We ordered take out for a large group of our ski team and families at Caberfae Peaks the last three years from Chicos. The first year we ordered was during COVID and Chicos was like heaven delivered to us. For three straight years, Chicos made our race weekend at Caberfae memorable as we gathered in the evening to devour everything we had ordered from them. Here's what you need to know about Chicos. It's not authentic and you're either going to be eating alone in a dead quiet empty dining room or you're not going to get a table. There's little in between. Also many things do seem to be made in a microwave and you might get charged for extras like sour cream. Now we've got that out of the way. This place does a ton of take out and people love it. I think what newbies to Chicos miss out on is that the wet burritos are king. I don't know why anyone would go there and get anything else other than not knowing. I grew up in the area and didn't care for this place much as a kid. The burritos are what kept my family coming and when I finally had one it changed everything. The portions are massive and the flavors are incredible. Now that I've left the area it's the first place I want to go when I visit home. There is something about that burrito that is incredible and the fact this place is in business with that tiny kitchen and empty dining room is a testament to how one dish can be your bread and butter (no food pun intended). Please stop. It's delicious. Last but not least this place gives back to the community in major ways. The wet burrito is fantastic. The chips were a bit stale and they had to stick our queso back in the microwave to get it hot, but other than that we enjoyed it. Our waitress was very nice and service was great. I was actually happy to not have the same Mexican food as the other 3 places in town. While they are good, all 3 taste the same. I will definitely be back for the wet burrito, which is shareable, and the sauce seemed homemade and wasn't your typical red sauce. The place is really cute with great colors! read more

Driving by this place for years I've always wanted to stop and try this place Finally did Saturday 12-14-19 Ordered two tamales, side of rice and beef nachos. I can't believe how incredibly terrible this food was. While waiting for our food we heard the microwave. Never a good sign but thought maybe they were heating the tamales. Nope they were microwaving a plate of NACHO CHIPS with gross beef and cheese on them... WHO THE HELL MICROWAVES CHIPS? They were tough and chewy and the nachos only had beef and cheese. No lettuce, tomato, olive, jalapeño or anything. It literally looked like some crap my teenage daughter made at home The rice they served was terrible too. It literally tasted like uncle bens instant rice. The tamales were the only semi edible thing and they were just mediocre but heck I was hungry I have never had worse Mexican food in my life!!! California Street Tacos are always a yes for me, and this place didn't disappoint. My niece ordered the Mexican rice with chicken. I assumed it was rice topped with chicken and cheese. I was wrong. It was more of a rice chicken mixture topped with cheddar cheese. It was still tasty, but didn't seem to be like Mexican food. We did order it without the sauce, which I believe would amp it up. Stopped in for the first time and was disappointed. Was hoping for a more authentic menu but it's your standard tex-mex. Most items are a la carte except the do have 3 or 4 combos to choose from. The shredded chicken was a thin paste (we thought we were given bean enchiladas by mistake). Service left something to be desired, and the place itself seemed a little run down. However their house-made enchilada sauce was tasty, and they shred their own cheddar cheese. I would give this place another try, now that I know what to expect, and order something else. read more

We were starving after being on the road all day. Husband ordered a wet burrito, which is a little pricey, but it's ENORMOUS! He ate a lot and only finished half. My son and I shared the Large Tostada plate, it came with a beef tostada, crunchy beef taco and a cheese enchilada. When they say beef, it is ground beef. Their tortilla chips are very good. Their salsa is just okay. I asked for something hotter, and he gave me a little dish of green deliciousness from the back. I would go back just for that hot sauce! Chico's is so good! All the food is freshly prepared, never frozen and the recipes have passed down to the next generation. The cheese freshly grated and the portions are ample. My wife got a Wet Burrito and I got crunchy tacos. The Sweet Red Salsa is worth the trip alone. It's not too hot and there's just enough sweetness to be addicting. It's unique and delicious. If I could give zero stars I would. Stopped by while passing through after skiing in the area. We assumed the place was going to be good as there was multiple cars in the lot. First off my friend ordered 9 California street steak tacos, and the young lady taking orders thought he said 9 burritos and tried to collect $70 for them. After my friend and I corrected her and ordered our food, we waited 25 minutes for a dozen tacos and a tostada. When we got home, we were appalled to find how absolute garbage our food was. My husband's tostada was practically a bag salad with bits of ground beef sitting on top of a broken hard taco shell. The rest of our "California street tacos" were just soft tortillas with bits of I guess you could call steak (See pic). Their salsa tastes like watered down Tostitos salsa. All of this for $40+. I would stay clear of this place and get yourself some Taco Bell for $5. read more

I was disappointed. I was thinking of giving it 3 stars, since technically there was nothing "wrong" with the food, and the chips were pretty good. But "Meh, I've experienced better" is exactly what I thought eating here. This food is essentially "cafeteria mexican". The sauces are all canned, the meat is basically made with packages of "taco seasoning." The "fish tacos" were fish sticks, tartar sauce, and lettuce on a tortilla. I'm sorry. I don't really know what I was expecting. It's Cadillac, not little Mexico in Detroit (where there actually IS good Mexican food). But if you like "El Paso" tacos like you can buy in the supermarket, this is probably the place for you. The food is not bad, it's just not really Mexican. I called in a to go order. Picked up my food and brought it all the way home. (Maybe half a mile).. to find that I paid 30.00 for nothing I ordered. I called to let them know they gave me two small Jr wet burritos and the lady argued with me that she gave me a large and a jr. They were the same size, in different size boxes. I didn't order two different size boxes. But that is sure what I paid for. Worst part. Food was cold as if it had been sitting on the counter packaged. Even though I had waited over 25 minutes when they said it would be 15. This women knew she was flat out lying to me just as well as I do. We have been coming there for years. And the last year or so it has completely taken a dump. When I'm telling her about this, she argues with me. I can find appreciation for making mistakes. But not for her blindly arguing with me, essentially calling me a liar. I know what I ordered and I know what I was looking at. We have had similar issues before. I have been there twice and it was absolutely horrible both times. I found multiple bones in my food and my buddies chimichanga was cold. I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and a friend brought me here to give this a try after a hike in Manistee. It's pretty small, but very clean. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful. She was always on top of bringing us more chips and salsa. (Unfortunately the salsa just tasted like tomato sauce.) She too was a vegetarian so she gave me some recommendations and ingredient info that may have been of concern to me. I went with some soft tacos and a side of beans and pico de gallo. The tacos were okay, but not like the super traditional kind I was hoping for. The cheese was just grated cheddar, and I was hoping, again, for authentic queso fresco. My pico was yummy, and my beans and rice were piping hot and fairly good. My boyfriend was very happy to get his beef chimichanga with shaved beef instead of ground. My friend got a large burrito, which is massive! I wished more things came with pico, rice, and beans as opposed to à la carte however. The prices were fair as well. read more
