I came the other day as I was passing through from Illinois back home. I had scoped this place out in advance and thought it would be a perfect stopping point for lunch. I got the falafel bowl and it was very tasty and plentiful. There were tons of veggies to add to the bowl, which I love! I am deducting a star because I wish it was cleaner there. The food prep area appeared clean, which is a deal breaker. But the building and outdoor eating area not so much. They need to do a better job at cleaning the entire property. We loved this place! The food and atmosphere was perfect. The service was friendly. I had the chicken shawarma which was flavorful with a nice grilled taste. The pita bread is large and is like a wrap instead of a pocket. It came with an olive oil lemon sauce but I also added the traditional tzatziki sauce to it. We also tried the falafel pita which was huge and delicious. My husband enjoyed his gyro. The fries are perfection with a little seasoning that is just enough pizazz that's not too overpowering. The fries come with a white sauce for dipping that I really enjoyed but the rest of the family preferred not to use it. Lastly, we tried the orange blossom lemonade which was fresh tasting with a floral bite. We liked it. I recommend this place as everything is made fresh to order. read more

My wife and family have tried to stay close to home, with COVID precautions in place, but we did travel to Michigan City for a day. One our last day there, we really didn't want a burger, but Mediterranean sounded good. This is a small place, and only a couple of employees were working, so my expectations were pretty low. But I have to tell you, the food was excellent! The hummus was tasty and I enjoyed the Chicken Shawarma. My daughter had a falafel that she enjoyed, and my son's Greek salad was on point. The hero of the day was the Gyro meat. My wife said it was the best Gyro she has ever had. We ended the day with some baklava, that also hit the spot. I only have a couple of suggestions. The pita bread for the hummus was dry and a bit strange. It was too bad, b/c the hummus was tasty. I also would prefer to have the baklava heated. Most Greek restaurants don't serve it that way... but brother they should! Great little place, I would recommend! read more

OMG this place is incredible. We stumbled in accidentally after being at the mall, and I am so glad we did. My husband had the gyros, and lemme tell ya, these aren't the kind of gyros you're used to. They are deliciously decadent ! The homemade pita is soooo good. I got the chicken shwarama in a bowl with a side of hummus, and it is very very good. This place is absolutely a gem. I will absolutely come back. The proprietor was so nice; he gave us a sample of the orange blossom lemonade, which was a taste unlike any I've had before...the tartness of the lemon and the sweetness of the orange blossom mixed into a sort of paradise on my tongue. Traveling through Indiana heading to Michigan from Illinois, we stopped at the Lighthouse Premium Outlet Mall for some serious shopping. After we built up quite an appetite, we decided to stop at a cute shop called Chickpea, an outstanding chipotle style spread that allows you to pick a wrap with chicken shawarma, gyro, or falafel, or a bowl or salad. Quite a few selections within each group. With Our group of four, two got gyro wraps and two got gyro bowl with yellow rice. The gyro sandwich had a couple extra ingredients beyond your typical wrap adding kalamata olives and crumbled feta. Not as greasy like some other gyro meat. The girls said the rice bowls were tasty as well. We added a side of Babaganoush which was yummy and we were very full and satisfied. The staff were very friendly and we will definitely be back when we're in the area! read more

We stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant during a recent trip to Michigan City, and we can't wait to go back! If we lived closer than 5 hours away, we would be here every week! The staff are so friendly, which is always an added bonus. The place is clean and the ingredients are fresh. We got the chicken bowl with rice, tahini, hummus, and tzaziki (all of the sauces and dressings were top-notch), and one of the highlights for us were the falafals - put together and fried on the spot after we ordered them. Definitely one of the best falafals we have found anywhere! Wow. They also gave us some of their baklava, which was delightful. They also have comfortable outdoor seating on their enclosed patio. Hidden gem in the Michigan City area! The staff was quick to make recommendations for my husband and I which was super helpful. I got the shawarma bowl with rice which was so delicious and had quite a variety of veggies along with the flavorful toum garlic sauce (so good). My husband got the shawarma sandwich which he ate quickly. They have many other meat and vegetarian entrees which you can customize. Finally got to try Chickpea earlier this week. A lady that works at local mall recommended it to us a couple months ago, and it was definitely a good recommendation. I ordered a falafel pita and boyfriend ordered a lamb gyro. Ingredients inside our sandwiches were very fresh and plentiful and our pita wraps were grilled upon order which made for a nice warm contrast to the cool crisp veggies and tzatziki sauce inside. Prices were fair. Might be SLIGHTLY more than some other Mediterranean places that I've recently visited but not by much. Food is worth price. Restaurant itself was bright, colorful, clean, small, and quaint. Its set up so that you just walk up, place your order, and then have it brought out to table. Food is behind windowed counter so you see the ingredients and can watch them assemble your meal. Also noticed that they have some beer on tap if you're in the mood. The man and woman working were helpful and willing to answer questions and explain the options and ordering process. Guy was not the most personable in the world but was helpful none the less. My one concern is that they were not very busy. Went on a Sunday around lunchtime, and it was empty; someone did come in toward end of our meal. Hopefully they have busier times so that they can afford to stick around. Boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meals and agreed that Chickpea is somewhere we would want to return. Stopped in by chance on the way to Indiana Dunes. So glad we did. Mo, the owner, is friendly and has great taste, and gave us beer samples. We had the lamb gyro with tzatziki sauce, olives, tomatoes and onions. The gyro meat is perfectly done, with just the right amount of oil, spice and saltiness. The french fries are very good, but are special when eaten with his white yogurt sauce. Very good value for the money. read more

We traverse through Michigan City a number of times a year and on our most recent pass through we decide to go a bit off the beaten path and try this place for dinner. Glad we did. Great Middle Eastern food made with family recopies. We enjoyed our conversation with one of the owners. Both hubby and I opted for the pita sandwich which is really like a middle eastern overstuffed burrito. The stuffing is rolled into the pita and wrapped in foil to keep it together. I had the chicken and hubby the falafel. We also ordered a large hummus, some to eat with our sandwiches and some to take home. To drink I had the orange blossom lemonade. The homemade hummus was to die for! So glad we got a big one. It was really good on the sandwich too. The chicken was cooked perfectly and not over done. Yea, for juicy chicken. I can't remember all the yummy stuff they put in but it was chock a block full. The orange blossom lemonade was interesting. Definitely nice for a change, not sure I would want it for a staple. You could, for sure, taste/smell the orange blossom. Hubby was talked into trying one of the cookies for dessert. I tasteded it and thought it only okay. A bit dry for my taste and we both thought it needed more filling. Would not have expected to find such an eclectic place in Michigan City but so glad we did. Worth the bit of drive from the highway. The Mrs. tried the Chicken Schawrma 5/5...I had the Falafel with the works and don't forget to add the fantastic Baba Ganoush to slather over your Falafel. 5/5. We arrived in Michigan City hungry and decided to try Chickpea, across from the outlet mall and we were very glad we did. Upon sitting, we were informed that not all the items on the menu were available yet as (paraphrasing) they were in process of relaunching the menu. That was OK. We ordered baba ganoush to start and the order was very good size, with pita bread. The amount was so much that it carried over to compliment our main dishes. I ordered Chicken Shawarma bowl over lettuce instead of over rice. Usually I have no problem "cleaning my plate" but this time I lost. It was a very generous portion of chicken with veggies, pickled onion, olives and probably more that I can't remember plus hummus. It was delicious! Wife ordered Greek Salad and she enjoyed it. The "sleeper" of our meal had to be the order of sumac fries. We are French fry junkies and these were the best! Don't expect catsup however, as there is none in the house. They were served with an interesting mayo type of dressing that was good. Overall, a great meal. As we finished, the folks behind us had their wraps brought to them. Huge! I was kicking myself for not ordering a falafel wrap for later. Now I must return to Michigan City. Few other observations: Our waitress was great. Friendly and patient. The cook (I think he's a genuine chef) took time to talk to us and tell us about how he prepared the food. Very nice guy. Nice build-your-own bowl. Freshly fried falafel. Fries were also freshly fried, but not as crispy as I prefer; interesting hint of sumac is almost so mild as to escape detection. Ended up dipping them in hummus. Orange blossom tea was interesting - white tea and lemonade mixed. Refreshing. The gyro looked delicious as did the chicken, although I tried neither. Seriously good. My husband, two-year-old and I stopped last week after a beach trip, and we all ate really well for $30. We got a rice bowl, a schwarma wrap, and a kid's bowl, and all were excellent and super flavorful. Our kiddo loved the hummus, and it was some of the best schwarma I've had. As others have noted, it is a little like Chipotle where you can personalize your dish with whatever toppings, and ordering is super easy. The interior is fun, bright, and clean. Best mediterranean food in the region, by far. Great find if you're peckish after some Lighthouse Outlet shopping, or for a dinner out. The chef is Lebanese and makes everything in house.
