Chicken Shawarma Bowl with salad base and tzatziki.
Tiffany W.

My family and I come here every time we visit Michigan City. It's our favorite place to eat at in town. They always have great service, it's small but has plenty of seating inside and out. There is also a full bar, the food is always fresh and delicious and the portions are huge for the price. My favorite is the chicken shawarma bowl. It comes with red cabbage, Kalamata olives, pickles, tomatoes, red onion, cucumbers, chickpeas, radishes and feta. The falafel and hummus are also delicious. I didn't think to take a picture until we already started eating but I took some to give an idea of the portions.

Thanks to Yelp we found this great lunch spot. Nestled into the downtown area of Michigan City. Very welcoming, super clean, with a full bar and several beers on tap. He served us ice water without even having to ask, which on a hot day was divine. The Gyro had a generous portion of gyro meat, plenty of fresh veges and tziki plus these perfectly cooked fries. SO good! My husband had the Shawarma chicken bowl and really enjoyed it. If we lived closer we'd probably come here regularly.

Chicken Shawarma Wrap

Perhaps one of the best Mediterranean foods I've had anywhere. The french fries were especially crispy.

A friend and I were spending the weekend in MC for a little girls weekend get away and decided to get lunch at Chickpea before hitting the road. We were expecting a fast casual palce based on some reviews and the photos online but it ended up being a sit down place. Our server was nice and attentive as we were the only ones there (we got there around 11). I ordered the Chicken Shwarma Wrap expecting it to be a good size and was shocked to see how large the portion was. I personally couldn't finish it but it was an early lunch for me. The chicken was a little dry but the flavors made up for it and the pickles packed a nice punch. The fries had a little sumac on them and were well cooked. Overall, the food was pretty good and a good value. If you are looking for medeterranian in the area it's worth swinging by.

The veggies were crisp and the dressing was flavorful. Could use a bit more variety in the ingredients, but still very good.

Food was ok, service was below average. I got a falafel bowl, nowhere on the menu says it comes feta cheese so be careful if you're vegan. I didn't want to waste food, so instead of returning the bowl I picked all the cheese. Good size of hummus, garlic sauce could be more garlicky and the falafel was good but needs more salt. The bowl to my surprise was cold, at least the rice should be warm... good amount of veggies. My husband had a chicken shawarma sandwich, it comes with fries which based on the taste and look they were made from scratch, not from frozen bag of fries. Food came out very quickly. The service was below average. Few teenage girls that acted like they don't want to do this job. Barely any word or enthusiasm during the process. It felt very weird. At one point I belive the owner came to ask if everything was OK so that was nice. Menu is a piece of paper straight from the printer with manually written corrections so that was weird too... It's a nice place with outdoor sitting area and nice bar,I just hope the service will improve.

Excellent halal middle eastern food. (Soon to have Jamaican food). Friendly service. Pépé is very hospitable. Great quality, generous portions, flavorful at a reasonable price. The orange blossom lemonade stole my heart. Perfectly slightly sweetened, tangy and aromatic. I would say it is a fusion between authentic middle eastern classics and veggie/rice bowls. Plenty of vegetarian options (grape leaves, hummus, falafel...)

The fries are to die for. 10 out of 10. Baba ganosh app was good. Falafel bowl was tasty. Nice portions. Outdoor seating was perfect for nice weather. Would highly recommend for vegans or meat eaters alike. But seriously. Best $4 side of fries perhaps I've ever had.

The food was absolutely delicious and I particularly loved the Shami and Koubidehs. The koubidehs were so tender and juicy. The service was phenomenal and they even brought us some tea and dessert (bamieh) for free. Kabobi is open late and was the perfect spot to chat while the rain died down. Definitely coming back when I'm in Chicago next time!

Even when it's busy--which is most of the time--they do a great job of getting everyone seated without a long wait. We almost always order the family meal. It starts with their fresh Persian salad and creamy hummus, which are the perfect way to begin the meal. The kabobs are always flavorful, tender, and cooked perfectly, and the rice is just as delicious. My only suggestion would be to include a few more grilled vegetables on the family platter, as they pair so well with the rest of the meal. The service is consistently friendly and attentive, which is one of the many reasons we keep coming back. If you're looking for delicious Persian food that's perfect for sharing, Kabobi Grill is a great choice.

I called them because I wasn't sure if the online version would be too slow. We were a group of three that came in Saturday night at 7 pm. It was moderately busy. The staff were all welcoming with smiles on their faces and attentiveness. Prices were fair for the amount of food you receive. Food portions are colossal so I would recommend one appetizer and one entree if you are a couple. They give you a complimentary dish. We ordered arayes with meat, meat toshka, mixed grill with baba ghanouj, fillet of basa fried, and mint lemonade. They also offer you fresh Arabic coffee before you leave. This is about a 4.5-5. -arayes with meat 4 - this was not bad. It's like a tamer version of the meat toshka. -meat toshka 5 - I prefer this over the arayes because they add the Syrian cheese. This one was bursting with flavor the moment you took a bite out of it. The minced beef and lamb just melt in the mouth. -mixed grill 5 - this came with 3 big skewers (shish kabab, kufta kabab, and chicken tawook. It also has tomatoes and onions to help cut down the meat when digesting. There are two heaping portions of biryani and saffron rice and baba ghanouj. The baba ghanouj was creamy and flavorful. It goes well with the pita bread. The meats were cooked medium well unless you want something. I think next time I'll ask for the shish kababs to be cooked medium rare or medium for a more juicy taste. The chicken tawook and kufta were both succulent. -fillet of basa fried 5 - the two pieces of basa fillet were astronomical. It also comes with two different kinds of rice. The fish was flaky, moist, and seasoned. Make sure you add the lemon and eat it with the sauce. -mint lemonade 5 - this was very refreshing after eating a heavy meal.

To be clear, the parking area is kind of tight and cramped. If you can't find parking here, you can try seeing if parking is available in the neighborhood or next door. Inside Al Manakeesh, they have a plentiful amount of tables. You order at the front, receive a pager, and wait for your food. They have additional drinks in the back. They are known for making Middle Eastern flatbread pizzas and kaaks (bagel). Customer service was great. They were very efficient at making the food and drinks. Everyone was nice. No one was pushy when we ordered our items. Prices were good, they were inexpensive. We ordered egg/meat/cheese, pepperoni, mixed meat bagel, sfeha with tahaina, and zaatar/akkawi cheese/cherry tomato. Honestly, everything was a 5/5. I liked that the pizzas weren't floppy and none of the ingredients slid off. The portions were huge. I also got a peach matcha. After mixing it, the peach taste was very noticeable: -The pepperoni tastes cleaner and more flavorful than the American places. For some reason, the American ones are so greasy and oily. -For the egg/meat/cheese pizza, the egg taste really stands out. -Sfeha is halal ground beef and has more flavor than regular ground beef. The tahaina helps make it pop. -The zaatar/akkawi/cherry tomato is an awesome combination. When you take that first bite, you'll immediately taste all of the ingredients. It's that prominent. -The mixed meat kaak has halal turkey, halal roast beef, halal salami, mozzarella, Mexican cheese, and their signature sauce. They give you two cups of sauces. One I think is the signature sauce and the red one is a little spicy. The portion is big enough to share between 3-4 people.
