was greeted warmly as soon as I walked in, which always sets the tone. I ordered a bowl with soy glazed chicken and all the veggies, and it was fresh and delicious. We came here for a quick bite to eat and ordered two bibimbap bowls - one with crispy chicken and one with beef. They topped with a fresh fried eggs and that was nice. It was nice that they let me get the bibimbap but with chicken; so they are flexible. The area where they make your food is sort of like a Chipotle where they have the toppings and add them to your taste. The kimchi was good but the other veggies could be a hit or miss. The crispy chicken in my bowl was pretty good and crispy. However the beef was hard and was not as good according to my partner. The former food truck business from 6th street in Austin has come to San Marcos with their Korean- Mexican fusion dishes. I'm guessing this restaurant is appealing to the surrounding college students for its quick service and light meals. You can build your own bowl, or choose from an already put together meal. We built our own, however had a hard time choosing a protein we wanted or liked. We sampled the K-pop chicken, Spicy Chicken and Korean BBQ steak. Both chicken samples lacked any real flavor which was disappointing at best. They were out of a few other proteins including the carnitas and soy glaze chicken, so we went with the bbq steak. It was ok, but not much different than you can find at subway. We did add the 1/2 pound of Korean wings, but my journey to find authentic tasting chicken like we experienced in Seoul Korea continues. It was however, the best part of the experience for me. You order and walk down the line to add protein and veggies and then pay at the end. For a brick and mortar store, it was clean and modern enough to enjoy sitting inside and eating. All in all, it's OK, if you are in a rush, want a reasonable price meal to tie you over to the next one but don't expect too much. read more

Can you guys do something about your rice? This location is my closest location so I visit pretty frequently and more times than not the jasmine rice is far too soft and mushy. One time it was pure mush. Like you're adding far too much water when it's being made. I love Chi Lantro. I recommend it to my friends. It's my go to when I want to eat and I order in a lot. A great spot to build your own or pick as is korean fusion bowl or burrito. I was fairly surprised they went away from korean Mexican tacos that was a must have for their food trucks, but Texas has way too many taco restaurants anyway. I got the chilantro bibimbap, keeping it as it is on the menu with everything on it. Great option, if you want to try an original korean style bowl with bulgogi and lots of veggies. Oh! Don't forget the fried egg to mash into the bowl. Not only that, don't forget to spoil yourself with some semi healthy, loaded kimchi fries. This is definitely a must have! There's ample parking as it is in a shopping complex with lots of other businesses. They build your bowl as you're in line kind of like chipotle. To be honest, it is not worth the hype. I was excited about a new Asian spot opening in San Marcos, but it was more fusion than anything. The flavors are for the white palate. I got the Spicy Pork and the Japchae which already did not taste authentic at all. Paired with the sides they have, it tasted disappointingly American. The flavors were mediocre and everything felt pretty oily. I was confused by the cuisine Chi' Lantro was trying to be. Overall, I would not come here again. The food is so flavorful. Every bite is fresh and delicious. If I lived near here I'd visit at least once a week. The fried chicken had a wonderful sauce yet was still crispy. They're little wings so they sell them by the pound. The fries were dressed well and the bulgogi was so tender. They don't just throw the food together. The first time I had Chi'Lantro I was at a work event and they had their food truck there. It was love at first bites I have been obsessed ever since. I've been going to the San Marcos location for a while and the service is always top tier. The restaurant is very clean and basic. It is usually pretty quiet. One important thing to know is the store is cashless. I usually order through the app and I love their rewards program and birthday rewards so signing up for their rewards is a must. The food is a little pricy for fast food but it is really good. My favorite drink is the Basil Peach lemonade. I like to switch up the meals. I love the Kimchi fries, the fried wings and sometimes I will do a build your own bowl. Give them a try you won't be disappointed. read more

Looking for some Korean Fried Chicken brought us to Chi Lantro. Nice and clean, brightly lit place. Menu displayed up high above the order counter. Decided to try the kimchi fries, Korean fried chicken wings, Korean style esquites (Mexican street corn), and b'bibap bowl. The b'bibap bowl was the best of the three, fresh and appetizing, but honestly, we've had better. The esquites were tasty, served with tortilla chips, but cold, which is how we assumed they are normally served, but we think it would have been better warm. The kimchi fries were our least fav. Fries were lukewarm and the flavor was spicy but nothing special. We love kimchi and buy it often as a condiment for lots of things at home, so we were not new to kimchi. The wings were the second best thing. They were good, but again, we've had better. Kimchi Box has amazing wings, our current bar. Service was pretty good, manager came to check on us, very nice. We didn't mention the lukewarm fries because we didn't really want a replacement. The drinks are unique here and appear to be included in food orders. The peach basil lemonade was pretty good.
