I had lunch here for the first time today, delicious food, attentive service, and welcoming environment. A mixture of seating options indoor/outdoor, tables and booths, they also have a small bar and what looked to be a nice cocktail list. I had the shrimp dumplings, the vegetable tempura and the spicy eggplant with shrimp and everything was delicious and I have plenty of food for a few more small meals, so I found it a good value when considering the ingredients and portions. "The most authentic northern Thai food in the D.C. area" is what a trusted friend who spent many years living in Southeast Asia said about Chiang Mai Thai Cookhouse. In the same breath, she also warned that service may be slow. However, that wasn't the case when I visit on a Sunday evening in July for dinner. Here's my experience. 1) Service: There's a small parking lot on the upper level of this strip mall in McLean. Walk down the stairs into one-room spacious Chiang Mai Thai Cookhouse. Once inside, I was greeted by a hostess and seated at a table for two. Throughout my one-hour stay, I was checked in upon. My water glass was kept full, and the check came to my table in a timely manner. 2) Food: Hungry, I ordered the papaya salad, tom ka soup, and the mango and sticky rice for dessert. I also ordered the Thai iced tea. Every dish was a little different from other Thai restaurants across the country. The papaya in the salad was thicker and not as soaked in the flavors. The soup had large, cooked onion pieces in it. The rice in the dessert was a slight green color. The Thai iced tea was more subtle. It was my first time trying this spot after their relocation. Their previous resturaunt was extremely small but it really shocked us with how amazing and authentic the food was. Their new location is decorated so beautifully, is much more spacious, and most importantly the quality of the food was not lost! The service was also fast despite all the tables being filled on a Monday at lunch! (Presidents' day) We ordered the chicken pad thai and the pu pad pong curry and both were extremely good, and the curry was packed with huge pieces of crab meat. Even though it was $35 it was welll worth the price!! They also have an extensive dessert and cocktail menu with very unique options. CALAMARI RINGS - 15 This was the perfect sharable between the three of us since we were able to enjoy at least 5-6 calamari rings per person. It was fried perfectly and went well with the Thai chili sauce (?). Without the sauce, it would have been a bit underwhelming though. PAD SEE EW (+SHRIMP) - 20 The pad see ew was very flavorful, each wide noodle was coated with a generous amount of sauce, which was mostly savory with a hint of sweetness. The portion of noodles wasn't too big, but it did come with half a plate of broccoli and julienne carrots. I would have preferred Chinese broccoli (gai lan), which is what is normally in the dish. JUMBO CRAB MEAT FRIED RICE - 25 The crab fried rice was pretty disappointing. The fried rice was bland and the crab meat was dry (maybe overcooked?) leaving each bite unsatisfactory. Ambiance 4.5/5 The atmosphere here was very nice. The low lighting made it feel very intimate. There's plenty of seating with an outdoor patio as well. There are booths and tables and the seats were very comfortable. They've got a bar area with a little stage for live music. I love the little trinkets that are on the shelves all over the restaurant that give it a unique vibe. Service 4/5 Our waitress was nice and friendly. I really liked the taste of the crispy noodles and the crunchy texture it added. The soup was creamy and delicious. The noodles were soft and chewy and absorbed the flavor of the soup. The chicken was tender although there wasn't much of it. The veggies tasted very fresh and were also crunchy. This was a little on the pricier side but was a decent portion size and pretty filling. Mango Sticky Rice ($9) 3.5/5 The mango sticky rice was soft, creamy, and slightly sweet. The mango was soft and warm, not very flavorful but tasted fresh. The rice was sticky, creamy, and chewy. The layout can be deceiving, but trust me, it's absolutely worth the trip. My celiac daughter not only was glad for things marked gluten free but for a waitress who got it and could direct her to items without chance of cross contamination. We ordered the Drunken Noodles and it was bold and aromatic, cooked with fresh basil, sesame oil, and rice wine, rich and fragrant without overpowering. Both portions were very generous leaving enough to pack up and bring half home. The entrees of the drunken noodles with beef and the shrimp pad thai were the same - tasty to enjoy at lunch with enough to bring home half. For dessert, since our favorite, mango with sticky rice was out of season (one more reason we are excited for winter to be over already) we had the crispy bananas with coconut ice cream. The bananas were indeed crispy and hot on the outside and warm and yummy on the inside. The ice cream came with chocolate sauce and whipped cream and though it was a little hard from the freezer, we couldn't wait for it to soften before it was all gone. The interior of the restaurant has some interesting collections which we would love to hear the stories behind. Someone had a wonderful childhood with cabbage patch dolls we suspect. The thick al dente noodles coated in brown sauce with a heap of fresh veggies (broccoli, corn, carrots, asparagus) and perfectly fried tofu was bursting with flavor. Pad Se Ew can be a miss and typically there's a missing favor with overcooked or oily noodles, frozen veggies, or brittle/overcooked tofu - but everything was on point here and tasted very fresh and not oily. The family-owned restaurant can be short staffed, it's worth the wait! Recommend extra time on weekends or ordering on a weekday (I only waited 15 min on Monday!) I was the first one here on a Tuesday at lunch time and ordered a shrimp Tom yum soup (medium) to go. I had been craving tom yum soup for a while. It's a $9 soup plus tax and you get a pint container for take out orders. No cutlery or napkins. When I got home, I opened it, excitedly and then realized that it was chicken. Not a single piece of shrimp in the entire order. I had also ordered it medium spicy (the two options offered to me) and the broth was not spicy at all.) Ordered with the host and the order was ready for takeout ahead of the time window they provided. Packaged well for to-go and still warm when we got home to Fairfax. The Pad See Ew was sauced well with plenty of tofu and broccoli. The pineapple fried rice was packed with a large variety of vegetables and tofu. The vegetables were al dente and not overcooked - which we loved!! The interior has a great energy and a cozy feel/atmosphere. We will definitely come back and sit down to eat soon. Before they moved to bigger space they were fun, authentic meals. A real cookhouse. So when they moved I was delighted - however you need consistency in food prep & there is no consistency at all. First visit at new place we had fast service and teeny tiny portions ( not like at previous location) we ended up ordering 2 more dntrees having already ordered 3 ( 4 persons but elderly mom barely eats), drinks also were late arriving warm & mid. Went again, portions better but over an hours wait - while the foods good this was to much to ask it to beat left annoyed & like we had wasted an entire evenkng. Went again tried again last week : instead of being hostage to erratic service my husband chose to take out from nearby Lebanese ( always a winner never disappoints) in same building - I predetermined here : peanut beef curry with mushrooms ( xtra) to go I ordered at 6.05 & was told ten mins. My husbands restaurant said 15 mins. His was ready, kids & dogs in car, kids had chosen chipotle - we waited for my meal/-- and waited. At 6.50 I cancelled the order ( which required me waiting for the manager) I was short refunded by $5 as they forgot the upgrades & I didn't have the time to care, they were stressed & busy but completely indifferent to how they ( who had said ten mins) affected our evening. Finally made it out to try Chiang Mai Thai Cookhouse! I placed my order over the phone and picked it up 15 minutes later. Upon arrival I noticed a sign instructing customers to wait outside for their order. I was helped a few minutes later and pickup was easy. There is another sign inside stating that it's a small family business - only two people are working. I would suggest allowing extra time for your order if you're attempting to pickup during peak hours. The most important thing to note is that the drunken noodles were excellent! The flavor was great, not too spicy, and the chicken was moist. I look forward to returning and trying more items! read more
