Extremely Disappointed. This was a hell-ish customer service experience. The restaurant only completed one of the two orders that were made. When we called the restaurant, the person speaking kept talking in circles and hung up on me. The last time I called, after asking multiple times to see whether or not the food would be delivered and getting hung up on again, the person finally answered no and to just call DoorDash. Parking is sometime challenging since there are many store beside this small restaurant, The wait could be a little long even when its not busy. It's sad how "Peruvian" chicken has been degraded around here. There used to be standards, flavor was paramount. These days its all a gimmick. The chicken itself didn't taste bad but it lacked true flavor. It was juicy, but that alone doesn't make a good Peruvian chicken. I looked this place up today right on Yelp. Good thing I did. We were only six minutes away from here upon completing one of our jobs and Will my assistant and I were terribly hungry. "Wherever shall we go?" We thought. I know, how about some rotisserie chicken! What a fantastic idea! We followed the trail and came upon this place. It seemed empty for this time of the day, except for two tables. We looked around. There were various stews in trays on the opposite side of the glass. Then we looked at the chicken menu. We could see all the tasty chicken roasting ever so gloriously in the metal fire cooker with the glass doors. A whole chicken! We decided. We got two sides, rice and beans. In addition we wanted fried plantains. The chicken was really superb and the beans and rice had just the perfect balance of flavor! The fried plantains were no less amazing. Music videos played in Spanish to set that Latin mood. It was kind of funny and entertaining. For $26 we got all that food and several drinks and for two big hungry hard-working men like us it was simply too much food, we had to take some in a to-go tray. I last had Chicken Rico more than 5 years ago. I was impressed with the quality of the food and overall in-store service experience. Unfortunately, that all changed with a recent order attempt via the app GrubHub. I placed an order and received a delivery estimate of 60-70 minutes. Approximately 50 minutes after my order, someone called and told me that the store was closed so I would not be receiving my order. I was disappointed, but figured maybe things happen. I immediately called GrubHub to confirm that they would either stop the charge or refund the cost of the food. The GH rep seemed shocked that my order had been cancelled because the store had not communicated to them that they were no longer open for the day. Nonetheless, they said they would ensure I received a refund. About ten minutes later, GH called back to say the restaurant claimed my food had already been made and the order was out for delivery. I was instructed to give them 10 minutes to deliver. I waited 30 minutes, then called GH back and told them I still didn't have my food. To add insult to injury, the restaurant had actually marked my order as fulfilled - meaning that I had received my food. Obviously, that was a lie. Finally, GrubHub initiated the refund on my behalf. I will not be giving Chicken Rico another try to get it right. They are, at best, unorganized or at worst, dishonest. I would hope this was an anomaly, but looking at other reviews, it appears that this experience happens frequently. I can't accept that kind of poor customer service, so I won't be ordering from them -- online or in-person -- again. read more

The order is wrong when you order delivery - if it shows up at all. No joke, I've placed and order from them 6 times, the first and third times it came; but never showed up any of the other times. Chicken Rico is quite tasty. I am a stingy chink who commuted my junior and senior year at UMD. I wanted to conserve money so I commuted every single day from Gaithersburg to College Park. About twice a week after school, on the way back, I would come here. Man, the food here is awesome. I was never one of those people who ate at College Park restaurants because those places just cater to drunk college students. My pallet is attuned to day laborers. I like to eat what the grit and grind people like to eat so I will always frequent Riverdale and Langley Park for my eateries during my college years. It's your standard Peruvian Chicken place where you order how much meat you want and order your sides. I always get half a chicken with fried yuca and fried rice with beans. This place rules. I usually have qualms about eating at a restaurant by myself because I worry about what the workers and other customers might talk about me. But everyone who works here or come here speak Spanish and my Spanish was not good enough back then to understand what they are saying so those worries did not exist back then. If I was to come back here, I would be sure to bring someone else. read more

The Pollo a la brasa has decent flavor, but not the best in the DMV. The lomo saltado is also in the average space. My low score has to do with the inconsistency of this particular location. Some dishes take 15 mins to prepare and they will not allow you to call ahead and place an order for pick up. Rather they make you come in and wait the 15 mins at their location. I have also been told they won't sell me white meat only because they don't have enough chickens at 11am? They just opened! I have had the experience of being told certain menu items are not available on several occasions such as lomo saltado. Today I find myself waiting 20 mins for the next batch of chickens to be cooked and its 1:30pm which is around the lunch hour?? These items feel like management issues which hopefully get corrected. I stopped by here on a Tuesday at 8pm and it was pretty empty. I have frequented the other Peruvian chicken joint in College Park(Baltimore Ave and Sunnyside) and enjoy it thoroughly. I thought I would try something new and it was on my way back to DC. We were the only ones in line. The first guy was attentive and ordered the half chicken, with a side of rice and beans and slaw. My friend ordered the quarter chicken with fried yuca. The cashier was somewhat attentive, because he was listening to his headphones and didn't seem like he was paying much attention. It was kind of disrespectful. So, onto the meal. The chicken is great and the skin was browned and crispy. The crispiness is something I haven't found at the other place in College Park. Chicken was very juicy, moist and tender. Although the meat was seasoned well, the skin was just way too salty for my taste. I think I should have eaten some skin with the meat. The sides were also a mix bag. The slaw had way too much mayonnaise(if that is what they use). It was way too heavy and difficult to eat a couple of mouthfuls before being overwhelmed in the dressing that the slaw is floating in. The rice was a bit mushy and there was a large golf ball size clump of rice on the plate. The rice was just incredibly salty. The yuca on the other hand was significantly better than other places that I have tried. Their yuca is still moist and tender and not overcooked. The two condiments were on par too, but the green chili sauce was also just overloaded with salt. I was pretty much dehydrated after this meal because everything was really salty. I liked the crispness of the skin and it is great value. I split the half chicken plate with my friend and it was more than plenty to eat. Overall, I wasn't too impressed. Salt was the predominant taste of their food. I'm not sure if this on par, but I'd rather go to that other place in College Park. I would come back to try some other items and try other sides, but if your headed in that direction, it is worth stopping by, but be sure to have plenty of water. read more

I dropped in to order the chicken salad that the Greenbelt location makes. I was dissapointed because their chicken salad differs greatly from the Greenbelt location. I was expecting their chicken mixed with their special sauce but it was just chicken chunks on top of a large bed of greens with parmasean cheese, croutons and dressing. Different than what I was expecting but still delicious. The chicken was marinated and tastes fresh. I was waiting for my order and watching other people order chicken and sides and was amazed at the portion sizes at this location. Aside from the 1/4 chicken, you get to pick 2 sides and when they are filling the take-out box or plate they fill it to the top like a mountain. Very generous portion sizes! Updating from my old review that said this place wasn't as good as Pollo Rico. Gotta change that...it's better. The chicken is consistently juicier and loaded with more flavor, along with a nice subtle sense of smoke from time spent in the charcoal-fired rotisserie. They also have THE BEST green sauce. I usually order order an extra half-dozen orders of the stuff and use it on everything from egg-white omelettes to tacos. Sometimes they also have outstanding yucca, other times it's been sitting under the heat lamp for a while and is tough. I usually just get a double order of beans, which are good but not nearly as good as Pollo Rico's. Chicken Rico may have stolen EPR's pollo crown, but EPR still has some of the best beans I've ever eaten. Otherwise...the place is a pain to get to, especially with Purple Line contruction and it's completely no frills place that really works best as a take-out joint, though there are tables to eat-in if you just want to tear into the area's best Peruvian chicken immediately.. read more

This place is awesome. The chicken is always great and the sauces are amazing. The green sauce here is the best I've ever tasted. This place is better than Sardis in my opinion and for the price you can't find better. The only negatives are the cleanliness and the freshness of the sides. I found a hair in my carne asada once. I usually go to their other location in DC (District Rico) but since I was in the neighborhood yesterday, I stopped by their Hyattsville location and while the chicken and plantains were good as usual, I was disappointed to find they don't serve black beans or offer cilantro lime dressing for their salad and there was no gravy for the mashed potatoes like in DC...I also showed my law enforcement ID and didn't receive a discount like I do in DC...I also love the cilantro lime rice they serve in DC every Thursday which I didn't see in Hyattsville...they are scheduled to open a new location in Rockville soon so it would be nice if all their locations served the same dishes so regular customers like myself can feel confident we will receive our favorites no matter which location we patronize!! read more

I've ordered family meals from here via UberEATS three times after finding out District Rico no longer delivered to my address. All three times, Chicken Rico has gotten substantial portions of my order incorrect and not given me multiple sides that I ordered. The third time, I called instead of ordering online. The guy on the phone sounded like he was really zoned out - very flighty and unfocused. He had a thick accent but seemed to understand English. After about 15 minutes on the phone, our order still arrived missing two sides. Ordered a whole chicken with fried plantain late at night on grubhub before they closed. The delivery was swift and the chicken was delicious and moist, NOT one of them dried up "let's get rid of this chicken and close up kind!" The plantain needed to be tossed in paper towels to remove the excess oil but they were not ruined and still yummy. I grab take out from Chicken Rico at least 2x a month. It's a great value for a ton of amazing Peruvian food. The chicken is always perfectly seasoned and juicy and there are tons of side options. You must try the fried rice. It's made with chopped up Peruvian Chicken. So freaking good. Also their yucca is always perfect, where other places I've tried it gets tough and chewy. Idk what they do here, but damn it's good. The male staff is definitely inappropriate when it comes to being flirtatious, but you get a good laugh out of it.
